Ah, when an F1 car could be started without hundreds of technicians and computers!
At the Goodwood Festival of Speed this year, one of the JPS Lotus 72s resolutely refused to fire up for almost ten minutes, despite much squirting of ‘Magic Juice’ into each of the eight trumpets. That was just old fashioned 50 year old bad luck. It sounded magnificent once the Cossie came to life I have to admit.

0:32 It's ridiculous how little driver protection there was back then.

Drivers' feet were the first to suffer in many crashes in open wheel cars back then. I remember reading about all of the foot injuries in formula cars when I was young, and followed the sport intently.

@@hugejohnson5011 Do you know why the feet and legs are so vulnerable? And it doesn't result from the crushing of the tub. Drivers in all racing classes suffer from this.

@@JB91710 Geez, I really believe it was precisely because of the feet and legs being the first at the crash scene, so to speak. And, yes, also due to the impact and deformation of the monocoque at that spot. I believe even Mike Hailwood, legendary motorcycle racer, switched to formula cars, and then fairly quickly retired with a limp, because his feet got potted. He at least came out of retirement long enough to hop on a bike after years away from it, and win the Isle of Man TT. Guy was an amazing racer. But yeah, I have always believed that the position of the feet in an open wheel car, and the crushed nose area of the tub are why the feet went first. When they incorporated what was called a "safety tub" and other improvements, we saw less of the foot injuries. When the front wheels and suspension were designed to purposely break from the car, and shed the energy of impact to the chassis was one of the first steps toward making the cars safer.

@hugejohnson5011 What's also reduced injuries are letting go of the steering well and pulling your knees back just before impact and let the belts do their job. Both are hard to wrap your mind around.

@@JB91710 I imagine it was quite a change for the guys who had "bridged eras" so to speak. Even up into the '60s, they Grand Prix race cars had no seatbelts, and the guys who ran those cars made it into the '70s and safety harnesses. Jackie Stewart was a huge campaigner for driver safety innovations back then. A driving force for safety actually. Cheers.
