In my area they did take out a paved road, and go back to a gravel road. The old road was so bad that they put up warning signs for a rough road, and reduced the speed limit to 35 from the original 50. The gravel road is a big improvement.

    • @daleolson7205

If the paved road was actually maintained, It would not have turned into total failure. My local main roads, they grind 2-3 inches off every 10 years and repave. Done in a couple days per mile. I understand the $ part of it though.

In a standard alternator there is a three phase rectifier. Its build by six Diodes.
Your bad signal shown by the pico-scope is caused by a bad phase of the rectifier.
Back in older days we were actually able to replace them but since money is more important than anything things habe changed.
A company does more likely sell a new alternator then a cheap diode set.
However with some messing there is still the possibility to replace them... but whats more difficult is, to get the housing together right again.
Most of the time they are glued together.
Thanks for your very cool and nice content ! 💪

I think I know what you are talking about regarding “doing everything”, and your statement about “focusing on what I do”....
However, i recall in your earlier videos, you talking about “work” slowly coming in, and it would take some time for the word to get
    out about you.
Well sir it appears that “ thee word” is now out...
Your are a prized commodity. You “can” do just about everything, and you do it well...
However you are probably right, in that you now have to establish to the customers, the core work that you do.
Great video, and as always it is great to get a visit from the “lovely assistant”... I dream of a visit such as this, by her to deliver me a cold adult beverage.
    Thank you sir.

A big congrats to Mrs. Wes!!!
I wonder if IL is like WA and the more ed hours a teacher has, the higher the pay? Some of my friends spent a summer working on there PHd. They didn’t sit for the PHd, because degrees don’t count, just hours of ed. I might be mixing up some details…
Once in a while we refer to the almost PHD’s as doctor first name. 😊

Kind of reminds me of farming, my Dad always bought used equipment, he was of Scottish heritage, we were in Western Canada . What a day was like you were lucky if what you needed started , then it was trouble shooting the smaller issues ! But once he put it into the shop in the winter and we had time to go through it we actually had simple reliable equipment! I enjoy your ability to troubleshoot and your depth of knowledge on controls! By the way in Alberta your wife brought you a “Barley Sandwich!”

I used to check alternators, when I didn't have a good load tester, by turning my voltmeter to AC voltage. If an alternator was putting AC out then the diodes were failing. I don't know if that still works on today's ecm controlled alternators, I've never tried it.

I knew the alternator in my 02 Silverado had a bad diode because driving down the road at night the lights would pulse.

The shop I work at we have the same system for cleaning. Leave it 'til tomorrow. No one's on the mood to clean when they want to go home, makes you clean hastily. In the morning you dedicate half an hour to sweep and clean; keeps the morale up for the day.

If anyone ever gets a noise like a squeaking/grasshopper from the cam alternator belt area it might be the alternator free wheel pulley about to fall off..which makes lots of melted rubber in the pulleys.

I guess I’ve taken living in the Toledo area for granted. Grew up In a Jeep family, first car was a 2000 XJ and had a few buddies that had jeeps. Any Jeep related part, I can get within hours. Motors, trans, axles you name it they are easy to get. Those 4 cyl motors don’t seem to last long, they put them in the dodge dakotas too so if you look for used motors look for them under the Dakota name might have better luck. Great video man!

Your socket reminded me of one of my pairs of pliers. I was trying to adjust the well pump for my house, when the damn thing kicked on, and just about welded my pliers to the nut I was trying to turn. Fortunately the pliers had rubber coated handles, or I might be dead. Don't mess with electricity kids. Turn off the breakers, disconnect the battery.

The Ford dealer in Healdsburg, CA had a dot matrix printer in their service department until last summer. It printed on the three copy paper with the tear off sides. I always marveled that they still had that thing running after all these years. They replaced it not because it broke down, but because getting the paper printed up with their header, etc, was getting harder and harder.

Pulling on a wire with needle nose...whoops. Your skull leaks profusely with very little damage. Stream of blood the size of a pencil. House looked like a crime scene. Gonna be several days for it to heal. OUCH!
