- Hey! Here's my review of the New Balance Hierro v7, I'm a big fan! if you have any questions just let me know in the comments, I try to respond to everyone.

The flap in the back helps keep debris from flicking up to the back of your shoe/leg during your stride.
I run the marathon de sables a 250km run through Sahara desert with the v6. They were durable and didnt disappointed me. Best trail shoe in my opinion :)

Picked up a pair at ridiculous sale price after seeing this review and can say his review is right on! Love the room in toe box fits my wider forefoot just right. Traction is superb !!! Yes triple explanation marks . Midsole not super cushy nor is it super hard , really perfect. If they keep this awesomeness I will try again. I didn’t like 1080 v12 midsole durability but this feels a little better denser bouncier less likely to die in 150 miles . it is a warm upper . I saw reports of upper durability issues, no issues for me in early miles …

I have 4 pairs of the Hierro V6. I run in them all the time. They are the best road to trail, hiking shoe I've ever worn. The fresh foam x is super cushioned. These shoes are super versatile, wear them to the beach, the gym, work, everyday casual, hike in them, run roads in them, trails in them. NB really nailed it with the Hierros. The V7 sole is more aggressive. It looks alot like my Brooks cascadia 16's outsole, not a bad thin, it just makes the hierro V7, a better wet/mud/snow trail runner. If you get the gore tex version, these could really be a 12 month running shoe. I trimmed off the heel lip with a utility knife, it really serves no purpose imo the shoes look better now without it. Love these new ones so much. Totally agree with your review. Love that space for toe splay. And that wrinkle in the toe is happening in mine too. Hope it holds up. I don't understand the finn either ...things it creates more mud splashing up the back of my legs.
Yes for sure! I’m still loving this sneaker overall.
The don is to extend the foot area and traction for muddy conditions.
I love these specially the color. I ordered mine as soon as they came out.

NB always had funky colors on the Hierros....very multi-color designs. My favorites are the black timberwolf, the green/black/blue combo looks really basic ,but for a hiking trail shoe, it just works imo......Also have the blue wave/habernero and the blue yellow just looks great!

It's somewhat the tread pattern, but the addition of Vibram Megagrip is huge. That compound is magic!

The little flap at the back of the sole is VERY helpful, especially when going down steep terrain - at least for me 🤷♂️

I just tried in store both the V6 and V7 and after half an hour of trying, I decided to go home with the V6 because my upturned toe was a bit uncomfortable in V7 and the foot arch felt better supported by V6. However I hesitated a lot because the sole grip is amazing on V7, huge improvement over the V6, and the heel felt more comfortable. Of all the shoes they had in store, the Hierros were the best suited to transition from going out to going away, asphalt to trail to off trail. Which may seem trivial but when going on vacation I will only take one pair of sandals and one pair of all-purpose shoes. So I personally chose comfort over stability on rocks, your choice depends on your use cases. Bonus: The vendor showed me how to use those double holes at the top of all sneakers to make a better fit in case I needed it (that's why I go in store and never order shoes online :D).

Did the V6 and the V7 fit exactly the same size wise??? I also prefer the looks of the V6 but only have the option to try the newer version on! Please help!!!

In New Balance 880s, 10.5 extra wide (4E) feels good and fits right. In Brooks Cascadia version 15 size 10 2E is a good fit though snug mid-foot.
I'm going to try this shoe in 10.5 extra wide 4E. My use is dirt trails and pavement, and perhaps at the gym if it works out ok for that use. I almost decided on Cascadia v16 10.5 2E since they are on sale for $100 right now, but ready to try a shoe that may be a bit softer under foot. I only walk, no running due to ankle injury. 5 miles per day average.
Sounds like a good choice for you.

I couldn’t find that either, they are both 8mm drops so I feel like the stack is very similar if not identical.
Hi Colin, Do you think these will hold up over long distances? I currently have the Speedgoat 4 myself and anything over 20k + gets super uncomfortable. I am planning my first 50k in these and hoping they will go the distance. I previously had the v6 before the SG4 and had no issues.
Will def hold up for a 50k in my opinion, still wish there was a little more cushion in the forefoot but I think it will be fine for that distance.
Great insights! How do you think the fresh foam x compares to peg 4 react?
I feel like fresh foam x is a little more dense in a good way, not as super soft feeling as the react in the peg trail 4’s. FFX feels like it would last longer and not bottom out as quickly.
Super comfy and soft shoe. traction - amazing. But lasted 300.000 steps and whole sole is off (rocky terrain / city) and the mesh broke. NB told me Guarantee is not working in this case as I supposedly wrongly chose sizes (I definitely had a good size for my feet, otherwise imagine 300k steps XD). Good shoe but will last moments.
I’m getting into trail running and need a new pair of shoes with 0 clue on anything about what makes them good. Gonna go with these but if you could recommend anything I’d be thankful. My trail isn’t very harsh, can be rocky a bit but not much mud or water.
I think these would be a great choice, can take these on easy trails or tougher trails, could even run some road in these I would say.
How would these be as an everyday trainer/gym shoe? Because I'm tall and heavy I want something with a bit more cushioning for my knees but also with a durable sole because I have worn through previous soles on shoes very fast especially ones with pertruding tread. Would the 880 or 1080v12 be better options for general use?
I would think the 1080v12 sounds like a better fit for a everyday trainer and gym shoe, the Hierro has significant protruding lugs, so you may wear through those quickly, the 1080’s would have a flatter outsole.
U can half size down for snug fit not tight just no dead space
Thanks for the great review! Planning to get those mainly for hiking and some light running. How are they regarding breathability? They say V6s are poor in breathability, do you think those are better?
not the best, I found they soaked up and held onto water pretty good, but definitely not the worst breathability I've tried! So yea I think they are a little better than V5, I didn't try the V6.

I really liked the Salomon Pulsar Trail Pro’s for lightweight breathability.

I have gotten that heel flap caught in between rocks when going downhill. It didn't make me fall but did catch me off-guard, which could cause a fall. I wish they'd get rid of it, too. Love the shoe otherwise!

@swiftcolin I wanted to do that - I just ordered a new pair - but was afraid it would damage the sole, causing it to prematurely crack (or whatever.) Did it work out them?
That’s a good call actually, I’m not sure if it affected his outsole
The little back tongue is to help you remove the shoes when your shoes are really muddy

Hi, I'm confused between buying this or 1080 v12. Tried both of them. Hierro has better traction but 1080s are good with upper material which is stretchy and more breathable, also the tongue is better. My purpose for buying is for cricket so most of the time i would use it on grounds and maybe few off road runs - so I'm tilting more towards buying hierro v7. Could you please suggest me which one should i pick? Thanks!
Sounds like the extra traction on the Hierro would benefit your activities.
goretex v6 best shoes ive ever had. keen as for the goretex v7

Thanks for the in-depth review! This really helped understanding the difference between v6 and v7. I'm still confused whether I should go for the extra cushioning of the v6, or the better traction of the v7. What would you recommend? I run mostly on hard surfaces, but also go on trails and hiking so was looking for a shoe that can handle both. Should the lighter cushioning on v7 forefoot be a deal breaker?
I personally prefer the v7 but if you don’t need the traction and lighter weight, and you could get the v6 on sale, maybe the v6? I’d still go v7 though.

Hi from Brazil...i saw a spanish review yesterday and they said that V7 is not so confortable like V6 ...V 6 has more cushioning than v7 ...they said the V7 you feel de rocks under your feet ....Is it real ? ....i will use it just for raining days in the city ,no trails ...wich one is better v6 or v7 ?
I think V7 is much better than the V5, but I never actually ran in the V6

Really wanna try those! Trying not to spend as much on sneakers though, this season I’m planning on only picking up 3 shoes: Adidas Terrex Agravic Speed (Non Plated), Nike Zegama 2, and the Speedgoat 6. Def will review all three.
I usually wear Asics Trabuco size US 9.5. I tried in the Hierro and it seemed tight. The store recommended i go to a US 10. Thoughts.
I went with US 10.5 which is TTS for me and that worked for my foot
Hey Colin, I commented on your Speedgoat 5 video. Since then I'm up over 200 miles in the shoes and I feel the outsole has flattened out. I like the shoe as it broke in more, but just something about it is making me look elsewhere. I'm still waiting for the Mafate Speed 4 to come out. Long time Hoka guy, but....
I looked at the Hierro v 7 and the the New Balance Fresh Foam X More Trail V2. Settled on the FFX V2, hoping it was like the SG 2-4. Just a review of it so far. Very beefy, better toe box than the SG's more room and still secure. The Vibram outsole is grippy and stable, it's starting to soften up a bit. Only downside is the weight, at least 1 ounce more than the old SG. It feels like it could be a 100 mile shoe, but seems a bit heavy. The tongue seems to slide to the outside of the shoe, not an issue, I might put a stitch or 2 on the inside. I'll continue to break it in and do 20+ mile runs when it cools down here in FL. Have not had chance to run gnarly mountain terrain, but Vibram grip great. I'll use it as a heavier trainer- 4mm drop.
Ok now I wanted to comment on the Hierro 7. I agree with you about the softness sort of like the Speedgoat, but a bit more firm in the midfoot. I like how it hit and planted as you ran, but thought it could use a bit more cushion in the forefoot. I agree with you about adding more to make it a 4mm drop. I guess the question I have is do you think it would be good 50+ mile shoe? I thought it was more of shorter distance racer, very light weight. I did not buy it, just did run around. I think you could definitely do a 50 miler in the Hierro V7’s, not as much cush as the SG, but definitely enough to handle a 50 miler imo, and a more accommodating toe box helps too. Beyond a 50 miler might bit a little iffy though!
I have high hopes for the Nike ZoomX Zegama, but Nikes traction is never any good, especially compared to a vibram outsole.

I've just bought some of these primarily for walking my daily lunchtime walks which is half tarmac, half grass/dirt/mud/gravel and I'm awaiting arrival - do you think they make a good walking trainer for my intended use?

Speedgoat 4 is my favourite, it has a little more cushion and a 4mm drop, the hierro would accommodate wider feet better though.
@@swiftcolin You were right. I ordered SG4 wide yet don’t feel wide at all. I’ve heard running shoes shouldn’t take time to “wear in” and should feel perfect the moment you try them on. I didn’t think it would be this “wide” 😪

Sometimes it’s hard to find the right shoe for you! Always good to order form somewhere with a good return policy.
After 3 months use of the V6 my thoughts are: Whilst these are very comfortable, they are already leaking at both toes. I complained to New Balance given that only used for 3 months intermittently and just for walking the dog... The response was quite shocking... I received this from the Quality Care Team: "the indicated area is subject to constant bending and stretching when walking, and does so with every step, so you can imagine that after a certain amount of use the fabric loosens and may lose its water-resistant properties" The response also included a comment that this might be the "heat difference can make your feet feel wet, however, this is due to condensation because of the temperature difference, making it feel like water is entering through the mesh, when it really isn't" Plain and simple - these leak... I personally suspect it may be an isolated instance with these shoes but NB do not wish to replace(for the reasons quoted) I cannot reccomend the product and what is worse is that the customer service follow up from NB does not consider this an issue nor does it accept there may have been a manufacturing fault... I know and use Gore Tex products - for footwear...Nike, Adidas and Meindl footwear and have never encountered this issue. What a waste of £160. . By all means trust Gore Tex (I do) but I have little to no faith in New Balance competence in incorporating within their footwear - AS IT LEAKS AFTER 3 MONTHS... Which they either deny or state that constant stretching and bending means the fabric loses water proof properties - what else do you do with feet in shoes! If you're looking for waterproof footwear then would suggest Nike Pegasus Trail which has the same Gore Tex technology and these remain waterproof after over 9 months. Also Adidas Terrex and Meindl are fantastic - their customer service is great too. I mailed NB CEO and did not receive a response.

Thats awful....especially if it is a gore tex model. I found the Hierro's to be quite breathable, so yes they have tiny holes that leak water.......but that should never happen with gore tex!
I suppose you could try waterproofing them with a Nikwax product.

hi. good video. i saw this shoe in my local new balance shoe store. im not sure if its the v7 or older version. how do i know if its the v7 version. thank you.
The 6’s have a little mountain graphic on the side right underneath the ankle bone, the 7’s do not.
Would you recommend this for everyday use, whether it be for just walking, hiking and etc. If not could you recommend something else?

Hi everyone 👋 Can someone please tell me how this shoe handles rain and wet gras, mud, etc? Do your feet get wet fast? I know there is a gore tex version but this is not available in "wide" here in Germany. Thank you so much
Feet definitely get wet if it’s wet out, they handle wet conditions well, not sure about grass though, and could be better in mud if lug depth was deeper, but still not bad.
Just bought a pair and on the first use I noticed the upper instep folding flat and touching my foot. Has this eased for you?
Not sure what you mean by upper instep? I noticed the toe box folding down on to the top of my foot at first, not sure if that’s what you mean, but yea that seemed to break in quickly!
@@swiftcolin sorry the inside of the right foot at the point the overlay by the toe joins by the ball of the big toe 😂 bad description. But yes the same sort of area as you described but on the inside of the foot. Good to know it breaks in over time as I don’t want to have to return them as they are so comfortable.

They would be great for long walks.
I've cutting from every version of hierro that flap. The worse thing I've try when run because it makes littles rocks and sand jump into the shoe. And whiles I'm going down steps it is seriously dangerous. Even Hoka had something similar in a trakking model and don't recommend to using them going down steps. I'm sorry my ENglish

I’ve never ran in the ATR’s so I’m not sure, but I think they would both be good door to trail options.

I was not a fan of the SG5 so I’d go with the Hierro easily.
Shoes comfortable but very poor quality for trail running shoes. After a few weeks of use, white fibers start to come out of the shoes, which must be trimmed regularly so that it doesn't look like the shoes have a beard. In addition, the Toe Protection layer starts to peel off, but unfortunately New Balance does not see this as a problem and does not accept complaints. I strongly advise against buying this model.

I have the D version (regular width) and yes there’s a little space from my longest toe to the front of the toe box, these fit really well.

trails -yes, mountains-maybe. I like ankle support so I hike in boots, but you could if you were careful, but the toe protect area is thin and not much protection.

it's not quite true to size because of the toe protector. i guess it's better to get a half size bigger or even a whole
I found these to be true to size for me! But everyone’s foot is different.
Can you please do comparison of h7 and speedgoat 5
H7 has a wider toe box and the upper is more secure overall once you dial in the fit. The SG5 has more cushion in the forefoot and a narrower toebox, but the upper doesn’t feel as secure, especially on downhills.
@@swiftcolin thank you for your suggestion and one last question i actually want it shoe for hiking and i think the trail runner are best and i want durable one too which last long we have everytype of trail here in nepal from loose mud , loose rocks wet muds every type soo which would you suggest
I find Salomon to be durable, but I don’t find them as comfortable as hoka.
why dont u like hoka speed goat 5?
The upper is too stretchy and not secure enough for bombing downhills, just my opinion though. I tried to like it but I just don’t. Hoping the SG6 has a more secure feeling upper especially in the forefoot.
@@swiftcolin r these hierro v7 still ur main trail shoes? u tried the nb summit unkown v4? it has fuelcell so i assume its the more fun nimble shoe of the two

for sum reason when trying on trail shoes they give me a bit of heel slip even if it fits the same as road running shoes. hav tried the hierro/peregrine 13/xodus/speedgoat 5 and they all had the same problem

@io-rj6sk I wasn’t a fan of the Speedgoat 5, didn’t have heel slip issues in the hierro, and I haven’t tried the other two, my two go to trial shoes are the Speedgoat 4 and the Norda 001
La speedgoat 5 n'accroche pas grand chose, déçue, on en fait tout un plat. Mes caldera 5 accrochent bien mieux
100k is not a huge distance for a shoe, better said should not be a serious distance for any shoe :)

4:47 - your criticism of the water and the potential ripping is far too light. You must have gotten these for free or you must be marketing for NB because a REAL person who spent their own REAL money on shoes and it's already showing that much wear? I would think they would be far more critical than you are.
You're sort of tip toeing around carefully as if you're afraid of losing your contract with NB.
Did you pay for these with your own money or were they comp'd to you?
I wish I got sneakers for free! Unfortunately I’m not even close to having enough subs for any company to notice my videos, I pay for all my sneakers, but maybe you’re right that I should have been more critical, but they still haven’t ripped!
