Kentucky Yankee, I just want to say thanks for your info , your humor, and your display! I love it, and it helped me out understanding a few things as I understood you! Thanks!
Hello from Republic of Ireland, Yesterday watch your video about starter, Same problem Mercedes Benz W123 ,1983 300d This morning took starter out, don't even bother to take apart, Just wash with WD40 and petrol, believe or not but now starter working like new ;-) Many Thanks for video God bless
You are so right about fixing stuff. Even things not designed to be mended, often can with a bit of imagination. Plus, if the part was going to be thrown out anyway, there is nothing to lose. Great video.
This video was great... the first 2 minutes had me rolling on the floor laughing... that's about how I react when trying to start my old Gehl skid loader! My starter has / had the same problems (especially in cold weather) and I wondered if the ball bearings in that one-way clutch were the culprit... and your video confirmed it. So I took mine apart and found the same trouble. They would only lock up maybe 1 out of 5 or 1 out of 10 times. Freed the ball bearings up with a few squirts of brake cleaner spray. Thanks for the great (and entertaining) video!
Kentucky Yankee I dismantled it yesterday and the larger bearing was seized from not being used for the last ten years ill be getting that bearing working today hopefully
omg i was just as mad.. this happened to me on a fairly new starter today.. you disconnect negative first in case the battery is gassing and that initial spark can blow the battery up.. it doesnt happen now on sealed batteries but my dad had one blow up in his face in the 60s
It happen to my Toyota Innova. I think the solinoid switch is the problem. I replace new and now its okay. May be the problem is weak current holding the solinoid that's why the contact between starter cluctch pinion gear ang the flywheel got disengaging.

Much like myself, I tend to make a point of following all of the safety rules. Example: using gas as an approved solvent, or putting it in a plastic coffee can, that probably won’t dissolve.
Oh, I never intended criticism. Lol☠️ I point it out as recognition. Thats what we all do. Safety, or the need thereof is subjective. Keep up the fine work with these vids.
first minute of video is exactly what happened to me a couple of weeks ago when I went out to start my old Ford e-250 to do some deliveries. Ended up having to rent a damn U-Haul.
I have a 99 f-250 with a 7.3 my starter isn’t engaging it’s just spinning and when it stopped working it made a clanking sound and then it just free spun
@@kentuckyyankee yes sir! When i got the muck, the minnows, and ground round cleaned up, i then lubed it up nice, and stuffed it on in. Then, I pulled it out, two or three more times cleaned it up, got all of that very nice and adequately sourced high quality lubrication out of the Bendix, reinstalled it, cut a shim in half to roll the gear a little closer for proper engagement and voila! A starter that required absolutely no expenditures and not a single re-reinstall after the first three and the second two after that. But fellas, I stuck with it, faught for a sliver of intelligence, and in the end, that $216, one year only application starter, is now operating at high efficiency and productivity. With no customization, no out of pocket utilization nor even some long winded over-complication of an unnecessary and pointless extravagation for the better half, who needs no explanation. Starters, I can now admit, that for an inanimate object, they do do a complicated task, reliably, simply, easily.
I'm having a problem with my new stater not engaging the engine. My battery is probably dead because when I jump started it. The starter free spins. I made sure that the starter was properly installed in the reverse order that I removed the old one. I then tried to jump start it again. The only power I got was from the other vehicle's power. So it's the battery correct? I changed the battery terminal that connects the negative because it was bad. So, My last effort to fix this mess is to install a new battery and hopefully it will work because the starter will not engage the engine. Please help me
I recently installed a new starter. The problem is the starter is free spinning. I've changed the battery terminals and installed a new battery. When I hooked up the new terminals to the battery. The starter is not engaging. What could be the problem.
So the fix was just cleanning all the grease of that gear or whatever it's called? My electric start push Mower won't start because the starter doesn't engage with flywheel.
@@kentuckyyankee I think the starter needs to be replaced. The mower was left outside for at least a season. I took it out trying to crank it, it would just click. I disassembled the starter and inside was rusty and full of water. Gave it a good clean anyways, put it back in and it would spin but the little gear wouldnt not engage the flywheel ( thats when I commented here). I took it back down, cleaned it again hopefully magic would happen but nope, it just clicks and refuses to even spin. So yea, I would need a starter if I want to use electric start. Other than that, it still works fine.
Haven't tore into yet. I've put two starters on the ol girl already. Seems to be Achilles heel of the 80 series ih's. That and they don't start in the cold with out being plugged in. Gonna try to fix it.

Thnx a ton! Just got done with the starter on my ‘03 Powerstroke...started on the first pull! You ever get to Montana...beers are on me!
Thanks for the details of how to take it apart. I wasn’t sure if it was a bad bearing or which turns out to be a snap ring!

Good luck, but keep in mind if parts are worn out it won't work.

@@notoriouselwood9253 I figured it out 😆😆
This exact thing is happening to my refurbished starter I bought online.
I assume maybe the mechanic that installed it put too much grease on it?
Hilarious intro!!
If the means come about, I could use some guidance upgrading my 6.2 diesel to a 3hp high torque mini starter. Ideas?
None 😐
Do you think spraying a degreaser in there without taking it apart wouldve worked?
Great question
When the gloves came off...I felt that in my core.

Thanks man ill try what you did haha. My car acts the same as your tractor
