- New Balance Fresh Foam X Hierro v8 full review. About a month ago I took the New Balance Fresh Foam x Hierro v8 out for its first run around a very wet and muddy Tehidy Woods. If I'm honest, this shoe has never really been on my trail running radar, but I actually enjoyed how it felt on that first run. Since then I've run a good 80+ miles in the shoes so I thought it was about time we gave you guys a full in-depth review. Check out the video to find out if the Hierro v8 has continued to impress.
Thanks for watching, we'll see you in the next video and as always - stay safe and keep on running!

Good to hear NB are making their shoes increasingly more sustainable. I have the previous release of the Hierro and have run in them almost exclusively since September and they’ve been really comfortable and are wearing well. If I need to replace them
It’s good to hear the updated version are good too.
The v7s are a great all around shoe. I also use them to do yard work around the house . Climb up things .
They are those shoes that can do it all
Thanks Loyd, I've just bough a pair in Dark Olivine. I went up a size and went for the extra wide version. They're so comfortable it's untrue. I'm very impressed with them, especially the grip the rubber on the sole is extremely sticky. It's also worth mentioning that foam is much softer in the heal than the toe. Apparently the midsole is deliberately manufactured this way to be denser further towards the front and it's really noticeable. Very forgiving for heal striking but surprisingly stable at the toe off. They put a smile on my face every time I lace them up and take them out. Would highly recommend. Surprised more channels aren't raving about them. Well done for getting the full review out ahead of the rest.
Good review!!!
Thanks Rob, glad you enjoyed the video and thanks for watching 🙏🙂
Good afternoon. Thanks for what you do. Like to Run4adventure. Have a nice day.
Cheers Manuel, have a great day 😁
I've had good luck with the V6 and v7 but something about the V8 feels off. Lockdown feels so poor I won't even run in them. Opted for the New Balance Summit Unknown v4 instead.
Got a Saucony Xodus Ultra 3 instead. It's quite different to the Xodus 2, overall I like it even more.
Thanks for doing this video Loyd! New Balance is about the only brand doing trail shoes wide enough for me, so it's really valuable to know how these are doing for you.
Any plans to have a look at the New Balance FuelCell Venym? I don't think it's going to come to Canada for me, but I'm still really interested in what they've done with it.
I have the Venym and its absolutely brilliant. Fit is perfect, midsole better than perfect and a decent grip. Upper is nice and secure around the mid foot and the toe box is wide and comfortable. The tongue is a bit thin and short and for me the only slight negative. Outsole is a bit noisy on hard ground but not a problem and grip is fine in the woods and on paths. For me the shoe of the year so far.
I’ll see what I can do 👍
Shoe looks nice but I prefer the lugs of the hierro 7 they were thicker and more pronounced like on the more trail v3 which I love bother the hierro 7 and more trail v3
Hi! Thank you for yet another great review. Can you make a video around good shoes that tackles road and trail equally good and with lots of cushioning?
I find it so hard to find a shoe that I can use for in and out of the forest roads (non technical) that can handle 20+ kms. (meaning not pegasus trail)
I tend to use a road shoe, but I would really love some just 3mm lugs that doesnt give a poor feeling on the roads.
Dream would be a superblast or endorphin speed with just a bit of lugs.
Saucony endorphin trail?
The north face vectiv pro 2 feel like the Superblast, similar fit, wide sole also, but with 3 mm lugs
Adidas terrex speed ultra 👌🏻
There's quite a lot of shoes with 3mm lugs and decent foams... It's going to have a lot to do with your foot shape.
Personally I'm loving the merrell morphlites for my slightly offroad adventures. I call them my "gravel shoes" because they are squishy and bouncy and absorb all of the shock from hard roads and they really do a good job of absorbing stones and larger gravel chunks even though I don't think it has a rock plate. Though it does have a pretty springy shank of some kind. Also glides along on roads. And has surprisingly good grip when wet.
ua-cam.com/video/nZWh1hKhafU/v-deo.html
Or the merrell nova 3, which is a pretty good shoe with vibram rubber, it's kind of a toned down version of the agility peak 5, 4mm lugs and they go all around the edge so it's a lot smoother on the hard stuff.
Or you might look at something like the hoka gaviota, it doesn't have "lugs" but it has very deep grooves that effectively work like channels in a tire and gives you 12 large lugs that can dig into some mud if you need it. Personally I think it feels like driving on square wheels, but a lot of people like it.
And most brands have a "road to trail" shoe like the hoka challenger or the altra outroad, asics gel venture, or the novablast which is essentially a superblast with a luggier outsole.
Hope that helps!
Like the comments suggest, the Saucony Endorphin Edge would be worth a closer look. As would the adidas Terrex Agravic Speed that I’ve just tested on the channel 👍
Something to note, on the larger sizes (US 13) they don't have half sizes and they are VERY NARROW for some reason. And the 14 is just way too long for me. Though it was a decent width.
Could have just been that pair, the store only had the one in a 13
Hierro v8 or trabuco 11/12 ??
I've got the hierro v6 and the more trail v3 and both are great. Very interested in the new balance venym - looks like a rebel v4 for the trails. Are you going to test that one?
I’ll see what I can do 🤔 I’ve been asked this question a few times 👍
Maybe you can add durometer for testing the hardness of the shoes foam 🙏. So, the hardness of the foam is a bit standarized for comparison, not only basically on feeling or looking.
I don't actually see the point in the durometer as so many brands are now wrapping their soft foam inside a firmer foam for stability.
I’m not sure that would tell you a lot, it obviously comes down to how it feels underfoot. I’ve had shoes that feel quite firm when you push into the foam and then you put running weight through them and they run a lot softer 👍
4:10 what's the shoe in the bottom-right with the blue sole? I like the look of the more aggressive lugs on that one.
It’s the New Balance Summit Unknown, there’s a review on the channel 👍😁
@@Run4Adventure Thanks a lot!
@@carsons5750 no worries 👍
Wide version is also available in Europe!
US has 4 width options. UK and Europe have 2; standard and 2E width.
what shoe would you prefer; the hierro v8 or the Nike Wildhorse 8? and why?
I think I’d go for the HIERRO v8 because it’s lighter. The Wildhorse is a comfortable shoe but it is quite heavy 👍
Looks like a great shoe that competes against some amazing offerings at that price point. For the same price, I think the Salomon Genesis is a better shoe (I say this without having run in the Hierro v8).
I definitely prefer the feel of the HIERRO V8 compared to the Salomon Genesis Chad, as gas as a workhorse comfortable trail shoe goes 👍
Based on your experience, is this also good for running/walking on pavement? Urban environments. Thanks
The NB shoe is actually very comfortable on pavements. No only thing to consider is you’ll wear down the outsole quicker running them on the hard stuff 👍
Question given your experience: I bought the saucony ultra 2 based on your review, but the pointy toolbox cause my pinky toes to go numb. Any suggestions for a similar trail shoe but with a more roomy toebox (but with the same width midfoot)? Thanks!!
Inov8 Trailfly speed or normal Trailfly are a good shout in a wide fit. I’d go up half a size though
@@jimjamthebananaman1 I suspect then they will be too wide in my midfoot which is quite narrow…also I think the cushion on them is pretty minimal compared to the Ultra
You can check brooks catamount 3
The new TRAILFLY is actually pretty narrow at the wide foot Sean. I’d say it’s not quite as cushioned as the Xodus Ultra 2 but it’s still comfortable. There’s a review of the new TRAILFLY on the channel, it might be worth checking out 👍
@@Run4Adventure thanks mate!!
If you had to pick between the V8 or Terrex Speed Loyd?
To be fair Paul they are completely different shoes! The HIERRO v8 is built for steady comfortable miles. The adidas Terrex Agravic Speed is for racing or quicker training sessions. It really depends what you’re after? 🤔
@@Run4Adventure Just in the overall comfort department mate? I love the Adidas midsole (I have the Speed Ultra) but wanting something to use for those general training miles bit want something comfy as the rocker in the Speed Ultra is brutal
@@paulmulks I think the HIERRO is pretty good at soaking up steady training miles. I just throw them on and go running and I don’t really give the shoe a lot of thought 👍
Hi, are they waterproof?
I would have definitely mentioned it if the shoes were waterproof Tommy 👍
This pair are not waterproof but the previous version, the HIERRO v7 does come in a waterproof option 🙂
Hope this helps and thanks for watching.
Ignore Loyd’s comments about the More Trail V3. 😁 They are awesome. I just don’t understand the ground feel concept and they are so wide that stability is no issue.
Don’t ignore my comments about the More Trail V3, on technical trails they are dangerous! 😮
everyone is different. I don't understand how people can run in super high stack shoes and all that foam under their feet 😅.
But I'm someone that always keep a barefoot sandal in my rotation, so what may feel good for someone doesn't always translate the same to others.
Saying they are dangerous on technical terrain is hilarious
@@Levi_Allen If you’re trying to move at a good pace on more technical trails it’s very easy to catch a rock or roll your ankle and that can be pretty dangerous Levi 👍
If you fall hard or sprain your ankle and you’re in a remote location on the trails, it’s not the best situation 🤔
runners these days have this fixation on these crazy soft stack shoes, i just don't get it. for me that's like threading a needle with mittens on.
Whenever I try on new balance they feel too squishy.
Some of there shoes are very soft 👍
More trail v3 with less stack..... Easy review
I did actually say the in the review? 🤔
