- Before we ever even think about putting a diver under the ice, we have to travel, shop, and get set up in Nome. But life just below the Arctic Circle in the dead of winter is full of challenges, and meeting even your basic needs is a struggle. This is a few scenes from the "road to ice mining."

Oh no, I had plumbing issues last year in December and January with a broken pipe under the snow going to the septic, what a mess! I feel for you having to clean up that shower. Hang in there Emily! "When things get tough, the tough get going!"
Make sure the fumes from the diesel heater are vented far from the house. Also have Carbon Monoxide detectors in different rooms throughout your home.

12 degrees with a 22mph wind in Nome today (2/17/22) 56 degrees here in CA. I just started panning my bag of Bering Sea Paydirt. So far lots of fine gold. I'm with you in spirit! LOL!

I cannot fathom your lifestyle, your groceries prices are outrageous, finding parts for anything are nilly point shit, to be able to survive makes you awesome. Do you use antifreeze in your plumbing before you leave before the winter? I can go to my cabin any time and use the toilet during the winter as long as I have a bucket of water to flush. I won't necessarily flush every time (yuck). But my pipes can't freeze because I leave antifreeze in the toilet and drains before winter starts.

That wind is normal here in Ellensburg WA State (next to Liberty gold mines).
Tip: Store snow machine up on two pallets high.
Old timers with bulldozer and excavator , park their equipment over a cold night with a log under the tracks . Keeps the tracks from freezing to the ground .
Alot of people don't know it but in northern minnesota in the lower 48 is alot like Alaska we hit 65 below for a few months this winter so every year we deal with frozen water and sewer were it backs up in your shower or tubs and you need honey buckets or whatever the preference is! And snow bound for days!

unreal how people can work in that kind of stuff. just shows you how hard it is to mine under the water in freezing temps. you have to really love what you do to do that kind of stuff

Porcelain does not like being frozen . It usually develops micro cracks all over the place .

I had that happen to me before 3 inch drain lines froze and took forever to thaw

It Takes Money For Everything,And I'm On The Poor Side, Dealing With 7 Medicals, 3 Out Of The 7 Are The Most Serious Ones, And I'm By.Myself Doing It All. I Have Nothing But Realtor Matters. Trust Me. I Can Relate. I Do'nt Even Have A UA-cam Channel Yet, No Heat In The 1 House That I'm Currently Living In. After pipes freeze they can form leaks at the joints. Make sure to look under house for leaks or you may have problems.

LOL Come live in Oklahoma 25 to 30 MPH is almost everyday. We don't get worried until the winds get to 70 MPH. LOL JK But it is always windy here.

Bad connections not only lead to the OBVIOUS, of not starting but then the not so obvious. That would be burning out the alternator as it can't read the battery reserve so it can run at full amp without control and overheat and burn up.
The insulation on the pipes beneath the house is good but also needs insulation put on the skirting/walls beneath the house too... Would probably end the freezing pipes issue in most cases...

I’m dying to see more of Alaska this year. I would happily fly up with supplies from the city if you’ll trade me for showing me where to get good strong coffee in Nome. 😉 I’ve got a tiny house close to town down here if you want a place to stay when the salmon run.. or whenever. I love living in Alaska where we all kind of either know each other or at least are related to the ones we don’t know yet. 🤣 You can decide after coffee so you can see I’m more “Alaska weird”than scary 😉lol. Stunning s*** come on Emily in Connecticut last week it was blowing 65 and 65 is slow it usually blows around 70 to 85 when we have a nor'easter and we don't lose power we're lucky we live right by a police station so for some reason we all lose power you think it might have something to do with the police station I don't know but since we've been living here for the last eight or nine years we've never lost power thank the Lord knock on wood whatever you want to do whatever demons I need to cast out we have never lost power and we have we have had winds up to a hundred miles an hour here in Connecticut and that's blowing and you know what a 100 mile an hour winds are like especially if you're in gnome Alaska I'm doing voice to text it won't let me do gnome to Alaska it just won't pick it up sorry I got brain cancer that ain't my fault I blame it on the cell phones I've had the same phone number for almost 25 years but I always use speakerphone it doesn't matter but Emily you know when the wind's blowing you know when to get off the ice I've watched your show you even know when to get off the water you're no newbie to the weather when the weather tells you get out you get out the only thing that sucks for anybody that loves your show is we only get clips of it on UA-cam now because you're on Discovery Plus and I can't afford Discovery Plus I have a limited budget real limited the government screwing me but if you jump the border you get more than I do and I worked my whole life government ever knocks on your door and says how can I help you shut the door and say f*** you you can't and that's the truth don't ever take help from the government because they can't help you in any way the only thing that I can say that they have done for me in any way has helped me with my health insurance because there's no way I could pay for my cancer treatment actually my whole family couldn't pay for my cancer treatment and I'm talking mother father aunts uncles everyone I'd be screwed actually I just be dead which sometimes I would prefer because I'll tell you what haven't brain cancer sucks I wish I could dive under the ice I bet it's real peaceful under there that's all I have to say if I had a dream I would come and dive under the ice with you guys and I know I could do it because I bet that's the best in the most peaceful place you could ever be there's no noise there's nobody yelling at you and telling you what to do and I cannot stand people that tell me what to do it is what it is God bless you and yours later from Connecticut I hate to bring my problems to you so don't take them as problems take them as an uplifting spirit to your next adventure think of me when your next tire is down and you're collecting gold later
