There's a phenomenon I've observed, and I'm sure I'm far from the only one to notice, where the average person hearing a song listens to hooks and choruses (which are often but not always the same thing) but verses don't register at all. A lot of people don't even know Rik Rok's character in the song decides to apologize to his girlfriend and calls Shaggy's character out on his advice being complete nonsense at the end, because all they remember is "it wasn't me" and they don't even pick up on the key detail that Shaggy is playing the idiot friend who gives terrible advice. Then of course there's "I'll be watching you", "You're beautiful" and who knows how many other songs about creeps that are widely misunderstood as love songs. English is my second language, but I knew what Chocolate Rain was about the first time I heard it and thought it was disturbing how people were treating it like a joke and apparently not even getting the very straight forward message of it. 🍏😎👍🍏😎😎👍 #ChocolateRain Some stay dry and others feel the pain A baby born will die before the sin The school books say it can't be here again The prisons make you wonder where it went. Build a tent and say the world is dry Zoom the camera out and see the lie. Forecast to be falling yesterday; Only in the past is what they say. Raised your neighborhood insurance rates Makes us happy livin' in a gate Made me cross the street the other day Made you turn your head the other way History quickly crashing through your veins Using you to fall back down again Seldom mentioned on the radio It's the fear your leaders call control Worse than swearing worse than calling names Say it publicly and you're insane No one wants to hear about it now Wish real hard it goes away somehow Makes the best of friends begin to fight But did they know each other in the light? Every February washed away Stays behind as colors celebrate The same crime has a higher price to pay The judge and jury swear it's not the face Dirty secrets of economy Turns that body into GDP. The bell curve blames the baby's DNA But test scores are how much the parents make Flippin' cars in France the other night Cleans the sewers out beneath Mumbai 'Cross the world and back it's all the same. nick - I vividly remember when the song was released and the critical reception that followed. Most people commenting and reacting to the song's video back then were simply yapping about his voice, appearance, etc. I'm not thinking I'm better than anyone. I'm simply repeating my observation from 2007 and comparing it to today's commentary on the video. I never said that some people didn't know that the song was about justice and humanity. I was referring to what the MASSES were thinking based on their own reactions. I wasn't speaking about what you--a complete stranger--INDIVIDUALLY thought about the song. PS: I don't need UA-cam to "feel smart". I'm accomplished in REAL life. Perhaps you should strive for the same.

Some stay dry and others feel the pain
A baby born will die before the sin
The school books say it can't be here again
The prisons make you wonder where it went.
Build a tent and say the world is dry
Zoom the camera out and see the lie.
Forecast to be falling yesterday;
Only in the past is what they say.
Raised your neighborhood insurance rates
Makes us happy livin' in a gate
Made me cross the street the other day
Made you turn your head the other way
History quickly crashing through your veins
Using you to fall back down again
Seldom mentioned on the radio
It's the fear your leaders call control
Worse than swearing worse than calling names
Say it publicly and you're insane
No one wants to hear about it now
Wish real hard it goes away somehow
Makes the best of friends begin to fight
But did they know each other in the light?
Every February washed away
Stays behind as colors celebrate
The same crime has a higher price to pay
The judge and jury swear it's not the face
Dirty secrets of economy
Turns that body into GDP.
The bell curve blames the baby's DNA
But test scores are how much the parents make
Flippin' cars in France the other night
Cleans the sewers out beneath Mumbai
'Cross the world and back it's all the same.
Angels cry and shake their heads in shame
Lifts the ark of paradise in sin
Which part do you think you're livin' in?
More than marchin' more than passing law
Remake how we got to where we are.

damn this is woke
Naweed King I drank urine
Leahm Miller Yeah? Please explain it to me, verse by verse, because it looks and sounds like somebody decided to stick a whole bunch of words together in the hope that someone would think it profound. I’ve studied the English language for over 25 years and while I do admire Tay Zonday, his bizarre lyrical ‘style’ makes NO sense to me.
I mean he liiiiiiiiiiiiiiiterally has a video explaining the lyrics. But sure ask me about it I guess 🤷
Was trying to tell people this back when it dropped. Substance matters more than sizzle.
Please do charlotte takes a tumble next. Pleaseee
You mean Scarlett
Omg! I remember that video, it's still funny today😂😂😂
Omg yes!!!! Lol
“....and I can’t helppppp but think.”
So you’re saying it isn’t about rain made out of chocolate? My life is a lie.
Im always amazed that people didn’t understand what this song was about. I understood as a child. But maybe that’s how it is to grow up black you know more stuff about racism than adults.
He sold out big time for that Dr. Pepper bag. All of a sudden, that song wasn't so political. LOL
Gene Williams in his defense he most likely signed the deal not knowing they wouldn't like any of the original pieces he wrote. By then he probably owed them a commercial and they pitched that he did Chocolate Rain
A man needs to eat
Sold out, by sold out you mean achieved his goal of making money from his craft? What did he sell out from?
Panama Jack good point, O just see it as him trying to to be become relevant for another 15 minutes.
I thought this might be a middle aged female, so the voice took me aback.
This guy is a genius, gentleman and a very well spoken person. Seems really chill.. Chocolate Rain 👍🏾🔥🔥
“More woke than we thought” he went viral over a song that was about systematic racism lmao
But I dont think many people realized that that's what's it about. They just say this dude with a nice voice that didnt match his face and the fact that he moved away from the mic when he need to breath. Most didnt see past that.
I thought he just made meth and fried chicken on AMC. Now I hear he’s an amazing singer, too? Man, Mr. Fring really has it all.
The man you're thinking of is giancarlo esposito
🤣😂😂😂🤣😂🤣🤣😂🤣🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣🤣🤣😂🤣🤣🤣🤣😂🤣🤣
Respect to you Tay. You have success but you still seem humble & pleasantly human. Wishing you every success as you continue to move forward with your entertainment career 😃👍🏻🤣🌟🍉
He look like micheal Jackson and Janet Jackson
LMAO
Lmaooo
Randy Jackson!
Well thats why he got famous fast we lost Michael Jackson and got Tay Zonday
More like Tito
Tay Zonday gets memed a lot but he seems like a genuinely cool guy
anyone else thought dude was indian the whole time turns out he’s mixed hahah
Hint... Hint...
How to make a India?
Well the fact that he went viral for a song about racism against black people in the USA should have thrown the whole Indian thing out the window
"Tay Zonday’s 'Chocolate Rain' Was More Woke Than We Realized"
According to whom? The lyrics from the very beginning are pretty transparently about race relations and its lack of equality.
Wow...I mean never paid attention to the Lyrics..smh..was speaking knowledge..
I remember when Coca Cola used that song to advertise their “Cherry chocolate” pop man me and my best friends died!!! That commercial came on like a world premiere for a Beyoncé video! 😭... This guy is awesome!
I’ve been calling this man Chocolate Rainbow for my whole life 🤦🏾♀️
