For all the practical purposes how is it more advantageous than gain staging to VU Meters? I don't think K metering system is about gain staging,. It helps set dynamics level of the whole composition. And the levels of the K metering are suggested for different genres.
VU meters behave like logarithmic hearing. K metering just helps build in head room and gain stage along the way. Whatever you please is best, however for producers like myself that use lots of different samples K Metering can help adjust them all to one balanced level before mixing. If you're recording live instruments you're likely already doing this on the way in. I would not substitute K metering over VU meters I would use both if you prefer.
