Clarice Blackburn is one of my favorite actresses . She is so underrated and yet she knocks it out of the park every time. If Dark Shadows had been given a larger budget, perhaps she would have appeared more frequently. The scene with Daniel and Abigail is priceless.

Abigail Collins is very superstitious, and vindictive! Boy is that actress good! She makes sure the audience hates her, because she is against Victoria Winters! The witch trials certainly were nothing to be proud of in the United States! I think the writers for Dark Shadows were trying to teach the audiences how absurd and stupid the witch trials were! Well done! ~Janet in Canada

The episodes from late '67 and early '68 in 1795 were among the most amazing yet for the show. The momentum continued throughout 1968 with Nicholas Blair, Cassandra and a lot more, making '68 the peak year of the show (before Quentin) in the dragged-out 1897 story line in 1969. Just because the show was getting higher ratings didn't mean it was at its creative peak. That had already passed.

I remember the Cassandra/Quentin/1897 storylines the most as a 9-10 year old back the the day. It wasn’t until I was in high school that I saw the arrival of Barnabas/1795 segments via reruns on I believe public television maybe?

@@wildforthecats661 That could be, depending on where you were living at the time. The arrival of Barnabas soon brought in the arrival of Julia and the show really took off from that point. Shortly before they went back in time to 1795 (and the show went to color), they'd kind of written themselves into a corner with Barnabas torturing Julia. By going back in time for those few months, it would give them a fresh start (erasing) the other and getting it back on track. If an original watcher, you must have seen enough of the '68 episodes because that (calendar year) was the year Angelique returned in the present as Cassandra. She was later returned to Angelique by Nicholas Blair as punishment (I think) for attempting to kill Adam. Her coffin was in the basement of Blair's house by the sea. So you should try and see them again in the right order, when you get the chance. Do you know if there's a channel on UA-cam or other where you can see them, not just scattered episodes here & there. Please review and advise. Thanks.

You have given me something to think about. I, too, thought that the 1897 storyline dragged. The peak in 1968?

    • @robmcgowan4034
      @robmcgowan4034 2 роки тому

@@darkshadowsfansunite8140 I don't understand the question mark after 1968. I think I explained myself pretty clearly in my comments. After '68 it was the dragged-out 1897 storyline, then the Leviathan, then parallel time when the show was on the way down. I've talked to various stars of DS at conventions in the '90s and 2000's, and it's fairly common knowledge '68 was the show's peak year creatively. Perhaps not yet for ratings, but that's not what we're talking about.

I've said it before Abigail is a vindictive bully. She threatened Ben to have him sent back to prison if he didn't appear as a witness AGAINST Vicki at her trial. Then she gets Trask to try and intimidate Peter out of defending Vicki at her trial.
Her and Barnabas' confrontation was a pleasure to watch. Stubborn to the end, Abigail refuses to believe it was Angelique who was the witch all along. Barnabas shows his fangs to her and she drops dead of heart failure.
On one of the the DS forums I've visited someone actually admired Abigail for sticking to her misguided belief that Vicki was the witch (whereas Trask fell to pieces almost immediately when Barnabas forced him to sign the confession stating Vicki's innocence). I don't find anything admirable about a stubborn, fanatical old woman refusing to admit when she's wrong.
Clarice Blackburn was great as Abigail, making her as contemptable as possible for an overly religious fanatic.
Abigail was as bad as Trask in her fanaticism, but both got their just desserts at the hands of Barnabas.

Both Rev Trask & Abigail's (Clarice Blackburn) personality is always so aggressive & defensive & always keep incriminating against Victoria. ☹ When Abigail went to the Old House basement, she discovered a coffin. Barnabas arises from the coffin, sucked her blood & killed her.

Abigail was correct that a witch was in the house just was wrong who the witch really was. It’s no wonder this was fueled by hype and fears by Abigail encouraged by.trask was the evil force masquerading as a man of god to destroying instead.challenged by Barnabas before and after his own curse being put on himself. Abigail & Trask got the punishment they deserved.

I remember watching this episode originally (at 11) in 1968, one of the best in the series, including the exchange here between Barnabas and Abigail. You pose a good question. I think in her mind she's "a woman of God" therefore making the devil want to "touch" her (not necessarily physically) but spiritually in ways that would be evil, going against God's ways.

@@robmcgowan4034 I know she acts snooty, and judgemental but tv or the movies always makes any character who supposedly loves God to be ridiculous or hateful, even the 'reverend' here and in this case glorifies Barnabas a vampire, even though he's supposed to be unwilling and full of guilt. I like him too but it's always the same thing.

@@marilynwillett804 Thanks Marilyn. You make excellent points. On an unrelated related note, I'm extremely opposed to an kind of attempt to 'revive' this series ever again. The only exception was the 1991 short-lived series with Ben Cross and Barbara Steele. The magic of this show was the novelty of it from that time, the actors, writers, directors, producers of THAT time. The only other exception NOW might be continuing the show via audio CD's with the original stars which they've done for the past 10 years or so. Lara Parker and Jerry Lacy to name two have done some.

@@marilynwillett804 Trask and Abigail are great villains and I enjoy both of them in all their roles on the show. Not all religious people are evil but the loudest ones, even today, are doing more damage than good. There are pastors who are calling for the execution of gay people. The damage that so called "good Christians" has caused terrible suffering to young gay people who are thrown out of the house or sent to barbaric conversion camps. So forgive me and many others if young people are fleeing from organized religion. Jesus never ever speak against gay people

@@robmcgowan4034 I would have to agree about a revival not being the way to go. Those of us who are the real fans and would be interested in the show would find ourselves comparing the actors and the plotlines. I'd rather watch the original cast members (who are still with us) on the Zoom programs that they have done.
