this changed everything. I was making a bag handle and I thought of the little bumps and it started to bother me. I stumble upon your video after a few others on straight edges, but nothing as perfect and.. radical! skip the turning chain, you'd never think it's possible, but it actually looks way prettier now, so thank you! xxx
Thank you! Because every other person seems to have a different method, and they’re all complicated! With a bunch of different rules! Like on the first one don’t do this, but on the next two do this and then after that, we do this and this, and then, at the end, you have to go back to this….. seriously, yours was the first one. That was just easy! Omit the turning chain! THAT’S IT!!! Thank you! Thank You! THANK YOU!!!!! I’m a BEGINNER! I need it to be easy!
Modifying the turning chain I get, and have done for a long time. What impresses me most, is that you give the foundation a beautiful knitted-edge look to it by skipping the front and back loops, and using only the bottom loop (base loop, spine, etc). I've done that for years to make softer edges for seaming, but will alter to use fl or bl if I have different joining requirement, such as on garments or certain textures I wish among squares--unless I "lace" them with intricate, final row ch-st weaving, etc. Nicely done video! I think this will help beginners gain more confidence in even scarf-making. Keep on Crocheting!
I’m going use the stacked single crochet. Thank you for that Nikki, I’m working on a blanket for my 4th great gran and I’m going to definitely employ this method!!!!
I literally just went out on a limb and tried this a few minutes ago on my own. Edges are so hard for me. Unsure if I should continue my experiment, I found your video 😀 yay! Thanks again.
It's yarn. Buy, e.g., a RH Pound of Love, and just experiment. It's worsted weight, and an I or J hook will keep it open enough to play, but tight enough to show. Most of all, have fun!
My hdc rows also look smooth by doing just one turning chain at the end of each row (and not counting it as the first stitch). You end up doing the last hdc of each row into the corner of the work, a bit lower than the row, but it’s making a pretty smooth edge. For the foundation, you only skip one chain and start hdc into the second ch. I thought I was doing it wrong but it’s actually better! Thanks for this video!
@@aVa-tt3zf if you start your work with chain 22 then yes you would skip the last ch and hdc into the remaining 21 chains and continue each row with 21 hdc… I think.
Thanks, Nicki, for this great tip... I'll definitely use it from now on! Enjoy the time with your family in your beautiful city (wish I still lived there!) and all of you stay safe! Char in Phoenix 🌴🌵🌵🌵
So what is the purpose of that turning chain for SC/HDC if height is not an issue? Seems so much less complicated without it! Thanks for this tutorial.
So my question to you is, I am doing a picture blanket, and if you skip a stitch, it kind of messes the whole blanket with this mess. My my blanket up at all if I did this method.
I don't understand what you are skipping? Are you meaning that you don't do the 'chain 2 or 3', then turn, at the end of each row that patterns usually ask you to do? Will the row count be off if you don't do that? Thank You!
My issue is crocheting 🧶 and the row DONOT stay in the length… I will start w/22inches and after each row the row is WIDER!!!!! What I’m I doing wrong?!?! I will try the no chain and turn trick. Thanks!
Question! I started my first throw for my carch (any Aussie Kath & Kim fans? Ok sorry) and I have the bumpy edges. If I change to this method would it look terrible? I'm like a third of the way done and don't want to frog it, I kinda like seeing how bad I was when I started it compared to now a year later. I've been going slow with it and doing amigurumi mostly. Idk if I should just continue and make a border. I tried this turn method once and it seemed to make my HDC row not as high. Do I just make the loop even longer?
Sounds like you need to place a stitch marker in your first st, so you don't crochet into the wrong thing... also keep the loop taller when you turn your work, I noticed she did that. Good luck! Crocheting isn't that easy but we learn!
EDIT- Went to the straight edges tutorial and figured it out lol! No matter how many videos I watch, I'm still having major issues with at least 1 edge, usually both. I feel like I'm missing a last stitch or something. Will keep trying.
Did this tip help you? Have you tried it yet?😍
yes i just tried it, this was so helpful, thanks so much
It's beautiful. I'm never using turning chains ever again! :)
I frogged a whole hood just to make the edges like this since at the end i have to crochet around the whole hood

Love it!!!!

I was so flabbergasted at how simple the solution was. Thank you

Thank you so much for the tip! This really helps when I am making a ridged waist band for tops, blankets, scarfs, etc! This really helps!
Awesome tip. I'm going to start my current project over using you tip. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you so very much for the tip on the edges. Thank you for sharing this video with me. God bless and have great night.
I’m glad it was helpful 😀 enjoy
Thank you so much...I was catching hell with those crazy bumps....smh. Now with your help I don’t have that problem 😉👍🏽
UGH! I should have known this trick huhuhu I really hate those end bumps. Thank you for sharing this tip :) God bless you!
Useful tutorial to get beautiful edges. Lovely share.
I’m glad it helped you. ❤️
OH my goodness thank you so much it actually works. I will be using this tip from now on it took me forever to find a method that worked for me.
Glad it helped! You can find the DC version here: www.nickishomemadecrafts.com/alternative-turning-chain/
Thank You! Just what I was looking for. I´m working with worsted weight and it works perfectly!

Are you sure about not counting the stitch
And what makes the row is lower the other ?what's wrong she make

So glad it was helpful to you 😀 stay safe as well
Thank you so much Nicki. I love how my edges are looking on my scarf. The edging is so nice & neat looking & needs not edging now.
Thank you for this tip. Lovely straight edges now 😃

Some have trouble finding the last stitch so that’s why it’s there
I love your curls hooks! Lol I have a bunch of them too!

Stacked, for sure!! 👍🏻👍🏻⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️❤️💜
In case of hdc from the foundation do i also start with 2nd chain to make the 1st row or do i skip 2 chains and start the hdc from 3rd chain?
Those dreaded bumps of 'death' are gone! Thanks 😁
What a good idea, love it 🌼
This worked a great thank you!
This is brilliant Thank you, Can I ask what size and make of Furl hook is this you are using ? Thanks
Don’t remember since it’s just a tutorial

No I haven't but going to try it
Thank you so much. Helps out alot
You are so welcome ❤️
Hi how do I count rows in single crochet and do I start with the foundation row
Thank you so much for the tips!👍🧶

I have a question :)
My project is only at the back loop. So still the same?
Great video
This was awesome tip thank you
OK, we skip turning chain, BUT we crochet in the 1st. In traditional method, we make 1sc turning chain, then we skip the 1st stitch. Am I rigt?
👍
That’s correct
Thx much dear ❤️❤️❤️
It works well for me
Yay 😁 So glad it was helpful
Amazing thank you
Thank you!
Great video for single crochet but in this and your last video you still didn’t show hdc

THANK YOU!! :)
Just found your channel. Thank you so much for your tips.
I tried this and found that my rows were getting shorter and shorter…. What did I do wrong?
Sounds like you need to place a stitch marker in your first st, so you don't crochet into the wrong thing... also keep the loop taller when you turn your work, I noticed she did that.

You’ll need stitch markers for this 😀 mark your first and last stitch of the row
didnt work for me. it gave me weird loops and made it harder to get into the last/first stitch
How to share pics of what I tried
