I was at Stevie Ray Vaughn's last concert the night his helicopter crashed after the show at Alpine Valley, Wisconsin USA August 26th 1990. The fog was so bad that we stopped and got a hotel room on the way home. The lineup was SRV, Eric Clapton, Robert Cray and Buddy Guy. I think Jimmie Vaughn and The Fabulous Thunderbirds played too but that was a long time ago. I know that the night before Jeff Healey played.
Thanks, Elephant! This is widely known as one of his best live performances...the first time he steps up to the mic to sing.. he doesn't.. seems like he knew that he had more to say on the guitar first... he is a "channel" to the Gods of music.. even Buddy Guy said that he felt like he should step into the audience b/c he might "learn something" .. nobody else like him.. I appreciate your reaction.. hope you do more... (RIP.. gone too soon...)
Stevie is the GOAT, regardless of genre, and I consider this the greatest use of a guitar I have heard in my 58 years. Stevie's voice has been described as honeyed gravel or honey over gravel.
Legendary guitarist, Eric Clapton said that Stevie is an open channel and that the music flows unobstructed through him. Eric also said that Stevie had the unbelievable ability to play for long periods of time without needing to back off and figure out where he wants to go next. Eric said that he had never seen a man more at one with his ax than Stevie was.
