Farmall H Carburetor Servicing

  • Just a quick dismantling, cleaning and reassembly of the nasty old carb on the H. An ultra-sonic parts washer is used to do the cleaning job. However, there IS a bit of a description given of what you can do to build you own SUB-sonic parts washer. The one I have has been used for literally dozens of carburetor service jobs....not only tractors, but motorcycles, lawnmowers and 4 wheelers as well. Very simple and inexpensive to build, the sub-sonics work quite well though not nearly as well as the high frequency ultra-sonic washers.
    The project for today was not a carb 'rebuild' because #1): it was running pretty good to start with and #2: I didn't order a rebuild kit for it thinking a good cleaning would suffice. Now that its reassembled, all that's left is the 'cold start' of the old machine to see if it runs any better or not.
    Long story short, it was just a horribly cold and windy day and it just seemed like a quick shop job would be the best thing to do. Besides, the carb has never been touched since I've had the tractor....and that's GOTTA be close to 9 or 10 years now. And most of that time was sitting in the woods on death row....

    Reminds me of my grandfather's shop when I was a kid. Funny I was just working on my Great Grandfather's Farmall Cub (newer yellow version) in the 10 degree weather a few days ago. Tuning a new carb is getting the best of me.

      Now that's really cool. First your G GrandFathers Cub and second the weather... I worked outside my entire career and am glad to not have to do it any longer !! If its a Chinese carb, you may be in for a treat. Sometimes they are fine, but according to a lot of Ford guys, they can be troublesome to get adjusted out. I bought one for a Husky leaf blower for $14 and its been absolutely perfect. Good luck with the project Ted Bob.

      Hey Dave, another viewer told me of using a palm sander for the vibration unit on a sub sonic washer. THAT's a good idea for sure !! I can't believe I never thought of that. LOL

    Really a nice video my friend, my float ball leaked when I get my Farmall and did I had trouble to solder it, what I learned is when I solder the hole, the air inside the bowl expands of the heat and blow though the melted solder before it can stall and let me with hole again, Man that was trail and error to get the heat just right

    • @tractorman4461
      @tractorman4461  2 роки тому +2

      I know exactly what your issue was Jan. What happened, the hole allowed a tiny amount of gasoline to enter the float. The simplest way to vent all the gas is to blow compressed air ACROSS the hole, which causes a vacuum inside the float. Too much air pressure will actually cause the float to collapse, so be careful if you have to do it again. But with the float sanded and ready to solder, have the heated iron, flux and solder ready. As soon as the venting of the gas is complete, immediately flux, heat and solder the hole quickly. Gently file the excess solder off (with a tiny file) so as not to effect the weight of the float to a great extent. Too much heat and solder will enter the float and effect its action as well. It's gotta be quick but it is very easy to do, depending on the location of the hole. Sometimes there is just no repair to it too.

      @@OldSneelock I haven't thought of trying it that way, but they are so delicate and the brass is soooo thin it goes super quick. I just prop it in a rag or towel to mold quickly to the shape of the float, then hit it with the process. It's over in seconds....usually. But there's ALWAYS that one ya know....

    That old H is getting it's much needed attention. I miss the H I bought from you...I sort of regret my friend talking me out of it. I go by his house a lot and I see it almost every time, he must be using it a lot because it's always in a different spot when I drive by. Ironically he still hasn't put on the gas tank back on it. I cleaned it and hadn't got to the point of putting it back on myself. He's still running it with the small temporarily tank I put on it over a year ago.

    Several years ago I priced a subsonic cleaner, (I about needed one for my shorts $$$)! I took an old palm sander and an antifreeze jug with the side cut out, (machanic's bed pan), laid in the parts with parts cleaner, and set it on the sander. Works great but no heat. I've also found plastic coffee containers work well.

    • @tractorman4461

      Yes, a palm sander would work perfectly for the source of vibration. I''m thinking that's a 3450 rpm which should send it really a jigging. My little 9watt motor at 1550 rpm takes a lot longer to shake it loose. But it worked well for me for many many projects. EXCELLENT idea Doc !!

      The down draft on the flathead in the 8N had a drilled hole for the float bowl vent

    UA-cam's James Condon, the generator and small engine guru recommends gunsmith screwdrivers for carburetor jets. They have straight shanks to fit deeply recessed jets and a "concave shape, which allows the entire tip to fill the whole slot of a screw, also known as hollow ground".

    • @tractorman4461

    Watching this 44 shop adventure was very informative indeed my 44 JO Friend! I was at the docs today and next Thursday he’s going to do an angioplasty on me legs and place stints in some veins or determine if he will need to do a by pass. Should be a blast! But your video gave me an idea! If I figure out how to get it in there, I could use that carb. cleaner but before eat a big plate of pinto beans, which would provide the vibration and clean out me system. So what do ya think of my scientific idea? If it works, think if the money people could save. Plus one may be able to use this method on other parts! Kidney stones? No worry! Bladder problems? A little dabble do ya! So what do ya think now, eh? So since I fell asleep mid way watching this adventure and rewatched the entire thing, I’m going to sleep on it and dream of the 44 vibration clinic where the Missus can make a mess of soup beans and corn bread as a prep for this process. Yep, I got lots of ideas! As I’ve always said, I have a huge brain with a 3” skull! This proves it I’d say! This is DaveyJO Anna I’m outta here heading for dreamland and more amazing ideas!
