Nice! Keep that baby grass well irrigated during the summer heat. Hopefully you get enough shade to keep the afternoon sun off most of it to avoid burning things out.

Thats exactly what I do. When I seeded my first lawn, or a totally seed on bare dirt like here, I like to use the drop spreader. I would use a broadcast spreader for fertilizing jobs. I totally agree with the light raking, I cant tell from the video but I used a light bouncing motion to bounce or rake the seed in, after that the rolling. Love the video brother! Water seems to be the biggest problem with most seedings unfortunately!
Nice! Regarding the rake, I just let the rake rest on the ground under its own weight and I pull it around. As I pull, it bounces around a bit. Thanks for watching!
Looks good I've never seen a junk free bag of peatmoss. I have the 24 inch landzie with a 2k sq ft yard I think 3 bags was perfect for my last years overseed
Questions: does this work on harder / red soil also? #2 do the same rules apply on a hill or sloped terrain? #3 will this work in heavily shaded areas, will grass survive heavy winter leaf coverage (late winter leaf cleanup)? #4 how do you prevent / remove moss build up, i have more moss than grass now. P.S. heavy shade South Carolina heat seed recommendations please, bermuda or fescue. Thanks.
Should work in clay. I know folks with red clay who have had great success with fescue. Don’t count on this to prevent washouts on steep slopes. To protect against washout, you’ll need an erosion control blanket. They work great on steep slopes. Universal truth to lawncare in general is that you need sunlight. If you have heavy shade, you’re gonna have problems (maybe not at germination, but later on when trying to sustain the grass). If you get partial sunlight, you might be OK. But your concern is regarding leaves building up on a newly seeded area, should be OK through the germination process. You’ll eventually have baby grass under the leaves and you can carefully remove the leaves. I don’t have a good answer for you on moss other than considering using a product called moss out. I’ve never used it.
Nice & thorough video. I have a smaller lawn then yours and don’t have room to buy the peat moss spreader. So, what about mixing peat moss with Kellogg topper and just toss. I am thinking by mixing the mix won’t be as powdery vs peat moss only. And then do I need a roller to press the seeds down?
You can spread by hand, but it’s going to be a mess (even if you mix it) and it’s gonna be harder to control the thickness over the lawn (you’ll have some heavier areas in some spots and lighter areas in others). But I’ve spread peat moss by hand many times with success. You don’t need to roll the seed. It just helps from washout during lighter to medium rain events.
Hi. I for the first time am starting a new lawn from dirt. I had some spots that were really compacted clay soil so I mixed compost into the soil a few days before seeding. Now when I water in those spots where I put the compost the soil gets soggy really quick. Any tips on what to do?
Thank you. I put the tenacity down pretty much at the time of seeding (immediately after rolling the seed in) to maximize the amount of pre-emergent control. why did you apply mesotrione in a liquid AND use a starter fertilizer that already has mesotrione included? I hope this doesn’t create a problem for you

I need your help Vince. I want to seed 80% PRG and 20% KBG and my lawn is about 2000 sq. ft. PRG is about 20 lbs and KBG is about 6 lbs for 2000 sq. ft. Do i calculate it as 80% of 26 and 6% of 26? How many lbs of each do I need to seed 2000 sq. ft?
I wouldn’t look at in in terms of the seeding rate. When you buy a bag of seed with a mix, the percentages are based on the total weight of the bag. So if I have a 10 lb bag of seed that has 80% of PRG and 20% of KBG, then there is 8 lbs of PRG and 2 lbs of KBG. Note there are other things too like inert matter and stuff, but I’m just keeping the math simple. I’d recommend working with that ratio. For every 8 lbs of PRG, mix 2 lbs of KBG. I would blend the two together with that mix ratio, then spread. No matter what your seed rate is, you’ll have a consistent 80/20 mix when spreading if mixed well enough.

I used 8 bags of peat moss on my 2500 sq feet and it turned out great

Try core aeration. If you have low spots, try filling them in. If it’s really bad, consider a drainage system.

You don’t absolutely need peat moss. So long as you keep up with the watering and the seeds have good contact with the soil, you should be good.
