I first heard this song on Thistle and Shamrock with Fionna Ritchie in about 1987 and it's been rattleing around in my head ever since. This version is the closest to what I first encountered and is a real pleasure to hear again.
What a great song.me,iam from Austria and have been a severall times to bonnie scotland, i even have joined Dougie Mc Lean. Caledonia. Kindly regards from 🇦🇹🙋
Absolutely beautiful. Oh, my name is Jock Stewart, I'm a canny gaun lad, And a roving young fellow I've been. Chorus (after each verse): So be easy and free When you're drinkin wi' me. I'm a man you don't meet every day. I'm a piper by trade, I'm a roving young blade, And it's many the tunes I do play. And its oft have I sat with both bottle and friend Is there ae man could e'er ask for more? Inst. Let us catch well the hours and the minutes that fly Let us share them sae weel while we may So come fill up your glass with whisky or wine And whatever the price I will pay
Wonderful, textured music. I have always loved bluegrass and mountain music as well as celtic/scottish/irish folk music. The fusion of these types is deeply satisfying! I can't believe 5 people didn't like this.
Ewan McLennan will be playing at the Victory Hall in the village of Benderloch near Oban Scotland on 25th Nov 2016. If you are in the area see you there.
For those that are watching this in the beginning of February 2014 the transatlantic sessions a series over 6 weeks are on TV in the UK BBC FOUR. This song has just been on.
You're not going like this, but... I prefer by far the rendition sung and played by a group called Rapalje. The guy who sings has real power in his voice, which is lacking here but needed for the song.
You honestly have no idea what ur talking about. Listen to The Pogues version, that’s how this is meant to be sung. And in my opinion this transatlantic session tops the lot
@@maxgilroy1666 oh, I beg to differ. This version of the song is weak, it misses the power behind the sung words. It's watered down, like, say you're pouring yourself a glass of strong whiskey and thin it with water.
@@maxgilroy1666 A busker and friend of mine used to play this song on his bagpipes, that's how I got to know it. Bagpipes are DEFINITELY powerful enough to carry over the spirit of this song! 😂
