I clean any new cylinder and piston in my ultra sonic cleaner with just Dawn and water. You will be surprised how much crap comes off a brand new cylinder and piston. I then rinse them off with water in the kitchen sink and dry them in a 200 degree oven for a few minutes. Maybe it is overkill but they are clean when I install them.
Hi, I'm going to build one of these ms660, and do my tune and port just to see how good it can run, I really enjoy your vids ,I use a pencil dermal on porting for me just easier for me too handle, like to see one that you port and polish, its-12 outside here today lol
Found your videos today and ordered a 660 kit to build and compare against my oem 066 and i ordered an 044 to build and test against my bosses saws..... should be fun My real Stihl isn't fresh as a daisy so it may be getting big bored soon
Might be a cheap tool to try out some port timing and transfer ideas I have for my MS661c magnum.. You might want to run that extra Dog that mounts to the front of the clutch cover on MS 440 AND 660 Stihl saws if the clone has the same setup as that's where the chain catcher mounts on genuine Stihl saws.... Would not like to see a thrown busted chain without the catcher to help stop it from taking your hand off 🤔
No I really don't...:) They do come with that dual dog set up...but I have been going for lighter weight on those things. And with some of the light bars along with other bits and pieces taken off or modified, a couple of mine are pretty nice saws to live with.
That mildly modded sounds pretty good.. I listen to the saw in the wood. Does it search all over the place or run at a constant rpm ( what I want). The second saw you ran needs a touch more gas because it is searching all over the place.
afleetcommand my 038 mag has a ground wire attached to one of the cylinder bolts with a ring connector. I recently replaced the top end and am wondering how to torque that one bolt. The ring connector keeps wanting to turn with the bolt. Thanks
Any more update videos coming? I'm waiting for my Huztl big bore parts and carb for my ms660 build. It will be getting a muffler mod with a custom pipe exit to blow the exhaust away from my while chainsaw milling. This saw will be living most of its life in a chainsaw mill.
+afleetcommand I'm hoping to have a video of it running when I get it running. I have a good test waiting for it. I have 2 10 foot cherry logs a day 2 10ft birch logs. one cherry is 18 inches and the other is 21 inches.
PS... Those Amsoil builders lube covered kits I let soak in the lube have a really cool finish... The metal absorbed the lube and then it was I'm assuming honed by the rings. Getting some spine injections Monday and I'm hoping that cuts out the shaking hands... My videos are friggin scary... LMAO!!!! 😀✔️✔️
are you sure about base gasket ridge up ? I heard on another yt vid it goes down, I dont think it would matter. thanks for all the info much appreciated
Been hanging cabinets this week I had to come to get sum chain fix!!! Lucked into an 024AV with new 16 Stihl bar and two chains and the old "made in West Germany bar and good chain too!!! I'm gonna clean the old bar up to hang it up! LOL. It's mint and I got about 160psi on the gauge... My cheap compression gauge needs sum JB Weld around the seal down by the screw threads that attach to the multi size plug adapters ... Harbor Freight... I still looking for those two other spark plug holes so I keep saving the adapters? Do other countries have different plugs??? My saws - weedwackers and pickup are all the same??? So what's up with that? I'm gonna clean this guy up nice... Or buy a Hutzl muffler... Drill sum holes and run the balls off it! ! I just did a bit of tuning... I bought your tach (and love it). After a quick tune it was running great. I really stayed off it because the fellow runs that caned 94 octane 50:1 mix ... And I know everybody and their brother talks it up but I like my 40:1 and I know a guy that is an old dirt biker too that runs his 32:1!!! 😀👍👍👍
My opinion really hasn't changed on them, right person with the right expectations they are awesome. I do think the "Big Blue" g660 is even better for most. Instant gratification and a place to start where the need to build up cases isn't there. Conversely a person with limited skills and less patience or a busy pro needs to avoid these.
Dear Sir: Just did some investigation on the ebay Huztl store. looked at assembled case and cyl. for a MS 290--029 and found some disparaging information. it seems that the same assembly for a MS 660--066 is an incredible bargain! Huztl has 2 versions of the MS 290--029, 46mm is $185.89, 49mm is $165.89. Price for the MS 660--066 is $169.39 (shipping included in these quotes). Shipping charge for MS 660--066 is less than for MS 290--029. Have you experienced such dichotomies in purchases from this supplier?
+jim wright Haven't really looked... But I do know the 660's are pretty inexpensive for what they are. And really they have product offerings for a price like any other company...its their cost plus. If the MS290's are more expensive, it is what it is. Since they are about parts, they aren't as concerned about "escalating" price points for saw sizes. We benefit. :)
That 660 sounded pretty good to me and seem to cut real well. You are not going to get full power out of it until you get 15 to 20 tanks of gas through it. That is a fact of life.
Hi i did notice a bit of "tinny " rattle on the MM saw that i did not hear on the "as is " saw .Would that be attributed to the muffler mod. ? as i only heard it at idle or just off idle ,when not in the wood. Noticeably different exhaust notes. love the videos very interested to see what you find with the carb. on the as-is saw.
+Damon Hart Yea that is the interference between the plastic on the pull start and flywheel.. :) Easier to let it find its own clearance I think. (Hope I mentioned that in the video..think I did)
I've got to stop watching your videos or I'm going to end up with 3 or 4 of these saws. My other project saws(pawn shop used saws mostly) have stopped breaking down and are running a little too well so I might just have to get rid of them and step up to kit built projects. I do have one question though, has anyone you know tried the 25' rolls of chain hutzl sells ? If I'm going to thoroughly test these kits I've got a feeling I'll want to put together some chains to save a little money and not wear out my go-to Oregon chains but I don't want to have a pile of useless links or potentially dangerous chains if they're not up to snuff. As always great video, keep doing what you're doing.
I haven't. I've pretty much stuck to the LGX for reasons from I have a good source for them to wanting to keep that part of the system consistent from saw to saw in order to isolate variables. The thing is chain is source of like ice skates to a hockey player. If that edge isn't just right it can ruin the whole experience. Bob has proven you can "file" a sub par chain to usefulness but I don't have the time or desire...:)
I've done some digging and found a few gentlemen on arboristsite and UA-cam who have been testing out the farmertec(holzfforma?) bar and chain without complaint as they're dirt cheap and fairly durable. I'm thinking I'll pony up the cash for Oregon chain and a few farmertec bars. So that I have a bar with farmertec on it for giggles and still have chain I trust. When I've put the bars through their paces I'll post another comment ,if you're still doing hutzl builds at that point, in case you've got any friends that may want a cheap long bar or backup bars cheap etc.
All true, but the feel and how a chain performs is a very critical part of the saw experience for me. Oregon LGX for me. Light weight bars with a hard material for long life also is my preference. It isn't as much about the cost.
Dennis Muir I have a huztl 372 with a 24" farmertec bar and chain and I can say the bars are good quality hard metal not like some cheap bars that seem to be made of cheese, the chains are good quality but they don't come from the factory razor sharp so a few strokes of a file or a quick go on my chainsaw grinder and they cut great I was cutting 28" ash the other day and that was with a factory sharpen it was ok but if you touch the new chains up they are good and hold an edge.
You got me wanting to build one of these now. Not a bad deal from huztl for less than 300 shipped. I appreciate all the information you share.
Great videos sir!!
Now that was impressive. 👍👍
Great work bud. Real interested in your findings. Looking forward to the 372xp video.
Lube your carbide grinding bits and files with wd-40 or something similar. Brush the chips off and re-lube if it builds up or when you're done.
Mate that was beautiful Nice.😆 old video 😆😆

You have a great channel, Steve Rob talked about your channel, so I came on over, lol great video.
Great video! thanks
Found your videos today and ordered a 660 kit to build and compare against my oem 066 and i ordered an 044 to build and test against my bosses saws..... should be fun
My real Stihl isn't fresh as a daisy so it may be getting big bored soon
Of the AM top ends, I would rather use the Cross Performance 54mm over the current group of BB's..:)
Might be a cheap tool to try out some port timing and transfer ideas I have for my MS661c magnum..

What's the cheaper deal? Build yourself? Of buy one of these things pre-assembled?
buy it pre assembled
Did you go back and remove one of the cylinder screws after torquing to put the ground wire on it?
?
afleetcommand my 038 mag has a ground wire attached to one of the cylinder bolts with a ring connector. I recently replaced the top end and am wondering how to torque that one bolt. The ring connector keeps wanting to turn with the bolt. Thanks
Well now I need to build one of these dang saws. Nope... TWO of these dang saws!
Any more update videos coming? I'm waiting for my Huztl big bore parts and carb for my ms660 build. It will be getting a muffler mod with a custom pipe exit to blow the exhaust away from my while chainsaw milling. This saw will be living most of its life in a chainsaw mill.
+Kenneth Judd yup...and I am really interested in your experience milling with one.. I have 4 our with folks. All are doing fine. Almost scary.
+afleetcommand I'm hoping to have a video of it running when I get it running. I have a good test waiting for it. I have 2 10 foot cherry logs a day 2 10ft birch logs. one cherry is 18 inches and the other is 21 inches.
Just one where I'm using the crank jack to squeeze together one...hen doing a series of Husqvarna based "Dead Saw Salvage" vids.

+David Thorne Hope all goes well!! Please give an update when your done..
are you sure about base gasket ridge up ? I heard on another yt vid it goes down, I dont think it would matter. thanks for all the info much appreciated
I have done it both ways...successfully. Honestly don't remember where I "settled" on those
Goes down, for sure. Just finished a box saw MS460 build and longtime Stihl dealer/saw mechanic advised me through some of those little questions.
just put my ms 660 clone into wood today, desert mesquite, and I'm really happy with it.
take a look at my video and let me know what you think.

+David Thorne Still 32:1 after all these years..:)
You talked about breaking the edges around the ports, do you think that could cause the plating to peel?
+Edward Burnett No peeling, Just sharper than I like.
saw you channel reviewed over on Steve rob's channel...nice mod cool video
+RICKAFIX Thank you
What do need to do for Break in with a new cylinder and pistion? Thanks John
Just run it.
i would run it with more 2 stroke oil in the mix for a few runs less chance of seizing
Where do you recommend buying these kits now in 2019? Great videos.
My opinion really hasn't changed on them, right person with the right expectations they are awesome. I do think the "Big Blue" g660 is even better for most. Instant gratification and a place to start where the need to build up cases isn't there. Conversely a person with limited skills and less patience or a busy pro needs to avoid these.
get rid of that Japanese junk sugihara, and get a high quality Chinese bar to match your cylinder. 50 dollar top end needs a 5 dollar bar.
Thought with the money saved he was gunna buy a vice
does it hurt to do a miffler mod on a home owner saw lime a 460 rancher
No

then it will never have full power. It aint gonna last 10 tanks. Farmertec/hutzl hmmmm, no tank ya
