Been waiting on this one for ages...it's been 10 years since my grandmother died and Battenberg was her favourite. Feeling nostalgic and inspired to bake now!
Awh so happy to hear that you have been inspired :)
Stumbled on this video as I'm making more time to enjoy my hobby of baking and was looking for inspiration. I'm American so I didn't have this growing up, but saw it in an episode of "Call The Midwife" years ago and have always been curious about it. After watching the first time I ordered a Battenberg pan. It's so much smaller than I imagined it. Anyway, I made it tonight for the first time. I piped the batter into the pan and it was much easier than spooning it in, I imagine. But the cakes are currently cooling, the marzipan is made and I cannot wait to take this to work tomorrow morning and show it off. Thanks for walking me through, Sally.
Holy pink cakes! This has been my favourite since I was a 70s born kid and first tried it when I was 4 in ‘78! Been a favourite ever since. Now, having the queens show me how to make my own whenever I want and not a glimpse of Mr Kipling anywhere to be seen… I’m in awe! Thank you kindly.

I can’t wait to chomp down!
hehehe I mean Mr Kipling does have a place here but maybe for French fancies from now on haha
The colors and final touches work so well with Sally's bubbly personality, I love it
I always thought Battenbergs are difficult. You showed it is absoluuuuutely doable. I love the marzipan cover tech, so cool!
Well, the name Battenberg is german. Some of them moved to Britain and later changed it to Mountbatten, which means the same, but in English. The cake however is 100% british, and only known in Germany as a British import, if people know it at all.
Or... we imported the royal family from Germany, and they gave us the recipe...
o
Royal family was German. Wasn't until WW1, King changed last name surname Saxe - Coburg and Gotha to Windsor.
Diana roots were a big deal bc she's . more English compared to royals, who were german
I've never had one of these. They look so good.
I love the way Sally pats the cake at the end with so much love and affection 😍
Guess what I'm baking this Saturday lol. But can we take a second to appreciate how bomb your hair looks today??
Yes, it does, but for baking it should be covered.
I love this cake! It's a classic for a reason and is perfect for the coming Spring!
You guys make baking such a happy time for me. Thank you so much!!
O my what a blast from the past 👍🏻
Just ordered a Battenberg cake tin
Can’t wait
Love all the different techniques
Ooh! Battenberg has always been my favourite!!! Will definitely be giving this a try
Always reminds me of my childhood. My all time favourite cakes. ❤
Торт Баттенберг выглядит красиво и аппетитно ! Спасибо за рецепт !
Yummy. Definitely one of my favourites. I love marzipan
Wonderful news to have a real Battenberg cake recipe from the Cupcake Jemma Channel - especially Sally, my favourite adorable girl - I always wanted to make it! So pretty cake and so elegant, and we in Hungary don't have it here.
You are amazing, Sally!
I'm a 43-years old computer programmer and baking is just my occasional hobby. But I freaked out seeing I could buy a SPECIAL TIN for this!!! :o Yeah I'm perfectly normal middle-aged guy :D I really should let myself buy it (but our kitchen is already stuffed full of other stuff). Great video, I had frequent drooling which means you're doing it right. As always, it's a perfect video: instructions are clear, the camera shows stuff in enough detail, there are good tips, Sally is nice and genuinely enthusiastic. I love watching you, guys :)
Treat yourself to the tin Jozef, you deserve it!
Love this cake!
Sally that was delightful!
I remember having this on Mad Hatter day during my work secondment in England. Lovely to see how it's actually made xx
Looks beautiful! But I‘ve never seen it in Germany! It’s a British thing! Head over to Wikipedia 🤓: The first cake was baked in 1884 to celebrate Prince Louis of Battenberg marrying Princess Victoria, Queen Victoria’s granddaughter and Prince Philip’s grandmother. AND The large chequered patterns on emergency vehicles in the UK are officially referred to as Battenburg markings because of their resemblance to the cake. 🚑 So cool!
No way!!! Hahah I love all this thanks!
The royals are German
I love listening to you Sally you are a great baker. I will have to give this a go. ♥️
thank you :)
This is the cutest cake ever Love it🎂🎂❤️💖🍰
Will try this sometime or something similar this week. Thank you Sally😍🥰
battenberg cake is so delicious😍😍
Soooo I've been gone from this subscription for a awhile but now I'll have to go back and find more videos with you I love you attitude
Glad to have you back Ronda!
Thank you Sally
This looks amazing! Totally gonna try this soon!
It looks hard to make, but that has been explained very easily. Must give it try
Ooh ! Love the way you did the marzipan covering. Very clever indeed !
Right! A lot easier than trying to do the whole thing in one go!
It looks perfect 💕
You can also use 2 identical small loaf pans. 1 for each colour 😃
Very good tip, thanksb
Brilliant video thank you! My brother wants this for his birthday! Great instructions thanks again.
Hi ! It's very pretty and looks delicious 😋
I love battenburg.
can u do bueno cupcakes next week
I love it!!!!
I loved these back in the day in Newcastle, don't see them much here in Alberta, now I really fancy a Battenberg! Thanks so much for the DIY marzipan, only see it on Xmas cakes now and that was my favourite part. Definitely saving this recipe. 👌 😊🍁
I love it! 🤍💛💗🤍💛💗
Nice surprise! Love battenburgs! I also love how you could technically change the colours and flavours to whatever you like too 😁😁
yes. I've seen recipes for chocolate and orange.
Great job from Clemson, South Carolina!
Looks really cute and tasty
Good to be here, I am taking notes for this Easter celebration for my family gathering. Be blessed, Yana.
Bello, y luce delicioso.🥰
I have never heard of this cake. It looks really decadent. I will definitely give it a try.
Wow that’s a nice way to wrap the cake with Marzipan. I was imagining one big sheet then wrapping it around. The cake is so cute
Hi I really love your videos imagine your videos have made a ten year old know how to bake you are a blessing to me ❤❤❤❤❤❤
THank you!! x
You are absolutely delightful and your cake looks so delicious, greetings from the US!
Looks great 😁👍
I had one of these in a restaurant in Manchester it was raspberry and lemon sponge it tasted amazing !!’
oh yum!
Ooo sounds good! Where from?
Bull and Bear
Sally is looking gorgeous!!
You go girl 🤩
That looks wonderful. I made a chocolate mint batterburg for my aunt's birthday and used a small jellyroll pan and some foil dividers. Your pan looks more convenient. Lol
great tip with the pan and foil!
Agreed looking good, the cake too.
Love this ❤
That is a much easier and prettier way to cover with the marzipan than the way I have done it. -rolling out a huge piece and then turning the cake over to cover it all. It’s very difficult to get crisp, squared off edges that way. I love the way you did it, cutting and covering one side at a time.
Super awesome 👌
Angel cake is nice too!
I love battenberg
When you know that you are DEFINITELY not gonna do it, cause hate marzipan, but stick around for Sally ❤️
I’m the same! Think I will try fondant lol
@@teresap5366 yeah, thought the same , the aesthetics that is cute ;)
She's worth sticking around for! ;)
I hate marzipan too, generally, but if you haven't had the homemade kind, maybe give it a go. Make a tiny amount with the same proportions of almond and icing sugar as in this recipe (e.g. 30 g almond meal, 36 g icing sugar), pat it out, and put it on top of a slice of fruitcake or something to taste it. I don't know what they do to the commercial kind, but it's disgusting, while a small layer of the real thing is a lot more palatable to me personally.
Very nice and yummy ❤️❤️👍👍
Not something I will make but still loved watching!! Xx
Thanks for the support Georgie!
I followed this recipe with the exception of using two large eggs opposed to three small. Next time I will definitely be buying small eggs as the vanilla sponge collapsed like I've never had a cake collapse before!
The pink sponge tasted great though 👍
Battenberg cake was created for the marriage between Princess Victoria (granddaughter of Queen Victoria) and Prince Louis of Battenberg in 1884
I love how she eats the cake with her hands. Meanwhile, the fork sits alone on the counter.
LOL!
I missed you!
I was always under the impression this Battenberg Cake (aliases: Domino Cake, Church Window Cake, Neapolitan Roll) is an unapologetically and uniquely British confection, having morphed into a confectionery symbol of the country since its creation in the late 1800s. Also, rumoured the cake was created as a wedding gift for Prince Louis of Battenberg and Princess Victoria (granddaughter of Queen Victoria) and paid tribute to England's newest royal family member by using his last name as the title of the confection. Due to the rise of anti-German sentiments across England during World War I, the prince eventually changed his family name to Mountbatten. The Battenberg Cake, however, lives on.
Definitely making these for easter this year, thanks so much for the recipe as always xxx ! Quick question: if I make them the day before/the morning of , how would I keep the marzipan from drying out? just clingfilm it?
Yes clingfilm it nice and tight :)
This might have to be one I shall try to give it a go. It'll be for my hubby though as I don't like almonds and marzipan. He loves it. Oh, and by the way your hair looks lovely Sally! X
Oh thank you!
Recipe request.. I watched this week the mermaid cake Jemma did, could you guys do a barbie cake? I’d love to make one for my daughter this year, where you put the barbie in the middle and the cake is her dress! ☺️☺️☺️ also mini cheese cakes I searched your channel for them and couldn’t find anything, lots of big ones though I need to give a try 🤤😋
Please a cinnamon muffin recipe
Bon Appétit 🤍💟🤍💟
My brother is vegan and loves marzipan so I make him big slabs of it with water instead of egg. It needs ever so slightly less water but I just go but a few spoonfuls at a time until it gets to the right consistency.
It's a great snack to be fair!
Me and my brother always called this window cake as kids
Haha I can see why!
Loveeeeee you FrOM MÉXICO !!!!!!!!!
It looks so good and I really wanna try and make this if my mindset is ok again. Sally and the rest of the team also of course you guys made me smile feeling lousy as I am these days but happy to have seen this. And I love Sally that you always wanna take a bite straight away!
Hope you feel better soon Janey!
Early yall
Love you guys❤️
Oh Sally, no you’re adorable!!
Great video. What is the size of your Battenberg cake tin??? I looked online and there several sizes.
Woooo beautiful sharing ❤️ best'wishes from sahenaaz
I hope you share recipes that are sugarfree or with sweetener alternatives for diabetic viewers that also wants to enjoy baked goods 🙏🏻
Not trying to be an internet perv, but I just love some British women’s accents and voices. Such beautiful voices! I made this quite complicated Battenburg Cake once and it just drove me crazy 🤦🏻♂️. I’ll have to give this one a try, it looks way easier.
LOL, give this one a go, it's a lot easier than you might think!
Probably a stupid question but is almond flour the same as ground almonds?
Yes, it's the same thing😊And hey, no question is a stupid one.
@@tracycarr3749 thank you 🙏 🤗
@@SVMSICE Your welcome😉
I'm begging pls I wanna see your take on Far Breton my favorite custard cake
Can you make a chocolate souffle please? 😍
Going to try this!! Can I use 2 large eggs instead of 3 small??
Yes but maybe don’t add all the dry ingredients straight away. Hold a little bit back incase the marzipan ends up too dry :)
@@mindfulbaking thanks so much! 🙏 x
I wish it was easy as you made it look, my cake tasted lovely but it certainly didn't look like yours :) !!
Hi everyone, just been researching the tins but there seems to be different sizes. Any idea which size Sally used or would it not make any difference only they are around £24 on Amazon and I don't want to get the wrong size. Thanks
I have to admit, I always buy Mr Kiplin
battenberg. They are so good it doesn't seem worth the effort of making them.
Haha sometimes you can't beat a Mr Kipling! But also, it's a fun one to try out! ;)
Looks yummy. How do you store it?
In an airtight container :)
Remember when Jemma used to be on cupcake Jemma, and that is what we subscribed to?
she does come on the channel. she has a daughter to look after
Hey! Jemma's still here - but so are the whole gang that make this channel work!
@@CupcakeJemma Sorry, that was not meant to be bitchy. Guess I was just trying to say I miss her face too.
Hi Sally, when you tell us the oven temp , is that for fan assist, or ordinary oven temp?
By the way , love your channel, very good..
Any ideas on how to make this without that tin? 2 square tins? And double the quantities?
Hi, looking for the link on how to make the pasteurized egg white?
I had been waiting for the battenberg recipe for a long time. I tried it once and it didn't look so good. I made it from vanilla and pistachio. I mixed pistachio cream with the batter and it turned out to be a very ugly color. I should have put food coloring and aroma instead of cream, right? Thanks for your videos 😘😘
owesome recp plz share batten berg tray link
Is there a way to do it without the almond flour?
💖💖💖💖
