  • This is an old video from shortly after the embouchure shift demonstrating a very large cornet mouthpiece. It's been a big help in the low range and a good endurance trainer for the high range. I would recommend trying it out, but it won't work for everyone.

I played one of these for 30 years, in the front row of brass bands here in Scotland. Even in championship section! The reason we can cope with these is we do a lot of playing. Its like playing a violin in an orchestra and the rehearsals go on for hours.

    That ending got me shook

I think the "medium bore trombone" analogy can be accurate sometimes (with very strong players pumping a LOT of air through and producing big FF's).
You're right that it's definitely something you find a lot in brass bands - but mostly on back row... I've met one or two that used a 2 on front row but they've generally been OK rather than great players - at championship section level it's almost 100% a back row piece

I'm starting to realize more and more that it's pretty exhausting to play a 2 up high. Ah well, that's what my 3C is for. I don't play high much on cornet anyhow.

In any kind of usable way, yes.
It's easy enough to play high at mid-low volume on one (enough for a solo contest perhaps) but to get the meaty FF's and projection you need in serious bands is far more work than the vast majority have the endurance for.
Knowing your limits with particular kinds of mouthpieces is definitely an important step in becoming a flexible multi-style and multi-instrument player - if you use the right tool for the job, it'll work better for less effort, sounds good to me.

any idea what drill chart number the throat is on this beast

This took a bit of poking around, but according to the Denis Wick sizing chart, the number 2 cornet mouthpiece has a 4.6mm bore, which I assume refers to the throat size. On the drill size chart I was able to find, 4.6mm translates to a 14 or 15, which is absolutely massive compared to the stock 26 or 27 you get on many trumpet and cornet mouthpieces.

I played a 4B for years then tried out a few others - 3B, 2B - but the 2 has given me far and away the best tone and control I've ever had especially in the upper range. But I'm not sure how much stamina I'd need to keep going with it for hours...

Interesting observations! I’m surprised you find better tone in the upper register, although the slots are very firm on deeper mouthpieces so the better control makes sense. I’ve been considering getting a Wick Heritage 2B for a little brighter sound and stamina boost.

@@SamuelPlaysBrass I'm basically going round in circles with a 2, 2b, 3c (heritage) and 4b, trying to choose between them! Playing this evening I think that 2B is better for range from high G upwards, but the 2 just owns everything below that in terms of attack, accuracy and full tone - aside from having a slightly less bright sound (the 4B still tugs at me there though - as there is this breathy sweetness to it that the 2 and 2b don't have). I like the weight of the heritage 3b but not sure I like it overall. So actually I'm thinking same as you, that I want to see what the 2B - and also the - 2 sound like in heritage

E's sooo flat. Play it 12. Maybe you can pull 1 to get a D with 1 but more likely 13.

This was one of the reasons I ended up switching to a Wick 2B and Yamaha 16E. Both were better on the E partial.
