- Hello Darlings, this is the last episode for Season 2 of Dining Through The Decades! This 1940's Cottage Pie is absolutely delicious and is by far one of the best meals I have ever eaten! I do hope you try it out, I promise you will love it!
Thank you all so much for hanging out with me for this 2nd season of the Cooking Show, I have had so much fun! The next time you see the kitchen it will be all done up because we are starting the kitchen renovations in 1 week!
I love you all and I'll see you next week for another video!
Lots of love,
Sage Xx
Here is Carolyn's website "The 1940's Experiment": the1940sexperiment.com/2010/0...
Cottage Pie
1 lb mince beef ( note a weeks ration of mince beef for one person was about 1/2 lb )
several large potatoes
2 oz cheese
dried herbs (Rosemary & Thyme work well)
salt and pepper
beef stock like bovril ( 1 pint or more)
bisto gravy powder
peas and finely chopped carrots and onion optional
blob butter or margarine
Method
Brown the mince
Add the chopped veggies (optional)
Add salt and pepper and herbs
Add beef stock, stir and simmer for 15 minutes (thickening towards the end by mixing bisto powder with a little cold water to a runny paste and adding to beef stirring all the time- beef sauce should be quite thick!)
Meanwhile chop up all the potatoes into small chunks
Place in salted hot water and bring to the boil until tender and drain.
Mash with generous blobs of butter or margarine, add salt and pepper to taste
Finally add milk so mash is spreadable
Place beef sauce in a small cooking tray with deep sides or shallow casserole dish
Pipe or spread mashed potato on top
Sprinkle with 2 oz of grated strong cheddar and some dried herbs if you like
Place in oven for 20 minutes at 200 c
Finish off under broiler/grill to brown top
Serve with steamed fresh veggies!
Serves 4 with veggies

There's just something wholesome and heartwarming about watching someone make, eat and enjoy their food. I was watching this whilst making a veggie bake and I feel it turned out better because I was feeling so happy and wholesome whilst watching this. Lovely video!
I am drawn to this series because of Ms. Lilleyman's obvious respect and love for those who came before, dealt with tough times, and came out champions despite whatever obstacles they had to face down. EDIT: Also, I like the part where the bag of peas came apart on you. Much fun! (It's happened to me, LOL.)
Thank you for your contribution, Sage.
You're delightful, Sage. Something about your voice is so comforting, and the pie looked amazing. Totally making it this week!
I'm gonna miss your cooking every Saturday!!! I can't wait for season 3!!!
Aw thank you so much Mel!! That is so sweet of you! xx
Me too! 😭
Seeing you slice into that at the end made me think of the Shepherd's Pie that we serve on the airplane from Frankfurt, Germany. I've had to explain to the Germans what it is, as they don't eat it, but it's our best coach meal!! I always tell them to eat it (always choose the beef!) and they do love it!! Got a real kick out of the "saucy" remark and Austin Powers!
I'm from Newfoundland and we also make something similar called Sheppards pie, love it so much.
I've been vegan (for my health) I have made a vegan version of this :) I used the impossible ground meat, vegetable stock instead of beef gravy; for a hearty flavor I use mushroom powder with 1 cup of veg. stock. Adding carrots, peas onion and garlic to the mix. To make my mashed potatoes I used vegan butter (soy free) and home made almond milk ( dried almonds soaked in purified water over night then ground and pressed) I bought a nut milk maker from amazon that works great.
i've made it with lentils instead of beef
Vegan for the animals 🙋♀️
Love cottage pie it's kind of our most comfort meals that you want down or it's just cold and winter
I made this tonight for my family, my parents finally could come down from Sydney to Melbourne. It was a huge hit, everyone said it was indeed delicious! I had some Our Mate aka Marmite in the cupboard so I added a blob of that because it's always great in gravy.
This was always one of my favorite dishes, here in the USA, we call it shepherds pie when I make it I’ll even add a tiny amount of tomato paste, about 2 Tbsps. It gives the sauce a little bit more umami. Sometimes I’ll substitute the carrots for parsnips and turkey for the ground beef. Anyway you make it it awesome. Another favorite growing up was what we call creamed chipped beef on toast/biscuit, another yummy meal from the era
We called are cream chipped beef shit on a shingle,I think I'll make some,I do love it 😁
So yummy for this time of year, Autumn where I'm located. It turned out beautifully just like all the other dishes you made. I really love this series and hope you plan to continue on with a season 3 and beyond.
Oh that means a lot, thank you! 💕
I didn’t know that potato peel pie was a real recipe! The first time I even heard of it was in the movie “ The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society.” It was a cute movie, and you kinda look like Lily James, y’all are both beautiful!:)
i believe i remember reading that the movie was based on a true story.
That movie was amazing!😊
Read the book, it's even better :)
@@lilyn7497 I loved that book so much! I think of it often.
I agree, Crystal!! Sage does look like Lily James. I’ve always thought that.
Love your wartime cooking series. The biggest issue wartime housewives had was getting the flavour enhancers, like onion, spices etc.
Sage I’m really not one to cook but this video inspired me to try this recipe on my own 😊. It took me a little longer than I thought (I wasn’t using enough liquid or heat at first) but in the end it turned out really good 😊. I’m so proud and so happy to have found your channel. Been watching for over a year now:)
Aww that’s so great to hear you tried the recipe out! Thank you so much for being subscribed for over a year(that’s amazing!!!) 💞😊
@@SageLilleyman Hello Sage! I LOVE your " Dining Through the Decades" series, keep it up! By the way, as an Italian, I notice the striking similarity between the cottage pie filling and our Ragù, which is what you call bolognese sauce. It's something historic, that dates back to the 19th century and has evolved with time. Nowadays, it's staple of italian cusine. I've seen your "Italian Sauce" video and noticed that you really liked it, so if you'd like to try your hand at making Ragù I will pass your my grandma's recipe!
By the way, you should post more of your bloopers, I find those amazing!
Have a good day
- An Italian Fan
My daughter and I truly appreciate your lovely videos...
Congratulations on a great season! I am absolutly trying this one out soon!
Thank you so much Jane! Let me know how it goes! xx
Hi Sage! I join the chorus of those who have already expressed their appreciation of you & what you have learned & share with us! ......and while studying nursing. I am a retired nurse; know full well how much this ole world needs lovely souled nurses as you will be. Keep it up! Blessings!😊
I love your laugh and sense of humor. You always make me smile.
I love her spontaneous laughter,, what a hoot! Few thoughts, the carrot and potato scraps could be used to feel the chickens? But if not, you should have a compost bin going with all the veggie scraps you have then grow your own veggie in your own victory garden..also I never used a powdered gravy like that, is it popular there? Love shepards pie(lamb) but cottage pie ( ground beef) is good to!one last tip..never water your garden during the day as it may burn the plants. Only water in early a.m. or evening 😉
I absolutely love the way you laugh whenever you make a mistake.
James does a great job of editing the vids. Made me snicker what he shows the bit from The Spy Who Shagged Me, “Oh Behave”
I love the one little pea that popped up through the mashed potatoes. It wanted its moment. 😂
Yum yum one of my favorites . Will miss seeing these on Saturday night
Hello Sage, new subscriber here!
Quick tip my mom taught me about making mashed potatoes- rinse them after they've cooked. It helps take the starchy taste out! I haven't seen any other comments about it so I thought I'd share some American Southern wisdom ;)
Lovely video! And lovely channel!
Sage! You are such a joy to watch! I watched this while eating my breakfast and looking at the snow falling outside (!!!) and it was the perfect way to start my morning. Also when you were laughing at the potatoes sounding like someone using the toilet - LOL!
It’s a long standing family favorite here.
I just made this last week but I call it “Shepard’s pie” keep doing what you’re doing me & my daughter LOVE watching your videos 💕
Shepards Pie is actually made with ground lamb , mutton specifically. Ground beef is cottage pie. I say yummy 🙂
I used to call it Shepards pie as well until I learned that meant ground lamb rather than beef.
@@ashleymichelle7342 yeah but bc ground beef can be used as a substitute the name can still be used . All I know is it’s good lol
Shepherd's pie should have Lamb, clue in the name.
I love watching the little chicken butts waddle away from the camera. Makes me smile, so cute!
This is what cooking is all about rustic simple 😋 food , not fancy restaurant stuff , as a single girl these recipes have seen me in good stead
THANK YOU SO MUCH 💓
I just made Shepherds Pie using lentils. I usually add a bag of frozen mixed vegis and always make extra potatoes for the top. Love the crispy/browned potatoes! I make extra for the freezer, so I have a quick healthy meal on hand!
Yep love cottage pie! This recipe looks yummy, will be making soon, likely next week, thanks😊
For everyone correcting--cottage = beef & shepard's = lamb. And I am in the US. My guess is many didn't like/want lamb so used beef and still called it shepard's😉
I grew up eating this as Shepard's pie and didn't learn the difference until about 10yrs ago (I'm 55) . Often wondered why and I guess you might be right. We never had cheese on it though, that's news to me .
Definitely saving these to watch again 😱😆
I have made this recipe three times. It is different than any other cottage pie recipe I have ever seen however it is the only recipe I will use from the first time I made it. This is so so good. Last time I made a double batch and got some of the mini loaf pans and made individual servings and put them in the freezer for lunches. This is so very good. Thank you for sharing this recipe. I am sending you all of the love that I have in my heart.
We call it shepherds pie in the US. We put seasoned beef with onion and ketchup or tomato paste, then top with corn and cream corn in the middle and mashed potatoes on top, topped with a little butter.
Your meal looks so good. Thank you for sharing this. God bless you.m
You call it Shepherd's pie incorrectly, Shepherd's Pie is another British dish that should contain Lamb. What do Shepherds look after ?
You can make a delicious soup by reserving the boiled water from the potatoes. By adding a few chopped carrots , onions celery and any thing else you have bits of in your pantry like barley , rice , or lentils will add substance to the soup . Any kind of dried beans or dried split peas or small portions of frozen vegetables that need to be used from your freezer will also be good. The starchy salty water from the drained potatoes is a great base for a terrific soup. Yum 😋
I would love to watch a vintage Thanksgiving.
i'm not sure she would do one, as she's Aussie and we don't do thanksgiving over here. She might for a themed video... but in Aus its spring and it's not a holiday we have :)
I like how I found this channel today and I’ve just been binge watching all of this while I’m at work, Now to go home and make homemade dinner
Oh how i wish you had a "Christmas playlist" of your videos... i just watched your video making Ginger biscuits, and oh my word i need to try those. And wanted to see more ^_^
You look adorable today! We always called that Shepherd’s Pie. I love your retro kitchen tools! I have a bunch of them. I hang them on the wall as decorations.
Here is the US we call it Shepherd’s Pie. (I don’t know if that’s where you’re at or not. I just know it’s where I am and that’s what we’ve always called it.) Though after I lived in England I learned that their Shepherd’s Pie is made with lamb mince and not the beef mince. Which makes sense of you think about it.
@@MrTeer2008 yes technically Sheppard's pie is made with lamb mince. But I know my mum always called it Sheppard's pie no matter what mince she used for it.
@@kiymberly1990 a lot of people do. I just know it’s more common to do so here in the US than in the UK. That’s all I was saying.
Shepherds pie is made with lamb, and cottage pie is made with beef- but my family calls everything Shepherds pie as well :)
@@MrTeer2008 She's in Melbourne Australia.
Ohhhh I can feel a cottage pie for tea coming on 😂😂 That looks delicious Sage! I absolutely love Carolyn Ekins from The 1940's Experiment, her website has lots of wonderful wartime recipes and information on it. Sorry to see the end of another 'Dining Through The Decades' they are so enjoyable.... x
Awww thank you Melanie xxxxx
Thank you so much Melanie! Oh yes, you must make it for tea!! I also love Carolyn's blog she has the best 1940's recipes! 😊
@@1940sExperiment .... You are very welcome Carolyn 😊 x
Many decades ago I lived and worked in Sydney. I had the honor and pleasure of dining at the home of a professional acquaintance and this exact dish was served. I can still taste it! Savory and incredibly delicious. My friend told me her mother used to make this every Sunday for the family during the war. I lost the recipe and am so thrilled you've shared it!
Here in the States we put Tater Tots on a similar meat mixture. I add cheese and finely diced green chili peppers to the meat. I also *bake* the Tater Tots *separately*, and when the meat mixture is baked I set the baked Tater Tots on it. I like crisp Tots! Occasionally I'll use mashed potatoes instead. Yours looks so delicious, and the addition of herbs is something I will try next time with mashed.
I’m from the uk and this is my go two meal I make every week so delicious 😂🥰
It reminds me of shepherd's pie so I am absolutely in for this recipe! Thanks for sharing!
My Mom made this often when I was growing up and always enjoyed it 🙂! As other commenters have noted, we call this Shepherd's Pie in the US. I'm now vegan so I plan to have this soon and veganize it! I'm in Florida and we don't usually get to enjoy Autumn weather but, so far, we've had two cool weekends in a row. Last night, it was in the mid 40s (Fahrenheit), daytime highs in the 50s and 60s and next weekend, they predicting it will be even cooler. So, it will be a perfect time to make this recipe!
I've ❤❤❤ed this season of Dining Through the Decades and looking forward to a season 3!
Traditionally, shepherds pie was made with lamb, whilst cottage pie was made with beef or pork, but basically, it's the same thing. It's one of our stables in my household
Loved this episode! I’m going to try this recipe very soon! It looks like it’s super fun to make, and delicious. :)) Thank you Sage! You make me laugh, no matter how hard the day has been. :))
My mom made this yummy dish. One of my favorites. I made a Mexican version with ground beef, chopped bell peppers, onions, paprika, cumin, salt, pepper, and topped it off with cornbread. Then added sour cream when it was cooled a little bit.
Hello Sage! Love your videos and look forward to them each week! Today especially as I am home sick. Thanks for the new recipe and fun escape.
Since you have chickens your peelings never need to go to waste Sage!
This has been a staple in my family for many years!
Making this for dinner tonight ! Can’t wait. Im so glad I found your channel its so much fun. I have chickens too , just 3 Roni, Frances and Rosemary
Looks good and ☺️ yummy. 🇺🇸😎 I love your recipes and I can't wait for season 3 ☺️🤗 everyone have a awesome week and weekend 🤗😎🥰
EEK cant wait i love your vids. you should also o more days in a life of a 1950's house wife!!!
This dish actually looks really delicious!! Your apron is darling and so is your hairdo!
I love this vintage food section on your channel. I am proud that you have such a beautiful love for the season like all the ones that follow you. I would like to see if you could put substitutes in Spanish? for people who don't understand English very well. ♥
Looks Delicious,enjoy your Saturday.
Me encanta cuando muestran el patio con sus gallinas, es simple, es hermoso nada mas le permite a uno soñar con ese tipo de vida. Muchas gracias. ANA Salazar
Beautiful spring garden!
This series really makes my day! I love to watch them and I’ve already made three of these recipes!!
I cannot begin to tell you how much I enjoy these videos! I live in the US, and my grandmother was born in 1928 so she was very much a mom and housewife of the time period you represent. It makes me feel so nostalgic even though I (clearly lol) wasn’t there to experience any of it.
Would you ever consider making aprons and dresses or things like that to sell on an Etsy shop? I have zero sewing skills but would love to purchase some of the beautiful items you’ve made. Thanks!
Looks delicious. Thanks for another great season. Looking forward to season 3.
Love your videos, just a quick note. Bisto powder you add cold water to slake it. Bisto gravy granules you need to add recently boiled water. And both products, need to be added to boiling liquid and then simmered. This may be why your gravey didn't thicken straight away xxx
I love the grey top you've got on today, I would like one like it! The recipe looks delicious. Thank you for sharing with such a sunny presentation :)
On my menu for next week. Your laugh is hilarious.
hahaha thank you 😂
Noooo, Dining Through The Decades - Season 2 can't be over. I love this series on your channel. Your the best. I enjoy watching all of your videos. Looking forward to season 3 and next week! Love u.
Aw that means a lot!! Thank you ☺️
This looked so delicious I had to make this recipe for dinner tonight. Mine turned out devine and I thank you so very much for this video. I am sending you all of the love that I have in my heart.
I haven't commented throughout season 2 but every recipe you have made has been amazing even the Lord Woolton pie despite the amount of liquid preventing the filling thickening.
I just absolutely love your channel and you and your husband!! The both of you are just Darling!! And yes I made the cottage pie and you were so very right!!! It was absolutely Delicious!!!!!!! Thank you so much 😊
Makes me want to make Shepherd's pie this week. I guess that's what's on the menu. Thank you Sage!
So lovely getting to watch another season of Dining Through the Decades. Can't wait to see what else you are going to be putting up on your channel now that the season is done and look forward to--hopefully--another season of Dining!
Thank you so much! 😊
Where I live I can’t get bisto gravy at the grocery store and I’ve never tried it but after watching your dining through the decades series you’ve talked me into trying it and I just ordered some online! I’m excited to try this recipe out! 🖤
Ooooow my goodness!!! You are absolutely right Sweetie - that is heaven!!!
Thank You so much for this amazing recipe and for all episodes of "Dining through the decades"...😊
Lots of love Sweetie 💝💝💝
That looks amazing! And I’m pretty sure I have all the ingredients for this in my house right now! 😍😍😍
To make the bisto gravy we usually boil the water first then gradually add the granules into the water so it doesn’t go lumpy ✨
I just love watching your videos. 😊
Cannot wait for the next season. 🤗😊😊
I'm going to miss this series. I love your videos so much and they leave me hanging to watch the next!
This is a delightful recipe. Dining through the decades is such a wonderful way to start my day. Thank you Sage 🙂
I finally made this cottage pie after visiting an authentic Irish Pub in New England and having this same dish. All I can say Bisto where have you been all my life 😋
I so can not wait for season 3 of dining through the decades it's become a nightly routine to watch the show ur beautiful and amazing
Aww I’m so glad you have enjoyed it!! Xx
am sooo glad i came across your channel...your videos are wonderful...a lot of the recipes you've made are ones i grew up with...my grandparents were depression babies...and they raised me (now in my 40s)...it's so nice to see more people enjoying these types of recipes...i always felt these types of recipes were made with love and care...because of the rationing going on at the time and wanting to take care of their family the best they could. keep up the great work. can't wait for more. :)
Great job as always Sage! I will surely be making this this week! I love cottage/shepherds pie! 😋
Oh my goodness, what a treat this recipe was. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. It is delicious 😋
I tried it for the first time today and it was absolutely delicious 😋🤩🥰👏
This brings back so many memories watching you make this. I forget what my mom called it, but she made the same thing for my brother and me in the early 1980s. Thanks to you, I now have the recipe. Thank you Sage from the states 🇺🇲! Love your channel and thanks for sharing.
Cottage pie and shepherds pie was part of my staple foods growing up in 🇬🇧 (shepherds pie which is lamb mince) x
It looks delicious! Looking forward for the next season of Dining through the decades❤
Classic comfort food! 🤎
Really enjoy these series! You are a joy to watch!! All these dishes sound wonderful!
Oh thank you so much! 😊💕
Thank you for doing these videos, it's nice to see how people made do with what they were allowed during rations, I like seeing the clothes and styles, the fabric is so pretty, you do a good job and you can tell you enjoy this!!!!
Seems to be so good, i have to make it!!! Thank you for all the recipes dear Sage😊
It was the BEST! 😋
I have enjoyed watching thank you love the bloopers
Electric egg beater instead of hand mashing makes INCREDIBLE mashed potatoes! Thanks for posting...can’t wait to make some (vegetarian style!) 😊
Your knife skills are great! Love your cooking show!!! Thanks for sharing the decades 😀
Such a wonderful recipe. I've enjoyed every episode of season 2 and tried most so far. My family enjoyed the break from 18th C cooking I often try.. I'm looking forward to Season 3. So many great lessons about using everything from historical cooking. ❤
I really enjoy watching your video. ❤
This recipe looks so delicious!😊
Hi, this is another excellent video!!! I loved it n I always love seeing your Chickens, garden n those funny bloopers!!! And you are such a good cook !!! So professional !!!
quick tip to keep the chopping board from moving while cutting veg is to lay a damp tea towel under it. Gives it traction :) shouldn't move then x
Sage, next season I'm flying to Australia to be the taste tester. 😋
Hahah yes please do!! 😊💕
I love how much you crack yourself up, and I'm looking forward to season 3too.
But first, I'm looking forward to making this cottage pie when my parents come down this weekend for the first time since June - a perfect celebration dish I reckon
hahaha yes... I do 😂Ohh lovely, I'm sure your family will fall in-love with this cottage pie!! 💕
I love that you call it mince. Here is the US it is referred to as ground beef, or in some parts of the country and how my husband was raised calling it "hamburger meat".
