  • It's crazy how fast everything can change. When it started, we thought it was just yet another far away fire that would likely just die out. Minutes later it had grown, and out of nowhere the first large soot and ember flashes came our way. We got out with ourselves and our pets and not much more. I'm glad we're safe and sound, and we'll rebuild.

I came across your thread "Grover Build" on jeep garage and I was watching all your videos and then they just stopped. Sometime in 2021 as far as I could tell. I immediately thought "shit, covid got him." So I started searching youtube and found this, I'm glad you made it out. Hope you're doing well. I had stopped my overland build on my f150 around the same time due to lockdowns and loss of job, and then never got back to it. We just sold the truck this week and bought a WK2 summit. Hoping to get back into some light exploring and camping.

Thanks for checking in, we're doing better these days as we've been able to rebuild and start refiguring out what normal is. I picked up a Rubicon 4xe and we'll see if I start turning that into something for camping again or not. The WK2 summit is a fun vehicle.

Hello Cousin. Malia has been updating us on what you’ve been going through. She sent me these videos today. I am so relieved to know you and your girlfriend and pets are safe. It was so surreal to watch the videos. I’m used to seeing this on the news, and it’s heartbreaking every time, but to know this was through the eyes and experience of family really hit home. So, so relieved you’re all safe. The whole family is sending our love, Makia. ❤️ Thank you for keeping us updated.

Hi Cousin, thank you and everyone. It's definitely surreal attempting to make sense of things currently, but we're doing our best to redefine normal and look for the positive where we can. Being safe and warm is important, the rest we will take care of as time goes on. The video and how quickly everything happened puts a weird spin on just fast your life can change.

Terrifying how fast this progressed, glad you and the family got out safely

Watching the timeline is crazy. About the time that the outdoor cam caught sparks coming around the side of the fence the network likely went offline and I was still upstairs trying to get Taco into a kennel.

Hey, I never met you but I own the silver Tacoma on the corner of Blackfoot and Cherokee. Sorry if I ever kept y'all awake, we used the garage as our at-home shop to work on my truck and everyone else's in my little crew of overlanders. Incredible video, I couldn't explain what I drove through to people, had to throw on my yellows to even see in front of me through the smoke. Glad you got out safe. We evacuated in about 90 seconds around 12:10ish

Funny that you were basically just around the corner. I was working on my Jeep or various other vehicles at my house likely upsetting the neighbors near me as well (I mostly have worked on motorcycles but also overlanding setups in the past). I'm glad you all made it out safe, unsure what the next steps will be but we'll see what happens.

This is the most definitive video on how fast the fire come up.
Love the time stamps. 1146 barely smoke. 1208 black skies.

Thank you, it was one of those things where you look back at what we recorded and it just seems surreal.

Thank you, and yes. It was just so crazy to see afterwards how fast things really did happen.

I know that no-one from Superior or Louisville thought this could happen to them (I know my wife and I talked about fire risk after the 2020 fires and felt that we were safe in Louisville) but now in hindsight, the time you spent videoing could have been spent grabbing belongings. Now I probably would have done the same (I've videoed fire before) so I don't blame you. Again, you didn't know. Just glad you got out safe with your pets. So many pets didn't. 😢

You're definitely correct, if I could go back I'd have used the time so differently. At the beginning we didn't really expect much, we've seen smoke out that direction hundreds of time, the issue this time was that things changed so quickly. We stopped filming when things took a turn, and then lost more time trying to get Taco (the black and white cat) into a kennel as he fought free and ran to hide under the bed (that happened at the time when on the external camera you see the fire come around the fence). I'm happy to have the animals and my people alive and well after.

@@UnknownOverLand I can’t imagine how you’re doing right now. I moved away from Louisville last summer (our old house survived, but our first house, from 10 years ago, burned, and even from a 1,000 miles away I’m in shock). I used to cycle past the Sagamore subdivision weekly. It was a nice modest community. So sorry for your loss.

Thank you so much, I'm sure we'll figure out how to rebuild it all when that can be an option.

Yes, you're right. Especially fighting with the scared cats while attempting to get out, it was sheer luck we got on the road when we did.

@@UnknownOverLand I had to evacuate in Superior as well with cats - the blood is still on the cat carriers! Luckily our house made it.

I know it's not, but the video appears sped up. Unbelievable. Used to bike, play hockey and golf in this area.

With the winds and everything it was such a strange day timing wise. Everything seemed so far away and normal and in the matter of minutes there was fire on the back porch.

Hi nextdoor neighbor! This is Jonathan. Thanks for sharing this incredible footage! I know this came at the expense of packing up your possessions, but I believe this footage is unique and may have scientific value, especially the scene showing the rapid rotation. Would it be possible to share the full video that you recorded? I'd like to share this with the meteorological community if that is okay with you.

    • @UnknownOverLand
      @UnknownOverLand  2 роки тому

As you know so well, everything happened so fast in those last moments that really all we had time left was to grab the animals and get into the car. Ping me and let me know what footage you’d like (some of these clips are a little longer) and I’ll be more than happy to get you the originals to send along.
