As a Mexican American I'm always drawn to any natives who strive to keep traditions like this alive. Cheers brotha's & sister's 🤙
why don’t more mexicans speak mexican and not spanish - or are there ppl?
I grew up in Mexico, and I peak two native language and Spanish. Sadly in Mexico when they ear you speak a native language they look down on you but here in the states are find people or “ Mexican American” more appropriately and respectful when they find out that I am native Mexican

@@maoomaooo6100We're Pacific Island folks. And it shows as the deviations aren't too far off.
Not only is the word tattoo not only derived from Polynesia but one of the oldest tattoo kits found in the world was from Tonga .. it’s sad that due to western religion and European influences we lost a lot of our tattoo traditions of our ancestors but I’m so happy to see that there people who are still carrying it on.
2:07 Cook got the word 'Tattoo' from his voyages in Tahiti. Though the word actually originates from the Tongan 'Tātatau' and Sāmoan 'Tatau'.
Lol.. Tattoo-tatau..tatatau??...
In Tagalog its Tatak. It's practiced widely by all Austronesians from Taiwan to Madagascar to Rapa Nui. If you go to Taiwan they have a museum of people having tattoos under the lip similar to Maoris and I think it's the Saaroa tribe.
That is the coolest!

To any people that are of Polynesian/Pacific Island descent in the comments would you consider it rude if someone not of this descent got a Polynesian tattoo even if they understand the meaning and tradition behind it?
Not me.
As a polynesian there are contemporary art designs of tattooing that u can receive but as for the ones u see in the video where they are tattooed from the waiste down I wouldn't consider u ask for that tattoo as it is very sacred to the samoan people unless u are married to a samoan and have very very close ties to the family and also fully understand what comes with it then sure u can receive it but it would be the family of the person ur married too that would have to give u the blessing to receive it but for anything else go right ahead as long as u respect it and the meaning it comes with it then u should be allgood to get ur tattoo👍
So AMAZING! The history...the Culture! 🖤 I love it!
Respect to y’all culture.
Polynesian tattoo's should be kept with in their own people.. no one outside the culture should get it. I get it how other people love and embrace the culture and want to get Polynesian tattoo.. but I just think its should be only identified with Polynesians because it's sacred to us.
"I am Polynesian and that is why no one except "us" are allowed to get it"
How I love these people.

Im Melanesian but I loved Polynesian😁😘
Hey i have a question
Is Polynesian Tattoo can combined with a Blackwork art?
I think it's possible .. but it depends of the person who design yours.. if he's a real strict Polynesian he would maybe say no because the original ones are not mixed with any kind of tattoos but since we are really modern, I think most of them will say yes and .. they will just follow the client depending of what he wants and what kind of story he wants to tell 😏.
And what about people who tattoo Polynesian designs who aren't Polynesian? Is it frowned upon by the community?
in New Zealand we have Pakeha (WHITE) guys who tattoo- Kirituhi it is a Māori style tattoo either made by a non-Māori tattooer, or made for a non-Māori wearer. Kirituhi has mana of it’s own and is a design telling the unique story of the wearer in the visual language of Māori art and design. Kiri means ‘skin’, and tuhi means ‘to write, draw, record, adorn or decorate with painting’.
Kirituhi is not restricted to only Māori people, and it is a way for Māori to share our cultural arts with people from around the world in a respectful manner, and for non-Māori artists to enjoy our beautiful art form as well.
Kirituhi is no lesser an artform than moko, however it is different and I believe these differences must be acknowledged and respected, so that the integrity of our taonga Māori - moko, is maintained around the world.
Depends on the person, I have met some white and/or black people that have been just as interested and well-informed about the culture. So for me, it doesn't really matter where you're from as long as you truly embrace the culture. Also (and this is coming from a white person), I would step away from Pe'a(traditional waist to leg tattoos) if not polynesian, since they have much more meaning than the relatively less traditional arm tatau.
I'm samoan, I frown upon it if you don't know the culture and the respect it brings. Learn the patterns so that way you don't look arrogant when polys ask why you got it and what it means.
Carlos Miguel Canga lol
Joe Hancox explained it beautifully. Maori tattoo is more open to different races. But the face is a no-no. It's nice when you see someone outside the culture embrace an interest and love enough to have it on their skin. As long as they respect it that is.
A lot of New Zealanders have Maori and Scottish blood, they love to show it on their skin with Celtic knots and their Iwi patterns or filled with their Clan tartan.
But for Samoan Pe'a. That can be an off limits similar to Ta Moko.
I’m not poly but I really want to get one at Polynesia. Just only to respect their culture by doing it the right way by getting a tattoo done in their tradition.
Kia Orana use didn't mention all of the cook islands, Tahiti,Rapanui🤔 come on cuzzis🙄I think everyone should watch thecoconut Tv about this topic
New Caledonia? Uh they're Melanesian lol
I didn't know new Caledonia was Polynesian, I know that Fiji is part of Melanesian.
Yep you're right .. New Caledonia is definitely not part of Polynesia but Easter Island also known as Rapa nui is one .. French Polynesia of course and all the little islands like Fidji, Samoa etc...
The one thing that gets me mad is pakeha who wear tataau and moko
" it was my first language " art is the best
I'm Chinese American and I love the spiritual power and the oceanic animals used in these designs. I would love to get a tattoo using the striking method and just tell my story to these guys and see what they would come up with. At the same token, I don't want one because I don't want to offend anyone that has these types of tattoos and far better understands the tradition and culture better than I do. What should I do?!
Andy Au as a Polynesian girl I don’t mind that people show appreciation of our culture. Of course there will be people that will use the “culture appropriation” card but if you really want to get it ,go for it dude 👍
I'm a Filipino/Finnish American and I'll probably make a video of my half-sleeve after it's completely done, it took a solid 6+ months and $1300+. Technically my next appointment is just extra shading and a touch up and it's free so I kind of am done. It ended up being mostly stylized like a Samoan tattoo. As part of the tattoo, I have the sun from the Filipino Flag on my chest (the original eight provinces that fought Spain), but also the sun is symbolic in Polynesian culture. On the shoulder I put a symbol called the Hannunvaakuna for my Finnish background, but generally their culture would've used something like an animal, generally a turtle which has several meanings. There is a lot of shark teeth, arrowheads, waves, etc. in the sleeve, but that was just more of a I-showed-my-artist-what-I-liked-and-he-designed-some-shit-kind-of-thing.
The chest portion (before it was re-done) was actually done by another artist at a different shop. At the time I had no idea it was a Polynesian tattoo beyond asking him to draw something cool with the Filipino sun in it that flowed out in case I wanted to start a sleeve. He ended up quitting after, and I hated how it looked without the sleeve portion, but I wasn't sure if it was right to continue it as a Polynesian and the only Polynesian artist anywhere near me didn't respond when I tried reaching out to him, as well as him being booked for months and months in advance. I looked around and found a local shop owner who had done some Polynesian tattoos before. I went in and asked if it was frowned upon for me to have a Polynesian tattoo and he seemed to think it was really only an issue if you copied another person's work (by the way a Polynesian tattoo is supposed to be personalized and tell your story just as you are asking for). Every couple of weeks after that we would draw up shit, I tried to research the tattoo a little bit to be little less ignorant, but there was always the first (unpaid) hour of the appointment just putting something together and making it work..that is until the last couple of appointments where he finally had designs created beforehand and stenciled it in.
In conclusion..nah jk, but props to you if you actually read this--I guess I'm just sub-consciously training for the bullshit general education classes I'm about to finally start in college.
In the words of Macklemore, "have you read the youtube comments lately?" They don't except outsiders.
You are already at a good start.. asking for advice..
Before a person is tattooed, the master tattooist normally talks prior to anything and can ultimately decide whether to proceed or not, based on his findings in their intention and understanding the significance of getting the traditional tattoo..
I know this is an old comment now but if you ever come back, like Thedon said above me, you are on the right track by asking. As someone of Maori descent I personally love that people from other cultures want to embrace ours. As long as it is done with knowledge and respect. I don't speak for all of my people though nor Polynesian people, some will have no problem at all and some will, you're not going to please everyone so do what you feel is best.
We call it in Fiji...'Veiqia'...back in the old days...only Fijian women allowed to have 'veiqia' in Fiji, not men....we have a myth or a story abt it....Bula vinaka Pasifika!

Tattoo is originally from Fiji. In Fiji we dont use Tattoo as a form of fashion it is use for medication purpose when there is blood clot Fijian women back in the days will use Tattoo to drain the clot blood out this process is called in Fijian "SAMUQAWE" we never use it as symbols but it was after two Fijian Princess of a prominent chief on the northern side of Fiji who sailed to Samoa and got ship wrecked. Later they were saved by the villagers who took them to the Village Chief where a feast was prepared to welcome them, not only did he treated them with a great feast but the Chief gave them his Canoe (Drua in Fijian) for them to sail back to Fiji. In return of the chiefs kind gesture to them they gave the knowledge of Samuqawe or Tattoo to the Chief to acknowledge their hospitality towards them but instead of medication purpose the Chief of that village from Samoa use it as a symbol of chieftainship by his family. This knowledge was later taught through out all Samoa not only in the chiefly house whole but it later fall to the commoners as well which is what it has become of today
Some of you may be wondering what were the two Fijian ladies were doing there in the first place, for your information, they were there to visit their fathers sister who was married into a chiefly family on a neighbouring village of where they were ship wrecked to. The visit was because she was sick and as usual back then pacific islanders would sail to islands for visit or trade it was through this visit hence the begining and introduction of Tattoo to the Samoans because there visit changed course when they got ship wrecked
Hope this would help people know the real and hidden stories behind the lies they have been listening to for years

Hi I have never liked Tattoos at all then I saw these and they are so meaningful and beautiful
I love my culture, proud to be a Uce/Hawaiian... the original tattau came from two Fijian women if I’m correct
No! The 2 women were SAMOAN demi-gods TAEMA and TILAFAIGA. The popular legend is that they swam from Fiji. The other legend that makes more sense is that they swam from FITI (a village named FITIUTA on the big Manu'a island of Ta'u), and brought the tatau (meant for the women) as a gift from the chiefs of Fitiuta. After nearly drowning from trying to catch a giant clam in their swim from Fitiuta, they became disoriented and mistaken the tatau for the women, and stated that it is intended for the men.
ChoccoLot thanks Uce for the real story
All good my Uso- happy to hear people taking pride in our culture!
Tattoo is Fijian in origin not samon they adopted it as samon culture because of 2 Fijian women who are twins.
Wrong, and obviously, you do not know this history. The 2 women were not Fijian. There are different versions of this legend, but all the legends state that the twins, Taema & Tilafaiga, were Samoan..... SAMOAN NAMES.

usually Polynesian tattooists will go through the rundown with you beforehand. Yes certain Polynesian cultures will advise against certain tattoos like the Samoan pe'a or Māori moko. But other than that, there is usually no problem with other styles - sleeve, back et. A tattooist may ask what and why you want a certain tattoo and get to know a bit about your own background. He will incorporate these into a design of Polynesian patterns that tells your own story and explain the meaning behind the patterns he used to tell your story. Good luck
Yeah, anyone can get a Polynesian tattoos, but not everyone can get and wear a "SAMOAN TATAU."
Keep in mind, "SAMOAN TATAU" is not for show, for there is time & place-like customary ceremonies to present & represent one's clan & ancestry, as well as, rank with in the aiga/family...
Now, as Polynesian Tattoos Tribals & Motifs-make sure you do your homework and hopefully, the tattooist can explain the motifs to you, for it is not all triangles, squares, circles, & swirls... These geometrical shapes and designs have meaning🙏🙏🙏
So, do your homework. Seek a Samoan or Tongan tattooist, and be prepared when asked about your ink🙏🙏🙏
