Black Thought was recently on Questlove’s podcast and they talked about the day this was recorded… apparently Tariq couldn’t find parking, so he had his driver double parked out front, he ran inside real quick to punch in and punch out. I believe his car was parked for less than 15 minutes.
I’ve seen similar stories about him showing up to recording studios to do one take and head out in less than 5-10 minutes. He has to be the greatest to ever do it at this point.
Also, I tried watching this with my wife once and she tapped out in 30 seconds… so props to the Mrs for sitting through it.

That freestyle was/is iconic and Black Thought is a next level emcee overall! I grew up in the Bay Area Ca with the likes of Hieroglyphics and Living Legends. To be in the freestyle cypher circles back then was crazy!! Not a lot was documented then, but you knew if someone was truly freestyling when they called out what was happening in the cypher or crowd. Check the Hiero vs. Hobo Junction battle on our local radio station KMEL(The Wake Up Show) before they moved to LA.... Casual is a Rap God(another freestyle he did over Em's Rap God)

The definition of freestyle isn't just off top the head. It also means using old material an emcee never released that he/she wrote at some point and memorized it or a combination of old written material. Either way, the best ever, whether off top of the head or memory.

Great reaction! This is amazing because of how hard hitting and relentless Black Thought did it.
But the best true off-the-top freestyler off all time is named Harry Mack.
During Covid, he released new content every Friday of him going onto the Omegle website, which is basically chat-roullette with complete strangers, and he'd ask them for multiple words or topics. Then he'd create 3-5 minutes of freestyle going deep into each word and adding in elements from their conversations and anything he could see in their background.
15:15 He did 100 Omegle Bars episodes with 3-5 performances per episode.
His whole goal was to bring smiles to people and make positive connections... all while spitting fire and improvising all the way off the top of his brain.
He also does weekly live stream freestyles where he takes words in real time from the chat section and rhymes seemlessly for extended periods.
When he reached 1 million subscribers on UA-cam, he did a 10 hour nonstop live steam freestyle.
His content gave me, and eventually millions of other people something uplifting, inspiring, and mind-blowing to look forward to every week during the pandemic.
Start at episode one. It's phenomenonal, but he was just trying to figure out how to transiting to doing his freestyles online. Trust me when I say that the format and the delivery just kept improving.
Omegle Bars 18 is where he earned the unquestioned loyalty of his fan base, and he took off from there.
Harry Mack is the best off-the-top freestyle rapper of all time. I've done research. He's too kind to battle, but he'd crush anyone in that forum.
