The thing is 'supporting' and playing offensively are the same thing with the HH. The songs are some of your best attacks. If you're playing a HH by hiding it a corner and just doing buffs you're playing it wrong.

It is a support weapon and there is nothing wrong with the term since it indicates, that you can support your team and supply yourself and that it will be used offensively. What else do you think the word "weapon" indicates?
I do like the heavy bowgun due to its capacity for ammo verus the light bowgun. Though I do like light bowgun's mobility.

I like the heavy bowgun because I can use 3 shield mods to tank hits easily instead of having to dodge or use I-frames.
I like how stable the shots are with the HBG. Spread Shot 3 with HBG feels like Spread Shot 1 with LBG.
As well as being able to take stronger ammo with you. Not ammo type, but ammo level
New to the MH franchise but I was really disappointed to not find any + Defense HBG's with Wyvernheart to use with Shield stacking. :(
Light Bowgun is not a support weapon. It can be used for support, but so can Heavy Bowgun. Light Bowgun is the weapon you use when you want to end a monsters whole career.
I agree it is very strong manage to put a rathalos back at it's place with a friend and we wer just rc 5-4

LBG is easily my favourite weapon in World. the ratio mobility/damage/commitment is just too good.
° Elemental builds are pretty efficient damage wise (rapid fire is nuts)
° Access to mutiple status during the same hunt
° Mobility is over the top (even more with dodge extender)
° Staying far from monster prevents annoyement like wind pressure, quakes, roar, Elder dragon shields and above all triping from your teamates
° You're probably the best support, keeping your teamates alive with healing rounds and being able to use pods and life powder super quickly.
I raelized how good it is when everyone was talking about Tempered Kirin being a problem, but I could solo it fairly fast with a Fire lemental build on first try ~
The only real dangers are Teostra's and Nergigante's insta pounce, which can put you in a pickle if you're not careful ~

Charge blade vs switch axe
Not even close... Switch Axe is the weakest weapon in the game. Slow, low DPS, and no Block. That's coming from a guy with 200 SA hunts and 30 CB hunts.
Well, switch axe is fun! I only recently picked up SA and I like the game-play, however the biggest downside is immobility when attacking in sword mode... About low damage? Circle swings into transformation leads to some super heavy series of attacks, but again it can be interrupted. That's why you need to disable a monster first --> this is where barooth switch axe shines! Overall, I enjoy it, even though people seem not to be contend with it and some despise this weapon classs...
Switch Axe is weaker,I have around 120+ quests with Switch Axe and about 50ish with the Charge Blade. Although Switch Axe is super fun to play
As a switch axe user, Charge blade is 20x better.
Idk, I find that I get cut off mid combo nearly all the time with the switch axe, I can usually block with the charge blade.

I try to keep my gun selection down to ammo type. the Todatchi Lion II is my go to gun. but I will admit the reason I went heavy in the first place was for damage, I had no idea the actual damage could be equal.
I still love my Tobi Lion too. great slice capacity, can fire sleep and para, wyvernsnipe and if nothing else is available anymore it can still pierce well :)

I'm trying to figure out what weapon is best if I want to roll with status effects. Heavy bowgun or light?
ArlanKels light by far. The Karma can apply most statues and have a rapid fire normal ammo 2 with 30% affinity so you can paralyze it and unload several clips into it’s face with each doing 90-150 per round. Edit: when I say “round” I mean with the combined damage with all three shots hitting and being a crit.

Hunting Horn does have support elements to it but it is not just for support. It is 100% viable in solo (just like anything else).

Heavy bowgun with guard and guard up is insanely fun....
From my time using the HBG shield, you don't need to ads to get the benefit. Just need to not be shooting/reloading/rolling (and a brief time after) and facing the right direction.
Also looking at the HBG special types, everyone mentions that snipe is only good against large monsters, but when are you going to be pulling out your special shot against non large monsters? Heart only gets good when you're firing for an extended period of time uninterrupted, which is much more situational in my mind. That and snipe might need some setup time, but it's burst damage that's done once you fire, while heart is a sustained barrage that takes some serious time to reach the damage output of snipe. and while the player is trying to reach those damage levels, the snipe user is back to firing regular shots. Heart makes you feel more of a badass though.
The only real con of heart is the slow set up. Other than that its bascially like rapid firing or siege firing with Brave HBG. Can deal a lot of damage on weakspots rather quickly and if you think you need to use a different ammo type you could you knkw switch.
When he says large monsters, he's not talking about the difference between a kestodon and a Great Jagras. He's talking about the difference between a Great Jagras and a Deviljho. Snipe is better against large, long monsters like Deviljho, Nergigante, or Xeno'jiiva, but it's terrible against smaller, fast monsters like Odogaron, Legiana, or Kirin where it only hit 2 or 3 times (unless you get a perfect shot, which is pretty difficult considering the amount of setup needed). Heart, on the other hand, does far more damage on the faster monsters and is much easier to use, since you can move while using it and even stop shooting to block an attack. Overall, when Snipe is good it does a massive amount of damage otherwise it's not really worth the effort, while Heart isn't really bad against any monster, it just won't do as much as Snipe against certain monsters.
Snipe is better for lower affinity weapons, whereas heart is better with higher affinity.
I understand he was already talking about the 'large' monster type, but my experiences using heart and snipe, the only time that I wished I wasn't using snipe was when I would have wanted to use another weapon altogether. With heart, there has had been plenty of times where I've lamented that the HBG I was using had heart instead of snipe.
I might be giving the impression that I think snipe is the superior one, and that's not my intention. My intention is to show that it's much closer than a lot of videos out there say it is.
Yeah, I understand that WS might deal more damage in the long run (especially on larger monsters), but NEEDS MORE DAKKA! It just feels so powerful to unload a full 30 seconds of gatling fire into a fallen monster's face.
Burst fire is a way bigger factor than you give it credit for with elemental ammo types you can wreck some monsters
As a full time HH user, I would personally recommend a HH user to try out the Heavy Bowgun. Both guns are fun, but the HH is also a hard hitting weapon, not just support. But thanks for the video. And great explenation. Now I'm certain of what my second weapon will be.

LBG: Smaller clip, more recoil, quicker reload. Meaning you spend more time immobilised between shots, but less time during reloads.
HBG: Bigger clip, less recoil, slower reload, which is the opposite to LBG.
If you are good at picking out time windows for reloading then HBG is better, if you want to be able to move around relatively often you should pick LBG.
HBG is easy to fix with reload mods, LBG requires recoil mods but also clip size skill to make it more like the HBG.
I started the game out with the HBG. About a month later and different weapons familiarity, when I found the LBG, I was blown away by its versatility and agility...LBG for the win. Also, I subbed. Great content guy

Theoretically, their playstyle determines their output where Lbg has more mobility to evade thus dishing out damage in intervals between attacks
while Hbg has big ammo reserves and long animations meaning they rely on doubling down on massive damage in a short period to match dps or risk getting hit (needing more street smarts of knowing monsters)
Means Lbg works with everyone really but usually works better with the same playstyles evaders who can handle themselves (LS, SnS, Bow, IG, DB, GL, CB)
HBG works better with disablers or tanks to draw out aggro (unless ur the tank but another tank is also good)-- Lance, Hammer, HH, SnS, CB
And usually Lbg shines on Elemental ammo while Hbg works best with the niche Spread or Pierce
I think comparing 2 equal true damage values is not the correct way to go, so I took bone-, ore- and nergigante-path of hbg and lbg to get the true damage values of each last weapon in its path. Interestingly the hbg was inferior in true damage value by 10 points in each path. I do not have created the weapons yet for field testing, but I would consider the hbg weaker per hit on average in the endgame.

I think a better damage comparison for damage would be to compare Ammo type 3 DPS throughout a fight... it may give same results but I have never tested either... larger clip size should yield more DPS throughout the fight would be my guess... my opinion on damage difference is that LBG fast consistent damage due to mobility and HBG is harder hitting burst damage due to access to cluster ammo, wyvern fire, wyvernsnipe, and wyvernheart
idk i've used both plenty and it's so particular to each model you really just need to feel it out and build accordingly. learn what the gun shoots well with then double down skills that make those ammos more effective. as far as dps is concerned you're not wrong really lbg is constant low pressure and HBG is short bursts of big damage.
I like both though the hbg is more satisfying to use the 'x-factor' as he called it is the reason for that... wyvern blast is so situational whereas wyvern heart and snipe are great for whenever.

Well a lot of heavy bow guns have little to no deviation. With some attachments it even can reduce recoil on standard ammo tipes to allow consecutive precise hits with the ability to block s d ether snipe or daka daka like a shoota boyz squad.

Because it's a comparison and not a review? And the reload speeds and deviaton it's not comparable. Most of heavy and light bowguns have differents times. Is not like LBG have a fast reload because they are tiny, some LBG have a lot of reload time and some of HBG have the same issue, it depends on what kind of ammo use.
Bulwark charm + 3 shield on HBG = you get lance's blocking power. It's cray cray.
My favorite part was watching you take 6 or 7 seconds to select your barrel bombs.
I'm not sure what you would compare the bow to. The game pairs it with kinsect glaive but they aren't really similar. I guess you can compare it to the bowguns but they're also pretty different. One thing i do want to know is iron bow tree vs bone bow tree. Bone has higher damage and seemingly no drawbacks with no sharpness to balance it. The coatings, fire speed, recoil, affinity all seem about the same.
Having played a little of both I have to say that I personally prefer the light bowgun. Just generally the handling feels a lot better and I am a bit of a sucker for status effects anyways (the exhaust lv. 1 burst fire on the Odogaron LBG is just godlike). I think the LBG also just does a better job at utilizing the less expensive ammo types, the lv. 1 stuff and normal shots whereas the best heavy bowgun builds currently out are about explosive, especially cluster shots and wyvern which are very limited in their capacity. It just feels nince not having to craft ammo on the go all the time.
I personally like to use the light bowgun just because I play solo and I need to dodge a lot while fighting and its just great because you have more mobility to dodge attacks and the mines are a pretty good thing too because they do decent dmg to the monster once you set them up in a point and lead the monster their and shoot the mines so they explode and it usualy does really good dmg while you keep shooting them mines so they explode and honestly its just a good weapon to use if anyone is looking for something good that doesnt require you to get close that much of the time
I made a gunner build and man it feels amazing to cause so much damage while barly being hit
It's better for me to use light bowgun cuz I often solo and yes, I am not the best at positioning so I need as much mobility as I can get. I also don't mind fighting for long time, those gun fire sound give me eargasm.

HBG is fine at soloing, though. Shield+Spread 3+Impact Mantle=Dead Things Fast. ;)
I know the heavy bowgun has a good distance when dodging but as I got used to using the weapon, in the end I no longer dodge anymore, cuz the shield is OP.
HBG also has less base recoil

Hbg shield doesn't have to be ads. Just weapon out and facing monster. Saved my life more than a few times when my controller has died.

He was correct I came from a hh background and switched to the lbg I absolutely adore the lbg the support options are great even more so than the hh and I love to be able to help out my team

You do not have to aim down sights to block with the shield.
Just be looking in the direction of the monsters attack, this is important for cluster ammo since instead of aiming down sights, it goes into a mortal stance.
HBG, but I still like the LBG for occasional solo missions. But HBG for the win on multiplayer.

Three videos that are all a tie? This is looking a bit like pandering, the videos are good but some of them really seemed like they had a clear winner that you didn't give them in the interests of keeping it equal. For example: the special moves are a big point in the HBG's favour.
Jahred Harrison i think hes helping us decide who we think the winner is . Since were are the ones who decide to play what we play despite flaws n pros i think. I just think Monster hunter, designed every weapon to be equally good. Thing is, whats "best" i think that falls under how an individual play's, and what weapon compliments his/her's play style.

I prefer the lbg special. Plant 3 on a down monster's head . Or place and get a monster to charge. Hbg chain gun is to slow and situationa, not to mention recoil . Snipe is nice for long monsters but not short/small monsters. But I will say hbg cluster bomb is king!
If you had to ADS for shield I wouldn’t use it. If your ALWAYS ADSing for shield on HBG you will mistaking do so with cluster equipped at some point (which drops your shield) resulting in a visit from the cart cats! Simply facing in the direction of the attack with a shielded Bowgun unsheathed will block! That being said a bowgun shield is slim for block zone, using ADS will effectively aim your 90 degree block zone. leaving your weapon down in auto block can give time for ammo/item crafting, catch a stray hit while cycling your item wheel or even allow time to send messages and use the pause menu.
They move the active LBG skill (machine gun) to HBG's right click with longer duration buff. LBG skill ( Jump and mine) are nerfed via erasing the escape movement

Besides the switch axe ultimate and greatsword charge attacks hbg wyvernheart is one of the most satisfying and badass skills in this game/any other game

So you can't fire while crouching or just does nothing special?
Crouching fire provides max. of 25 - 30 ammo of specific ammo type each movement. Use it on a Status effect build can cripple monsters ez. And don't forget the Split ammo crouching fire which is op.
I'm not sure what you meant by that. Is crouching fire similar to using wyvernheart?
No, not quite. Crouching Fire was HBG's special mechanic in previous games. Though unless I'm mistaken, it sadly only existed in 4U, Generations (Cross, in Japan), and the JP-exclusive "Double-Cross".
Each HBG had a different list of compatible ammo types, similar to the LBG Burst Fire ability. But instead what it did was you could press a button combo to go into a special stance, with the bowgun planted to the ground and your character kneeling next to it. While in the stance you would be unable to move aside from rotating around to aim, but in exchange you would get a MASSIVE increase to magazine size and reduction to recoil (which translates to faster fire rate) with those particular ammo types. We're talking certain bowguns temporarily having upwards of 30 round magazines for the lighter ammo (Normal, elemental, etc), and sometimes even 10+ for the heavier stuff like status rounds.
Also the increased fire rate meant you could unload those massive magazines VERY quickly. Even against the largest and toughest monsters, a high tier HBG could riddle them with statuses, blow up every breakable part with Crag and Cluster rounds, or pump out enough damage to send them running, all in very little time. Whereas LBG has always been a tool for mobility and efficiency, HBG defined itself as the option for when you wanted to toss both of those things out the window and unleash as much carnage as possible, as fast as possible, regardless of the cost.
Unfortunately the mechanic was taken back out in MHW, probably because they wanted the game as a whole to be more mobile. Some of the other changes they made, like the Wyvernheart/Wyvernsnipe, the ability to move while firing (even if slowly), the longer roll distance, and others are all still nice additions, don't get me wrong. But Crouching Fire was a very flavorful bit of risk vs reward gameplay that really set the good apart from the great. The "Giant Death Turret Mode" will always have a place in the hearts of HBG fans

Wyvernsnipe meanwhile doesn't really fit with the HBG. Wouldn't it make more sense for the LBG to have that? Seeing as it's the "rifle" as opposed to the anti-tank rifle or whatever the HBG should be considered to be. Mine placing seems extremely random to have as a LBG ability.

Kinda wish capcom would make it an option to change the weapons to their true damage.
Also that use to be true. Light bowgun use to do less damage. And heavy use to do more. The trade off was that light had rapid in way more ammo types. (Pierce use to have rapid fire and so did all the ailment shots) while heavy use to have siege mode. Load way more bullets and shoots faster with even less recoil. Made getting a lot of damage out pretty fast. But world changed that.

HBG has way bigger bursts though, but yeah, it dosent make sense.
the damage per shot with the same ammo might be the same but if you look at spread 3 on a HBG and a LBG the HBG has a larger clip, less recoil, and faster reload for a higher tier ammo type. All that means far more shots over a fight than the same LBG. with recoil 4+ on a LBG you get one shot to the recoil 1 or 2 HBG's two or three shots. The dps is totally in favor of the HBG and that's without taking into account wyvern ammo and cluster bombs.
But cluster bomb.
A fart you shouldn't have trusted funny you say HBG out damages when one word pretty much blows all of that out of the water. Affinity. Like dual blades compare to a great sword, sure you can shoot faster, but it doesn’t mean anything if one of my shots does as much damage as two or three of yours.

I'm not that experienced mhw player but I've never heard of burst fire, how do you do it and is it depending on the gun? Like carapace or anjanath
The playstyles of both weapons are so different you can't really make a fair comparison between the two. In order to compare both weapons you need to find a playstyle that fits both weapons respectively, Like spread shotgun, both weapons have different ways to utilize this ammo, and each have their own benefits. Otherwise, a comparison these two like this is kinda niche. They are different weapons lol
Fun fact: You actually do not need to ADS to block with the HBG

I'm a Heavy-user for life and just can't seem to nail down the LBG. That said, my brothers and sisters that use the smaller gun have my respect all the same. In the end we hope for the same thing - to put many holes in big frikkin monsters.
I prefer the heavy bowgun cause it reminds me of an old mmorpg game that I used to love, and of course VS weaponsfrom LP2.

Personally, I came from using the Insect Glaive, Dual Blades and Charge Blade and find myself using both about equally, with the big thing putting LBG over HBG at the moment is that I don’t have a good HBG while I do have a good LBG for my playstyle. Still looking for a good HBG for me personally, but it’s a process, what with all the different ammo types I have to sort through
I pull out the LBG I am a CB main or sometimes insect glaive and will use LBG to get past annoying monsters lol

I want to switch to a HBG at the moment but I'm really confused by all the ammo types and don't know where to look up the possible ammo for my HBG.

If you're on ps4 press R2 a few times on any HBG and it'll scroll over to a page displaying what ammo any bowgun can use. A good HBG would be the Kadachi lion.

Honestly you should have given damage to the HBG, the damage of the ammo types might be similar but the HBG usually has faster reload speed and less recoil so there is less down time between shots

really I only came here to learn the difference tbh XD from an outside perspective when you're just picking up the demo for the game, aka Rise, you pick the heavy bowgun and it does like 30 or so damage, and then the light bowgun does like fuck all, it really just feels like the heavy bowgun is just better cos it does moor durmage. yet according to here when considering investing/maining a ranged weapon cos I love bows usually. it appears that actually theres a LOT to consider when it comes to picking which one to go with and how I wanna play. in actuality despite first impressions theres many advantages and disadvantages to each that I need to feel out and think about. I learned a lot.
