The Secret to Maxing Carpentry with Life and Living | Project Zomboid

- Welcome back and today I'm going to teach you how to take advantage of the life & living channel. You've probably watched some project zomboid guides and they tell you to watch the life and living channel at 6, 12, and 18 to get some free experience in your skills, but they do not stress just how amazing that skill gain can be.
There's two thing you need to do to maximize your gains. First you need to pick traits to increase experience gain. Fast learner and +1 carpentry for example. By getting +1 in carpentry we also gain 75% increased experience gain that stacks with fast learner.
Second you need to read the skill books. The more of a skill book you read the higher the multiplier it gives to your experience in that skill. Higher level books give larger experience multipliers. You can only read the books at the proper skills levels, one book per two levels. That +1 to the skill gives you much needed breathing room as you only have a couple hours before the first carpentry show and you can still get to level 2 carpentry on that first day even if you don't have time to read or find the first skill book.
All you need to do is read the proper book, show up to watch the show, and let those experience gains flood in. Boom level 10 carpentry without even touching a hammer. Never grind carpentry on a long term character again.

Now my left ear knows how to max carpentry
I thought my head phones was broken lol
Oh damn, I only have my right earbud on
Please help, Need right ear to learn carpentry
I kept pausing and messing with my headphones and speaker connections. 😂
The right side of my body can build doors now lol
Now to teach my right ear how to max carpentry
i thought my right ear was broken, it was your mic xd
More like an exploit of the systems in place if you have the books (4-5 depending on occupation), fast reader, fast learner and carpentry tagged for bonus gains. That said maybe there's need to rebalance all non-combat skills because you don't need lvl 6 carpentry to build shoddy stairs or lvl 7 carpentry to build a big barrel with garbage bags in it.
I fully agree about the rebalance. The only reason these books with 16 times exp multipliers exist is because the skills are such a slog to grind.
I feel like all of the skills such as water barrels and stairs would be pushed much further down, probably skill level 3-5, when they start implementing the medieval-esque structures such as windmills. Man imagine doing all of that in multiplayer once it comes out and transforming the server into some kind of faction war
@@tpd1864blake overall I agree, the game could use non-combat skill redesign and boost of utility to skills like first aid.
Imo books shouldn't have an impact on xp gain from TV, it makes the early game very luck based and everyone does crazy min maxing. Then again, some essential stuff should be moved down to lower levels as well or characters with professions should have a little bit more skill points thrown in cause a lot of jobs now are really useless (tho I guess not useless for rp reasons)
They could get rid of books altogether and I wouldn’t care it’s just a tedious exploit. No one wants to sit and do nothing while playing a game, it’s bad game design if it wasn’t for time speed-up.
This idea came to my attention after multiple failed runs back to back. Started reading carpentry books as I was waiting for shows and I was like……I bet you can cheese this
in my play through with my friends
"why are you a cook now?"
"i watched gordan ramsey so im a cook now thats how this works"
Lol so funny
online university be like
Neo: I know carpenty
Morpheius: ...show me
Ret, I very much appreciate how you include the entire transcript for these shorts. Just wanted to say thanks for that.
I think this is pretty common knowledge
The problem is actually finding the proper books in time... not that easy. Also if you cheese your traits carpentry is not a good pick, at least I dont think so
As far as getting the books, you can spawn in rosewood and loot both the bookstore and school library in about 10 minutes real life time.
It is pretty cheesy.
if anyone has the same problem now, try starting out in Riverside. There is 3 libraries that you can fish for the books that you want. One is in the school, one is a bookstore on the main street and the third one is on the second floor of the community center near the river. Also the lockers in the community center often contain exercise equipment such as dumbbells and barbells.
It's much easier than looking for them in Muldraugh for example, since there is only one bookstore on the main street and nowhere else. You'd have to search through the houses which often don't have any books of value.
Yeah riverside is great. If you start in the suburbs just grab a TV, and book it for the school. It has baseball bats and helmets in the gym, food on the cafeteria, school bags in the lockers, everything you need for a good start. And yeah if its this easy to level carpentry you can see how useless putting starting levels into it is.
The Handy trait buffs all of your carpentry constructions to have +100 hp and you get to build them just a little bit faster along with the xp boost. It also gives you an xp boost in maintenance which is extremely useful. I’d say it’s a great pick for traits regardless.
Oh absolutely. A lot of your time is 100% devoted to starting off good, finding gear, and looking for a safeplace.
Let us not forget the Helicopter event...
I've done this once. I got lucky with a rosewood spawn and got the book store, had volume 2, 3, 4, and 5.
Packed up a bunch of food and books the evening after the 1st show played and I got level 2.
Took the tv upstairs, along with a bunch of food. Spent the week reading and watching tv. Life and living for xp, new, for boredom, and pawtv for unhappiness when that started building up.
Level 10 carpentry by the time I left that house. Along with a good few levels in cooking, trapping, fishing, foraging, and farming.
Also VHS tapes are a thing. Carpentry has quite a few dedicated to it (the woodworking series and a few out of the survival series). So if the tv gets cut and THEN you want to learn carpentry (like yours truly) then its a half decent alternative.
my left ear loved this video
lol I was literally thinking the exact same thing, like word for word XD
The trick is getting the books, and not getting wrecked when trying to go to a school
No, your right headphone speaker isn't broken. Retanaru just likes to make us be the ones to suffer once in a while I guess 😂
Rest in Peace Right Ear was nice knowing you worked just a moment ago 😂😂😂
I’ve lived in that house so many times. It’s my go to temp safe house when I spawn in the Riverside bar
My left ear enjoyed that lecture
I didn’t have my left ear bud in and didn’t know anything was wrong until I checked the comments 💀
This how I max new characters
The odds of finding all 5 carpentry books and the time to read them during the days of TV shows is ......
I stopped rushing for the TV broadcasts. You can get VCRs and watch them at your leisure after you've found the skill books. This maximizes your XP gain (unless you start next to a school with quick reader)
1 hour not counting the time it takes to find the books or the time waiting for the show
the left hemisphere of my brain is now much smarter
thank god you spoke to my good ear
Carpentry 1 at start, fast learner and books - leveled up carpentry to 10 in 15 minutes by just disassembling furniture in neighborhood
mods that increase initial xp gain are very cool
the one i use gives an xp boost based on total skill levels (every level of skill combined) to determine your skill mult and its heavily configurable
true way to min max it is to completely ignore life and living and use the VHS tapes only once you have the books
Don't know if someone already tried this but is the fast reader trait worth it?
I've always choose slow reader to get "free points" but the time it takes to read those advanced books it's like a lot of time wasted that could be better used otherwise.
Your videos are great please make a video about the reader trait :)
Fast reader is good in multiplayer when you can't fast forward to speed up reading. In single player it might be used if you want to maximize exp gains from life and living episodes by reading books in the correct order as fast as possible.
Absolutely not and I would argue fast learner is bunk as well because it's only a 30% increase. It seems like a lot in game but it actually isn't and you'll regret picking such traits when you max your skills out and then it's totally useless. Get the traits that improve your character not your skills. Eagle eyed, keen hearing, graceful etc. Skill traits are for the birds man.
@@thinkinyblinko6666 most people never max out their characters though
It depends on your skill and play style. I have hundreds of hours played but haven’t even come close to fully maxing a character. Surviving isn’t the issue, I just get bored with the game after becoming self sufficient. For someone like me who is constantly starting new games, skill traits are great because I’m not going to be spending enough time on them to even come close to maxing. The faster I level, the better.
Total waste to put starting points in it. Carpentry is the easiest skill to level in the whole game. The fact you can hit 10 just off the TV shows how easy it is. Even if you miss every episode of the show, hit a single motel and disassemble the beds and you will get all the levels you need anyway.
Handy trait is great to have regardless if you’re cheesing carpentry or not.
You can hit 10 with TV shows IF you get starting points in carpentry because it gives you experience multipliers
@@spidey19355 it’s really not, 100hp to non wall constructions is completely useless.
@@dylanb2990I usually take Handy because the +1 to starting Maintenance is really nice; I use spears a lot and it makes a huge difference
Thank you the great tips. 💖
earned a new subscriber ;)
Now think about when you pick carpenter and have 125% xp boost +3 bonus levels and you have fast reader and you spawn in and you find a lvl 2,3,4 and 5 carpenter book at spawn. Then you can have a 5x book multiplyer +30© from fast leaner and 125% from carpenter... You can almost max out carpentry from just 4 episodes haha
So this last night, worked a charm
Left ear appreciates the tips
left ear only asmr
Lol
upload the right ear version please so i can give this a go
You can do the same With cooking and also get level 3/4 into fishing agriculture foraging and trapping
All in one breath wow!
What I did was to read the books and build ominous crosses
Basic game mechanic
"The Secret"
I highly recommend watching these at 75% speed :)
He's ruining his videos just to make YT shorts. I don't know what value content creators see in it, but it's bad for them, the content, and the viewers who have to watch it in a phone-sized resolution.
@@AlexTechietrue
when i watch life and living at 6, 12 or 18 it doesnt show anything anymore
Idk why but in game when I read book the levels never grow up and idk what to do
Then get bit 2 min later
Idk why it's a tip watching those shows during first week of play, I mean after a while of getting used of surviving, skills are harder to level up. It's better to watch the shows after leveling it up to 6 where it becomes very grindy
This was uploaded before the VHS tapes were a thing, you couldn’t wait back in the day and grind out the easy levels.
Laughs in six months later. I can't even watch TV
Retanaru is one of those slow talkers. Isn't it even faster?
Yeah, just find all 5 skill books before the first week is over.
so you are saying if you have all the books in place in order to watch every single episode? and how often is this actually going to happen? im guessing not often at all.
It's basically a little luck and 1 library/bookstore/post office trip. Of course you have to be good enough to walk to a library right on spawn, which is extremely easy with some practice (assuming default settings). There's also the part where you really don't gain anything past level 7 so there's no need for the masters book either, allowing you to miss an episode.
@@Retanaru ok, thanks. Im still new and trying to figure out how to spend time in the early game. it feels really bad to spend so much time to get to a tv with books several times every day when I still dont have basic tools and weapons.
@@jc6226 Now that VHS tapes exist I personally ignore the tv episodes. Work on my combat skills early when the zombies haven't hit peak and go collect the books and vhs tapes when I find a car/gas can.
The armchair carpenter
You can cheese it for sure but now survive long enough to utilize it. Zomboid has a funny way of spitting in your face.
Name of the leveling up skill mod?
Please give us more tips for project zomboid
Is xp popup a mod ?
This is why I disable Life and Living from my game. The fact that you can even get 2 levels from watching 3 or 4 shows is pretty bad design in my humble opinion. At that point you might as well start the game with 10 carpentry to skip the AFK grinding.
The overall skill system is a bad design,it really just about grind and grind
@@windflier1684 just like in rl
@@Literallyryangosling777 Yes, in real life, you keep shooting a shotgun over and over and you magically develop into a marksman with Rifles and Handguns.
Whats the mod for the level numbers to pop up?
I just edit my states for single player it's too tedious to level them. Multi though I'm all about it.
Woodcraft VHS are better and can br used after TV goes down
Carpentry is probably the easiest to levdl up normally with no exploits. Electrical and mechanics has to be the hardest. Especially all the combat skills if you count them. Wish they would rebalance the whole system, just feels so unbalanced
I’m deaf in my left ear lmao
With Book mod , i can max out in 15 minutes.
Dude..
Your mic?
Old videos suck
Not everyone have a good luck finding those books
I mean... at this point, you might as well use the cheat mod and just give yourself the levels.
Need more HVS
never says anything about the negative traits you would need to take
You don't need any. +1 carpentry from a class and read the books. That's it.
Good tip, but i think its just a bug and they will fix it in future updates
6-12-18.. 18 is 6 my dude
The way I only hear you in my left ear, gained you a subscriber 😂.
sorry bud, but your mic is broken
I cannot understand you, I’m partially deaf in my left ear.
People always enjoy talking about minor mistakes you made. Not matter how good you explained about increasing carpentry skills.
People like: ow you left ear my knee brain hurts.
You talk too fast
grub
UA-cam shorts have ruined tutorials. You have to speed talk your way through this and I have to watch it in a phone-size resolution. Just make normal videos, please.
I already did. ua-cam.com/video/DqxrbEIFK8Q/v-deo.html
Not trying to be a dick but is the secret...reading books that give you multipliers?
Cause...I'm pretty sure every person who's put more than 20 mins into PZ is aware. The issue is finding the books lmfao.
Way to suck the fun out of the game lol
Well.... that's getting nerfed now.
speak up
This game is so unrealistic! How could he learn so much without having any gender types classes?
HE WAS SO WRONG. You get 1 show per day. you can get 2 boxes and half with the carpentry perk without books. read second book get rest of box and part of 4th. thats second day. 3rd day no book ghet 5th box and part of 6th. 4th day get 6th full. if you dont do anything and no books you get 6 full boxes. guy full of crap.
He says you have to use the books. The books are essential. Hit a school or library day 1. But carpentry is easy to level so I dunno why you'd waste starting points on it.
And now you have video on PZ, 😀
How do you see xp gains like that
