Historic Salt Tram Tower "Vandalized" By Off-Roader Stuck in the Mud
I have gotten SO many emails and messages about this story, I figured I'd better drive out to the scene of the crime and investigate for myself!
Last month, an illegal off-roader became bogged down in the mud on the edge of a remote Death Valley salt lake... and tried to winch himself out using an old support pillar from an historic salt tramway, toppling the pillar in the process. Internet outrage ensued, and people were calling for this "vandal"'s blood. But....was the fury justified? Join me as I examine the facts (as far as we know them)...and decide for yourself!

It looks like that 'tower' was still secured pretty deep, judging from that big block that got torn out of the ground. Makes you wonder how (stupidly) high the guy attached his winch-cable?
Oh well, "stupid is as stupid does".....Nice report Sarah, you usually have a unique perspective.
It's a Virgo thing..we will.ALWAYS try to see both sides.and myself personally, like to give someone the benefit of the doubt..until they prove themselves wrong...one of my pet peeves is when people ASSUME anything without the knowledge of what they are talking about. This is one reason I love her videos so much...she puts in the time to do research and educate herself before speaking. ( Great trait) IMO.

@@lorrie5881 But she doesn't say what she really thinks. Tries to please her viewers (some of them). I, as a Virgo, HAVE TO speak my mind. Money or public support means little to me.
Sarah, I like that you try to see it from both sides to flesh out the nuances. Humans are human! In most places, Search and Rescue do their job without reimbursement regardless of whether the person(s) were in a bind of there own making or not. I agree he was dumb to ignore the signs, but hopefully he’s not overly fined.
@@traceytrotter9934 Sarah needs to think about keeping it mellow so as not to upset the UA-cam Gods. She's being diplomatic and smart, IMO.
Didn't know the Saline Valley was super secret... We all know where the salt trams were located...
😂
It was on the news a couple weeks ago. The person who did it confessed.
He turned himself in only after he was identified and blown up on social media.
Oh man. Now Everyone will know.
SSSSSSSSSHHHHHHHHH😅😅
Hey Sarah, this is Steve. We meet while you were grocery shopping Monday evening. Just wanted to thank you for taking the time to chat.
Don’t know how I missed running into you. I went thru Bishop 2 days & 4 days before Mule Days 2024. Also was at the hot springs 10 miles from the toppled tram tower 3 days before you visited the tower (95F-too hot). And was Mammoth & keough HS 6 to 1 days before Mule Days. Missed the parade as I had to rush home for a memorial service on same day as the mule parade- some day. Oh Outside Magazine and NPS have the video of the girl in Dasy Duke shorts being rescued. 2 or 3 off-readers hitched up winch lines to the stuck vehicle.
You have to think of what this scofflaw did like this: if everybody broke the rules and hooked their winch up to any available tram tower, there wouldn't be any tram towers left for future generations.
If the dude tied to the bottom of the tram tower, it may have not tumbled
It probably would have dragged
I was thinking the same thing. Everything about this incident shows they were all at Novice level;
The decision to violate Wilderness Area,
The decision to venture out on a VERY wet week,
The decision not to bring recovery gear,
The decision to Turn around, ....
@@rubiconadventurewithscotty3258 Legally it's not wilderness area. Wilderness areas are very specifically defined. Simply being undeveloped National Park (or BLM) does not make it wilderness. Wilderness areas are always at least a portion of a mile from the nearest parking area.
Interesting fact. Taking any mechanical or motorized vehicle into a wilderness is a huge no no. Years ago rangers caught a guy with his jeep well beyond the boundary. They busted him and besides any fines he may have paid he was ordered bu the court to remove it via only muscle power. He had to dismantle the vehicle and carry it out. I don't know if was allowed to use mules or not but it was a long hard job for him to get it done.
He tied off high and levered the concrete footing right out of the ground, even breaking the concrete leaving some in place
I was thinking that but sometimes hooking at a higher point helps pull the vehicle out of the suction from the mud
You’re a great journalist. I love to see the Wonderful World of Wonder Hussy Channel any day over all the other BS. ❤
Glad you made it there to do a thorough investigation, Lady Wonderhussy! You get "just the facts, ma'am "!! Please stay safe 🙏 🙏 🙏!!!
I say leave the damn thing alone. It will now become one of the many damaged mine artifacts that litter the desert.
It's obviously not THAT darned secret! That dirt road is VERY well traveled.
And who the heck are people to tell any of us what we can or can't say on social media?
For those who want to know It happened in Saline Valley and it's named all over the internet!
There is also a clothing optional warm springs somewhere out there in Saline Valley. I'm sure WH has been there, but I bet she wasn't allowed to say the name of it. And no, I'm not telling any big secret here. It's right on the National Parks Service website! No, you can NOT drive any old car out there, so don't even THINK about it.
You tell 'em !!!!! I too bam sick of people bullying sarah on what she can tell or not !
The person that did it confessed a couple weeks ago.
Heck, you didn't even need to do Google Fu, the historical marker in the video names it...Saline Valley.
About 25 years ago right after it became part of Death Valley, the permanent types who camp by hot springs got touchy, I tried to do a outdoor segment there in 1999 and got some blowback from local campers. 45 years ago that place was empty and tubs just hewn, paradise for winter spring camping

YAY!!!! TWO VIDS TODAY!!!
Number 1 rule of off-roading by yourself: NEVER put yourself in a situation that you can't get out of.
They can put up a sign marking the occasion. "In April 2024, an off roader pulled this tower down trying to winch out their stuck vehicle". Boom. It's now part of the history of the tram. 😂
Well said. This will be part of the history of the tram no matter what they do. They should not try to alter history.
Works for me!

As BLM closes toilets, and ignores facility upgrades, it definitely makes sense to rebuild stuff that’s actively collapsing. But hey, free money! Oh, wait. That’s my money.
That's not the only Crime committed in the Area, A hundred years ago, a man named Mulholland stole All the Water from the Owens Valley to quench the thirst of a growing metropolis on the West Coast.
Oh is Mulholland Drive named after him?
If so, figures some wealthy land and resources theft would have a fancy pants area road/drive naked after him.
@@desireedesenna9673 Yes, that's the culprit.
@@desireedesenna9673 The movie Chinatown, with Jack Nicholson, is loosely based on Mr Mulholland.
@@angeloangelojoseph1494 While he was certainly a party to the diversion of Owens River water he was not the only figure responsible. Then Mayor Fred Eaton was the primary instigator of dirty tricks to obtain water rights in the Eastern Sierra. William Mulholland was the Civil Engineer tasked with building the aqueduct system, though he was used by Eaton to disseminate inaccurate statistics regarding available water in the LA basin to garner public support for the project.
@@desireedesenna9673 no, Mulholland Dr was named after Herbie Mulholland.
Howdy Sarah! I hate to see things torn up, vandalized or tagged by some inconsiderate butt holes with nothing better to do. Their parents failed them. Stay safe, keep smiling, thanks for sharing and taking us along.
Good presentation. You’ve made it clear that as an off-roader you obey sensible rules that prevent getting yourself into a jam, i.e. those orange board things to help get you out of the mire. Those who wish to enjoy these remote locations should respect them, and minimise the impact they have, otherwise, the clutter of the modern world will ruin it for all. 👍👍👍❤😊
So glad you did this story! I knew it was right up your alley! You rock girl!❤
Great video Wonderhussy, always happy to feed the UA-cam algorithm with a comment. Need to do our part for Wonderhussy to make a living off the meager ad revenue!
I really like all your stories
OMG, Sarah Jane, this video was sooooooooo good -- Thank You!!!!
I've seen someone ues there spair tire, you dig a hole put tire in hole and cover it up. Hook your winch and pull yourself out. This is called a land anchor.
Cool, seen the bags at the expo you do the same; fill with sand and bury
YES!
I can't believe that would work. The winch would pull the tire out before moving a truck, no?
Exquisitely well done, ma'am. The case for reasonableness is so infrequently made. Glad you took it on. I think you knocked it out of the park. Thank you.
Call Disney. Let them refurbish the whole tram and start tram rides for tourists. Imagine the boom for the local economy!
Right, Disney would screw that up too! 🥴
The comment "The scene of the Crime" reminded me of the ballad "Alice's Restaurant" by good ole Arlo!! Look that up!!

The Saline Valley Salt Tram is still in pretty good shape in the mountains above Owens Lake. You should go up and look at the towers up there.

Extremest negative trolls of any kind are exhausting. Just upright the darn thing extremest wouldn't allow access to anything everything. Then the next level of extremest would want to restrict average to lower income people from enjoying all of our natural outdoors. The whole a few people ruin it for everyone angers me just another excuse to limit access deal with the people problems. There's a lot of our public parks/camping facilities I stopped going to many people camping think run under a personal HOA . United we stand divided we fall. Thank you wandering Wonderhussy for the adventure travel video
It does look that simple
Thanks for the update 😊
Great video! I have found that a great number of people think because they have 4wheel drive they can't get stuck.... They think it's easy to go off roading in there fancy trucks. Well i guess he learned an expensive lesson....
You rock Sara!!!

He turned his self in. He hooked his winch to it in a act of desperate attempt to get out. Now. He's at the mercy of the parks service. He should not of been there. He will pay. I heard of this in the Winston Salem Journal from Belews Creek North Carolina. Love you Wonder Hussy♥️

Great video!
I love that area of Death Valley because so few people can go there. I'm glad I was able to photograph that tower being it was destroyed. Another area I like was vandalized by off-roaders who drive in restricted area with impunity. It isn't just historical, but adds to the unique beauty of the area. Only self-centered people with no appreciation for the outdoors do this. The fines levied on the vandal will recoup the cost of repairs. They will pay for the restoration; not the government. Excellent video! Thank you.
The tower kinda looks like a 20 min delicate winch pull might right it
@@rubiconadventurewithscotty3258 Yes but as Sarah said the central support is shattered. It won't stand in that condition. It will take some repair and finesse to get it back right.

Sarah you mentioned how things last in an arid climate. Six years ago at Peach Springs AZ on old Route 66, I visited the Grand Canyon Caverns. Some of the stairs in the caverns were made with scaffolding used when Hoover Dam was built. Hasn’t been 100 years ago yet, but that wood looked perfect.
Thx Sarah...interesting story.
I agree with the "Nuance"...the guy should be forced to participate in the physical restoration of this historic firewood pile. This would be a good lesson.
I didn't know the Saline Valley was a secret...lol
Thank you for taking us along on the journey to the Valley. It was sad to see the damage to the historical structure and grounds. However, I hope your vlog teaches us to respect the sites. It was interesting to learn of how salt was harvested in the early century and how it was utilized to preserve food before refrigeration - I am so thankful for my Igloo cooler now 🤣. That was a great report. Best wishes to you and the family. Take care and stay awesome. I am looking forward to the next adventure vlog. 😀
I imagine that even though the Park Service has funds available to do the restoration I assume that they will be reimbursed from the offender provided they can collect. The guy was a knob head but haven’t we all been knob heads ourselves at least once in our lives.Hopefully he has learned his lesson and will be a better human going forward. There are many people now a days that don’t want to take responsibility for their actions. Even ones in high places. Thanks Sarah for this fascinating take on what normally would be a small news story or one that went totally unreported in the analogue days,
Interesting story...good job
Love you so much Sare. You're extremely funny. I live in Nashville but 2 weeks ago I was in the Mojave Desert visiting my sister in Victorville. Thinking of you when I traveled westward on highway 18 towards the San Fernando Valley.
Cool vid thanks sarah!

you're great thank you and I agree with you
These are the same DA people who choose to ignore the signs of national parks like, “don’t go near the baby cubs and try to take your picture with them” 🤦♀️
This is the same level of intelligence as the moron, Sergio Martinez of West Covina, California, who started the Cedar Fire (killing 15 people) by setting off a flare because he was lost in dense brush a few miles from civilization.
Very interesting video and well stated. I agree with your assessment.

Best coverage of this outrage yet. Wonderhussy News Channel? There's plenty of weird stuff going on everywhere. Needs more coverage
The bonehead had no business there in the first place. That’s why we can’t have nice things. If the genius had hooked his cable to the base of the tower instead of the upright, it probably would have stayed put. It’s called ‘leverage’. Guy should be fined
People never learn if the punishment for stupidity does not hurt.
exactly. the numbnut didn't want to get on his knees to attach the winch line and attached it too high, then wasn't bright enough to watch the tower and stop pulling when it clearly wasn't going to work. experienced off-roader? i don't think so. probably an off-road poser with lots of shiny new gear but no clue how to use any of it.
That's just what I was thinking. If they would have used some common sense. And hooked up down low at the base. That would have been the end of the story. No damage no story.
Well...In my humble observation it seems if that had been a statue of a historical figure-these mobs wouldn't have gave a rats...

Many years ago I drove on dirt roads from Lone Pine CA to Death Valley. I've traveled through many climates and terrain types but those roads had some of the worst washboarding I've been on. The name is given away in a comment above. The sign made it easy for anyone to find it on a google map what with the name of the closest town easy to read.
Yes, give him the “chair”. lol
The "chair?" I thought someone would have suggested he carry the downed tram support up one of those mountains. After all we must "bear our own cross." In keeping with the spirit of the times when the tram was built, he would be (1) nailed to that cross, or (2) or hung from it! An electric chair in the desert is just too much of anachronism! Too tacky! Must we always yield to modern tech? 6:54 it looks like a cross to me. Then again, maybe they should make him spend 40 days and nights in the desert. I guess in the end, whatever is done he would still get "fried" out there. I suppose he could always say the "devil talked him into doing it."
Oh, I almost forgot, I think back in those days didn't they just drop the guy in the hole he already made? In the ole days, at least in those cowboy and indian pics on TV, they would put the guy in the hole and bury him up to his head, then let him cook in the sun; ouch! sometimes they would pour molasses on his head so the ants would help in the execution--hey, they ain't got all day. But the ants were a last solution-assuming the scorpions hadn't finished him off first. The buzzards would be the clean-up crew I guess.
