I followed this guide, ordered that new cassette, installed it… WOW I can actually pedal into the top gear now! My Expand 5 feels like a real bike now, instead of some under geared kiddy cycle 🎉
I love my Rad Expand 5 and was frustrated with the ghost pedaling at higher speeds. Looks like this minor fix will solve that problem! Thank you for the clear, concise, easy to follow instructions!
Thanks so much for this video! (And the other related videos about removing the wheel/adjusting the brakes). With your instruction, it was so easy to fix one of my frustrations with the Rad Expand5...ghost pedaling. I've only ridden a bit after making this change but it feels like all the gears are useful now, as opposed to only 6 and 7 previously. And I get more purchase in gear 7, for sure! I took my bike out of the stand and put it on the ground to help get the wheel firmly seated before tightening everything down - felt like it was impossible to do it while in the stand.
Thanks for this video! My wife has been complaining about "ghost pedaling" on her RadExpand. I'm going to order this oart and see if thathelps improve things.
Thank you for this great video. I was able to replace a tube under my tannus armor and replace the cassette in about an hour and 10 minutes. I found the original cassette was really well attached but was able to gain more leverage with a Parktool chain whips wrench end. super informative and well done. Thanks again.
Thanks for the share! I definitely will do these upgrades to get some more speed out of my RadExpand 5. I would really like it to go 35mph. Post more if you figure something out.
I will let you know 👍. This gives you a few extra mph. It helps quite a bit. Keep in mind, these motors are not designed to go 35. They would burn out quickly
Is the spacing between the bears the same as the original freewheel ? I made the switch but found that I have increasing difficulty changing from the 11 tooth high gear to lower gears. I can make 3 changes and no more? 5:33 . 5:33
Hi Chris. Thanks for this video it really helped. Did you have a video that showed how to fit an adjustable stem riser to the handlebars of the Expand 5? I thought you did but I can't find it now.
Sorry to be a pain it seems that to have a freewheel set up I also need the new screen which doesn’t come with the Radexpand5 so I need to order a new screen with the freewheel is that correct it seems the bike starts to get more expensive than what I’ve paid
Yeah, no PAS 5, I'm out riding it now. On pas 4 you can cruise around 22-23mph, which is perfect for me. You really need to pedal a bit to keep it at 25.
@@PedalWithPower Glad to know. Thanks again for your videos. That extra 5 or so mph is plenty for me. Because I always imagine what happens if I crash at that speed. Also, can you send the link again on where to order the freewheel/cassette?
Hi I’m still waiting for my Radxpand5 due shortly i hope . I have just watched your video on the freewheel does that mean the bike iv ordered isn’t very good on hills I’m not sure why I would need a free wheel but if I decided to purchase one how much do it cost thanks for your video I will do exactly as you say cheers
Enjoy your videos on the Rad expand 5 it gives me more encouragement to getting the bike. My question in regards to the freewheel upgrade. Did you have to adjust the rear derailleur? Coming from a road bike and mountain bike experience I know when I had to change out my Cassette I needed to do little adjustments to get it to shift smoothly. Again thanks for the videos and I'm actually going to test ride the bike next week at the rad power store front in the area.
Your videos gave me the courage to change out my freewheel despite the « dreaded rear wheel » 😅. In re-installing the wheel I broke off the alignment bolt, just above the axle bolt (brake side). Is it crucial for the safety (keeping the rear wheel in place) or does it mainly serve to align the wheel while re-installing? Thank you 🙏
Hello, i installed new freewheel 11/28 instead 14/28 (my e bike is 20" wheel) but still on top assistance there is "ghost" pedaling effect, my front sprocket is 48 teeth, do you think that upgrade to 50 or 52 teeth will be better? BR
Can confirm. I'm 5'10", and I bought a RadExpand for my wife who is 5' 8". It was a little too small for her to get a full extension, and way to small for me. Just bought a 450mm seat post though, which is a cheap and easy fix for that problem.
Drift Maniac Freewheels are trash, the teeth are uneven out of the box. Get yourself a DNP Freewheel, it comes with even teeth lol the only downside can be the bearing that will prematurely wear out(light grind noise) after 6 months everyday riding(better to replace bearings than to have teeth skip from the start) if you want the 11-34 it's the ST1781 or if you want 11-28 it's the ST1780 Thank me later😉
It just allows you to keep pedaling at higher speeds. Helping the motor out by supplying more of your own power. With the stock freewheel, I was topping out at about 21mph, spinning really fast, now I can pedal up to 25 and still engage the gear. It's not a must upgrade, just an improvement
It would've been nice to see the difference in pedal speed. Most common complaint on the Exp5 is it runs out of gear or hamster pedaling. 6&7 are the only usable gears. It was really engineered wrong for a 7 speed derailer. This freewheel upgrade is a big help I've heard but not the cat's meow.
Here is a link to my video showing how to remove the rear wheel and re-install it --- ua-cam.com/video/r2oFP3yMJT8/v-deo.html

Great job I just install the new gearing you provided the link to. Took me only 20 min to install on two bikes. The new gearing is perfect. Thank You!

You gotta build a mid drive for those speeds
Brand, size, link for freewheel? Sorry don't see it

Hi Chris. Thanks for this video it really helped.
Did you have a video that showed how to fit an adjustable stem riser to the handlebars of the Expand 5?
I thought you did but I can't find it now.
Hi, thanks for your videos. I couldn't see your knees pumping. Did you find better resistance at top speed without spinning out?
What is the maximum speed you hit after the change?
Sorry to be a pain it seems that to have a freewheel set up I also need the new screen which doesn’t come with the Radexpand5 so I need to order a new screen with the freewheel is that correct it seems the bike starts to get more expensive than what I’ve paid
Drift maniac have a 7 speed freewheel 11-34T 7 spd Epoch E bike sprocket...Is this the identical sprocket as in the video
Nice! Glad you still have the option to add a few MPH. After adding the display, do you still only have four PAS levels?
Yeah, no PAS 5, I'm out riding it now. On pas 4 you can cruise around 22-23mph, which is perfect for me. You really need to pedal a bit to keep it at 25.

I'm assuming the same chain can be used after swapping out the free wheel. Is this correct?
You are correct. We're only going from a 32 tooth low gear to a 34. I still have the same chain on and it has been working great 👍
Thanks for your video I'm in Europe with Expand 5 250w to upgrade my freewheel to 11 ,34 I need a park tool F 1 tool am I correct thinking that cheers
Hi was the park tool F1 the right rool

How could I slow down the throttle response on take off. Is there a adjustment in the rad Expand 5 controller? Thank you for your help.
Unfortunately, there's no throttle adjust

It just helps align the wheel. If your axle bolt is tight your wheel will stay in.
@@PedalWithPower thank you! Do you have a "buy me a coffee" option? I owe you! thank you for all you do!

Considering a 5expand. Their website has up to 5’10”. Is it too small for someone over 6’?
It's a little small. I had to put a longer seatpost and stem on it.

How's the freewheel hold up over time?

But wait hub motor don't rely on the gear casset ? So u just over powering it via human power ?

Not sure why you need a lower low. Why not just replace the front sprocket?
Don't need low anymore with electric. Need higher high with 20" wheels.
