Bofuri doesn’t need some anime cliche of being trap in a video game world. It’s just a fun ride of MMO players enjoying a game and abusing the hell out of the game mechanics.

Seriously, I started watching this show ironically, basically going: "yeah lets watch some more isekai game trash" but when I actually watched the first episode I actually legitimately enjoyed it and I've had a blast watching every episode so far after that😊

A vrmmorpg can be considered an isekai, where u literally is inside another world, tho virtual.
Not necessary have to be summoned / reincarnated / trapped in one 🙂
I also appreciate that the other guilds aren’t evil. There is no evil force for the heroes to fight against. Everyone is generally on friendly terms. When Maple came across the guy who ranked #2 in the first event at the cafe my brother said, “oh no” but the dude was so nice to them. All Maple wants to do is have fun and it comes across to the viewer because there is nobody to hate. I love Maple Tree, I love the other guilds, I love the devs, I even feel bad for the weaker players who flee in terror as Maple approaches.
Also, seeing the characters go back to a previous boss was good fun since they figured out all the strategies.

Maple is such a sweet person and is so inoffensive that nobody can resent her success. :) And besides, it's just a game.
What's even better is that the devs feel bad nerfing Maple and so they decided later on that instead of nerfing her they will add skills and items to make it more balanced around her.
They did this because at the end of the day Maple is just having fun playing their game.

The fight sequences are surprisingly well animated and choreographed. You can tell that there is a lot of passion behind this anime. Also Maple is a god of destruction so that's pretty cool. I can't see how anyone could beat her at this point.
They'll need to do what that one South Park episode did in order to defeat the best player in WOW

I've been there aswell spend countless of money just to feel burned out. All I have to say is to enjoy them, like how Maple is doing it.

This is why I love bofuri as well. I don't really get why people are complaining that New World Online ruins their immersion of the anime when the focus of the show is the friends we make online, having fun with them, and the experience your first game can give to you.
The show's main intention was never to immerse you in _NWO._ The show wants to immerse you in _Bofuri._

sorry to say mmo part is pretty much dead, not much mmo in the game nowadays, i missed those 50ppl+ dungeon and so, while nowadays 4-5ppl team dungeon is all they have all below 10ppl
This is my gem of the year. The best part of the show is the chat part where they talk about maple breaks logic.

This show has been a genuine blast from the start and it defo hooked me when Maple started to eat the hydra. It makes me laugh every episode and the characters are all adorable especially Maple her self and I feel in love with her a little when she showed off her new armour and her loving sacrifice skill.
I have never seen any anime that takes as much advantage of the MMO setting as Bofuri. There are things players do in games that they would never do in real life, even if that "real life" is now a reincarnation in a fantasy world. Players don't just want to beat a game. They want to _dominate_ it! This means going out of your way to become really skilled or find the most powerful equipment and abilities. It means putting mechanics together in unconventional, or even ridiculous, combinations. Players are often looking to take control away from the developers by doing the impossible or completely unpredictable; usually both. Maple sequence breaking that quest was one of the most satisfying things I've seen in almost any anime. It seems painfully obvious when the tools are laid out as they were, but completely ludicrous without already knowing about Maple's flying turtle.
The only other shows that I've seen even come close to capturing this side of gaming are SAO Abridged, and GGO with a very distant third. The only other story I know of that does this is actually a video game itself. (Yes, it's a single-player RPG that takes place in a VR MMORPG.)
It's important to note that the inner 4th wall is much, _much,_ more fragile than the outer 4th wall. Breaking the inner 4th wall of a video game can have _spectacular_ results. Something as simple has changing a few numbers in one's stats can turn someone from boringly average to a god among men. If you've ever watched a speedrun with glitches, you can very easily see that one doesn't even need outside modifications to teleport around the world in an instant. And sometimes, it's not even teleporting. I've watched speedruns where the player pulls out a giant death laser just because its firing animation includes a jump which gets used to hop over a fence.
What's the name of the video game you mentioned?
I watched a speedrun where the final boss was beaten by NPC mobs. 😂

Basis: A young girl who is almost clueless about VRMMORPGs accidentally "breaks" the game by innocently min-maxing her character into the most over-powered being in the game.

Bofuri is definitely a breath of fresh air to the whole vmmorpg. Maple is a player whose not a gamer just singlemindedly play game her way while looking like an airhead, displays quite a lot of intelligent and judgement which in the earlier part motivates her to get more skills and abilities.
While a lot of people who read the light novel would complain that the character development is strictly within her guild but I would rather rebuke them since a lot of recurring cast like Pain, Frederica & Mii was given a lot of exposure and development thoughout this simple yet interesting premise.
I love the little scenes of the devs wondering how the hell Maple became so imbalanced and try to adjust the game... only for her to (accidentally) find another exploit. They aren’t an all powerful and malevolent force, they’re just a team that didn’t think a player would do something like this. Remember: users are simultaneously the dumbest and most ingenious people in the world.

I'm a Sally "Stan" for sure! She's just such a bad-ass and she gets the best fights! This show also has spawned some fantastic meme formats. Wooly Maple is so great.

Honestly, Bofuri is just silly dumb fun. I love it. It resembles Log Horizon in some ways, but the stakes are vastly different. But since Maple is kind of a meme, Bofuri is more well known. So If you're reading this, and you like MMO style anime? Give Log Horizon a go. It's fun, there's indepth talks on game mechanics, and it has some amazing story and depth to the characters. It's the action adventure counterpart to Bofuri's slice of life.

Comedy, action, cute lolis (don't judge me), lovable characters and they don't take themselves too serious. I’m so thankful you brought up the flying giant turtle. I never expected her to go that route, but Maple is exactly what I have been waiting for. I needed a video game anime to feel like an actual video game. Bofuri is a hidden gem that I stumbled upon on Hulu watched the first two episodes and was horrified that the entire series isn’t out already. Every week I look forward to her shenanigans because of all the possibilities that could happen. It feels like the more the devs try to rein her in the more she finds to break the game making her a beautiful monster. I’m now wondering if the devs put a limit on base stats as she clearly is still leveling. Where are her extra points going? Watching this show made me rethink how I should play MMO’s.
Super late to respond, but one of maple's earliest skills doubles her vitality, at the cost of slower leveling. In other words she's actually still pretty low level for where she's at. Let that sink in. A lower level player is competing against players that are sometimes much higher level than her, and she's winning. So yeah, she doesn't often get the chance to allocate more points into her vitality. Thats just how broken her skills, buffs, and resistances are.
You don't get how glad I was to see a cliche that is so overused and most of the time boring and generic become a fantastic show about games. Something about some people playing games doesn't sound that impressive at first glance,but unlike most shows,Bofuri took that formula and just add fun into it. There's no stake,real threat,just some gamers trying to be the best like no one ever was. The cast itself also is very fun to see interact,and I'm surprised that wasn't as much fanservice as I usually thought. Maple powers also is really diverse and you can barely see any of them coming. Overall,Bofuri is a show that defies expectations,it's not mind-blowing nor is it generic,it's a fun show that took a formula and run with it. One of the best sho of the season and I'll doubt I'll forget this show ever.
I'm really glad there isn't much of the overused fanservices like sauna baths, beach outings, overly exposing useless bikini armors etc etc.
It makes the show so much enjoyable, without the need to go thru the author's closet fetishes.
The big emphasis of this anime is “abnormal character build”. And it’s working.
Most MMO have cooky cuter builds, if you want to “win” you have to use those. This does defeat the purpose of the open world game genre. Also, having the possibility of making functional odd builds is a big issue for game balance. So, this anime does reflect the problems and limitations of MMORPG development. (Massive Multi-players Online Role Playing Game)
The MC is the ultimate n00b breaking the game by ignoring gamer common sense. But using real world common sense. “2 times 0 damage is still 0, right?” Ability selected.
I wish we could have more sandbox games when it come to character build. I prefer to play a build that I like rather than being forced into a template class.

It's really only the first VRMMO Isekai that I felt was written by an actual gamer/game dev, and yet in writing it more in line with how actual video games can be at launch in the face of atrociously flawed game design in the hands of out of the box thinkers, it ends up being a parody of both Power Fantasy anime and your typical VRMMO Isekai... and the writer goes the extra length to justify some of her feats and how know one else seems able to just copy her build.
Her Total Defense passive? She had to stand taking constant attacks for an hour while neither dealing or taking any damage. She did it because she thought the bunny was cute and wanted to give it encouragement because that's just the way she is. Players initially going after her during the first event? She was out in the open for all to see and seemed an easy target... why did they continue going after her after it became clear she was a lot more dangerous than she first seemed? Because her low agility meant she couldn't get away after the announcement that she and the other top players were worth extra points. They made it a team effort to try to take her down, so they weren't completely being foolhardy in trying to take her down, but her abilities were just too OP.
And then I was absolutely sold on the anime when the next episode included patch notes meant to nerf her specifically after she took a top 3 spot with so little effort.
Bryce Nakagawa Didn’t work as a dev, but was an alpha tester for Airmech, and played WoW from Vanilla to Wrath. From observation and personal experience, I know that a lot gets fixed during development (I literally forced an enemy’s army to march off the map, never to return by abusing the UFO’s abduct skill and dropped them off on “islands” near the map borders among several other bugs like marching my own army off the map to re enter behind the enemy base en masse), but I also know that a few major yet obscure issues can slip between the cracks, particularly with regards to PvP balance. Vanilla Rogues could PvP naked against raid geared players of nearly any other class\spec, TBC rogues considered any Warlock free HK, and then there was the HARP rogue. Then there were the perma hit-immune rogues and druids in raiding, as well as stat rating abuse in lower tiers that had to be hit with a nerf hammer. Wrath had a lot of issues with DK imbalances with their core gameplay in the frost and blood trees. I can’t remember if unholy ever had major balance issues though. There was also the issue of grenade rushing Wintergrasp that took several reworks of the zone’s mechanics to finally fix.
Bofuri did a lot of Justice for video games. Game mechanics that can be broken, social aspects of MMOs, going Scavenger mode to find hidden secrets like items or skills, and even the freedom to interact with elements in the game's world. This is definitely video game inspired story done right.

That's what I thought when I first started watching this anime. I had no idea this would become my favorite show of the entire winter season. It puts a smile on my face and me in a good mood.
Maple reminds me of a true novice gamer who is playing for fun.
I've been playing MMOs for roughly 13 or 14 years now, mainly WoW and I've seen a lot of buggy bossfights, broken skill and/or equipment combinations that made certain classes or specs a real monster that should be fixed asap.. And here I am loving the hell out of Bofuri. It really calls to my memories of playing MMOs for so long. Enjoying a fun ride and there doesn't need to be life or death tension.. it's often enough to have a tough PvP opponent or a really hard and tricky bossfight.
I'm also really enjoying Infinite Dendrogram (the LN, the anime not so much) thanks to the cast of characters. I know why SAO is popular but the game side of things for SAO never really appealed to me except the cool VRMMO thing.
It's basically the same game-breaking experience just in VR making it all the more appealing to break the experience just for the fun of it.
I don't have as much experience with MMOs, so I compare it more to speedrunning. Stuff like sliding backwards after being launched by a bomb, swinging under your horse to replenish stamina, or pulling out a giant laser just to hop over a fence. And then there's the completely pointless actions that are done for no reason other than looking cool, like Break Sliding in Twilight Princess.
Rolling down the dungeon straight to the boss with Poison Capsule and flying Syrup over the dangerous forest for the Benevolent Knight quest chain were moments that definitely called out to my inner wannabe speedrunner. Speedrunning for me is less about completing the game fast, so much as it's taking what a game gives you and taking it the the absolute limit.
Man the Infinite Dendrogram anime had such potential! It's got a good world and premise but it's so action focused and the animation does not match that.
I think you should try Overlord, Yasei no Lass Boss, and Log Horizon, They all have rather nice game systems.

Maple is definitely the cinnamon roll of the quarter, she's such a sweetheart, and I'm so enjoying this show.
The number 1 right thing in Bofuri New world online is the time acceleration. You can spend weeks in game and only spend an hour or two IRL.
You get to play a proper MMO adventure without the need for plots like life and death hostage scenario. Or no logout buttons. Or get Isekai's in a fantasy world with Video game mechanics
This is literally the game everyone wants to play but no one alive now will be able to.
The amazing way how the world works with its mechanics and Maple crazy ways that effect the game in a wider scaled. The comedy of this show is spot on that how most people would freaked out and chatting about how crazy certain players are.
How to make anime interesting
-Other animes: create a strongger boss to fight the MC
-This anime: nerf the MC
This series works so well because it's light and fluffy without the unnecessary drama that a romantic entanglement always seems to necessitate in an anime. There are stakes and, in the moment, they can feel very real, but at the end of each adventure nobody has actually died and everyone can enjoy the journey they went on. It's just so incredibly wholesome, but quirky enough to remain entertaining.
Maple is by far the most wholesome isekai MC I've encountered for a while...
I just hope she does get atleast an appearance on the third season of Isekai Quartet XD

Haha, finally someone explains why this show is so entertaining! It’s very relatable, surprisingly high quality animation and it’s not been written for an audience that expects significant challenges or character development, rather people are watching to see what the next crazy power maple will get. I guess it’s kinda a power fantasy anime as maple is so OP as she is the only one who plays the game like she does, but I guess u don’t see power fantasy, fantasy and slice of life mixed together all that often which is why people seems to want to demand more from the show. In conclusion, really enjoyable and your jus waiting for the next instalment of wholesome OP entertainment.
I really enjoy this show, the characters are funny and charming, the music is nice to just listen to by themselves and the story is just plain fun, there have been several times where I've said 'if this was an actual game I would buy it' that's how much I enjoy this series and I'm hoping that they might make a second season when this one is done, also the dub is good as well

I knew this show was going to be a hit hopefully it can get its Manga and Light Novel licensed here in the west
for me. Bofuri is not a serious anime but still better and enjoyable than any serious anime this season. i don't need to praise it anymore because its already top 1 anime for me this season
I've loved the concept of "characters trapped in a video game world" for a very long time, so every time I see another anime in this genre, I always try to give it a chance. Unfortunately, they usually flub the execution and focus too much on the high stakes, the inexplicably-OP main character, or the romance while totally disregarding everything that could be unique about this subgenre. Log Horizon is the only recent example that wasn't utterly disappointing.
This doesn't really qualify as "trapped in a video game world" since the characters can leave at any time and this really is just a game to them, but I think that ends up being what makes this series worth watching. Instead of a high-stakes life-or-death story, it's a slice-of-life revolving around a video game, which is so refreshing. Then there are the characters, who are all interesting and fairly unique. And they all react in the way that I expect gamers to react. When people see her poison and paralysis skills during the first event, their first reaction is to complain about how utterly broken her build is, and the devs respond by nerfing her. When Sally suggests PvP as a way to gather medals, I kind of expected Maple to outright refuse, but she doesn't, since she knows it's just a game and it's no big deal.
It's slice of life with action and awesome fights and it's just plain fun to watch.
Even the characters that serve as antagonists (even short-lived ones) are still friendly, because they all know it's just a game and they are only trying to have fun.
I watched this anime after seeing the first half of your video and I got addicted into it. I just ended up laughing so hard all over it. Then I finished your video. Yes the part where she rained acid hellfire had me just break down in laughter. This is just amazing. She is a monster, and everyone in-universe knows it. If she was a legit character in a fantasy setting, she'd be seen as some kind of psychopathic monster. Suddenly puffing into a ball of wool and poisoning it? What creature is this!? Hah.
I never understood the appeal of a slice of life anime until this show. Might actually get me to watch more.

I agree, it is hard not to grin my ears off every episode. I simply loved how the story evolved and kept up the pace and development.
I honestly like the approach of a simple "Friends play games" the anime takes. It's refreshing and hilarious, yet believable enough although overreactive.
Bofuri is special in this regard and I love that Maple is a casual gamer (more invested in manga) who breaks the game by accident... multiple times.
Fun fact: Maple's real name, Kaede, literally means "Maple."

It just keeps getting better and better, Yall can say Ishuzoku Reviewers is the best of this season but honestly i think Bofuri is the best this season had to offer
This is literally my go to anime for whenever I just want to smile, laugh, and turn off my brain. It’s just so fun, cute, and makes me happy. I can’t wait for more in the future with a hopeful season 3

I also thought it was hilarious how when Maple went on a quest chain, and ended up breaking it so badly because she was using a unique transportation method that the programmers of the quest chain didn't take into consideration. So suddenly during the so called dreaded "escort mission" turns to a cakewalk, the NPC escortee who would normally be taking quite a lot of damage continues her scripted event without a scratch, things go kind of weird. I thought that was such an amusing and perfect example of an MMO that hadn't been perfected yet remains a fun and challenging system which from very special unique circumstances would break completely with hilarious results.
Something that is really nice is that you can customize your stats to however you want. But you gain abilities by trying things out or by just plain survival. That’s how maple gained her immunities and abilities. You are what you eat. And I doubt the devs actually considered that someone WOULD do something like putting all points into a single stat and expect it to work. Imagine if recoil was a thing? Maple would be dropping fools faster than she already does. She has a creative mindset that I appreciate, exploration, trying anything and everything imaginable. Lost my shield? Imma bite it. Hell the show acknowledges how strong she is by having the devs NERF some of her equipment. The very same equipment she earned by nomming the hydra to death solo. Hell my favorite part is when she gets the angel power-up and changes her appearance accordingly. People previously have been calling her “The demon lord” player because of her op defense and jet black hydra armor. It’s the acknowledgement of her awareness of how people view her and her attempt to change that view.
I started watching Bofuri a month ago. I can't believe i'm loving it more than SAO. The characters, the world, the game. It's just so fun to start a mission o a different level, and unlock an awesome unique skill that most don't have. I'm starting to get into MMO'S because of Bofuri. And i really wish they would make a game similar to this anime, with many possibilities.
So I was browsing memes and saw a clip of where she eats the dragon. I laughed and thought I gotta watch it. Then binged 12 episodes and this videos was the next on auto play. Couldn't not agree more this show is amazing and I loved every second of it.

Ok, but can we talk about the animation here? Those fight scenes are amazing, better than most anime fight scenes Ive seen. And the fact that Maple killed the supposedly unkillable bird that the devs made, and the devs panicking about it is just gold!
And the game devs didnt think that the overpowered skills they put in the game would go to one person! Maple is ridiculously lucky! I mean, the coin for the Devil was hidden in a tree in the forest and she just discovered it by accidentally falling down! And the Angel quest was also hidden in a random alley that she just happened to go in! As was the Machine God quest too! (The quest starts if you actually talk and help the old man and immediately head to the tower, which then makes the fog appear and the player discovering the machine god) WAHAHAHAHAHA THE DEVS DIDNT ACCOUNT FOR THAT AT ALL!
And she also gets that Wooly skill by playing with a sheep creature for an hour? Like, bish? Who does that in an Action based Vr game?

I watched a lot of Iseki series, many of them are basically the same series, but with different names, some good, some overrated. but Bofuri brought about smiles as it helped me remember the times I enjoyed playing MMOs with my friends and how much of a good time I had experimenting with different skills and weapons.
But most of all, it's a different direction from the other video game based anime that we have seen over the years, seeing Maple accidently come up with new combos to break the game, brings about a decent amount of laughter, how people perceive her as a monster because of her accidental discoveries. The admins doing whatever they can to prevent another Maple from coming into existence is always funny, since they have no idea how they can stop her from becoming overpowered in their game, since she stumbles on another method to break their game.
One thing i really like about bofuri is that there is no games that its like bofuri where u also gains skills by killing enemies mobs
thats why other mmo or mmorpg are same thing u start with few skills then u get other skills by lev up like a skill tree but not getting skills by killing a specific enemies mobs
loved it i want season 2. I need more of maple and her friends being adorably redicolous and redicolously adorable at the same time

I imagine that if an AI created and ran an VRMMORPG it would have to do it organically like this New World Online has with developers playing catch-up to make things more balanced.
I enjoy the chat room forum bits as that also brings a smile it makes it feel more real
the thing that kept me in was just how many of the little details FELT like a game. The way things were named, the way quests failed to anticipate you doing things the wrong way, the little things, the devs going through every stage of grief as they realize how badly they screwed up. the fact that the game doesn't expressly cater towards one type of player, but has a little for anyone.
Even maple reminds me of an actual friend of mine in how he accidentally comes up with game breaking things.
it just feels like the people who made this know and love games every bit as much as I do
I don't think the show would have been as successful if it wasn't for the fact that everyone acknowledging Maple's OPness, in the show, and just in general how grounded the show is, like the fact there is a dedicated group in the world who have deemed Maple their Waifu and watch her adventures just like the real life audience does just helps the series so much imho
Can not wait till ep11, the fight between Maple and that fire girl begins. Though I really want to see Maple vs the games #1 player (forget his name).

I thought this would be just edgy SAO stuff first episode. I was pleasantly surprised to find a cute girl moeing herself into becoming basically both the demon lord and heroine. I love each episode and by god the support characters are lovable too!

Never expect to love this anime, it instantly hooked me and seriously this is one of my faves, there was never a boring scene/episode
