FAT MIKE requested this song! Bass Teacher REACTS to NOFX - “Suits and Ladders” Play Through

➡️ When the artist themselves make a song suggestion, I take it 🫡! After seeing a few short clips of Fat Mike playing “Idiots Are Taking Over”, I wanted to see his bass play through of “Suits And Ladders” to really study his technique further. @nofx4441 are a brand new band for me, and were key in starting this channel down a full-on punk rock discovery. His lines are deceptively tricky, and rely on a lot of nuance (even down to which way a string is plucked) to get the right “feel” and “bounce” his melodic bass riffs offer. I whip out my own P-Bass and a trusty .60mm pick to wrap my head around the oddly-phrased bass intro and discuss his palm muting approach, why elements of his technique are crucial to the bass line’s sound, a breakdown of the song’s chord progression, and some unsolicited advice on developing your own technique! 😉🤌🏼

Your insight to my playing makes me very happy! You rule!
You are a legend. Thank you for the last 40 years!
Thanks for everything, Mike!
I’m so late to the game FM!! You’re music is awesome. It’s all brand new to me & I love it!
Much love, dude! 🫶🏻🫶🏻
I'm so glad I just discovered this. Fat Mike requesting is so cool. Sometime the internet doesn't suck
Ok, I think the coolest bass line I've written in a long time is the one in Def Cons by the Codefendants. I'm learning how to use the bass as an important melody by letting the rest of the song breathe. Like McCartney did quite often. Don't let me down is a good example...I think playing less is kind of pretty neat.... what are your thoughts?
Its fuckin rad you come check out his videos man. See you in Montreal in August !
Agree! Awesome to see these two chat bass!! Can’t wait for the Portland shows!
I just heard Def Cons on your podcast and that's about all I want to lilisten to right now.
I thought you hated the Beatles?
@@MsAdam1459 Dude, Fatty says he hates everyone from Fletcher to Tim Armstrong. It's called jest.
Punk is so underrated, especially the rythym section. Most professionally taught players look down on them and this kind of music.....but as you found out. They have noooo idea
My brother is a band nerd and thinks anything outside of classical or orchestra is bad
@@annihilation777 show your bother the version of The Decline with the full orchestra
Punk and Ska players are some of the most underrated. Just look at drummers like Brooks Wackerman who plays for Avenged Sevenfold. Dude had to take over for The Rev
Snobs are garbage no matter which genre they support... or despise.
Rhythm section really? Idk from my perspective the rhythm (drums) specifically get great recognition due to the speed and coloring. The guitars and bass are generally seen as "boring" though. There are many examples of good players but the majority is simple basic power chords and root notes. But that I think is what makes it fun. There are bands that push the upper limits of what a noob can play making it a great genre for beginners that are into rock. There are even a handful that have very good guitars......Scott Sellers probably being the most technically impressive.
The guitarist from Sum41's solos are pretty good too.
Basically "good" doesn't mean "technical" just like "technical" doesn't mean "good".
If a song is catchy and emotionally captivating it can be easy or complex.
I think sometimes people need to realize not every song needs to sound like a swarm of bees and blast beats.....but also lifelong "beginners" need to be self aware enough that just because you like the genre doesn't mean it's technically impressive. It's ok to like simple music because it's about the overall vibe of the song....not the technical capabilities of the individual musician.
as a bassist, punk, and nofx fan, is a pleasure to watch your videos. there is a lot of enrichment listening to your point of view as a teacher and as a newie to punk. thanks a lot.
Means the world, friend! Thank you for stopping by! 🙏🏼
Was looking forward to seeing them. Saw them christmas 2022. They played punk in drublic in full and they fucking SUCKED. Was so disappointing. Fat mike did not want to be there. The WORST live set I've EVER seen. was like what the actual fuck.
@@Mr_jz_12 i cant remember the Last time they came to argentina, 2015 maybe?
I dont know if there is going to be a latin america final tour, it would be sad not seeing them for the Last time.
@@Martinofx they did the Australian farewell a month ago and a mate went, said it was good. Maybe i just caught them on an off day, but geez they were BAD.
Check out Matt freemans bass bunker here on UA-cam
Analyzing the song Eddie, Bruce and Paul from the same record would be great, one of the most insane bass lines I've ever attempted to learn from them
you might wanna check the big drag.
Good call!
“Teachers are forever students” is beautiful. Also how I feel as a musician.
That was so well said about teachers and learning. I'd be proud to call you my teacher
I loved showing my guitar teacher something new and he'd be as excited as me to figure out what was going on
Exactly! If your teacher isn't as excited as you are to learn, they've become jaded and close-minded. I've seen it way, way too many times...
Honestly if you told Mike he’d probably find a way for you to make it to a show
Better be quick, they're on their final tour
@@adamwest1138there’s time. i have 12 more NOFX tix (with approx. 5 total declines)
DONT MISS YOUR LAST CHANCE TO SEE NOFX LIVE 😭
@@Numberofthings I've got my tickets!
I'll be at their last Toronto show.... Can't wait
I saw them last year for their final UK show. It was awesome. Seeing them again in June for their final final UK show 😂
I was there too, I'm planing to go again this year hahhaha
I heard they suck live.
Saw them xmas 2022 in australia. Was the worst live set i've ever seen. Listened to them since i was a kid and always wanted to see them live. They played my favourite album in full. Fat mike made it seem like he did not want to be there. Was like meeting a hero and finding out he was a major douche :'(
@@Mr_jz_12 I thought they were awesome at Brisbane good things
11th or 12th date? ☺️
It's awesome to see you getting so into punk. If you like the playthrough videos, Matt Freeman of Rancid has a channel where he does playthrough of many of their songs.
I've only seen the one for "Journey to the East..." - when I come back to Rancid, I might should do one of those too! It's a whole different animal being able to see the player.
Rancid -White Knuckle Ride. The bass is crazy in it.
Yep Matt’s channel has helped a lot understanding some of those rancid songs.
youtube.com/@MattFreemansBassBunker?si=QeNo8lfC1BIA_N7p
Anything Freeman does is good. He is one of the greatest
Fat Mike is one of my favorite musicians. There's nothing better than an artist who actually engages with his fans, I met Lemmy from Motorhead after a show, he was just chillin' at the bar with his fans and groupies. F*ckin' fantastic.
You gotta do “The Death of John Smith” by NOFX. It’s an older track but still technical.
Brilliant song. Fat Mike always plays down his intellectualism, but that song follows the same narrative as Leo Tolstoy's "The Death of Ivan Ilyich." Furthermore, Tolstoy picked "Ivan Ilyich" because it was the most common name possible. Sort of the Russian equivalent of John Smith. If you know the story, it's clear that it wasn't an accident.
And yeah, their riffs from 1991-1999 or were much busier than the later stuff. For me, that's kind of the golden era of NOFX.
NOFX - Whoops I OD'd (Album Version)
You gotta do some more Matt Freeman! His bass bunker channel would make an excellent react video
Freeman is the goat in this genre!
One of the best teachers I had was a drum teacher, where one week he challenged us to bring drum parts in to challenge him so he could show us how to deconstruct songs that we wanted to learn ourselves and much like you, he was happy to admit he doesn't know everything but it was a great exercise in showing us how to pick apart drum sections and recreate them.
Sounds like a true gem!!
Not to sound like a broken record but please try everything to see them live. This is their farewell tour, so last chance. You will not be disappointed. They've been having a lot of guest musicians and friends come up and play live with them - Fatty should bring you up for this tune !!!!!!!!
I have seen them more than any band I have ever seen. I have probably seem them atleast 50 times. Such a great live band
Yup! I have 12 more NOFX shows, (maybe 13 if they really are gonna be at riot fest in Chicago)
Gotta get it while we can!
Love to Melvin, smelly, hefe and fatty for the years and years of original punk music and great times
@@SecretAgentBeans they played DC, Virginia and Maryland atleast once a year and sometimes they played in MD, VA and DC the same year so I went twice. Best show ever was them, mad caddies and frenzal rhomb in DC. Oh it was so great
Fat Mike is such a good bass player!
I’m in a band called Fire Sale and our bassist is Matt Riddle, the former bassist of Face to Face. You should check out the Face to Face song, Disconnected. Great bass playing!
Oh rad! Great to connect! It was between that song and "Bent but Not Broken", and I went with Bent awhile back, but I'll do "Disconnected" when I circle back. Cheers, Matt! 🤘🏼
@@LowEndUniversity Awesome! My cousin is good friends with NOFX’s drummer. If you are able to make it to the Fort Worth show, let me know!
Also, my band Fire Sale, has some cool Matt Riddle bass lines throughout. We’ve released a handful of songs of you want to check us out. :). I’m the drummer.

i'm a guitar player .. but man .. i love your channel!! it's so interesting! thank you!
Love this! Appreciate the kind words friend!
Yeah man, you're a great teacher, I can tell by your musical IQ and passion, not to mention your honesty.
Keep up the good work!
You’re making me blush! Appreciate the kind words!
NOFX is insta like! Love it! To me my fav bass lane is "The Malachi Crunch", "The Desperation's Gone" and "Just the Flu". True NOFX songs!
Thought I was on an island with Just the Flu 😅🤣
Mark, you’re killing it with these react videos! Keep em coming!
I'm seeing NOFX live in a couple of weeks. Looking forward to it.
We went to the show on Barcelona last year, got 3 here in Canada in August and the FINAL SHOWS in LA in October. NOFX forever!
I'm glad I came across your channel when you started doing the Punk reviews 👍, there's a band my old band played with called Safehouse and that bassist was crazy and finger style. They only did 2 7in records which are low fi recorded on UA-cam. I'll find them an link them on your video 👍
Going to see them this weekend, so excited! Also, these 2 just need to have a weekly show already!! ❤🔥
It's so great to see a different perspective on the songs that I've listened to for years. I'm not a bass player, but you're teaching me something new that I never realized about these songs.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Man I love these vids so much, keep them coming!
More to come! Thanks for the kind words!
Y’all just don’t know how much I’ve seen him grow as a musician based on your requests/comments. I’ve not seen Mark this excited to play bass since he asked me if he could borrow mine to start taking lessons.
Of course I told him, “Naw, go get your own at a pawn shop.” Lol
The last rant was awesome.. hugs man
I hung up my bass years ago but watching your stuff just makes me more and more in the mood of picking it back up again. Just to expand my knowledge and honestly, because it seems fun. Watching a skilled player checking out other skilled players and explaining what they are doing is such a treat. Good job man, catch you on the next video.
Means a lot Daniel. Please pick it back up! Play around for 20 minutes a week and just have fun. I think you'll get the bug again 😎 - see you around!
Another great video. Been a Nofx fan since my early teens so loving the analysis you've been doing of their and the other punk bands songs. Been wracking my brain for songs to suggest! Would love to hear your thoughts on the playing style of some of the upright bass players around. Keep up the good work 👍🏻
Always love when the bass player takes the hand off the fret board. It's fun and lets you interact or make jokes.
This was great. If you’re still looking for suggestions, “Plastique” by One Man Army would be a fun one.
I still play “The Holidays” at open mics - very under appreciated band.
great to hear your comments towards the end, too - the best of us know what we don't know and work forever to fix that
Mark, thank you for diving deep into and giving my favorite band some of your time and consideration. It brings me (as well as others) joy to see Mike's bass lines, the sounds that have stayed with us throughout most of our lives, get celebrated and acknowledged by such an established music teacher such as yourself. If you do another NOFX song, PLEASE do "Whoops I OD'd." It's one of my favorite songs to play on bass.
My pleasure! I’ll absolutely circle back to it at some point. Cheers, David!
Cool to see you adjust your ideas of picking for bass
Saw them at their last show in Melbourne Australia a few mi ths ago, was awesome seeing everyone that ive met at all the pubk gigs over the years for one last show! I even met eric melvin after the show!
Awesome video, man! I don't play bass (I'm a drummer) but I absolutely love learning about the nuances and musicianship of these artists. Thank you so much.
It's a bummer that you're unable to see them in Ft. Worth. The Salt Lake City date of Punk in Drublic is right in my backyard at the University of Utah. I'm ecstatic but sad that it'll likely be the last time I see them. The line-up is bananas good, so if you've ever wanted to visit SLC . . . April 13th, baby! ✌️🤘
I have been really enjoying your punk videos as a (nearly) life long fan of the genre. As someone who has returned to playing bass after a decades long hiatus your final thoughts are really inspiring. I have a physical limitation on my plucking hand which essentially come down to only being able to pluck with my pinkie. I haven't figured out a way to hold a pick either, but I'm working on that! And for the record you seem like you'd be a solid teacher. ✌🏽
Thanks for the expertise and humility. Great video as always!
My pleasure!
Oh man, so long and thanks for all the shoes, punk in drublic and the decline were absolutely life changing for me in high school. Love these guys!
I wish Mike would do more videos like this. One of the top punk bassists out there
I have no reason to watch a bass teacher reacting to songs, but your NoFX videos kept popping up on my recommended, and I really enjoyed your commentary! Really good insight into a band that's been one of my favorites for decades. I couldn't count how many times I've seen them live, but I just had the pleasure to see them for the last time on their final tour, in Japan. They were better than ever!!!
Hey, thanks for giving me a chance! Appreciate your time to watch. I'm working really hard to figure out a way to make one of the last few shows, fingers crossed!
@@LowEndUniversity That's awesome. I hope you have a great time!
in the video for stickin in my eye, there's a clip that's played in reverse of mike playing bass and then breaking the bass. in the video it looks like he's playing starting with downstrokes because he originally played with upstrokes.
Thanks for doing this and staying humble.
Always!
Cliff Burton had a teacher that told him he needed a more advanced peer.
I'm so fucking happy to hear you say that players need to search for a teacher that is synchronic with their goals. Hats off. New subscriber achievement 😊
Rad, thank you for subscribing! I agree, that’s such an important (and overlooked) aspect of finding the right instructor.
NOFX is my favorite punk band. They are so creative. Every new album they came out with, everyone hated. But then you look back and realize how forward thinking they were and how they were constantly growing as a band. I will miss them.
What do ya think of Half Album?
@@coreycarnegie5990 loved it.
Love your videos. You gotta go check out NOFX live on this final tour. Saw them few weeks ago in TX. Hopefully again in July in CO.
If plans end up changing and you can make it Saturday, I'll see you there man! So excited to see NOFX before they go!!
Gotta figure out how to clone myself this week...no progress so far. 😓
Come to Portland to see them! I saw them in Tacoma last year, and i couldn't resist going to the Portland show, too. It's 6 hours' drive to Portland and Tacoma for me but worth it
I’ve loved NoFX since the 90s and it’s so awesome to hear you break down Fat Mike’s playing. It’s so unique and i feel like hearing your context really adds to my enjoyment. Internet wins
Thanks man. Love this song.
I’m not a musician nor do I have the desire and likely ability to be one but I do love music. I love watching your channel and hearing your breakdowns of the music I love and often times music I had never heard of prior to a video you did. Thank you.
Means a lot, and happy you’re here! Cheers! 🙏🏼
Love it. I do the same with the upstrokes on my pick playing. Only not as clean. That tight but relaxed left hand is not me. I waste so much energy flailing around and wear out. The upstroke is also something Joe from 88 fingers louie/rise against does a lot too. Love seeing you check out and review the stuff I grew up listening to and playing along with.... at least the ones I'm capable of playing along with.
Another great video, Mark! Hope you get the chance to make it to a NOFX show, you won't be disappointed! Whoops I OD'd would be an excellent next stop. FYI there are two ways he plays it, the studio version is played solo and really high up on the neck, and live he plays it in the lower octave accompanied with the rest of the band. Another good pick could be Eat the Meek which Mike has said is more complex than people think since it has a different 16-chord progression in each verse. Cheers!
The intro to this song is one of my favorites ever
Thank you for this video!! Love when you do punk/ska!!
Glad you enjoyed it! More to come ☺️
I also get inspired every video of yours to pick up my bass and mess around longer than I normally would
Music to my ears! Never stop playing! ☺️
@@LowEndUniversity Thanks bro, keep up the great work!!
The best punk/ska finger player is Rich from Suicide Machines. His first record with the band was "Steal this Record" thru present.
I highly recommend you come to either Montreal or Toronto to check them out this summer. Both are amazing cities and I’m sure there are enough amazing fans of your channel that would love to show you a great time, myself included. I’ll be at both dates !

On a side note, HWM is on a massive tour to celebrate 30 years. If you get a chance, they are a killer live band.
wasn't expecting their bass lines to be so nuanced, great video
Love it, keep analyzing NOFX songs every once in a while. Mike's playing is so underrated.
You got it!! 🤩
Oh man! Im surprised he didn't do what he did in the record there.... he's doin doubles of D but 2 on the 5th fret of A and then 2 on the open D string and then when the vocals come in, he sticks to one of them and it's sooooo cool
Dude...this is great stuff
I wish I had this kind of resource as a developing musician. Around the 14:00 mark you speak about leaning into those traits that as a musician may feel like a shortcoming. Adapt and make it part of your signature. Love it! (Self taught drummer who wished he’d taken lessons early on)
Love it! Always embrace your uniqueness!
You have got to see these guys live if you can. I'm up to 4 over the years worth it every time
oi
year long nofx fan and musician here!
I mostly play guitar but I dabble in a lot of instruments - non of them proficiently though :D
I do sometimes pick up a bass, but I never spent a lot of time with it. These videos inspired me to learn some punk songs on bass (I am actually doing idiots are taking over bc of your video) and started experimenting with different ways of using the pick on both bass and guitar, so thanks a lot!!
Another fantastic Punk band is Anti-Flag, and for a song with some great bass licks I'd highly recommend The Press Corpse
Cheers :D
That was beautiful thank you!
You are so welcome!
I get to see them in Denver this year 😝
I'm so glad you're getting into the Punk stuff! Check out the band "All We Want" or "Uncontrollable" by the Canadian band The Rebel Spell
Os dois shows mais incríveis q vi na minha vida foram do NOFX, o primeiro em 2006 e o último em 2015 q foi simplesmente avassalador no Circo Voador no RJ!
Honestly one of my favorite parts of this song is that repetitive bass part. It's given me chills lol, there's something ominous about how the song just kinda hollows out there and the bass sitting on that one note is just POWER. Paul mccartney had said the same about when he sits on the same note in Come Together at the end. It's such a strong, grounding effect
Great points here! Contrast is powerful!
This song rules. I really enjoy the bass and guitar riffs.
Man I enjoy your videos especially the ones about punk bass players 🎸🤘
Glad you like them! 🙏🏼
You can come see NOFX in Denver on their tour and many other great bands (ska too!)
July 20th and 21st, worth the short trip from TX 🤘🏻🍌
Check out Chris Aiken (Strung Out)'s bass playthrough of "The Misanthropic Principle". You won't regret it
You should do a bass clinic with fat Mike or have him on the show. Even though you are book trained on bass, you can learn alot from Mike and punk/ska bassists as you already know
Could be fun!
I've almost always played with a pick for 30 years. I was always told that real bass players dont play with a pick. People always tell me that NOFX isnt really music. I feel extremely validated right now. Thanks Low End University!
I always like it when people say "real" bassists don't use a pick. Because then I can safely discount anything else they have to say about bass. Countless huge bands have had players who partially or exclusively play with a pick.
Real bassists can play with all techniques and real musicians won't tell you what is and isn't real music
It's usually the armchair amateurs making up arbitrary rules. Meanwhile you have pros touring the world or playing on session after session, using whatever technique, gear, etc. is needed to get the job done.@@stevec6427
@QuinnNoble Love it, and you’re welcome! Music is music. Anyone trying to gate keep it with purist thinking is toxic to the art 🤢
Thanks for all the punk deep dives. Matt Freeman is the man. And NOFX is my favorite band no one’s ever heard of.
NOFX: The Hepatitis Bathtub and Other Stories is the best biography I've ever read/listened to. The audiobook is read by the whole band and is phenomenonal
Same! I bought the physical book but then heard about the audiobook version so bought it again cause no way could I miss out on hearing the band themselves reading their parts. It's some heavy stuff, but so damn good. Crazy how much shit they all went through.
Like fat Mike eating Cheetos and doing coke
Thanks for doing some NOFX! I still think they are the world’s most underrated band.
You bet! I'm a huge fan, despite being late to the game.
Never too late my friend. I love your attitude towards constantly learning.
I’ve been enjoying your videos, keep up the good work. Matt freeman from rancid does these types of videos too showing how he plays his baselines, that would be awesome to see you watch one of his.
Thanks, will do!
I'll be at the Fort Worth show to experience seeing them for my 6th time. But this will be my favorite because it will be with my Sons who took my love for Punk Rock and ran with it!
So jealous, have a blast!!! 🙏🏼
I suggested one of our songs a while back 😁❤
Mike has great musicianship, he knows when to go and went to pull back.
When I was learning guitar/ bass I always kept my nails cut in-line with the tip of my fingers. Keep the softer sound of the tips, but could curl fingers slightly for a crisper sound.
Also could basically grip my index finger like a pick for faster strum attacks. Allowed for palm muting during.
Basically ditched an actual pick early on. Even on guitar.
I play guitar, not really a bass guy, but I absolutely LOVE hearing your reactions to all these bands and songs I’ve loved for so long! You should DEFINITELY do a song by Banner Pilot, maybe Skeleton Key or Pensacola? And for British bands, check out the Buzzcocks!
Means a lot, thank you! I'll see what I can do!
Bruh!!!!! I’m going to that show in Ft Worth. That would’ve been crazy to see you at that show. 😂 Oh well. I’ve been listening to NOFX since I was a kid. It was the first CD I ever bought, and you’ve answered so many questions I’ve had about Fat Mike’s bass playing for years.
Wish I could’ve, friend! 😌🙏🏼
You should just go to the final shows in LA. You'll get to see a few of the bands you've reacted to. I'll buy you some beers if you do!!
Now you’re tempting me with a good time. 🤪🍻🍻
@LowEndUniversity yes, let the temptation compel you!
He’s lead vocals also, so singing whilst playing these bits. Loves thin picks also
I'm going to the s
SLC show. And if I was you, I would roll out to the Denver show. Two days with some of the best bands 4 NOFX albums
Portland, OR - June 29 & 30
Just because I love them I'd like Buzzcocks song What Do I Get, and because it's awesome Gang Of Four - What We All Want. Two seminal UK punk bands.
Im a big fan of that particular picking technique, and use it myself often. I was surprised to hear that he uses a 0.6mm pick though - I use 1.5mm dunlops!
If you want to hear the coolest bass playing from a punk band, there’s no one better for my taste than Mike Watt from Minutemen. He used his fingers most of the time, and played with so much intensity and emotion, while also playing pretty technical stuff.
I did a video featuring both Minutemen and fIREHOSE recently here! ua-cam.com/video/4I9vCmI2stA/v-deo.html
I love that Fat Mike shows up in the comments. I know this is a long shot but I would love if you would cover Dillinger Four's "Folk Song."
You should really try and check these guys out before they stop touring if you can, I’ve seen them and they put on a real good show. Growing up NOFX were massive for me mikes lines have always been so fun. I’d really love to be able to play as well as him. Really enjoying the videos recently dude!
Seeing if I can make it happen! Fingers crossed. Always appreciate your comments man!
