I know the hard work involved. I just did 20,000 Square feet over 5 yards this weekend for myself and family. Scalping, mowing, seeding, peat moss, etc. Hard work. Lol.
Next time you spread the peat moss, consider purchasing a peat moss/compost roller spreader. it would have made quick work of the peat moss given you a really even spread. I found one on Amazon for about $150. Anyway, nice job.

Nice work! I recently did a full lawn renovation and used Triple Threat in NC. It came in great considering I had my yard down to bare dirt. I also wanted to give the seed a try after seeing Olee's yard.

The Scott's starter fertilizer with Tenacity is AWESOME. The problem I had last year is I didn't reapply after six weeks and the crabgrass came right up. This year I'm going to try applying it at half rate so I can reapply again after six weeks. By that time my grass seed should be established.
Good idea! Another alternative strategy would be to apply dithiopyr (dimension) in liquid form at the max rate once the grass has established. Dimension is also a pre emergent, but also will kill young crabgrass that has emerged.

For all they peat moss you should have a compost spreader. It would make the job much easier and faster and better coverage. Its a night and day difference to spread with a compost spreader.. try for the Lanzie one just my 2c .. nice job by the way !!
Yeah I agree but it’s freakin’ expensive. Surprisingly it’s not even available to rent. I so seriously am missing the spreader!

Lot of work and lot of money goes in to bring a lawn to maintenance mode.
3 times watering and nursing the grass seedling is also required.
If it rains then peat mos moss gets washed and concentrates in certain areas and created bare patches. Seeds also can get washed away.
You have a reapply peat moss to cover up the seeds for soil contact. You have to stamp the whole yard for good seed to soil contact.
Using compost is recommended during maintenance mode.
Going organic is the key. Save the Soil and nature.

Really it’s all in the method of how you throw it down. When using your shovel take the peat moss out keeping your shovel level and and close to the ground and twist your arms as you fling the peat moss. It’s like dust so if it’s to high it just disappears before hitting the ground. I had one bag cover 1500sq ft with very minimal light spots. It’s all in how you throw er down Hahahahaha. Good luck

New to the lawn thing… great video with a lot of knowledge! Question: I used to cover seeds with top soil, but I see a lot of videos using peet moss. Is it better to do so?
Top soil works if you don’t bury the seed too much. A nice thin layer. There are different opinions on this. You could just rake it in and roll the seed in. That works too. But peat moss is very good with holding onto moisture. And it’s weed free. Thats part of the reason why I like it.

Currently I have the cultivars contained in GCI TTTF and Jonathan Green Black Beauty Ultra (small amount of perennials rye and KBG), but I'm always on the lookout for additional premium tall fescue cultivars for diversity.

Thanks for the videos, great content! Is there a risk of burning the lawn from putting down both fertilizers at the same time?
The OceanGro/Milorganite is non-burning. I have never had an issue with it when combined with other fertilizers.
I live in Washington State when is the best time to remove moss. Also to reseed the grass when is the best time. One more thing to detached your lawn when is it the best time
For the moss, You want it to be warm out, but not hot and do it before you reseed. After a few days you can take out the dead moss then do your dethatch and overseed. Best time in my opinion is late summer/early fall. You want enough time for the seed to germinate and grow before the first frost. You want to time it so that you can get a few good mows in (say 4-6) before the first frost. Not sure what that timing looks like in Washington. But here in the East Coast, I typically do it in late August.
I used this method last fall and had great results. Can you provide some details on what you do to the lawn in the Spring? Is it as simple as dethatching and using pre-emergent fertilizer, and filling in bare spots? All of your videos on rehabbing and starting new lawns are "fall" season projects. I just want to get off to a good start this spring after my fall success. Thx.

How low do you cut tall fescue before overseeding? And I’ve never seen using both starter and molgranite at the same time during seed down - great idea!
Honestly, as low as you are comfortable. Me personally… probably down to about 2”.
Fairly new to having a lawn, but does it help to add new top soil before overseeding?
Seed-to-soil contact is key. You don’t have to smother the seed in topsoil. Actually the seed can sit on top of the soil... so long as it’s making cold contact, it will germinate and root in.
Lawngineer, thanks for showing the video I am new and start learning this oversees process. I have a couple questions. 1) should it lay down peat moss first before seeding and fertilizer. 2) how long do you have to wait before mowing. When mowing will it suck up all the peat moss out of the lawn?. Thanks
Peat moss goes down last. And you want to try and wait as long as you can before mowing… but if the existing grass is looking like it’s starting to flop over on itself, then go ahead and mow on the highest setting of your mower. You won’t suck up the peat moss.

Try to stick with grass seeds that are ideal for the climate… for example, probably not a good idea to mix warm season grasses with cool season grasses unless you live in a sort of transitional zone where the climate could support both. Also, depends on your cutting height too… for example, turf type tall fescue likes to be cut long, so if you were trying to maintain a shorter lawn, you might want to mix with grass types that will withstand a shorter cut.
I'm on day 14 of my front yard reno. I used Bluebank KBG and germination day was on the 7th day. It's coming in very nice however I'm sure I have a couple weeks before first mow. Will use my 7 blade earyhwise reel. I'm from NJ and when do you think I should start hitting it with some small does of N. Normally I would be loading up N before winter however not sure if I should do that till spring with the grass being so new.
Typically can hit with about 1/2 lb of N per 1,000 SF about 6 weeks after germination. I plan to hit this with another round of Starter fert the week of October 19th (Just before Halloween). Then around Thanksgiving I’ll put it to bed with a round of Milorganite.
How’s the yard looking now?
@@TheLawngineer I'm very happy with how it came in. There is a couple areas along the front of the border wall that is a little slower to fill in. That area doesn't get many hours of sun but I'm confident it will be ok. Yesterday was the 3rd mow so far. I decided not to do a 2nd app of starter since of high phos levels. A few weeks ago I applied a very small urea app with pump sprayer along with some sea kelp and root hume. Then applied some Humic DG. Last week applied 1/4 lb of N of Pro Peat 17-0-4. This week I sprayed 12 oz. of SLS 15-0-15. Next week will do another 1/4 lb. of pro peat. I will put up a picture slide video soon that will show progress starting at day of germination.

I’m from New Jersey too!!! :). I’m a new homeowner that went from renting and never taking care of a lawn, to 2.5 acres!!! I have no idea how to start!!!
What stores do you shop at? The big box stores or the local landscaping stores? I am looking for more budget friendly options since I have a large lawn! Thanks!!! :)
Congrats on the new home! 2.5 acres is a lot! Most budget friendly program might be a liquid program. But you’ll need to have the equipment to spray. And a backpack might be too small for such a large area if you plan to do it all. You can get bulk quantities of liquids from a Site One.
Edit: you might also benefit from a hybrid of liquid and granular. Liquids for your pre-emergents and disease/fungus control as well as bug issues (if any). And granular for your nitrogen… probably the cheapest you’ll find is a urea based nitrogen.
For such a large lot, I would recommend a soil test to determine if how much other nutrients you need. Only buy for what you need. i.e. if you soil test comes back with high phosphorus, don’t get fertilizer with phosphorus in it. You’d just be wasting money since it’s not going to do anything for you.

You can put milo down at the same time as the starter fertilizer. Milo is going to breakdown slowly over time and the starter fertilizer will breakdown more quickly. So you’ll get that quick release of Nitrogen from the starter to really get things going... and slow release from the Milo to keep you going down the road.

What setting did you use on your broadcast spreader for spreading the tall fescue?
I never pay attention to the spreader setting. I just make sure I try to evenly distribute the pounds of seed over the area. For example, we had a 50 lb bag of seed and overseeded at a rate of 5 lbs per 1,000 SF. We have 10,000 SF, so I dumped the entire bag into the spreader and started on a low setting. Then made multiple passes until the hopper was empty.

Thanks! This is in Hamilton (outside of Trenton). When we did this renovation we did not core aerate. Instead, we dethatched and used liquid aeration products. Came in nicely!

@@Gandio420 you don’t have to wait at all. You can use the Scott’s starter fert plus weed preventer. It contains Mesotrione which will allow new grass seed to germinate but prevent weeds from germinating. Good luck with your overseeding!

I have a question by the way. Does it not too much of fertilisers? 2 types. Is it ok?
One is a quick release fertilizer (starter Fertilizer). The other is slow release. All good and won’t burn the lawn.
which spreader is better for seeding? Broadcast of drop spreader?
So I like to use a drop spreader only for a trim pass or two. That way I keep the seed out of any beds or areas you don’t want seeded. The drop spreader will literally drop the seed between the wheels of the spreader.
Then I’ll switch over to a broadcast (rotary) spreader to cover the rest of the lawn. The broadcast spreader is faster and will give you better coverage. If you only use a drop spreader, you have to make sure you properly overlap on each pass, or you risk only planting grass strips.
I like both, I just use them differently.
I realize this is from 2020 but it appears that you didn't aerate the lawn before putting down anything. It also seems like you might have some fungus issues that need addressing. Like others have said, good effort but you could've used less peat moss by getting a landzie spreader. I've considered peat moss for my next overseeding (instead of straw), and I intend to use a combination of compost/peat moss as a final top dressing.

I did not do mechanical aeration, but did do a few liquid aeration applications which worked out well. Here we are dealing with very loose, sandy soils so it wasn’t too bad.
Also, we didn’t have any fungus issues here. What you are seeing in this video is the aftermath of killing off weeds in the previous video (Part 3).

They serve the same purpose, but I believe peat moss is better because it will be virtually free of weed seeds and pathogens.

What is the name of the exact product you used. There are a few versions of weed be gone.

Dam, 22 bags of 2 cubic feet of peat moss at $11.50?bag...$253 alone.
It was a lot! This season we will try to find something cheaper. Also, our pH is really low here... 4.5 and the peat moss certainly does not help.

We only used the drop spreader for a trim (or perimeter) pass. Switched to rotary for filling in everything else.

How many square feet will one bag of peat moss cover?
Elder Everett Gilbert 1 bag is good for about 300 - 400 SF when spread thin (like about 1/8”).
I probably could have used a few more bags for this application. This was 22 bags for 10,000 SF. But could have used another 8-10 bags. The method on how you spread it also matters. The method in this video was to help save time. So we got a little heavy handed in some areas. You can also get a peat moss/compost spreader. Never used one, but heard good things about it. The best way is by hand (total control), but you’ll be spreading for hours and it’s a huge mess.

Also, I discuss the watering issues too... it was a huge issue and we are only renovating and maintaining 10,000 SF of this property. The watering was done just to germinate the seed and get things established. To help things out, the video I linked above (with the results) show me pre-germinating the seed.
This was a huge water saver! The cultivar of grass seed was specifically selected for this lawn because of its drought and heat tolerance properties. Now that the lawn is established, there is no irrigation on the lawn.

Why don’t you use your drop spreader with the fertilizer
You can do it for a trim pass. But if you use it for the whole yard, you have to overlap with it over the wheels and it just takes longer to apply. The rotary spreader broadcast it out further in a wide swath that covers a much wider area.

Man that's over $500 of crap just to get a slightly greener lawn. I don't see it being worth it. I rather pay $30 for 5k ft of seed, $25 for 3 40lb bags of manure and spread it thinly over 3k ft of yard. And call it a day. ✌🏻
Valid point! It can get very expensive. Especially the larger the area you have. This lot has about an acre of land. We just chose to cut it off at 10,000 SF. I have yet to try manure. I’m open to giving it a try. I recently got a top dressing spreader that will make it easier to spread things finer/thinner and faster! Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts!

I used steer manure on one section I seeded last month and chicken manure on the other.
They were both composted. They both worked well, but the chicken manure (which I worked into the top 2”) area was phenomenal.
It may haven been because I read chicken is higher in phosphorus, which is good for seedlings/root growth.

Down-voted because you use peatmoss...very unstainabele, very bad for the enviroment....Peat moss bogs take 1000s of year to grow and are important for our planets ecosystem.
Screen compost is cheap, readily available at the home center in bags or by the yard from your local lanscape supplier, or free if you make it yourself.
Screened compost is super enviromentally friendly, and does the same job if not better. And a good compost has dark color which helps absorb solar radiation...warming up the ground in early spring or late fall thus speeding up seed germination.

Fake news. We in Ireland are burning turf to keep us warm for thousands of years. We are not stopping for cracked environmentalists.. sure ireland stopping burning turf will make zero effect on the global carbon enmisions .. time a bit of common sense entered the debate.. tell you what , when Russia China India and the USA stop burning coal and peat then i will consider not burning turf or coal. Maybe, just maybe God put turf there for us to warm our asses in the winter and spread peat moss on the ground to feed the soil. Of course you can’t mention God can we?
