Automatic Chicken Feeder

  • Check out the latest addition to the chicken coop - The Automatic Chicken Feeding System. It is not fully automatic I suppose because you do still have to fill it with food but that is about it. No more walking in the coop and filling the tiny feeder that we had, and this one is much cleaner. In this video I run through the build process for this simple feeder design and also show it in action. This should hold enough food for a few days at least and will cut down on the amount of time spent cleaning out and filling the smaller feeders. This is also much better than the feeders that sit on the ground as they get full of dirt quickly and need to be cleaned. I am using 4" drainage piping for this project which is much cheaper than the 4" schedule 40 PVC. The fittings for the drainage pipe are also much cheaper keeping the cost of this project under $20. Thanks for watching and for more information or other sustainable projects please visit simplesuburbanliving.com

    Just made one yesterday. Once I had the materials, it took about a half hour to cut, put together and install. Went out to the coop this morning and no more mess from the chickens kicking feed all over the place.

    Great design! Clean and efficient!
    I would suggest cutting a rectangular hole along the side of one of the pipes and then covering it with a piece of clear tubing, cut apropriately so that you may be able to check the amount of feed or water that is in the system.

    Your setup is really nice & thank you for showing us what you have done. I wanted to mention (in case you don't know) chickens love every scrap you have left from the table. They eat table scraps better than a dog, and we all know how much a dog loves table scraps. Boy does people food make chickens lay eggs. (meat included)

    I just watched both the auto watering and feeder videos. I will be adding those to my coop this year. My five hens are just over a year old now and they go through about 3 lbs of feed and almost 3 gal of water per day. Love your videos.

    I saw an awesome trick to show how much food is left. Drill a small hole in the top where you fill the food at. Place a wooden dowel inside it. The dowel will sit on top of the food and slowly sink as the food supply lowers. You can even paint the dowel at different levels, ie 3 days of food left.

    Nice design, you made cutting the trough look easy. I happen to notice that you glued the wrong side of some of the pipe. I don't think it made much of a difference since the main part of the feeder is under the coop.

  • @kimward3634
    @kimward3634 7 років тому +1

    Your setup was so neat, I made the same thing for my chickens. Unfortunately living in Phoenix AZ, this system didn't work too well. After 1 week, I opened up the lid to add more food and found lots of mold growing. Pipe was the same length and angle of yours. I was so bummed! I did notice the young chickens (7 weeks old) were shying away from this feeder! No wonder! Moldy food - and when I disassembled it - wow - very bad smell. Maybe it was the food? The higher than normal humidity the past few weeks? Not sure. Just wanted others to be aware of my experience in the AZ climate.

    • @SSLFamilyDad
      @SSLFamilyDad  7 років тому +2

      +Kim Ward for the first two years this feeder never got wet but as soon as the joints loosened up from me shaking it all around I also started getting moisture inside. Make sure you glue the fittings very well and also pit a screw in each joint. If you can, make the feeder pipe go straight into the feeder without the 45's that should do the trick!

    Hi! Thanks for the great video, will most definitely copy many ideas. I have just one question. Are you having any problems with other animals being attracted by the food? Aka mice, rats and so on? I have an extra large cage (around 160 sq feet) where I’ll probably set the coop, but the metal mesh is much larger than yours, so maybe that’s why I’ve had problems with unwanted intruders in the past. Is your coop always closed?

    • @SSLFamilyDad
      @SSLFamilyDad  9 років тому +2

      Terri Hammond There is not enough room on top of the watering system for them to perch and with the holes cut out of the feeder I don't think they have room there either. I have not seen them trying to perch in either place. Great question!

    • @SSLFamilyDad
      @SSLFamilyDad  10 років тому +3

      Thanks, the feed doesn't really get stuck in the middle much. The chickens can reach in from the feed locations and peck at it which loosens it up enough to fall down. It has been working great and last about a week per fill with 6 chickens. Thanks for watching!!

    On the same principle I made automatic feeders for my rabbits which provided grains for three days but they weren't 100% reliable and I had to check for poop contamination every day and I found out they were eating too much and got fatter than I wanted them. Also, they were spilling the seeds by digging in with front arms so I wasn't happy how it worked and decided to tive feed them daily. I'd like to know if chickens are as greedy and did you notice they are getting too fat and what is the seed consumption from this semi automatic feeder compared to recomended manual feeding?
    Thanks for sharing. I will use this design. Good luck

I'm curious to see if they come out right away in the morning if they dont have their food in with them during the night! Time will tell. Also, I built your waterer. Works great! It works best with the crumble you get at TSC or Family Farm and Home. I have been using this setup for 5 years and it is still working great. If it gets wet inside the tube the feed will stick. Normal operation, if food is stuck in the 45 degree tube just give it a quick shake and the food falls down into the bins.

      @@SSLFamilyDad I'm also experiencing the feed not flowing out to the traughs quite like I hoped. I am currently feeding grower at this time and not sure if that has anything to do with it. I have a 90° angle coming out from the "T" thanks!

    Absolutely love your automatic feeder idea!!! I have only 9 brown leghorns that are only 6 weeks old that will lay white eggs in couple months. they are in my garage for now until my get my chicken tractor all set up for them for auto feed and watering systems. Your link to your watering system didn't work for me. can you please check on that for me ?? or send me a new link to the correct web site??? I'd love to see how you set that up also!! My baby chicks peck at their chicken starter crumbles food until it just turns to dust! do you have that problem and if so how do you clean out the crumbles dust in their food?? Anyway...PLEASE fix the link to your watering system!!! Would love to see it!

    No disrespect meant but without making the capped end just a pop-off type that looks like an open invitation for critters.

      Jewel Dreamer Nope, they just eat what they need and stop when they stop. Chickens need access to food all the time especially for egg layers like these. Thanks for checking it out!
