Mourners gathered early on Saturday along the route to Althorp Hall to watch the body of Diana, Princess of Wales, return to her family home.
The Spencer family announced on Friday it had shifted Princess Diana's burial site.
Diana was to have been interred in the hamlet of Great Brington at the Church of St. Mary the Virgin, along with 20 generations of her ancestors.
But fearing the village of 200 people would become a shrine overrun by sightseers, Diana will be buried privately on an island in the middle of an ornamental lake in nearby the Spencer family home.
In a last-minute switch, Diana's family announced on Friday that she will be buried on an island in the grounds of the family's stately home.
The island is in the middle of an ornamental lake on the grounds of Althorp Park, which is 60 miles (90 kilometres) northwest of London.
The island - described by some as a fitting and tranquil place for her burial - will be open to the public for some parts of the year.
Paying their last respects, people placed floral tributes outside the gates of the house, adding yet more flowers to the already massive carpet of blooms.
On the eve of the funeral of her daughter, Frances Shand Kydd attended a Requiem Mass at Westminster Cathedral in London.
Every corner of the cathedral was crammed with members of the public, there to pay their final respects to Diana at the memorial requiem.
Frances Shand Kydd sat in the front row with the Duchess of Kent and the Duchess of Norfolk.
The Princess of Wales and her mother had an occasionally stormy relationship, but had put their differences behind them by the time of Diana's death.
Diana's mother was greeted by spontaneous applause as she left the cathedral at the end of the service.
As the Spencer family began preparing to lay Diana to rest, police sealed off the tiny Northamptonshire village of Great Brington.
The police expect that the funeral will draw many mourners to the streets, but is confident that everybody will have the possibility to see the event.
    SOUNDBITE: (English)
"I honestly can not tell you whether it will be ten thousand, a hundred thousand, two hundred thousand. But we hope the numbers that do arrive, and if they do spread out over the complete distance from junction 15A, right up to church Brampton, there must be enough room for everybody to view the ceremony, the cortege as it passes."

Villagers have suffered disruption since Monday's announcement that Diana would be buried in Northamptonshire.
But fears of the village being deluged by (m) millions of visitors are eased by the announcement the Princess will be buried inside the grounds of her family home.
Some believe the village would not have allowed the intrusion by (m) millions of tourists anyway.
    SOUNDBITE: (English)
"I don't think that it will be a great Graceland, but I don't think that the local people will allow it, but obviously it will get busier, people will come."

In the last week the church where Diana originally was planned to be laid to rest has been turned into a shrine.
The church, where 20 generations of the Spencer family, including Diana's father, are buried, is engulfed in flowers and tributes to the Princess.
Business has been booming for the local florist, causing a shortage in the supply.
    SOUNDBITE: (English)
"Monday, we really sold out three times. And as I say, it was mainly roses, 36 boxes of roses you know, it's dreadful."

We ask governments in all countries to unite the bridge pillars as high as one or two meters so that if a car hits a bridge support, it can still slide not as badly as a car crashes into a bridge pillar so that an accident hitting a pillar like what happened to Princess Diana does not happen again, sorry and thank you.
