- I bought this Squire Bullet Mustang for my younger brother as an upgrade. Straight out of the box I was very unimpressed, but after a little bit of work, I was seriously impressed! Here's an in depth review of it you should watch before you buy.

I have 9 electric guitars and play my mustang HH the most
John, Bullet Mustangs are fun! I play mine too. But I had to change the intonation screws and also to rewire the tone pot - it was working only at max volume. Those two are the typical issues of only this model and thats too much, it shouldn't happen. I think you'll agree with me on that
Same, it's crazy. This is the best fitting in my hands guitar I have. It doesn't kill my back. Totally get it. I have a wall of guitars also. This is by far the one I grab to jam almost always lol.
i got a teal one with a lot of sharpie on it that my band put on it looks dope tho lots of band logos and funny faces
I had the same intonation issues with my Bullet Mustang. So I did some research and found that Leo Fender originally designed offset guitars to have a slight pitchback to the neck. I don't understand the physics of it, but sure enough, after I shimmed the neck to pitch it back slightly and raised the saddles to match, intonation was super easy and hasn't been a problem since. I also installed locking tuners and roller string trees (and a set of P90s.)
SHIM THE NECK, I promise you it will solve the problem.
What is the best way to do that? Does it influence the sustain?

Also they want heavy gauge strings. Mine is always in double drop d (DADGBD) and I religiously use GHS 12-52s and it perfect so yeah shine the neck (I used a parchment paper bag cut a rectangular piece and double it’s thickness by folding it once so probably no more than .004th

I’ve had mine about 3 years now and love it. Play it far more than my more expensive Fenders. I was lucky that it was setup at the shop I got it from so no intonation probs with the screws etc. I have worked on it since, filing and polishing, adding an orange drop and changing to 500k pots, changing the nut and tuners. Think this is an amazing guitar especially for the price but it’s a guitar for more experienced players and those that want a good nodding platform unless as a beginner you know someone that can work on it for you or are prepared to pay for that service.
Silly question: did you get the same issue with the bridge? 😅 If so, what was your approach?

Thanks bud! I always try to review things in a way that gives an honest look at user experience rather than just throwing stats, specs, and data on the screen 👍 Especially for a budget guitar, user experience is key.
mine plays perfectely out of the box till today. Zero intonation, tunning problems. The frets still a bit rough but still a joy to play. One could mode anything but still perfect the way it is. Just a fun little great guitar.
I like the way sandpaper frets sound. It gives it a dirty effect.
The frets get polished just by playing it for about 1 hour. I had no problem intonating. Had to file a few fret ends, and it took about 5 minutes. I also lowered the bridge and tightened the neck truss rod to get low action, had to put two thick nylon spacing washers under the truss rods adjustment nut because without them the nut bottomed and stopped. I also installed 10 gauge strings because 9's were too loose and bending without even trying. It's really good now and easy to play.
Out of the box absolutely incredible... I have 22 guitars Jem7pbk I replaced the tuners with steinberger gearless tuners now it's beyond incredible... I will be buying another... the weight makes playing for long periods of time... over all an awesome guitar... the problems mentioned are not problems they're normal guitar up keep... beginners need to learn that too... and again I had absolutely zero problems out of the box... if you get one enjoy it for years to come! 😁
Mine was a basket case out of the box. Fairly certain it was ‘open-box’ sold as ‘new’. Bought it to use it as an experimental/mod platform anyway, still gave the seller a 1 star review. Going to install the Gotoh 510UB on it next week. It’s a big honking chunk of metal, the hope is it will add some resonance and stability. I also noticed that the original bridge was substantially indented into the soft wood on one side from being tightened down incorrectly during installation.

The bare wood necks are great, they feel so good after playing them for a month and get smoothed out naturally.

I think they're really good for beginners. Most buyers have internet access and can do simple adjustments on their guitars, it's part of learning the instrument. Maybe 1 in 200 might need a professional to take a look but in general the average person could get the Squier Mustang and be totally happy with it as is, with new strings of course.
The intonation is a bit of a concern but as far as the neck and fretwork goes, I actually enjoy working on that stuff so no deal-breakers there. Thanks for the walkthrough.

I have one it's great didn't really have any problem just new string's and adjustments I put #10 strings
Great job! I love mine though I majorly modded it.
I found the best way to give some screw clearance to the saddles, is to use string tree spacers on the backside of the bridge/screw... solid metal and different sizes can get you where you need to go
Just picked one up & I have all the issues you mentioned. Sharpest fret ends I've gotten on the tone side, & just crusty as hell, just started putting work into it, & likewise havi g problems getting the low E to intonate. Love the weight & feel, as well as the super slim neck, pleasantly surprised by the pickups, will keep them in for now. Gonna do some mods & probably throw 11's on it, jury's still out on it for my personal tastes. Very informative vid for anyone considering one of these.

Got one of these this christmas. I have been playing acoustics rather than electrics for the last 20yrs so this was a 'dipping my toe' back into the water purchase. I am pleased with it but agree with all your comments. Would recommend to new players with the caveat that they should be interested in also learning why guitars play and sound they way they do...learn to tinker, basic set up etc! I can see this would make a really good modding platform too. One thing - it is very loose...short scale to blame...so am thinking of going slightly heavier strings maybe 11s...which goes against all my old prejudice of v. light strings on an electric! What do you all think any one try running heavier gauge?

I have the black one from the original run. I fell in love with the neck instantly, having never tried a short-scale or 12" radius. I think the comfort is such a wow factor to traditional 9.5"(or less)/25.5 inch scale Fender players, that they overlook the issues you point out when reviewing - particularly given the affordability. I had the same problems with the bridge & frets. A little bit of work & it's the best guitar ever for grungey/punk/shoegazer powerchord stuff. And it has certainly got me interested in looking at Gibsons for scale/radius, or at least super-strat Charvels and the like.
Thanks for your honesty in this video. So many UA-camrs praise every item they review. Would you say the Yamaha pacifica 112J is a better buy in terms of playability straight out of the box?
I can’t really speak to that because I bought my Pacifica second hand, but what I will say is I bought it second hand for around the same price as the Squire, it only had one previous owner (a young girl who barely played it), and it plays great and is a superior piece of equipment 👍 Hope that helps.
Really enjoyed this review. Poor grandma! I just picked up a used HH Mustang for £70 and yeah sure enough, the intonation on the EAD strings is way off. I'll try inserting the washers under the saddle screws; the action could be lower too. Mine's white with a white scratchplate but I'm planning on swapping that out with a red tortoiseshell for added cool vibes.
I have a surf green fender duo-sonic which I love and is my favourite guitar. I bought second hand one of these in olympic white for my daughter to learn on, someone put a decent nut on and some roller sadles on and I gotta say it played really well, i often pick it up instead of my original guitar.
I had one of these as my first ‘proper’ guitar when I started playing more. The intonation was bad, the action was high and the frets were so scratchy. I fixed the first two problems but just ended up selling it around a year later. If you buy one of these lower end guitars, it’s definitely worth getting it fully setup.

That intonation issue is also present on Cyclones. I've got a 2003 Fender Cyclone and to get it to intonate I have to shim the neck to increase the scale length by a few millimeters.
I bought a squier sonic mustang today and it is a lovely guitar. Very playable. 💓🎸.
i heard about this fret issue - it was described to me as "little lines" on the frets that inhibit bending . thats a common issue when i have gone to upgrade bridges its so frustrating , and i own a grinder and files ... i got a sunburst cyclone for our daughter and we upgraded it . its a really nice guitar , mind you this was like 2016 or so , but it came playable out of the box . i think we paid 199 , i bet that guitar would sound great with a mxr distortion plus pedal .
Squire makes good guitars, you might have to work on them a bit sometimes, but they are solid. I love my Mustang, but it’s got one annoying issue, the bridge isn’t on right. So the strings are a bit diagonal. Other than that it plays well and is my second favorite guitar with no mods.
Can you reinstall it straight, is it an aftermarket bridge?
Haha . " Show grandma how you can play Paranoid... " frickin brilliant. Great review . Have two of these and they are my main gigging guitars . Yes the intonation can be somewhat problematic . I sometimes have to adjust it after changing strings but perhaps I've been fortunate in that regard. No mods and they stay in tune very well. I also have one of the new Squier Sonic Mustangs with single coil. Like the humbuckers better. Hard to beat for the price. Great guitars. Haha poor ol ' granny.
4:05 I have never liked how thick the upper horn of the pacifica is... so i grabbed a chisel and "rounded" the edges 😅 . As this mustang is thinner bodied than the Pacifica (which is considerably lighter than my Strat and Les Paul), then I may grab one.
Honestly, I have never grabbed a cheap guitar that was intonated out of the box 🤷🏻 ... frets come scratchy even on the MIM Fenders.
I bought mine from a music shop and the strings sounded amazing I kept the ball ends to try and find the match but atm using elixir strings and it sounds amazing I get that twangy nirvana tone and I think it's great for the money I think this is a great guitar

I know after a year it's late to suggest anything but was wondering did you consider a bridge upgrade, my Vintage Modified Telecaster Nashville needed a new bridge as the saddle screws were drilled crooked and the saddle height screws were a bit long, a new Musicly bridge with 3 brass saddles fixed it.
A better buy for a near intermediate guitar player would be a Classic Vibe model..

I bought this guitar and it’s was ready out of the box, I guess it depends on the guitar you get it probly verrys, but mine works fine I play it a lot and it never gives me any issues. But yeh I had no problems with it.
One was intoned and tuned pretty well. I did however, have to do a fret polish. Once done, it was fine.
Mine was playable…. Tunes etc… real strings .. got mine in 2022
I just realized these exist and cost 200 bucks. I was gonna just get a fender and splurge but this guitar made me rethink. But you actually just saved me from buying it. I don’t care about anything you said except for that it feels more like an sg. I was given a custom shop sg to play on stage with my band from a rich friend of the band. I played it one show and immediately gave it back. Went right back to my Tom delong strat. Didn’t even care it was like a 4k dollar guitar.
Guess I’ll just get a telecaster hh and mod it.

There is no such thing as beginner guitars, only beginners.
As a newbie learning guitar (4 months in) i had several guitars for a week or so. One of them was a blue Bullet Mustang HH and i just fell in love with how...efortless that instrument is. As you said, it is thin, light, 24" scale...just practicing basic things like memorising main chords (A, C, D, Am, Dm, Em etc) and getting a grip to switching chords quickly and strummung patterns, i was shocked to see that i my practice session was 50 mins. No finger pain, no back pain....nothing....it was so easy to just sit and let time fly by and as a beginner, just put in the time on strumming and chord changing. Sadly mine had some issues, frets were not polsihed (but not as bad as you mentioned), pots were crackling (despite cleaning them) and for some reason, neck pickup was so loud and dominated the bridge pickup, it was under a 30 day money back garantie so i sent it back, but i really want one, mainly due to just how it made me keep practicing without any effords, especially leaning finger stretching (i have normal hands, but as a body builder my fingers are stubby, used to gripping barbells). Seriously considering getting another one...hopefully with little issues.
Let me suggest to try next time to adjust the pickups height. You should be able to deal with the volume change between neck ans bridge.
@@NicolasGalante Hello, thank you for your reply. Yes i did cover all the basics once i got the guitare out of the package. Truss rod adjustment, string heights, inntonation and the pickup heights. Sadly it did not help, something was just off with the neck pickup. The new Sonic SS Mustang looks great, really tempted...not sure just yet.

It’s really a toss up if you get a good one or a bad one, luckily you can try a few to get a decent one, just find one in the store that plays well. I lucked out, the only issue I have with mine is the neck humbucker is to dark and muddy. The string holes on the bridge could make stringing it a bit easier. A bit rough fret edges.
Overall though, the thing shreds very hard, the cons are soo small to me that I don’t even care. I don’t play my suhr, sg, Ernie ball or Jaguar anymore. I’m addicted to these budget models, try a few and when you pick up a decent one you’ll totally get it. 10 gauge strings is unnecessary, fender 9s are perfect. I can go from nirvana to Steve Vai on it quick. Legato is a dream, alternate picking is easy as well on it. It’s the perfect balance.
As for the intonation, I haven’t had a single issue. Literally all I have had to do is change strings, so maybe you just got a bad one? I don’t know, but it couldn’t be any easier to use for me.
I actually enjoyed the factory strings lol. If you struggle on this guitar it’s just maybe not for you, but if you’re technique is correct and you have a good touch, you’ll won’t have a problem with it
Just picked up one of these and it seems as though they have made the screws shorter to stop them touching the strings. Great guitar for the money but does need a set up and still comes with those awful weird feeling strings get them off straight away, and put on some 10 gauge and now it plays lovely
Very nice .Anyone thinking about buying a Squier Mustang today .keep in mind that the new Sonic Mustangs are a slab body and heavier so you may want to [like me]pick up a used Bullet like this ,a much nicer guitar imho

I have it and used it for the last 4 years and it's pretty damn good man, though it has the intonation problem you mentioned. Plus, the "loosy" feel that the strings have I personally hate it, so instead I use either 11 gauge or 10-52, which makes it really nice to play, it feels like a solid guitar. The only complain on the video is that it's spelled SQUIER, not SQUIRE, lol.
The video has been up for 8 months and I think you’re the first person to notice the misspelling in the title! I didn’t notice at all.. oops. In the U.K. we spell a lot of words that way, like “centre” instead the “center” in American English, so I must have accidentally spelled it “Squire” out of habit. 😂

I have the same one - eve the color is the same. I love mine! Use it way more than my Fender Mustang (MEX), just because i'm not so worried about dinging it or scratching the paint.
A Squier Bullet Mustang is like $189. If they did a basic quick setup it would add $50-100 to the price. I can see pros and cons to both opinions, but if you want to buy it for $189...you have to do the setup yourself. I bought a Bullet Tele and it's thin and light too. After a setup, it's a lot of fun.
Yeah, a big thing that keeps the price of “budget guitars” down is that they are thrown out of the factory as quickly as possible. That can mean some questionable spots in the finish, less than perfect frets, and definitely means a set up is required. 👍
I picked up one of these for $80 along with a les Paul Junior that needs a lot of work. But, my two biggest issues were the weight and the intonation. I solved the intonation issue as you did with the washers and now it playable. The guitar is really light, almost too light for my taste. My go to guitar is my Squire Tele which has a really good weight and balance. The Mustang feels weird, but it is easy on the shoulder. My recommendation would be to buy this used and mod it out, which is what I'm going to do.
I had the same issue on my Sonic Mustang- had to dremel the intonation screws so they didn't rub the low E and the A strings. I find the neck is very "bendy" and too much pressure on it either forward or back seems to pull or push it out of tune.
I've had mine a couple of years now and I like it, but I have an intonation issue, as well that I need to have looked at. The G string at the 2nd fret sounds out of tune when I play a D chord.
The yellow is awesome, just my opinion.
With the tone knobs down, all the pickup settings sound the same!
I just purchased a 2022 bullet Mustang. The intonation was very good...not perfect...but good. I was able to easily get it set with no spacers. So maybe that's been addressed.
The frets, on the other hand, were very poor. 1/64th up to 1/8 th sprouts on each side and very sharp. I planned all along to replace the pickups.
Do not buy this guitar if you can't or won't have it set up properly. With a little work, it will play fine.
Some luthier did a review on it and he didn’t have any issues.
Would you say that shorter scale guitars have a particular kind of sound? I'm kind of hearing in the tone of this is what I like about the sound of this cheaper Les Paul Studio that I have when I compare it to the sound of my Telecaster Deluxe, which of course has the longer scale length. I realize there are other differences between these guitars, of course, but I'm just curious as to what scale length specifically does to the sound. I thought this difference was the result of one being bolt on construction and the other not, but now I'm unsure. I don't have a ton of other guitars to test this thesis out on.
Short scale guitars generally have a warmer, less detailed sound because the shorter length of the strings dulls some of the harmonic information you’d get with a clearer full scale sound. This isn’t a bad thing at all though! It’s just a slightly different tone and to be honest I actually quite like it. Works really well in certain genres. Remember the strings are less responsive on a short scale too, which could effect the way you play, which could also change tone. 👍

Would you recommend other Squier guitars for beginner? I'm interested in the mustang but i dont want to tinker much and want something playable right out of the box,
Personally, probably not. I think you’ll get a much better instrument for a similar price from brands like Yamaha or Ibanez 👍
Wich saddles brand did you use on the birige? where did you buy them? Sorry for my english.
They are all stock. All parts on the guitar came with it in the box. I didn’t change anything 🙂

Thanks! I’m actually just using the stock amp sims and pedals in Logic Pro X. Takes a little bit of fiddling with, but you can get some nice stuff out of them eventually 👍

Im thinking of getting one to play round the house and the short scale may help Train my multiple wrist fractures, i can't play strats well anymore but les pauls i can
So a Les Paul has a 24 3/4 inch scale length. So does the SG (which I have), and I can say the 24 inch scale of the Mustang does in fact feel shorter than those. It’s strange how much of a difference 3/4 of an inch can make. Could be a good option for you 👍
Am I insane or does the middle position sound very similar to the neck only sound?
I must be lucky, mine is fine intonation wise but the frets...yeah....but hey, it's cheap for a reason i suppose . I like the washer solution !
At some point I'll take the neck off and give it a good seeing-to ....I'm also contemplating reshaping the headstock to a tele shape partly because i prefer the tele shape but also i think the large style F headstock looks goofy on such a small guitar . I like the pups , they go nice with dirt but my pots feel a bit scratchy so they'll go, its not like good pots cost much anyway .
Not sure if you were unlucky or I was lucky but my Mustang was playable out of box. Mine feels like it may of had a setup in the shop and that includes the intonation too. The one thing I do think is the included strings are too light for this short scale. That may add to what may appear to be problems with the intonation, as you strum a chord and you slightly bend the strings out tune etc.
From what I’ve seen online, the issues I had are quite common. Many people had I much worse than I did, so maybe we’re both lucky 😂
@@tommytwaddle8601 totally disagree, the majority of these are better than you say. I have two friends who own three and they were ready to play out of the box, and still play perfect.
@@44scoots I’m of course just going by my own experience with it and what I saw lots of people saying in forums for this review. I’m glad your two friends enjoy their guitars though. Some seem to get lucky and other don’t I guess. 🤷♂️

If you don’t know how to fix the bridge’s intonation issues then unfortunately no, not really. I would recommend a Yamaha Pacifica similar to the one I showed in the video instead. There isn’t a huge price difference and you get much more for just a bit more money! 👍

Where did you bought it?
This will solve the bridge issues, I got cheap Chinese roller saddles, and shim the neck.i also put a 12 dollar tusq nut on it. Kept everything else stays in tune dramatically better.not much invested.
I hear changing string gauge can cause intonation problems.
I bought one of these yellow models recently and haven't noticed any of the problems that you've mentioned. I don't know why it came with such light strings though - I think it really needs 11s. I suppose they think it's easier for beginners to play?
Ahh nice! Not even the scratchy frets? They seem to be quite a common issue. And yes, the strings I found to be rather bizarre. I put 10s on but I think you’re right about it needing 11s.
@@tommytwaddle8601 Do you mean at the fret ends (fret sprout) or on the top of each fret? The frets are fine along the sides of the neck and I've not noticed any other problems yet. However, I need to check with a fret rocker to see whether there's any high or low frets and I'm sure they could benefit from some work.
I'm not a beginner and I'm happy to set it up a bit myself, particularly as it wasn't very expensive. It does seem as if there's some inconsistency with these guitars though so it might not be a great choice for someone taking up the instrument. That said, I don't know whether there are other models in the same price range that are more reliable.
@@ahumanonplanetearth The fret ends were a tad sharp in a few places, but I was planning on rounding the fret board edges slightly anyway so I was planning on working on them anyway. For me the main issue was how scratchy they were on bends. I had to give them a serious polishing up. Plays great now though 👍
Yes I’d say just from these comments that inconsistency seems to be the main issue.
I think y’all are just getting bad ones. I have a fender, a PRS, and that Squier. That one is the best guitar that I have. The pickups sounded very well, the bridge was good, but it needed a little bit of adjustment, and the tuning pegs worked very well. The neck was a little dry, but it was good.
That seems to be the case. There’s not a lot of quality control on these budget guitars and they’re rushed out of the factory quickly. You either get lucky or you don’t. 🤷♂️ I’m actually glad I got a bit of a questionable one so I could inform people properly rather than just saying “It’s great!” and then someone not have the same experience. 👍

Maybe.. 🤔 You’ll still be able to practice scales, chords, and generally learn to get comfortable with the instrument. Understand that some electric guitars are acoustically louder than others though.. some can be quite quiet. If that’s the case, a small practice amp isn’t very expensive anyway. 👍
If you’re literally brand new to guitar then a classical/Spanish style guitar is a good option. The nylon strings are a lot easier on your fingers than an electric or a full size acoustic. 🙂 You can get them quite cheap and see if the guitar is the right instrument for you.

Same issue with very rough frets in the new sonic series as well. Out of the box the strings were like 5mm or more above the fretboard, but it might be due to the weather and cold temperature. Fret was not too bad, not to good either. Polishing is deffinitely a must otherwise it's unplayable. Body is paper thin as well. The best thing is the price.

@@furkangungor880 because the frets are otherwise scratchy and not comfortable to play. Take a cloth and car polishing paste, cover the neck with tape and gently polish the frets then clean it up. It's easy and worth doing.

I always thought the bridge was cheese on those,at least could of been a string through. wish they had a mustang bridge.
First thing I did was replace the saddles, the tuners on the other hand I found to be much, much better than they have any right to be.
I bought my bullet mustang 2 years ago and it had exactly the same issues, I see they don't address them with the time. Man, the screws issue it's just ridiculous! I had 3 touching the strings so I choose to trash all 6 intonation screws and replace them with ISO M3 screws bought at a hardware store, with different lenghts in mm; they fit perfectly and problem solved without sanding, but why-oh-why they sell them like that? It's such a pity that it cannot function as a proper guitar from the box.
It is a ridiculous issue. What baffles me is that in almost every review I’ve seen people say “It’s great right out of the box”! For us it wasn’t the end of the world because we know how to solve the issue, but I can imagine a non-guitarist parent buying this for a beginner kid and that would be a disaster.

@@emiliocurbelo8891 It’s just a shame because the guitar is great after the issue is fixed. Unfortunately a lot of people buying this will be as beginner/intermediate guitarists and won’t know what to do with it.
yep you guys, this is dead on. I bought one of these for my daughter, and the intonation and long screw issue drives me nuts. I've been trying to source a good drop in bridge replacement, not just for a better fit for intonation adjustments but also one that allows easier re-stringing. You have to bend the end and then twist the string to get it up the channel of the saddle; or turn the saddle on its side and use a small stick or something to guide it along. It's really maddening. I mean, it's a decent sounding guitar otherwise.

Yeah I think that’s the case for all budget guitars. They’re thrown out of the factory so fast that a good set up and basic maintenance is pretty much essential.
I had a j mascis Jazzmaster and that wasn't the case with the case at all. Quality and finish was unbelievable

i agree tung oil on the neck is utter insanity, and nobody does that... tung oil is a finish it hardens it never evaporates.
What amp are you using please?

I can’t stand the fender hard tail bridge and saddles. I hate how they feel and I find they have way more intonation issues than others IME.
The FSR is the best
Most problems are solvable. Honestly, take the guitar to a good shop where they can set it up right for you. By that i mean a guitar builder, not just a guitar seller

I’m in the U.K.. Make sure you look at the “Bullet Competition Mustang”. The competition ones come with a stripe and a few extra colours compared to the standard bullet mustangs I believe. 👍

You are nuts I have one of these guitars and modded it some its an amazing guitar.
I can only go by my experience with the instrument they sent me and then corroborate that with what people are saying in forums, but I’m glad you got a good one! 👍 I get the impression they’re quite hit and miss. Never know what you’re going to get with guitar at this price range.
You are extremely wrong about it not being playable out of the box. It defiently is. The strings are also fine.
I can only go by my own experience with the guitar and collate that with what I’ve seen others saying online. Mine definitely wasn’t good before doing the work. I’m glad you got a good one and had a really positive experience though 👍
