  • S2E9. Ed and Lorenza ride the 29.2 mile length of the General James A Van Fleet State Trail. There are four trailheads spaced 10 miles apart along this remote trail. If you prefer a very straight trail with no elevation changes and only one gentle curve, this is the trail for you! Oh, and much chance to see wildlife in the real Florida!
GPX files are available on Ride With GPS at these addresses:
northbound from Polk City to Mabel: ridewithgps.co...
southbound return Mabel to Polk City: ridewithgps.co...

Great video, Ed. The Van Fleet is a wonderful place to "get away" for a few hours. Something that I was not aware until recently is that the Van Fleet is part of the Florida State Park system and, because of this, is the only trail that has a ranger that patrols the trail. The phone number in the repair boxes may be how to contact the ranger if someone needs assistance.
As for Sugarloaf Mountain, it's not far from where I live. When you do ride Sugarloaf, be sure to climb it from both directions. Each side has a different "personality".

I did notice the words 'state trail' in the official title but did not understand what that means. Thanks for the information. And good point about Sugarloaf Mountain Road. I will keep it in mind! Thank you for the feedback.

I've seen bobcats, deer, hogs, armadillo, snakes, Florida box turtles, gopher tortoises, several species of snakes, gators, dozens of bird species. A special place.

Great video! I look forward to seeing where you riding next. If ever you want to do the Palatka-Lake Butler Trail I would love to join you as it is a favorite of mine (that doesn’t require an hours drive). I know where the good burger, ice cream, and coffee shops are located! Keep up the good work!

Hi Ed. Just found your channel and I am enjoying all of your videos. I live in Palm Beach county so it certainly is a different world in central florida. I was wondering if you have thought about riding the withlacoochee rail trail and Pinellas rail trail. I would enjoy seeing those videos!!

Hello! Yes, I have thought about riding and recording those trails. At this time, I hesitate to go there because of the travel time by vehicle with traffic. It may happen someday though. Thanks for watching and keep on pedaling!!

I understand. The heat is not pleasant. I have a friend that lives in Crystal River. I am visiting down her in October. I would love to ride then, if something comes up and you guys don't mind me tagging along. Thanks

Do you turn around and ride the trail back to your vehicle, or what do you do?
