I find Traditional Japanese tattooing is more of an art than a style, because of the amount of rules to it, the undeniable artistry to it, and the beautiful of the art that comes out of it. There is so much meanings to them that they translate and show stories with each one.
What are the standards of art? Unlike Ainu tattoos, it is a culture with a history of about 250 to 300 years. Started to show off among people. ( soruce japanese wiki) And the tattoos featuring character figures are derived from classical Chinese novels(Water Margin). Novel characters are represented by tattoos.
Most all tattoos are in art. If you can look at a photo it's an art or a video game as an art or a painting is an art, you can look at an image that a tattoo artist created and that absolutely is an art
So glad he came to America. State of grace is about an hour from me I'm gonna jump on his waiting list soon. 5 years is so brutal tho although he's well worth the wait. I want some tebori to add to my collection so bad
wow its absolutely incredible how much history has gone into Japanese ink... I love how its blended into all cultures an is still highly respected as more than just tattoos... so so so beautiful... ONE LOVE(:
it is the most beautiful form when it comes to tattoos in my opinion. currently finishing my full back piece tattoo in Japan and to see someone with full Japanese body suit you have to respect the dedication! from client side AND artists side, it is a SACRIFICE.
In a few days, I'm starting a Japanese sleeve. Ever since delving into the world of tattoos, the Japanese style has always captured my attention. Can't wait to finally wear it for myself!
In July I started my horimono. Thank God I found a very cool and nice tattoo artist who I can visit every two weeks for 3 to 5 hours each session. At the time of writing, I got my back motif done, and my left arm has been completed last session. Every motif is colorful. I love me some pretty colors. :-)
@@eugenio5774 I live an hour south of san jose. Even if you're here, he has a 2 year waiting list lmao, so maybe you can sign up now and then come later on.
Make sure you find a specialist for this art if you want it. I have 3 in the entire state I live but just got my work finished, full sleeve hannya with cherry 🌸. Absolutely love traditional Japanese.
Beautiful, badass and inspiring. I recently decided tattoo artistry might be my career as I’ve always been enamored by this art that we wear permanently. Thank you for sharing 🙏
the way the japanese traditional do tattoos, with the tebori, it makes those tattoo pop like crazy, also they don't fade as much over time. I hear they are really painful to get, and some of the ink can cause health problems, but i guess it is worth it if you can endure all of it.
I started getting tattooed way too early punk and hardcore music . I have a lot of homemade tats . But nevertheless, I wish that I would have waited to find the right artist. My back is still virgin so I’m patient now. But definitely all my arms will be eventually black out….great video. Appreciate the art of Tebori ❤❤❤❤❤
In Japan, "Irezumi (tattoo for criminals in the old days)" and "Bunshin, Monmon, Horimono (tattoo as fashion)" are two different things. Both are translated as "tattoo" in English, which causes misunderstanding. Historically, "Horimono" was popular among firefighters, carpenters and express messengers(Occupations that show skin). However, since the 1970s, in order to eradicate gangs that have become rabid, "Horimono" has been discouraged for the general public.
Japanese blows away new school hands down in my opinion. To each their own though. If it looks good, alive and legible I like it. My left sleeve is Japanese, my right sleeve is black & grey with some tribal.
I live a stone's throw from State of Grace where Horitomo tattoos and I'm waiting for the day my broke college student butt has enough money to be tattooed by him...
Japanese culture is something I am so into life style fashion food people etiquette and of course tattoos and something about Japanese culture I feel as tho I am apart of even tho I am a different ethnicity I still feel as tho I am one with it
The few yakuza I've seen seem intense. The lions share of 'yankee' I've met run the gamut. In all cases, every Japanese person I've met that has a tattoo of any kind is less likely to be blindly conformist. So I like them more.
The weird thing about this is.... in Japan this tattoo culture is taboo... while the rest of the world embraces it as a unique art form. Funny how the originators don't fully support this, while the western world embraces it.
Here is my question. I live in Maryland, which surprisingly is not well known for having a lot of good Japanese tattoo artists. So my question is this.. How do I find a good one? NYC? Or should I literally just save up and fly to Japan to make this happen?
Thank you, this was very informative! The ways in which Japanese tattoos and (tattooing) differ from ones I know are so exquisite. This is something I would love to do. I would REALLY love to get permission and be selected to have a hand-tapped full sleeve. That's a dream of mine. The only problem is that I do not know if it would be appropriate for me to get a traditional Japanese tattoo, because I'm not Japanese. I don't know if that would dishonor the culture and the art of tattooing. I guess if they select me as someone to do a hand-tapped traditional sleeve then it is not.
One of the Maori traditions is getting tattoos. It is interesting to know that in ancient Iran, heroes and young athletes did tattoos like the Maori people, which I have explained in the book Discovery of Australia by Iranians and shown ten photos.

Well to be fair, Japanese tattoos are literally the art and history of Japan pulled from the old books onto skin and are strictly based off lore and culture. Demons are a very large part of the history and the art, and you cannot change it. Hence why Japanese style tattoos have very strict pairings, such as what flowers can go with what fish or dragons.
I got 51 tattoos I've been getting tattooed since 06. Since 2018 I've been getting a tattoo one tattoo if not more a month for 4 years. I haven't even missed a session in 4 years. Now a lot of tattoo artists tell me that in their opinion cuz I see a lot of tattoo artist when I get tattooed and their opinion tattoos have originated in Japan. And then the Americans going to Japan gets tattooed in Japan. After the movement in Japan a lot of shops opened and follow suit with the shops that originated in Japan. Tattooing is a big deal it's been going on for probably since the first of mankind. My grandpa was born 1928 when he was 17 and 45 he got a tattoo only one though. I could never just get one tattoo. These professional tattoo artists like me they say I'm a good person so they only charge me $100 for a tattoo. 300 $400 tattoo it only cost me $100. A figure if I go to them more and they're making less they rather have me as a customer. That's why I got so many tattoos

American Traditional will never go out of style too.
