Those racing bugs remind me of the tradition we have where I live. Racing old cars on harvested wheat fields, often involving some car to car contact. Some VW Bettles always take part and usually finish pretty well, they only get beaten by AWD cars like old Audi Quattros. The races are called "Stoppelfeldrennen".
We love it! The Class 11 Class is looking like so much fun that we are starting a build of our own to race next year! Thanks @Hagerty for the great video, love seeing love for the Aircooled VWs and it doesn't hurt to bring in Walker for the whole thing :)
I had a 1972 Beetle in high school (in the late 80s) and it pretty much ticked the Porsche 911 box for me. I know what it's like to have the rear end come around if you lift off mid-corner, and it was the most fun ever had in snow. Couldn't get the thing stuck, even in mud up to the tailpipes. Sure, I'd love a vintage 911, but I'd also like to retire.
When dinosaur roamed the pits and I was "racing" these were Class 7w if memory serves. Their greatest distinction was a phenomenal success rate for finishing races. Finishing is a lot more fun than quickly running to a DNF...
Having worked in a vw machine shop 40+ years ago and owning a couple over the years, all I can say is they are fun and will take a massive amount of abuse. Just plan on working on them.
Dad and I built a class 5 years ago, as we finished it and got it ready to enter a race, score changed the class 5 rules. Unfortunately with 18" of travel up front, 20" out back, and a chevy eco tech our car got bumped out of class 5 into unlimited, we can't compete with that class, but its a super fun car non the less.
Having owned my 911 for 28 years, and having owned a couple old Beetles (the one I bought from my brother we called Paul), I can honestly say, a Porsche is just a squished Beetle. Love em all. Be well, and have fun 😊
I thought all long haired guys had at least 3 bugs at some point. It's strange off-road bugs we're not more popular back when they were cheap. They are so much fun!
My first car was a beetle (30 years ago) and as we have no deserts here in germany, I sometimes drove it through gravelpits and on forest tracks...felt like driving Paris-Dakkar 🙂
Crowbar a Golf 1800 motor in with an adapter plate for the original gearbox, some minor suspension mods because honestly the Beetles have great front suspension, dirt tires and disc brakes up front, and you’re ready to play
EMPI, back in the day, was the king of the hill. Then, they sold out and shipped all production overseas, and build quality went straight into the shitter. They lost a lot of consumer confidence. Nowadays, even though most production is still overseas (those cylinder heads are almost for certain Chinese castings) they have come back around a bit. EMPI ain't what it used to be. Some of it is OK, but caveat emptor.
I've notice just in the last year the selling prices are $1000-$4000 from where they were 2 years prior for a basic bug. Even more for anything built. I'm waiting for the barn find jackpot. :P
Hello i live in Belgium my dream is to drive american cars from the 20s to the 50s which annoys me in Europe we talk too much about ecology Europeans have fragile characters when we talk about fat v8 engine, electric cars are starting to invaded europe!! i can't stand, in 2035 the belgian government wants to do away with heat engines in the country's big cities
Thinking about getting one of those VW Diesel cars & just roll coal with it. Just moved to a state that doesn’t do smog testing & I’ll be sure to pollute for three people from now on.
Build one for a few thousand dollars???? In what world is that, most people can't build the roll cage if you can manage to get a roll cage in for a few thousand dollars the rest of the things needed just to finish cost money. And to go fast would still cost a bunch.
The bajas in all these vids have worse suspension travel than the one I had. What’s going on there? Dude claimed big travel numbers, but that must be landing jumps only. I guess they avoid bottoming out with stiff damping and porpoise around on the small stuff. Seems like softer shocks and a robust set of snubbers would be better for speed/control and avoiding fatigue?

I'm currently talking my big bro into building 1 with me for next year..looks extremely fun

These are cute little off-road racing machines. I love them to look like that and perform like that
When dinosaur roamed the pits and I was "racing" these were Class 7w if memory serves. Their greatest distinction was a phenomenal success rate for finishing races. Finishing is a lot more fun than quickly running to a DNF...
Magnus drives it like it’s second nature. 😎👍🇨🇦
The Bug is the penultimate baja machine!!! Loved them back in the 70's
There are Baja Bugs and there are class 11 bugs there is a huge difference. Get it straight Pomey!
As soon as I saw EMPI tour I clicked that play button!
THANK YOU !!!
Having worked in a vw machine shop 40+ years ago and owning a couple over the years, all I can say is they are fun and will take a massive amount of abuse. Just plan on working on them.
The most classic looking offroad bug ive ever seen, quit nice
Lots of fun !!!
So are we to expect a Magnus Walker Baja Bug build soon?!? 🤞

This video got my Beetle Juices going big time! Just don't say it three times. Peace Out!!!
Magnus Walker just the best for this bug episode!
Got to Love The Bug.
Cheap? Have you looked at Beetle prices?!
Great video!! My Class 11 is street legal and insured by Hagerty. LOVE Hagerty.
Thank you for your support, Smokey!
Awesome 🤩, yah gotta love 💕 the Bugs man, i know i do.. those bugs are the bomb 💣🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥😜
can't wait to see what Magnus will do to a bug, love this episode. 🤙
Having owned my 911 for 28 years, and having owned a couple old Beetles (the one I bought from my brother we called Paul), I can honestly say, a Porsche is just a squished Beetle.
Love em all.
Be well, and have fun 😊
Perfect!!!👍

With pot holes on my local roads, seriously considering one for these! 👍
Awesome. Great video. Love my Baja Bug even more!!
Wow, big motivation for keep building my class 11 pre runner.
This is bad ass bug ! Love it
My first car was a beetle (30 years ago) and as we have no deserts here in germany, I sometimes drove it through gravelpits and on forest tracks...felt like driving Paris-Dakkar 🙂
Bugs are harder to find. 50 years ago they were everywhere we all had one. But now people want serious bucks for an old beater.
I remember the junk yards were FILLED with them in the early 90's. Now there isn't a single one in sight.
Crowbar a Golf 1800 motor in with an adapter plate for the original gearbox, some minor suspension mods because honestly the Beetles have great front suspension, dirt tires and disc brakes up front, and you’re ready to play
This looks really fun. Good stuff
THAT looks cool!!
Excellent video! 👍
Wow 🔥🔥
What a great video that brought memories in the fast track Time convinced I'm going to pick up one of these vws baha a Big brother
Empi, pretty sure it’s Engineered Motor Part Incorporated, not Euro.
im restoring and giving my 71 a baja look but still solid on the road build
I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately. Where are these competitive races going down? Anyone know
How funny. I used to play softball with Cory.
What's up MAC how you doing
my mom and dad use to rally a stock bug
Lool just show this to my crazy Maltese husband he s been taking the superbeetle up mountains, in rivers , beached in the sand! And it s stock!
hello whats the tyre size?
ya not available anymore, especially up north the all rusted to the ground. i had one 40 years ago was a blast.
I like the off Road 🤘🤘🤘🤘🔥🔥🔥
Very cool! Would love to know how much money it would take to be somewhat competitive?
more than you expect.
Not as much as you would think. A car that podiumed just sold for $6500.00usd
if you build one, $30k. If you buy one, $10k.
Crap, Magnus getting involved in the Baja Beetles is going to price-us-out of the motorsport. Damn!!
How quickly did the little guy blow the 100hp secret

Yea, some Taiwanese-made parts are decent.
spot on. but it's nice to see them trying to turn that image around.
Here before the "because of this video now I can't afford one" comment.

Pretty sure the 5/1600 is a "Baja Bug" and Class 11 are stock bugs.... kinda lol
What happened to "Know it all"? It was a great short weekly video , its still on all there ads yet nothing new?
Baja bugs got crazy expensive. Can't even find a decent running one for less than 3k.
SCORE!
Aww, crap! You see an interesting new Hagerty vid is up - and then you see that it has the confected, cowboy-hatted clown, Magnus presenting it. 😒
Its beetle ❤❤❤❤
cheap if you're rich. i gave up on mine because the damn thing costs as much as a kid to keep. non-stop trips to the mechanic
All those empi parts falling apart didn't help either.
Both are relative terms
Anyone doing this sort of thing on snow/ice? No desert where I am but lots of snow in the winter...
check out the Europeans, they've also been doing old Bugs rallying too over there
The Next Big Thing - Audi\Porsche RS2 !!!
How much does it weight?
The car in race trim is 1850lbs
@@EmpiInsider Thank You!
Cory is built like a Beatle
nice hat
I bought a Empi carb,TOTAL JUNK!
Forza horizon 4 beetle dingo racing. ❤❤❤
How did you not call this "The Next Bug Thing"?
Hi in Chile we have big sands dunes, how will it behavies for that conditions.
como las tristes
What is the name of the test drive location???
Porker?? just a bigger wobble plate that can possibly use top gear.
Why wouldn't they use a Super Beetle though? wouldn't the Super Beetle be better with a more modern front suspension?
It has McPherson strut front suspension. Not nearly as good as the old trailing arm design, with king and link pins, for hard off road abuse.
This is pretty cool stuff but I just don't like seeing or hearing this guy present it. More car, less Magnus. Great content from Hagerty as usual.
That dudes belly is rounder than a bug hood.
How about installing a Subaru boxer turbo instead?
Class 11 even is basically "stock". Only some minor mods allowed.
How freakingly awful a Bug looks with that white LED lights
Lol. I’m definitely not a fan of that funny looking light stick That’s sticking up through the back window.
I'd really love to watch
"The Next Big Thing" but I'm not a "Big" fan of the shows host.
There is nothing cheap about Baja bugs…. Pffft please got over $15k so far invested in mine…
Cheap compared to the 911 from the beginning of the vidéo I guess ..
Where's the cheap part about this?
lol. Off-road racing is definitely a rich man's sport.
Are kidney belts mandatory?
No need at all these cars work very well
Thinking about getting one of those VW Diesel cars & just roll coal with it. Just moved to a state that doesn’t do smog testing & I’ll be sure to pollute for three people from now on.
It seems using bitcoins to buy cars is what a lot of us have done i the past months. No wonder the price tanked. lol

That 100HP cheater engine is $4k not to mention the $3k to build the trans. It has another $3k in King shocks on it. NOTHING cheap about that car

So, my full race beetle engine I built myself will be seriously much faster than your beetle engines,
Why isn’t when somebody’s interviewing they have to be crazy looking extreme, long hair and facial hair is creepy
39th liker and 2nd liker 😉😎
