I've often wondered what these are like and how they handle and when Swan Dodger Jon / @ruffpaddling got a Sandbanks Style I figured I'd check out... Jon and I are are planning a comparison review at some point...

Hi just order aqutec what do think of it .i have story 1 full drop stitch put put off by how unstable it is .are aqutecs better
@@micksoper4059 let's put it this way, I've sold the Story and kept the Ottawa 👍😁
Bought myself one of these a couple months ago, £350 but then another £60 for delivery. All in all I'm very satisfied, easy to inflate, easy to re-pack, glides along far better than the rental sit-on-top kayaks I was paying for and I've used it probably 10 times so far so it's already paid for itself. Only done some river trips on it haven't tried the sea, but it's very stable you can even stand-up on it if you want.
Aye it is a cracking craft. I reckon I'm gonna have some fun with it :D
The sound of oars in the water. Something about it just drops my blood pressure and makes me smile. Cracking vid. Nice one
I'm glad you've picked up on that... You may or may not have noticed that I endeavour to make the paddling aspects of my kayaking videos 'flow'. I spend a lot of editing time synchronising the paddle strokes & sounds because it's something I like too. 👍😊
Thanks for the vid, picked one of these up today. Can’t wait to get out on it.
I'm sure you'll enjoy it. Taking mine out again today comparing it with the Sandbanks 😁👍
Thanks for the exe review (and the Ottawa Vs Optimal one). Based on these, (and the KayakCrew one) I bought an Ottawa! Three uses, all coastal, all great.
PS - lovin’ the Hot Fuzz -style edit on the gearing-up sequence.
Cheers buddy, and I'm glad you like the Ottawa 👍😁
Great video, I’ve been looking at these, the sandbanks and the AE airvolution. For the money I’d def go for this. As you say the sandbanks and this are basically the same if not actually the same boat with different branding .
I am looking forward to getting the Sandbanks and Aquatec side by side 😁👍
Tarka the Otter 👍🏻 Great video as always
Kudos 😁 yes Tarka the Ottawa.
I'm glad you liked the video 😁👍
Hi Karl. Finally got out for a 10 miler to review my Ottawa Pro last Friday and I must say, I loved it. I also have a Bluewave Glider (475cm), and a Story Ranger One hybrid kayak but the Ottawa will now be my go-to kayak for solo outings 😁
Excellent 👍😊 I sold my Story Highline because the Ottawa is equally nippy and so much more stable.
@@MoreThanJustaCleaner Yes, I am looking at selling my Bluewave Glider now, DS kayaks have come a long way since I bought my first one in 2020.
Happy paddling, fella
Dave 👍
@@DavidWilsonOutandAbout likewise 👍😁
Karl, thanks for another great review! I live in the states, it looks very similar US company Advanced Elements Airvolution line of boats in design. The US company REI is selling Adananced Elements boat for about $750 US not sure how that compares in price to the Aquatech you are reviewing.
Hi Karl great vlog and liking the ottowa, much so that im Thinking of getting one,
I've also been looking at the aquamarina steam, and Razor ultra
The Ottawa is faster but heavier than the Steam. It'll be on a par both speed and weight-wise with the Razor possibly a fraction slower and it'll feel more stable.
Thanks for the info Karl much appreciated
@@wayneallen1546 you're welcome 😁
Cheers for the mention buddy :)
Another cracking vid. Looking forward to getting them side by side for a comparison soon!
You're welcome Jon. Let's see if we can do it sometime this month 👍😁
Are trying to get me in trouble, I’ve just bought a new boat and now you show me this grrrrr…….
@@geoffknight7322 lol sorry 😅
I will be interested to see how it does loaded with gear for a longer trip. I looked at these hard before going for the GoPlus. Mainly chose the GoPlus because I thought it would hold all the gear better. Now I’ve got the Navarro 130 which is better for long distances but I’d love the sleekness of the Aquatec.
Yes I'm looking forward to trying that out too. I can't see there being any issue if you place your gear with the more flexible parts directly on the boat so they flex with the curve of the craft 😁👍
You keep tempting me into buying new boats! This one looks really interesting, and the price isn't too bad.... Great video mate
It's a damn good price and a damn good craft - currently on offer!
@@MoreThanJustaCleaner I need to get more use out of my Story first I guess... and I still like my Sneaker Pimp (your Brent) but I've added this one to my wish list on your recommendation. I trust your views
@@molsi01 sell the Story and buy this 👍😊
@@MoreThanJustaCleaner really?? You'd honestly recommend that?
@@molsi01 I totally would, yes. The difference in performance is nominal from what I've experienced so far, and that comes with increased stability and easier loading.
great video 🙂
Thank you 👍😁
They are not the same :-) The Aquatec Ottowa hull shape is quite different to the Sandbanks Style Optimal (SSO). Whereas the Ottowa is largely flat the SSO has a V-profile hull from the bow to just behind the cockpit. This gives the SSO greater tracking (and helps cuts through the water slightly easier/faster). My experience is that the SSO can comfortably be used WITHOUT a skeg on shallow rivers such as the Wye, although I prefer to run with a cut-down 4" (10cm) skeg on other rivers/canals.
The moderate V-shaped hull trade off is slightly less primary stability than the Ottowa, although it is marginal and the SSO is VERY stable. The Sandbanks also comes with a huge wheeled bag that converts to backpack which is VERY useful.
I believe the Sandbanks Style Optimal is a superior craft albeit marginally and debatable whether that justifies the almost 50% higher cost than the Ottowa at time of writing.
Keep up the good work 👍Yours is one of my 3 favourite Kayak channels (the others being the "Kayak Crew" and "Paddle TV")
Given what you've written here, you're going to find the comparison video, which is coming soon, very interesting! 😁👍
@@MoreThanJustaCleaner Excellent, I look forward to your opinion on that :-)
To be fair I'm not convinced that the Sandbanks price premium justifies the marginal improvement although I do a bit of river Wye kayaking so being able to run skeg-free in shallow summer water is a big plus.
@@stevej6892 yes you're definitely going to like it, especially as it wasn't just me that came to the same conclusion 😁👍
Another good video Karl. I'm loving my Ottawa! I'm pretty sure that part of the Ouse requires a licence (and I would imagine you have one). Have you ever been asked to show it?
No never been asked 👍😄
Nah then, ay up me duck.
Seems like a good kayak and you're obviously pleased with it 👍🙂
I might sell the Story 😮
Amazing ....is it faster than the aqua marina cascade ? Do you thing that this is a better choice ? Thank you sir
Yes definitely a faster craft than the Cascade. It's a bit of a winner 👍😁
Hi Karl, love your videos! 👍
I have a question, not related to this video. In your opinion, what is better for occasional kayaking: the GoPlus or a paddleboard (SUP) with a kayak seat on top? Can't decide between these two after seeing your videos about the GoPlus, but considering that the SUP with a seat will be the same price range or even lower. Thanks a lot for your reply 🙂
I honestly couldn't say having never tried a SUP with a seat on. All I can say is I've seen some people seem to like it, however Bobby Dazzler in videos didn't like it when he tried it. The GoPlus will feel more like you're in a boat whereas a board will feel like you're on a boat. Does that make sense?
@@MoreThanJustaCleaner Yes, it makes sense. Just struggling to find anything related to this comparison on UA-cam. Thanks again and have a nice afternoon! 🙂👍
Don’t think you need to underinflate it no matter the weather, they are made to be used in tropical climates too and i know for a fact that britain is not that:)
That's a good point 😊
Have you tested any of these other models, if so what are your views,
Much appreciated....keep them vlog coming 😎
I've recently done a comparison with this and the Sandbanks. Coming next week I think 👍
Hi ,im gonna get one of these soon ,im trying to find out what bag you get with it ,on line it shows you get just a shoulder bag but here you get a wheelie bag and on david wilson out and about he gets the wheelie bag aswell ,its the wheelie bag i want
Mine came with a wheelie bag 👍😁
@@MoreThanJustaCleaner 🙂 that's good I hope my one does 👍
Hello, kind of late to this video, don't know how I missed it, but managed to do so. Just wondering if you've tried to self-rescue in the Ottawa? Thanks.
Funny you should say that - ua-cam.com/video/xtCheTZGSi4/v-deo.html :)
What are those pink things on the paddle? Looks like they are some kind of drip rings 👍
It's a thin piece of pool noodle. Added to the end of the paddle they're more effective than drip rings 👍😊
Hi Karl! Congrats for another great video.
I have one question, if you may;
Thinking about getting a kayak for the beach in the south of Spain, just fun short paddles (2-3 hours most). I'm between this Ottawa (500 euros) or the GoPlus (350 euros). Is it worth the upgrade for the money? Thanks in advance
That's a really interesting question considering the Med is pretty much landlocked... Ok, either way if it is choppy you'll end up with water in the cockpit. The GoPlus will be easier to dry out afterwards however the Ottawa will be faster on the water. Does that help?
@@MoreThanJustaCleaner it sure does!!! I think it's the GoPlus for me . Thanks a lot and keep on doing these great videos
@@nicolascortes9980 you're welcome and I'm glad you like what I'm doing 👍😁
Why did you get rid of the GoPlus?...I thought you loved that boat. Actually, I was thinking about getting one because of your recommendation. Thanks.
I bought 3 of the same style of craft to compare them and kept the Aqua Marina Cascade and sold the other 2. The GoPlus is a winner but at some point I've got to make space 😁
They're still a bargain at £299
amzn.to/3J1dsjh
👍💖 Yeah, you were moving fast.
It is nippy 😁👍
I struggle to keep 4 kayaks in my place. 😅 How many do you have already? I lost count...
Jokes aside, I'd like to try/test this design one day as it's a lot different from the typical tri-panel full DS kayak. 👍
Currently I have 10 boats 😬 mind you, 3 are on the 'to be sold' list 😁
Yes this design is different and cards on the table I didn't expect it to be quite as good as it is 😊
Hi Karl, I enjoyed your first outing review. My Ottawa Pro arrived last Friday, I have not had time to get out on the water with it as yet but managed to check it out and make a first impressions video. I must admit, I am very impressed with the kayak, not so much with the seat and paddle. A question, if you do not mind!, what length paddle are you using with the Ottawa?
ATB, Dave 🛶
I've got an adjustable one between 230 and 250. I was out in this boat this weekend with the paddle at 230cm. Does that help? 😊
@@MoreThanJustaCleaner Thanks, Karl. I have a 225 to 240cm paddle I use with my Story Ranger but want something lighter for the Ottawa. Hopefully, I will get out in the Ottawa Pro next Thursday for her maiden voyage, happy paddling fella 😉
@@DavidWilsonOutandAbout you're welcome, have fun 😁👍 and let me know how you get on with it!
@@MoreThanJustaCleaner Will do, be interesting to compare note 👍
@@DavidWilsonOutandAbout I've just done a comparison between this and the Sandbanks... Now that's gonna be an interesting video 👍😁
Been waiting for this Vid, ordering one tomorrow was undecided on this or the sandbanks you’ve now convinced me on Tarka the Otter cheers bud 👍🏻 one thing how is the pump that comes with it any good?
I haven't tried the pump however it looks functionally standard. I also haven't unpacked the paddle cos I can tell it's a bit sh!te 😏
Yeah not bothered about the paddle they all seem to be cheap sh!te that they bung in 😂 going to be using itiwit carbon paddle 👍🏻 I’ll test pump out when it gets delivered over the weekend cheers for reply bud
@@WelshCarpWarriors you're welcome, let me know how you get on with it 👍😁
Will do mate 👍🏻
Can’t fault there customer service replacement pump and bag being sent straight out 👍🏻
Hi. May I ask you this. I have a Sandbanks optimal which I love and my partner decided he wanted one too. After seeing your incredible comparison video we decided to go for the Ottawa which arrived today. Beauty! Now, both boats have some mysterious clips at the back of the upper part of the seat which are attache to….nothing. What on earth are they for? Do you know? Thanks!
I'm guessing what you're doing is pushing the seat right to the back of the cockpit... whereas it's actually supposed to be a bit further forward. The top clips fasten to the D-rings on the boat side whereas the bottom clips fasten to the rings on the back side of the cockpit.
@@MoreThanJustaCleaner yes but I am talking about 2 extra plastic clips at the top of the back seat. How can I send you a photo?
@@enricakita1 I think I know the ones you mean. I'm a bit clueless too however I think they might be for attaching a bag to the back of the seat.
@@MoreThanJustaCleaner ahhhh that makes sense! Thanks!
@@enricakita1 you're welcome 👍😊 ruddy good boats though, right? 😁
Which of these two kayaks will combine high stability and speed, safety and comfort of paddling: Aqua Tec - Ottawa pro Double or Advanced Elements - AirVolution 2. ???
now in the right thread
@@---sf5cf lol I've never paddled the Evolution so I can't comment. However in terms of value the Ottawa is hard to beat.
I have a big request - Can you measure the height inside from the floor to the edge of the side? How deep is the kayak?
@@---sf5cf no sorry, I don't have the space nor the time to inflate a boat just to measure it, especially when the info you want is on the Net World Sports site advert for the boats 👍😊
have you ever done any of your geocaching abroad?
Not the type of comment I was expecting on this video 😅 Anyway, no I haven't been abroad since I took up geocaching.
How do you rate it against the story?? We have a Story but one of our new Ducks is looking for a craft..
Let's put it this way... I'm thinking about selling the Story! 😮
@@MoreThanJustaCleaner
That's good enough for me thank you
@@angryduckskayak you're welcome 😁
Trying to get the wife to approve this one haha. Shes almost sold
I was out on it also yesterday comparing it with the Sandbanks... This is the better option 👍😁
Hi! Remember I had told you that I have a Sandbanks and my partner just bought an Ottawa? So we went out and tried to compare [we don’t have any instruments to do that, just impressions]
Well speed wise, we felt that the Ottawa had greater acceleration from zero. Went off like shit off a shovel😂
Handling wise we did not feel there was any conspicuous difference
Aesthetic: I find the squishy squashy noses as ugly as f+++, but my partner is not that bothered so…it is his boat…god knows why they made them so ugly. When you fold the boat they squish in a messy heap. I would say the sandbanks has the edge over the looks, but with the difference in price…who cares. The paddle of the Ottawa is much stronger than the one I got with the Sandbanks, which resembles more those sloppy flaps you kill forest fires with. But dont care as I use a Greenland paddle anyway. We found a yoga block makes a fab foot rest, as the round shape you have to brace your feet on in both boats we find sore after a while.
Anyway, they are both joyful boats and they are the most fun of all the inflatables we have had so far. You do need a bit of muscle to humph them both, especially the Ottawa, but heyho, cant have everything. And at 400 quid, well…whats not to like! Greetings. Love your videos. You are good crack
Reading that really made my day, and made me 😂 thanks for sharing!
The noses are a bit weird - I see them as impact crumple zones.
It's interesting you had similar results to me comparing their respective speeds. I took the Ottawa out a couple of weeks ago and I'd forgotten just how much I love paddling it.
As you've said, the only downside is the weight and foot rest position. I think I'll try a yoga brick. I tried one of those foam rollers but that was too bulky.
😁😁😁
Forgot to say, the Ottawa paddle might be sturdier but it weighs 65 tons…
@@enricakita1 😂😂😂 mine is still in the wrapping!
It's strange because the optimal is now much cheaper then the Ottowa
I think you'll find the only Ottawa available is the double which is why it appears dearer... I think...
Have a comment for the old algorithm 👍
Lol cheers Tom - I'll reply for the same reason 🤪😁
@@MoreThanJustaCleaner indeed.
Tarka the otter 🦦
Kudos! Tarka the Ottawa 😁👍
It looks like an AirVolution knock off.
Which came first? 🤪
@@MoreThanJustaCleaner Razorlite came first, as the world's first all drop stitch kayak.
Advanced Elements, inspired, made their version of an all drop stitch as Air Volution closed cockpit design.
So you could say it's a knock off of a knock off. LOL
@@classicarcadeamusementpark4242 lol seems so :D
Similar up top although the hull design (underneath) is very different between all 3, as is the price (Airvolution £1300 / Ottowa £450 / SS Optimal £650 - £750). There are also other more subtle differences such as the Airvolution can take a spray skirt, and different carry bags, some of which have wheels which is very useful :-)
Hi thanks for your review iv been looking to get one if these clam style kayaks, can you tell me what pump you were using and where to get one ,thanks
Hi there, I'm glad you like the video
This is the pump - amzn.to/3QfOn99
On my current run between charges I've inflated the AG Cirrus x5, AM Cascade x1 and the A'tec Ottawa x1, and there's still 2 to 3 bars power showing 👍😁
Hi again! Is it significantly faster then the GoPlus? And what about the stability, as the GoPlus is just a stable beast. Thank you! 👍🛶
I'd say it's about 1 to 2mph faster, which with IKs is quite significant. As for stability, I reckon the GoPlus would have the edge, nevertheless the Ottawa is really stable. I sold the Story in favour of keeping the Ottawa because the Ottawa is on a par speed wise but significantly more stable. I hope that helps 😁👍
@@MoreThanJustaCleaner Thank you! Saving money for the Ottawa now. Have a great day, waiting for your next video!
By the way, the short video cuts at the beginning of this video are awesome! 😎👍
@@ChopeZzz I'm glad you liked that, they were fun to do 😁
Would you say a good choice for a beginner?
@@silkstoneif you are asking about the GoPlus then yes, it is extremely beginner-friendly: relatively easy to carry around, to inflate, to paddle, keeps a fairly straight course and very stable. If you are asking about the Ottowa, then Karl is your man. Good luck! 😎🛶
