I can answer this fairly quickly even tho I am watching the whole video. Play the one that speaks to your inner child. Most likely its the one you started with. For me it was Sonic Adventures DX on the Gamecube and the memories that game gave me live on to this day.
Why is this pinned? Vanilla SADX is a terrible version of the game. This is such a weird way to justify settling for less. It's simply a bad idea given the alternatives. Anybody with even a passing interest in SA1 should play the PC version with mods to restore the stuff that got butchered in the port. Or, if 30fps is acceptable, to just emulate the Dreamcast original. If I stuck with vanilla SADX as my go-to way to play, I'd appreciate the game way less than I do now.

Sadly most people think Adventure 1 was bad because of that port, and they are not wrong because that was official way to play on modern hardware.
I modded Sonic Adventure 1 DX in PC to look a lot like the Dreamcast because I know it looks bad and when the Dreamcast is way better so thanks to me modding that game for my first time ever playing SA1! The Dreamcast way!
@EricsonGamingNite plus mod manager for SA1 has a lot of bug fixes, if I remember correctly, so, except for few problems, it's definitely best way to play
I actaully grew up with the Dreamcast version first (got one at a yard sale and it had both SA1 and 2 with it); didn't have access to a Game Cube when it was out. When I got the chance to play DX on a friend's GC I was flabbergasted, this was nothing like what I remembered and everything felt wrong.

21:29 quite a bit of the Dreamcast textures were actually taken as real photos from real places the dev team went to. The new textures ruin this by making them generic
I wish there was a more extensive list of Chao World differences outside of a few textures. Additionally, a number of documented differences were skipped over like Mystic Ruins garden having shallower water (in fact you could drown in it as Tails) and Station Square having a skyline for DX. Other differences you forgot to mention: A number of animal ear models got changed to textures for DX, like the elephant and gorilla ears. Jewel Chao changing colours between DC and DX. Most notably gold went from a lime green to a more yellow colour. Bright Chao in the PC port due to a lighting bug. There are other anomalies regarding promotional artwork, such as Chao in Space featuring a Chao that has an unused mouth. 1:45:46 shows a very odd looking neutral fly Chao that has a lot longer horns as well as strange wings you can never get in the game.
More than happy to see other games get coverage from people passionate about them. Sometimes it can feel negligible depending on the game, but SA1 is a pretty good example of "This game didn't actually look or play as bad or old as you remember, the newer versions just don't look or play like the original version"
The DC had some tech, people though it was shit. Did you know that DC renders it's graphics at a higher resolution than the PS2 and downsamples it in order to reduce jagged edges. The PS2 uses the workaround of strange resolutions and terrible video output to smooth out the overall poor quality.
Definitely looking forward to going over SA2, since in my opinion its visual issues are much more damning - a bunch of times when you're meant to look at a screen in a cutscene to glean some plot-relevant information it's just showing THE WRONG THING.
If it's between the DC or GC, it's GC all day. Great multiplayer, some of the cutscenes play more appropriate music to add intensity (look at the scene where Shadow confronts rouge), more fleshed out glitches/better chao system, and the character models and finishing poses look a lot better on SA2B.
Man, nothing gaslit me about my childhood gaming experiences quite like SADX. I _knew_ the game looked amazing even compared to many games on the later three consoles, but back in the day before people had done all this compare and contrast in high quality online, it was just impossible to prove.
Dreamcast in general was basically an entire generation ahead of its time. SEGA's mismanagement of its advertising and its expensive but justifiable price tag meant nobody wanted to give it a second look despite how amazing it is.
I got the steam version a couple of days ago and I was having a hard time enjoying it. Today I finally managed to mod it and it DOES make a difference!
Yeah I used t the Better SADX mod a long time ago. It's really a shame that the port to modern systems didn't even have widescreen support by default. There's literally Dreamcast emulators that let you do that.
After modding in the Dreamcast models and lighting on the Steam port I honestly think it's impossible to go back to the original DX ports on GC and Steam/2004.
I loved ALL of this. I love videos like this that really go in depth about the differences between ports in video games. Sonic Adventure is a huge part of my childhood and every version of this game has a special meaning in my heart, flaws and all.

I wonder how many changes were just missed compared to the ones they saw and decided it wasn't important enough to fix. I also wonder if they regret making so many transparent effects.
I remember purchasing the Dreamcast and Sonic Adventure close to launch, I have never played DX or owned a GameCube. I have the PC ports. I have always felt that the Dreamcast version is the definitive one. For a 1998/1999 release, it was a real showcase of what the Dreamcast hardware could do. It really showed off the systems large (for the time) texture cache, and took advantage of the unique lighting/ vertex shading of the PowerVR GPU. I guess people will suggesting going with the PC version with mods. But I also recommend playing the Dreamcast game on ReDream or Flycast emulation,. Which still gives a close approximation of playing the game on real Dreamcast hardware.
seeing the extent of the differences is absolutely mind-blowing. if this were to come out today SEGA would have been absolutely destroyed online, and yet people have high regards for the dx port only because they played it as a kid. there is no good reason why you would ever prefer the dx versions over the dreamcast.
personally i grew up with the dreamcast version and don't really care all that much about visuals. do i prefer the dreamcast lighting? predictably so. but it's the same game in the end. ...mostly. my only real problem with SADX (specifically the pc versions) are the gameplay bugs from it being a port of a port. this version also being the only easily accessible version of the game nowadays also disappoints me. i wish they would sell both versions on steam, or even just fix the bugs.
Sadly even SADX is becoming inaccessible to many. The console versions were made for PS3 and 360, both of which only had digital versions. That's a problem because both online stores are reaching EOL. When that happens the Steam version is the only one left. Really sucks even ports haven't been coming.
@@Skylancer727 SADX is still available on the xbox series x digital store, if i remember correctly, so it's not completely lost. unfortunately the series x's 360 emulator *also* has a ton of bugs so it's even worse than before lol i really do wish they would start porting games other than the classic titles to newer hardware, too. emulation is always an option, but it's inaccessible to a majority of casual gamers and alienates a large portion of people who would possibly love the game if it were only available more easily.

Great video, even though this stuff definitely isn't news to me, I always love a good breakdown of niche Sonic minutiae. Thanks! While we're talking about SA1, apparently SA1 & 2 are being delisted from digital storefronts in Germany and Italy next month, along with a slew of other retro Sega games worldwide (SA1 & 2 are actually notable for being among the games in this group *not* being delisted in the USA, for example, while a bunch of other Sega games are). Sega only really seems to delist games when they have future plans related to the games they're delisting, so one can't help but wonder if they intend to re-release all of the above games in some new form soon. Whatever they do, hopefully it's better than the junk ports they had before!

I don’t hate all the changes as I grew up with the GameCube version but some things are pretty obviously worse. The best version should have been the GameCube and PC versions since they were more powerful and the texture downgrades were baffling too
I don't know if I fully agree on that. Like the Dreamcast didn't have twin sticks for the controllers, the disc drive is very noisy, and the memory card system on Dreamcast, while cool, is still a lot more tedious and finicky. A lot of flaws from the remake are really because they rushed the port job without properly finding alternatives to how the Dreamcast rendered things.
@@videotape2959 It sounds like it's grinding something. And if it makes noise and the Gamecube doesn't, well that's just a negative. I've actually seen a lot of people complain about it. TBH I’m familiar with the DX version and I don’t have any issues with it and I never encountered any bugs or glitches when I played it on PC so yeah I’ll stick with the pc version instead
You can mod the PC version if you're ever interested in experiencing the game a different way, from small bug fixes and tweaks to full conversions that make it exactly like the Dreamcast version. So technically, with the PC port you have the version that can be every version!
I mean no matter what you should still use mods on PC as the game by default doesn't support wide screen. At that point you can toggle between DC and DX settings in most mod loaders so you can just try both and see which you like. Like he showed you can even mix things like the new models and old textures, new models and textures with old lighting, etc.
@yousefslimani99 I used a mod called Better SADX that started by replacing all audio files in the game, though I don't know if it does that anymore. That version I used was really old and now requests you download a new mod loader instead. I don't know if does the same thing since I already had the old patch. I will say that mod was pretty painless. I even saw the new mod loader doesn't even need to know your folder location, it finds it on it's own and even linked immediately for SA2 as well.
@@Cifesk Huh, I wouldn't have guessed they would be that close. To be honest, I only cared about playing the Adventure games. Now I have both of them on PS3, to my surprise.
I would very much like to see dreamcast gameplay vs sadx dreamcast conversion. Idk if my memory is serving me wrong here but dreamcast comversion didnt exactly look like the dc version
If I want to play the original game as authentically as possible, but don't want to get a dreamcast just for it, would I be better off emulating it (with flycast?) or played the modded PC version? If the emulation has no issues, I assume that'd be more accurate, but I don't know if thats the case.
Emulation would be the most accurate, but you'd also have to play it at 30fps. That makes modded the way to go. Like he showed the mod loader, but you can also just use Better SADX which is a bit quicker to get the best way to play. Like there's just a button that straight converts all models and textures back to the DC version and there's another for the old lighting. It has more but that's all you need for the authentic use. Like it has one that lets you use the new models with the old DC textures. Really gives the best of both worlds that no alternative does.
@mariomadproductions Only downside to emulation is some emulators handle some of the sounds of the game a little funny. Main one I've noticed is the booster ramp which sounds like it's played multiple times. Like he said in the video, this is actually a bug the Dreamcast version just had though some emulators handle it even worse than original hardware. Other than that though I've found the emulators to look nearly flawless. Like I even have one on my phone called Reicast that supports arbitrary screen ratios filling the full screen. Though some emulators don't load everything out of frame correctly, especially in cutscenes. Reicast was fine last time I used it, but when I first used it that feature looked extremely buggy.
@@Skylancer727 Thanks. It seems like Reicast has a successor called Flycast, so I'll try that. Redream is another recommended dreamcast emulator, but it supposedly has large input lag, so I won't bother with that.
Is that free cam mode a PC mod or a Gamecube version hack? If it is a PC mod, where can I find it? I haven't been able to find one. (Though to be fair, I haven't checked in quite a long time)
I just followed the guide on GitHub I think? I don't remember but I do remember having issues before switching to 3.65 ensō, so I recommend doing so if you haven't
How does this come up after i think about getting a dreamcast to play adventure 1 and 2 I keep bouncing between pc emulation and garage sale hunting. Granted i have them on the gcn, but id like to try the orignal hardware

@@crestofhonor2349 Lost World PC is missing content and some visual effects.
@@ChiefMedicPururu The missing content is the exclusive Wii U content that would have never made it over because of Nintendo

@ I already know about this! It seems that everyone who plays the pc version they should install these mods first that you’ve mentioned them
I mean no matter what you should still use mods on PC as the game by default doesn't support wide screen. At that point you can toggle between DC and DX settings in most mod loaders so you can just try both and see which you like. Like he showed you can even mix things like the new models and old textures, new models and textures with old lighting, etc.
@ well I’m not too familiar with sa mods, does it also improve audio quality like voices, sounds and even the music?
@yousefslimani99 I used a mod called Better SADX that started by replacing all audio files in the game, though I don't know if it does that anymore. That version I used was really old and now requests you download a new mod loader instead. I don't know if does the same thing since I already had the old patch.
I will say that mod was pretty painless. I even saw the new mod loader doesn't even need to know your folder location, it finds it on it's own and even linked immediately for SA2 as well.
What about the PS3 and Xbox One versions of SA1?
Same as PC
@@Cifesk Huh, I wouldn't have guessed they would be that close. To be honest, I only cared about playing the Adventure games. Now I have both of them on PS3, to my surprise.

how do you begin the Chaos 0 fight with 7 rings and 1 minute and 36 seconds on the clock? how is that happening?

I would very much like to see dreamcast gameplay vs sadx dreamcast conversion. Idk if my memory is serving me wrong here but dreamcast comversion didnt exactly look like the dc version
@@mossen98 even the mods can't fix everything, sadly
@@Cifesk dreamcast vs emulation would be great too
In short, it's best to play SADX and SA2 modded to hell and back on steam.
another awesome video
Wanted to go to sleep an hour ago now I am watching amy in hot shelter lmao
Hope you do and SA2 version of this as well
If I want to play the original game as authentically as possible, but don't want to get a dreamcast just for it, would I be better off emulating it (with flycast?) or played the modded PC version? If the emulation has no issues, I assume that'd be more accurate, but I don't know if thats the case.
Emulation would be the most accurate, but you'd also have to play it at 30fps. That makes modded the way to go. Like he showed the mod loader, but you can also just use Better SADX which is a bit quicker to get the best way to play. Like there's just a button that straight converts all models and textures back to the DC version and there's another for the old lighting.
It has more but that's all you need for the authentic use. Like it has one that lets you use the new models with the old DC textures. Really gives the best of both worlds that no alternative does.
Thanks. Tbh I think I will must go with emulation if its more accurate, I don't really mind about it being 30fps.
It is kinda nuts how bad the Gamecube port is (and the modern ports based on the shitty Gamecube port). Just play it on Dreamcast.
Or PC, with mods.
legitimamente exclamei "yes!" quando vi a notificação
Is that free cam mode a PC mod or a Gamecube version hack? If it is a PC mod, where can I find it? I haven't been able to find one. (Though to be fair, I haven't checked in quite a long time)
Dolphin's built-in free camera. The SA1 (SADX?) Debug Mode mod on Gamebanana does the same job
@Cifesk Thanks!!!
2:05:07 how did you get sonic adventure working on the vita? Ive tried and it just keeps crashing past the title screen :(
I just followed the guide on GitHub I think? I don't remember but I do remember having issues before switching to 3.65 ensō, so I recommend doing so if you haven't
@@Cifesk I already did that
@@norso that's strange. Is your Flycast / SA1 ROM corrupted? Or both? Do you have the necessary plugins installed?
@@Cifesk I installed all the plugins but I could try another sonic adventure rom

Btw this isn't to make fun of the og game or the Dreamcast ofc, I just thought the clip was funny
How does this come up after i think about getting a dreamcast to play adventure 1 and 2
I keep bouncing between pc emulation and garage sale hunting.
Granted i have them on the gcn, but id like to try the orignal hardware
pc emulation
Garage sale hunting.
Steam + mods.
Steam with the dreamcast conversion mods
And I thought the Gamecube port was bad 💀
This video is like crack to my autistic heart
I’ll always appreciate the SADX version at least for adding more skips to the levels for speedrunning lol. Breaking an already janky game further doesn’t come without its benefits.
let's gooooooooooo

Dreamcast and Steam modded are the best version.
DX vanilla is trash.
I would play pc so I can mod it
