  • Swanndri is well known for crafting high-quality oilskin jackets, vests, and coats, all made from premium European oilskin, also known as waxed cotton canvas. Oilskin, while not strictly waterproof, is highly weather-resistant and will keep you dry for an extended period of time. Particular attention is paid to the construction of our garments to ensure that any weak points - where water ingress may occur - are minimised e.g. seams and stitch holes.
    Over time, your oilskin garment will lose its waxy coating and its water repellency will diminish. It is possible, however, to reapply the waxy coating to extend the life of your garment for years to come.
    In this video, our GM of Sales, Nic Floyd, illustrates how easy it is to reproof your jacket and explains what you need to get the job done.
    You can find out more about our oilskin range and the history of oilskin garments over at www.swanndri.c...

    Thanks for explaining the process, I feel confident in redoing my own now after the same length of neglect, even though it still has a nice deep look.

    Thank you for your video and taking the time to respond to messages! I am hoping you can answer my question, how do you "iron" out or decrease the oilskin please? Mine arrived in the mail very creased indeed. Thanks in advance.

    • @swanndriclothing
      @swanndriclothing  Місяць тому +1

      Hi there, we don't recommend ironing or steaming. You could either lie it flat in a warm room or hang it on a coat hanger for a while. The creases should naturally disappear with wear. Thanks

    In Australia I was told just to leave it on the clothes line in summer to set the wax. Probably hotter than your hairdryer. He said it works great?

    • @swanndriclothing

      Hi there, Sorry for our late reply! We wouldn't recommend doing it this way as the oilskin will likely get sun damaged and the jacket will change colour if exposed to the sun for a long enough period. Thanks.

    Is dubbing OK to use on oilskin?

    • @swanndriclothing
      @swanndriclothing  2 роки тому +2

      Hi Stu, if you are talking about Dubbin we would not recommend to use it on our Oilskin products. Typically, Dubbin would be used more on leather products and can be thicker, so it is more challenging to work into the fabric and sits on the surface more than our reproofing oil. You can check out our wax here: www.swanndri.co.nz/swanndri-wax-reproofing-tin.html

    Yes but how do you wash the inside fabric..??? This is so frustrating none explains how to do that everyone talks about how to rewax… yes but firts I have to wash the inside, tell me how??

    • @swanndriclothing
      @swanndriclothing  6 місяців тому

      Hi there, sorry for the late reply! We only recommend a spot clean with a damp cloth to wash the lining. Leave it lying flat in the shade to dry. Oilskin will not survive if it goes through the washing machine. So to keep the jacket fresh and the lining clean just a spot clean and airing the jacket. Thanks

    How do you store the coat. Can you hang it in the plastic laundry bag or other garment bag? Do you fold it and box it up? Is is safe to hang beside other garments

    • @swanndriclothing
      @swanndriclothing  6 місяців тому +1

      Hi there, sorry for the late reply! We would recommend keeping it stored in a cool dry place. Whether you hang it or fold it is up to you. Keeping in mind, if it is touching other garments, its likely they will get waxy/oily marks from your Oilskin jackets. Please ensure you always store it dry, if its still wet it's likely it will be moldy the next time you pull it out to wear.

    What wax do you use? Can you use brown shoe polish?

    • @swanndriclothing
      @swanndriclothing  Рік тому

      Hi there, we use our own Oilskin Wax (found here: www.swanndri.co.nz/swanndri-wax-reproofing-tin.html) which is specific for oilskin jackets and vests. Thanks

    Wait a minute....did you say it's not waterproof but you won't get wet for a long time????🤔

    • @swanndriclothing
      @swanndriclothing  Рік тому +2

      Hi there, our oilskin is not a waterproof-rated product. It hasn't gone through standardized testing for them to be a waterproof-rated garment. However, it will keep you dry for a long time before the water seeps through and gets you wet. Remember that we don't claim our oilskin jackets and vests to be waterproof. But it will keep you dry up to a certain point.
