This is the start of a new project covering the Donkey Kong franchise, finally getting to my favorite video game series. Stay tuned for an update video I'm be making soon where I talk more about this, what's next for Paper Mario on my channel, and my current road map.
@@ParaplegicKeanuReevesThe stuff that 90’s and early 2000’s kids television got a way with. To be fair, we would never get the more mature stuff in writing if we didn’t get the not so subtle adult stuff.
Oh man, the title and length of the video made me think it was a stream, so I was so excited to realize it was a full 3-hour analysis video. Very well done! Totally looking forward to as much Donkey Kong as you're willing to do, even if we're already past my favorite one.
Thanks! Trying to vary up my titles and thumbnails to see if it helps with the algorithm. I did stream the game and the sequels a couple years ago. They're still public if you're interested.
@TheRedGuy I see that the stream of the first game is almost the exact same length as this video, so now I feel extra justified. Thanks for letting me know, though! I might just check them out.
This is crazy. I've been replaying this game all week over and over. Trying to beat it as fast as i can. The orignal DKC trilogy are my comfort games lmao. They are so underrated. Whenever people ask me "whats your favorite game" i always say Donkey Kong Country, and i get a confused look, then thyell hit me with the "donkey kong? Like from Mario". These are the best platformsrs of all time. We NEED a new DKC game.
I will honestly remember Fear Factory not JUST for it being amazing song, but also for the fact its remix was played in one stage of a Mario flash fan game
the final boss could actually be a nod to one of Rare's previous works; "Pirates!" for the NES. if you search up the full OST on youtube you can even hear an early rednition of gangplank galleon composed by the same David Wise (Track 11, or 21 if you use the full ost video, or "title" or "menu" theme on the 8bit stereo video.
Fantastic and very thorough and comprehensive video documentary. I especially appreciate the attention you gave to the Game Boy ports/adaptations. I grew up with Donkey Kong Country as a kid back when it was new and it was definitely amongst my favorite games for the system, though I have to admit that that I still prefer the tone, theme and atmosphere of DKC2 as well as it's gameplay and controls. It just felt like it expanded on all the great parts of the first game while trimming the fat and improved what worked. One thing I felt both games had a tendency to tail at was signaling and hinting where secrets are located. In DKC1 especially, I often felt like I would need to locate a barrel and just push against every unassuming and assuming walk in hope that it would randomly reveal a secret. I know people doesn't really hold the 3rd DKC in as high a regard as the first two but but secret hunting was so much more enjoyable as you felt the game would reward a keen eye and bring observant of little details that was out of place. Most of the time, exploring would pay off without relying on blond luck or leaps of faiths.
Was on a DKC nostalgia trip and I'm very glad to have found this video. Leaving a comment for the algorithm, this should have way more views considering it's so in-depth!
I was 8 years old when DKC came out, and I have very fond memories of playing the DKC trilogy. The music, characters, levels, challenges, secrets, and other things are perfect.
I think DK being the ruler of DK Isle is more so just a family thing. Cranky used to be the ruler before DK came into the picture, and DK might’ve inherited that role once Cranky retired. This is speculation, and I am sorta going off the Mario Movie, where the Kongs made an appearance. It’s explicitly shown there that Cranky is the ruler of the Kongs, with DK being his second in command. It did make a mistake in saying DK is Cranky’s son and not his grandson, but the general idea is solid. If you ask me, it kinda seems like DK’s role as ruler might’ve gotten to his head a little bit, despite technically doing nothing to earn that title aside from being Cranky’s descendant.
I am still stubborn enough to argue that DK should be considered an adult DK Jr, making him Cranky’s son anyway. It doesn’t make sense for him to be the grandson and DK Jr to just be gone
Hey! I just 101% the game for the first time because of your video and Cranky actually has dialogue for it, I believe you said the game didn’t have any dialogue for it. It’s something like “Donkey my boy you beat the Kremlins and found absolutely everything! You’re nearly as good as I used to be!” This is after Cranky’s speech for beating the game.
Bought the DK SNES bundle in December of that year. The whole thing came in a DK crate. Mum made me do the rest of the shopping (food, clothes) for the rest of the afternoon with her. All whilst I had the console and game in my hands. 30 years later I still remember that being the Longest Afternoon Ever.
Happy Belated Birthday 🎉! Please don't be afraid as you still have plenty of time to do what you want! I'm 33 and have realized that your 30s is when you really start to find yourself!
Thank you so much for this video. I LOVE deep dives on donkey kong country games. It’s also my favourite game franchise of all time. I really appreciate all the work that went into this. I of course watched the whole thing. Have you ever watched DKVines let’s play of dkc? I loved it cuz while he’s playing the game he goes into all his theories that he’s pondered over the years. He pointed out that the area that the orangutan gang level is on is actually a different island! Did you ever notice that? It’s separated from DK Isle by water. I never noticed that till he pointed it out. I think I remember he said he thinks that the Manky’s being rejected by the other kongs lead to them having to relocate to that other island. And I think he even theorised that their previous home was the nearby treetop town…which would make perfect sense since orangutans spend 90% of their lives in trees. Also did you know in the gba version, if you go into stop and go station, DK can actually kill the rocrocs while they’re asleep with his hand slap? I thought that was so cool. It really makes the hand slap very useful. I used it all the time anyway cuz it’s so much fun. I love killing all kinds of enemies with it. It takes some skill but it’s a lot of fun.
I did watch DKVine's let's play but it's been awhile, could give it a re watch, and I need to get to some of their other stuff. I just always assumed that land mass across the sea in Vine Valley connected to DK Isle off screen, but it being a separate island is an interesting theory. Definitely makes sense that the Mankey's came from the treetop villages. And no I didn't know you could kill rockkrocs in any version, that's kinda crazy, weird it's only in the GBA version.
@@TheRedGuy also as a kid I figured out a MUCH better way to use Expresso that pretty much allows you to break the game. Take orangutan gang for instance. Everybody thinks it’s so hard to keep Expresso, it’s pretty much an escort mission. The trick to him is to glide till you get right above an enemy, then dismount him in the air. Expresso will drop harmlessly next to the enemy and DK or Diddy will pounce on their head. Then just hop back on keep going 😎
1:51:36 There’s a Zinger above the barrel in this screenshot (the barrel is at the bottom of the screen, and the Zinger is in the rough centre). It’s really tough, but you can see the horizontal stripes of its body. Still, good luck seeing that on a Game Boy screen.

The reason for the changes to the story in the GBA port might've been because Rare had hoped to continue the DK franchise on the GBA (and after DKC3, the DS) as Microsoft didn't care what they did for handhelds since they had no interest in handheld gameing, hence why we got Banjo Pilot. I do know that they wanted to make Donkey Kong Country 4 as a DS only title, however their success with the GBA ports apparently convinced Nintendo that DKC4 would be too major to NOT be on a mainline console. As a result the GBA version of the trilogy were probably made to fit more inline with DK64's tone and continue the ongoing conflicts between the Kong family & the Kremling army after DK64 by shifting it from console to handheld, only for Nintendo to killing off Rare's long-term plan because of their continued success with the franchise.
Instead of remaking Diddy Kong Racing (and taking out Banjo and Conker), why couldn't Rare just continue development for the Gamecube title Donkey Kong Racing and put it on the DS? Tiny could still return.
@ because Microsoft had bought Rare. They were allowed to develop games for the GBA because Microsoft had no interest in the handheld gaming market. But Microsoft wasn’t about to let them continue developing for the GameCube after buying them so they could get games on XBOX.

From the first time I got into the Donkey Kong Country series, I thought it was the coolest thing ever (yes, even more than Sonic). Grew up with the GBA remake of the game, so I disagree with almost every take you had on that version aside from the visuals. While I'm fine with how the game looks, it's definitely worse than how it looked on the SNES and the palette restoration hack made by marc_max helps make the game look a lot prettier.
god even with detail thats not even the same game. its some weird mix of city and other levels. and flying pigs i guess? i feel bad for the poor saps who thats the version they grew up with....

Bro they just put Donkey Kong Land on Switch what are the odds 😭😭😭😭 you gotta review it again
Nah I'm good
Whats your opinion on ps5 pro pc handhelds like steam deck and mobile gaming like new iphone15 max pro killing Nintendo
gang plank galleon would be playing on the elevator to hell and then in hell for eternity lol...
From the first time I got into the Donkey Kong Country series, I thought it was the coolest thing ever (yes, even more than Sonic). Grew up with the GBA remake of the game, so I disagree with almost every take you had on that version aside from the visuals. While I'm fine with how the game looks, it's definitely worse than how it looked on the SNES and the palette restoration hack made by marc_max helps make the game look a lot prettier.
monke
(This comment is long enough for algorithm points right? Well if not I'll write a new one later)
Also have you watched gtv s video on donkey kong country
DK land main theme is just Super Mario
I cannot stand play by play retelling “reviews”.

Hey Red can you review the mario & luigi games next
Could've used more ads. Society sucks, let us live!
The whole video just feels like you saying how much you don't like any version of the game... you don't like the meta story, you don't like the gb/gbc versions, you don't like the gba additions... you don't like dkl.. dang. I thought this was your favorite series
I clearly really like the SNES version even if I have some criticisms of it. Not sure how you missed that, it was the longest part of the video.
You don't like Kong women? Just paper bag it.
