My father carried a hi-power as an officer with the British Army in WW2. Somewhere in Holland his Hi-power lies, he came home wounded but his side arm was lost in action in the marshes.
I've seen two of these locally. The first one I passed on because the finish wasn't great and the trigger was a bit off. The second one was beautiful and the trigger was crisp. I own it and love it.
My late father had an original Belgian made one many years ago. Sadly, it was sold by my mother after my dad's untimely passing from cancer. I wish I had this and his old Marlin 336W in 30-30.
I've had one of the SA 35 pistols for a month or so. So far 950 rounds through it without a single failure to extract or feed. The finish, like the one in this review, is beautiful without a single mark or blemish. This has quickly become one of my favorite carry pistols. I carried one of the Belgium Hi-Powers for years as a police detective. That one gave me some hammer bite; not a problem at all with the new design.
I've got a small scar from the hammer bite, having used the Hi Power in the UK military. I added Pachmayr grips, which helped a little. I have lot of nostalgia for the Browning. This new version would be top of my to-buy list if I lived somewhere that pistol ownership was legal.
@@joshuaroberts2837 I'm an expat in the Philippines, and foreigners cannot get a firearms license here. That said, unlike the US, the Philippines is not an innately violent country and there's little or no threat that necessitates gun ownership. Good situational awareness, astute thinking, discretion, and not making enemies ensures safety in most places.

Great review. I always liked Springfield Armory products. Bought a couple of their 1911 45 acp in the 80's. Prices were great. Needed a little tuning, but reliable firearms. Will definitely check out the Browning High Power. Beautiful classic firearm. Long live the republic.
Surprisingly, the missus approached me wanting a SA-35, which I found odd because she's usually not into these Classic Style (e.g., 1911, Beretta, etc.) full-size hammer and/or DA/SA type pistols - she's more into the modern poly/striker types systems. So I told her I've had one on pre-order for the past month and it she didn't want it, I would take it. She told me to keep my mitts off of her weapon. LOL. I would have picked one up down the road for $899 (which is probably worth the money) but I'll wait until the preorders ship (probably not until Spring or Summer because I had paying more than full-retail. $699 is a damn good price for this weapon. Appreciate you review it.
It seemed like they were always too expensive. Then, a few months before FN officially announced the end of Hi-Power production, my luck changed. I found one at a show - a 1990 polished-blue with target-sights, and a couple tiny match-head sized blemishes. plus the ugliest rotted rubber Pachmyr grips - for $400! A set of decent checkered grips were easy and cheap online and I hardly notice the other flaws. Later, I found the twin to the Hi-Power factory mag online for $15, plus a couple of the MecGar 15 rounders, It's now in a vintage leather Albrecht Kind German police holster I bought cheap back in the '80s for a Luger. until I learned it was actually custom-made for a Hi-Power. Since then, I also picked up an FEG 'Hi-Power'. that's seen a lot more service, for $240.
@@Ed-ig7fj Would that be the FEG P9R? Looks like a Hi-Power, but DA/SA trigger and slightly larger frame, so mags aren't interchangeable. They say internally, these have more in common with the S&W 59. Ironically, I paid as much as my Browning, for my 'minty' condition P9R.
I bought my Browning High Power for under $400 in 1986 after I left the army. Still have it but I've retired it as it is no longer made and I dont want to break anything on it. I had ir Cerakoted and tuned by Terry Tussey in 2014.
@@sunbeam8866 I had one of those, and it was a VERY good gun. The only thing wrong with these guns is getting extra magazines, you can't find them anywhere and Hi-Power magazines will not fit in this gun.
Back in the 1970s, I think it was around 77 because I wasn’t in country for most of the 1970s, at least after 1972, anyway back in that time period, I knew a fella, a good fella as a matter of fact, who by his own admission had commandeered an entire shipload of Browning hi power’s right off the dock Straight from Belgium 🇧🇪 , we had an entire room full of them from the floor to the ceiling, beautiful weapons in walnut cases, or at least they look well and I could’ve been something else but very real craftsmanship in the cases, the interior were like a red velvet, and each Browning hi power included a cleaning kit, he was selling them for $100 apiece, since then I’ve rarely seen a browning hi power, Springfield is an excellent manufacturer, great video is always there Sootch ! 👍 👍
I like the removal of the matgazine diconnect trigger lock, and the superior trigger. Classic pistol which still holds up today, even with an old design and high price. I personally like the rubber Crimson Trace laser grips. This was my bedroom go to gun for many years. It looks and feels really nice. Once again, John M. Browning was a genious.
There's something to be said about a classic handgun with wood grips for home defense. It may be "fudd," but when a jury sees it, you'll be glad you didn't use the alien blaster with punisher grips and grenade tube on the picatinny
I removed it on my Browning Mk 3. I have trigger reset problems. Yes, I've tried different after market springs. Maybe it just needs to break in? I did replace the hammer, sear, and hammer(was tang-style). All of these seemed to fit ok.
I've got an Argentina made FM Rosario Hi Power that is an exact copy made under license from FN Herstal. It was made in the mid 1980s and has had the mag disconnect safety removed. It is a great shooter and I'm glad that Springfield Armory is making Hi Powers. I might get one to have as a backup. 🙂
Interesting I picked up the same weapon in the FN refurbished box straight from the factory. I bought the gun with numbers matching magazines in the refurbished box from FN with certificate to boot at a hardware store for $250 back in 1999. I don't think they knew what they had.
I am very glad Springfield Armory will produce this excellent firearm. I will offer a PERSONAL comment, however; I prefer the CZ 75B series to the BHP, although a true SA trigger (and especially this one the magazine disconnect eliminated) is hard to beat. The CZ 75B fills essentially the same role, and I have found - after many years’ experiences - its quality, reliability, durability, ergonomics and accuracy to be simply outstanding (plus it has greater capacity, not that that’s a major differentiator with either of the fine autoloader’s capacities).
I agree, I carried a CZ75B as my EDC in South Africa for many years and never had an issue with it, I used to put at least 50 rounds a week through it at the range and never had an issue, my best friend carried a BHP and as nice as it was to shoot he had numerous parts failures and eventually retired it in favor of a Glock 19...
Its tough to beat any CZ. They are built like tanks and run like a greyhound, eat any ammo and hit that middle ground on cost. A new 75 B was around $550 when I bought my SPO1.
Sootch Glad to see you shoot the SA-35 and This will be my first gun when I graduate from College and also Brownells said that If I can recall that the SA-35 can interchange parts with the original Hi-Power
I waited three years to get one. Finally got one over a year ago, and it was worth the wait. I have put a lot of rounds through it with no proplems. A few weeks ago I saw one at a gun dealers. Last week I bought it. The first one i bought had one magazine and a small case. The new one had two cases and three magazines.

Good on sa for picking up the hp. I have had a sa 1911 for over 20 years and it has always shot perfect. I'll give them a little more time to work out the bugs and I'm getting one
Considering when the original Hi-power was designed this gun is legendary in so many ways and a true icon. I am extremely glad Springfield has decided to produce this tweaked version, with the well known faults subtly rectified. Although a slightly longer beavertail would be nice. 😎🇦🇺👍

Same. Higher model number for sure. Springfield has the best 1911s for the money and their Hellcat/XD have generally run flawlessly, so I’ll cut them some slack for launching this in a year when supplies and inventory were whack.
@@TheRancor53 Xd's are definitely not flawless. The Springfield 1911's are ok but as a brand Springfield is over rated. They don't innovate anything and they definitely fail at a higher rate than most equally priced firearms. Most high volume shooters do not choose Springfield for good reasons.
@@lukedemello2077 High volume shooters and trainers I know do, popular choice for instructors (not my cup of tea) I’ve run my TRP 1911 through thousands of rounds & a Korean War vet at a local range still has the OG frame and slide from his 200,000 rd count Springfield M1911 (just keeps changing out internals and barrel). I’m not a Hellcat fan, but even the harshest critics of Springfield don’t seem to knock reliability on it either.
The US government Springfield guns have nothing to do with modern Springfield. Any bring back 1911's would make it on my bucket list. Springfield doesn't manufacture the Hellcat they just import them and jack up the prices. The original Xd guns were imported as Hs2000s and were value guns in the 225 dollar range ! Springfield slapped the XD moniker on it and doubled the price!
You make the best gun videos on UA-cam! I love the way you thoroughly cover the gun functionality. It’s almost like going to the gun store and handling it myself. You always cover the features I’m curious about and fill me in on details I didn’t know. Then you take it to the range to discuss accuracy, recoil, and muzzle flip. It’s very helpful to watch you shoot it. I watch your hand grip and muzzle flip. I like that you shoot weak hand as well so I can see how the gun responds. I also like to see your daughter shoot (I have one too) because I want to see how well a female can handle certain guns for size and power. I bet she is a good shot! Anyway, please keep making gun videos. You are GREAT at it!!

The original GP-35 DID have a round commander hammer. The tang hammer didn't come around until MUCH later, well after WWII and typically on the US import models. Most military and police contract models had the ring hammer.
One of the best guns I ever had was a custom Hi Power built by Jim Hoag. I gave it to my brother for a birthday present. Great carry gun and a very slim shape.
I had multiple failure to extracts in the first 150 rounds I put through the pistol. I sent it back to Springfield Armory, they sent it back a week later with a new extractor spring, extractor pin and they polished the chamber. In the next 200 rounds, I had one failure to extract. I haven’t shot it since then.
It is interesting how Springfield and Girsan both dropped a new version of a Hi-Power. I no sooner watched Honest Outlaw's review of the Girsan P-35 and your video for the SA-35 followed it. I have a thing for SAO hammer fired pistols and well the Browning Hi-Power was always a fan favorite in my shooting family circle. If you think about it Browning made the very first 2011 pistol when he made the Hi-Power in 1935. Granted their are several differences between the 1911 and the HP-35 platform especially in the controls, but someone who is accustomed to a 1911 pistol back in the day when Browning first designed the HP-35 would find it to be relatively familiar in feel with a greater capacity and a lighter recoil impulse. Having grown up shooting both, I would say that a person could shoot them back to back and not have to worry about how to hold and point them as they really do aim almost identically. The only thing one would have to learn is the trigger because the HP-35 was not nearly as refined IMO. Glad to see that this model of firearm has not been completely abandoned. It is ironic how one man's designs are the most coveted and copied.
I carried a Browning High Power in the army. Loved it, just fit so well in the hand and so natural to point and shoot, this looks like a faithful reproduction. I notice that one you can dry fire without a magazine in. The original would only fire with a mag in it, although if your finger was long enough you could put a finger up the magazine well and trip the catch and fire it, or trip the hammer sear directly.
I just bought one, haven't had a chance to shoot it, but Iove the overall quality and that it is made in the USA! I own a Browning HP that I bought in the early 90's. It's a beautiful gun, but I like the improvements on the new SA35. I am glad Springfield is continuing to produce this classic firearm.
If you want a 1950-60's vintage one, look for a Canadian Arsenals Longbranch Ont. model (pusser crowfoot stamping mark will be one clue) as the machining processes resulted in them, even with the mag lock-out, having an under 6lb. trigger pull and cleaner trigger break than others of the same genre.
Really great review Sootch. I think we all dig the longer overviews. And I’m sure you catch flak for any gun review - it’s like men talking about wives….no body agrees on anything. the browning HP is accurate no question about it, I have one and its a collectors item on my part and envy of others since its not made in the US, was amazed by Springfield bringing it back to life and even better I heard, but in this era where the shooting sport has emerged, I feel it won't sell, coz there isn't a division that it would fit in, its not double action too, though its tempting to have one, id rather keep what's original than spend on a newer version or id rather spend on a different brand that I can use to compete and at the same time carry. So reviving a legend in a generation that isn't his anymore is the case of the Springfield sa35
I love, LOVE Hi powers. And, while I totally understand that a new launch can have some kinks, I've never understood why gun manufactureres don't immediately admit to the problem, announce that it's been fixed, and offer a free repair to anyone with an early pistol. I was looking forward to getting one of these as a backup to my T-Series Belgian Hi Power. Now I'll have to wait until I THINK the extraction problems are fixed....and the price of available guns gets back to the MSRP. Nice honest review!
I had decided not to buy any more guns, I'm 75 and have more than I need, then Springfield Armory comes out with this! I may have to make an exception, so far, I haven't been able to find one, I guess I'll have to be patient till the dealers get some in stock. 🙂
It’s not the hammer spur that bites it’s the part of the hammer just below the spur that pinches the skin that goes up to the edge of the beaver tail. I’ve had both types of hammers and both bite the same. I did modify a hammer below the spur to provide some slight clearance and that worked. I would bet that SA did the same. To compare the profile drop the hammer on both and see how much of the hammer below the spur is visible from the side and how much is hidden by the slide.
Excellent review, A to A+. Covered all of the important areas, moved though the video fast, not leaving out any data of importance. I recently decided to purchase a High Power in the near future, now ill get the SA 35.
For those of us who appreciate the slim and other features of the HP, this is a high compliment. They have added improvements. I would like to see them offer two additional features in the spirit of modernization: add a lower rail and a optic sight platform to the slide. With the improved safety lever, I don't have a problem with single actions when you have a positive action safety. Thanks for the video.
Totally agree on the positive action safety. On adding rails, I think that if a nation’s military called for it in a production req, Springfield would happily add it (and may eventually anyway). They’re just a simple, beautiful pistol designed by a master and feel a lot better in the hand than the CZ, IMHO.
I have the browning anniversary edition 13+1 and I look forward to getting mine in and shooting it as a comparison. They’re hard to get at the moment but my local gun shop is trying to get some in. Thanks for the honest review Don !! Looks like a nice gun.

Springfield fixed everything that was wrong with the FA and the Girsan. It's a sweet, low-profile, reliable weapon. Well made and solid. I put a few hundred rounds through mine with zero malfunctions or jams. Pretty much a perfect pistol, and super reasonable for the price.
Loved the review and pointing out the early production shortcomings. I’m sure SA will get these ironed out. Btw--I love the out takes at the end of your reviews! They really make my day.
I was shooting my Browning FN Hi-Power yesterday. It is always fun to shoot, and it is more accurate than I am. I do make sure to wear a glove on my right hand to avoid the hammer bite. The glossy blue on my FN is lovely. --Old Guy
Looks impressive. Happy Springfield is making them. However, those 3 different malfunctions in less than 1000 rounds give me pause. This is a time proven design, that really should be flawless at this point. I own a large amount of 9 mm semi automatics. Beretta, Sig, S&W, Bersa, Taurus, and Kahr. Honestly none had feeding or extraction issues at all. My benchmark for total reliability is 2000 rounds through each, which all have achieved I will wait a while before considering adding one of these to the stable.
Mec-Gar makes factory magazines for many gun manufacturers including S&W, CZ?, and many more. I have a HI Power that I purchased in the mid 70's and was manufactured in Belgium. It looks like Springfield Armory made some necessary improvements to this new offering. I had an annoying problem with my HP with feeding certain types of hollowpoints. It also wouldn't extract the last fired case. I had the barrel throated and the feed ramp polished and the that took care of both problems. My HP will now feed and extract anything that I want to shoot through it. I also had an extended safety lever installed as well as a yellow plastic insert in the front sight.
Excellent review. I saw one at a Springfield Armory Day at our local gun shop. They only had one from the factory for display. I looks very well designed and built. The 1,000 test was great. Thanks for the video.
I have to say at the start, my rock island tcm22 with the 9mm barrel shot a tad better, but only for the 1st 50 rounds. Then my sa-35 performed flawlessly. At 25 yards, I was holding 1-3 inch groups. My ria was similar. Only my canik tp9sfx with red dot did a little better, but then it dies have the best trigger of the 3.
I carry a 35th Anniversary Edition everyday. I'm very interested in getting my hands on one of these Springfield as soon as they become more available.
I’ve heard from several reviewers/actual owners who put over 600-700 rounds through one of these are having extraction issues. Most people, I guess won’t put that many rounds through one of these, but that seems to be a very common issue. Also, there are some finish quality issues being reported as well. No way I’m pay hundreds over MSRP for something with issues like this. I will wait for the hype to fall off.
@@wrongfullyaccused7139 that’s because it’s a Browning. Much better quality. I would like to compare a Browning extractor to a Springfield extractor. Personally, I don’t think Springfield Armory quality could ever compare to Browning quality.
All the specific issues aside, I have to agree with those of you who have said you'll wait until all the issues have been worked out. I usually do that with any new firearm or vehicle etc... I'll let someone else discover if there are issues and what they are. Springfield will address them and then it will be a dependable pistol. As a southpaw, I'd like to see this offered with an ambi safety but that isn't a hard fix in the aftermarket. Garand Thumb in his review said that the grips aren't very comfortable after a couple of hundred rounds, but again, there is an easy aftermarket fix for that. In a year or 3 I think I'll pick one up. I've always wanted to own one. Beautiful weapon.
I love that during these crazy ammo shortage times, the Ammo makers are just so readily happy and quick to hand out cases and cases and cases of the stuff to these channels while we just would love to go shoot even just 50 rounds here and there but have a damn hard chance of even getting to do so. Kind of irksome.
@@Electricianarchery oh I know right?! So dang frustrating paying more for a case of 9mm than what a case of 5.56mm was before Covid. I can find it… it’s just that price tag is so ridiculous. The Black Friday before Covid hit…. A 1,000 round 9mm case at the farm and fleet stores up north was $140!!!!!
I was going to get another 1911, but don’t see .45 coming back in numbers. Then SA (damn you guys!) came out with this little beauty. I’ve stocked up on 9mm so it is nice to have a gun you can shoot. I’m probably going to pick one up. SA is making some great weapons and I already own several.
The safety, sights and trigger are nice upgrades to the original design. I have a FEG clone that I recently acquired and love that it fills the itch of hi power for me and mainly sticks to the original design but if you want an upgraded version this may be a good option. The original safety and trigger leave much to be desired but the trigger is much better since I got rid of the magazine disconnect safety. I'm not a fan of Springfield but i can see the appeal for those who may want one. I'm sure once they work out the kinks itll be a good shooter 👍
This is the first semiautomatic that I used in competition. It is one of the most comfortable pistols to fire save the hammer bite. I tap this with a scar on my right hand webbing. We always added extended ambi safeties, Millet sights, and Bar-Sto barrels. Ran great with all types of ammunition. They are accurate and all steel construction soaks up a bit of recoil. I regret selling them every time I see these new SA35s in videos.
I have my Uncles, FN high power from 1943 with the German markings he took from a German Officer in Italy. He served from Anzio thru the end of the war… with a purple heart. I have shot it once, it will go to my son when i am gone.
Both are iconic pieces of history and are the grandfather and great grandfathers of all the guns we see today. John Browning really brought solid safe and reliable designs to the market. The man was a firearms genius!
Officers carried such a high reputation as did the British SAS in northen Ireland and andy McNabb told of a fellow operator had two people following him down a short cut so before the could grab him he rolled forward pulled the Browning high power then slotted both who on checking were terrorists carrying weapons . So reliable he trusted the weapon to work. This is in his second book about his life as child then his army life .
Nice gun. I would like to get one. But as much as I like the HP, I like the CZ 75 SAO (Single Action Only) model. It has all the custom features that a Novak Custom HP has. The single action trigger is great. It already has a 'beaver tail' type tang/grip. It has ambidextrous larger thumb Safeties and ambidextrous slide releases. And it's easy to change the sights. Unfortunately they are hard to find. I bought a CZ85 (same as CZ75 with upgrades. Then I got the parts from CZ Custom to make it SAO with the larger Safeties. I will buy the new SA when the prices come down. And then upgrade it with Cylinder & Slide Parts. 🍻 cheers
The CZ 85 is a 75 with bilateral frame-mounted safeties and bilateral slide catch/release levers. Since CZ has discontinued the 85, the SAO, and stainless steel models, CZ should just make a stainless steel 85 or stainless steel SAO.
I remember reading (maybe G&A?) about Browning making a .40 s&w version of the HighPower. To do that, they didn't just change the barrel, spring, and mag; but actually brought Suaive (? spelling) back to redesign the entire pistol.
Yeah, the extractor issues kinda kill this gun for me. Would love one if SA will fix it in the future. also I don't like the inability of keeping a light on it. Sure it's probably mean't to just be a range gun I just strongly believe that all guns should be fighting guns.
Not all fighting guns “NEED” a light. One always needs a one hand held light at minimum. Is a gun mounted light nice, yea but is it necessary ? Absolutely not. See some comments for confirmation.
First thing to do with this firearm is to completely disassemble it , polish the slide rails , the feed ramp, the chamber . then diligently work the action while listening to relaxing music. Smooth those contact surfaces.. Now remove the extractor and polish the slot it rides in.. for some reason, the extractor has always been a thorn in the design of this sidearm.
Kudos to you for making sure Dieudonné Saive is not forgotten. He was responsible for the double row magazine and was also the designer of the FN FAL. I think he's bburied in the cemetery at Herstal in Belgium. My Browning Mk III is my bedroom gun. And I REALLY want an SA-35! Beautiful firearm. I don't know when I will be able to get one here in Switzerland. All the best, Rob
The Tisas is not nickel plated. It is stainless steel. To my knowledge, it is the only stainless Hi-Power that exists, at least as far as mass production. I wish that I had picked one up when they were available.
I just brought one of these home. Trigger pull measures well over 6 lbs. consistently. I am going to shoot it and see if it improves but then I will be sending it off for a customization which will bring it to a grail fun level. The gun looks great and I think a custom high power beats a custom 1911 hands down .
I find it odd that if it wasn't produced with, or in conjunction with Tisas that it uses the same design hammer, and more telling, the same slide cuts for sights. Why not use 1911 or better, Hi-Power slide cuts for sights? Just doesn't make sense. Also, I find it interesting that anyone who is *sent* a SA-35 has one that has no issues...but those who have had to buy them (that is, the "little guys" who buy their won guns for review) have a host of issues ranging from parts issues to finish issues. That is, the people who bought the gun report problems/issues and those who were sent/given the gun by SA had nothing but praise. Seems like a disconnect. I get that SA "stands behind" the gun, but it's an 85 year old design...there should be *NO* reason that they ship something that isn't 100%. Then again, I wouldn't shed a tear if SA simply disappeared. Beyond that, a good review as always.
I like this channel, but when the manufacturer sends you guns to review, they never say the gun is junk, I would not buy this. If you did I bet you would not get anymore guns from them to review. So you kind of have to read between the lines.
@@stephenwhite3576 Pretty much. I just saw an ad for EAA's Girsan import MCP35...which oddly now has proper sized HP sight cuts, ambidextrous safety, 15 round mags, and all the other "enhancements" SA is crowing about...for a couple hundred $ less.
I dig it. I think there is a company called BH Solutions or something like that . They are taking this gun and already addressing any short comings and making it smoother and more reliable. I think for $650-700 it’s a good deal. There will be one under my Christmas tree this yr. Looking forward to it
Blooming nice. I carried a Hi-Power for several years and had to leave it behind. I've since owned and carried Glocks and Sigs, and I like them but I miss my Belgian pistol.

I've seen two of these locally. The first one I passed on because the finish wasn't great and the trigger was a bit off. The second one was beautiful and the trigger was crisp. I own it and love it.
Just got mine a couple days ago. Very smooth and easy to shoot. I love the simple and iconic look.
My late father had an original Belgian made one many years ago. Sadly, it was sold by my mother after my dad's untimely passing from cancer. I wish I had this and his old Marlin 336W in 30-30.

I've had one of the SA 35 pistols for a month or so. So far 950 rounds through it without a single failure to extract or feed. The finish, like the one in this review, is beautiful without a single mark or blemish. This has quickly become one of my favorite carry pistols. I carried one of the Belgium Hi-Powers for years as a police detective. That one gave me some hammer bite; not a problem at all with the new design.
Care to update? Any FTE issues?
I have owned a Belgian HP since 1977 and found it to be very reliable at club level shooting.

I've got a small scar from the hammer bite, having used the Hi Power in the UK military. I added Pachmayr grips, which helped a little. I have lot of nostalgia for the Browning. This new version would be top of my to-buy list if I lived somewhere that pistol ownership was legal.

That said, unlike the US, the Philippines is not an innately violent country and there's little or no threat that necessitates gun ownership. Good situational awareness, astute thinking, discretion, and not making enemies ensures safety in most places.

Great review. I always liked Springfield Armory products. Bought a couple of their 1911 45 acp in the 80's. Prices were great. Needed a little tuning, but reliable firearms. Will definitely check out the Browning High Power. Beautiful classic firearm.

Surprisingly, the missus approached me wanting a SA-35, which I found odd because she's usually not into these Classic Style (e.g., 1911, Beretta, etc.) full-size hammer and/or DA/SA type pistols - she's more into the modern poly/striker types systems. So I told her I've had one on pre-order for the past month and it she didn't want it, I would take it. She told me to keep my mitts off of her weapon. LOL. I would have picked one up down the road for $899 (which is probably worth the money) but I'll wait until the preorders ship (probably not until Spring or Summer because I had paying more than full-retail. $699 is a damn good price for this weapon. Appreciate you review it.
When I was a young man, THIS was the pistol I wanted, but even back in the 80's they were expensive and hard to come by.
It seemed like they were always too expensive. Then, a few months before FN officially announced the end of Hi-Power production, my luck changed. I found one at a show - a 1990 polished-blue with target-sights, and a couple tiny match-head sized blemishes. plus the ugliest rotted rubber Pachmyr grips - for $400!
A set of decent checkered grips were easy and cheap online and I hardly notice the other flaws.
Later, I found the twin to the Hi-Power factory mag online for $15, plus a couple of the MecGar 15 rounders,
It's now in a vintage leather Albrecht Kind German police holster I bought cheap back in the '80s for a Luger. until I learned it was actually custom-made for a Hi-Power.
Since then, I also picked up an FEG 'Hi-Power'. that's seen a lot more service, for $240.

@@Ed-ig7fj Would that be the FEG P9R? Looks like a Hi-Power, but DA/SA trigger and slightly larger frame, so mags aren't interchangeable. They say internally, these have more in common with the S&W 59. Ironically, I paid as much as my Browning, for my 'minty' condition P9R.
I bought my Browning High Power for under $400 in 1986 after I left the army. Still have it but I've retired it as it is no longer made and I dont want to break anything on it. I had ir Cerakoted and tuned by Terry Tussey in 2014.
@@sunbeam8866 I had one of those, and it was a VERY good gun. The only thing wrong with these guns is getting extra magazines, you can't find them anywhere and Hi-Power magazines will not fit in this gun.
Back in the 1970s, I think it was around 77 because I wasn’t in country for most of the 1970s, at least after 1972, anyway back in that time period, I knew a fella, a good fella as a matter of fact, who by his own admission had commandeered an entire shipload of Browning hi power’s right off the dock Straight from Belgium 🇧🇪 , we had an entire room full of them from the floor to the ceiling, beautiful weapons in walnut cases, or at least they look well and I could’ve been something else but very real craftsmanship in the cases, the interior were like a red velvet, and each Browning hi power included a cleaning kit, he was selling them for $100 apiece, since then I’ve rarely seen a browning hi power, Springfield is an excellent manufacturer, great video is always there Sootch ! 👍 👍
I like the removal of the matgazine diconnect trigger lock, and the superior trigger. Classic pistol which still holds up today, even with an old design and high price. I personally like the rubber Crimson Trace laser grips. This was my bedroom go to gun for many years. It looks and feels really nice. Once again, John M. Browning was a genious.
There's something to be said about a classic handgun with wood grips for home defense. It may be "fudd," but when a jury sees it, you'll be glad you didn't use the alien blaster with punisher grips and grenade tube on the picatinny

I removed it on my Browning Mk 3. I have trigger reset problems. Yes, I've tried different after market springs. Maybe it just needs to break in? I did replace the hammer, sear, and hammer(was tang-style). All of these seemed to fit ok.
I've got an Argentina made FM Rosario Hi Power that is an exact copy made under license from FN Herstal. It was made in the mid 1980s and has had the mag disconnect safety removed. It is a great shooter and I'm glad that Springfield Armory is making Hi Powers. I might get one to have as a backup. 🙂
Interesting I picked up the same weapon in the FN refurbished box straight from the factory.
I bought the gun with numbers matching magazines in the refurbished box from FN with certificate to boot at a hardware store for $250 back in 1999.

I am very glad Springfield Armory will produce this excellent firearm. I will offer a PERSONAL comment, however; I prefer the CZ 75B series to the BHP, although a true SA trigger (and especially this one the magazine disconnect eliminated) is hard to beat. The CZ 75B fills essentially the same role, and I have found - after many years’ experiences - its quality, reliability, durability, ergonomics and accuracy to be simply outstanding (plus it has greater capacity, not that that’s a major differentiator with either of the fine autoloader’s capacities).
I agree, I carried a CZ75B as my EDC in South Africa for many years and never had an issue with it, I used to put at least 50 rounds a week through it at the range and never had an issue, my best friend carried a BHP and as nice as it was to shoot he had numerous parts failures and eventually retired it in favor of a Glock 19...

Its tough to beat any CZ. They are built like tanks and run like a greyhound, eat any ammo and hit that middle ground on cost.

I waited three years to get one. Finally got one over a year ago, and it was worth the wait. I have put a lot of rounds through it with no proplems. A few weeks ago I saw one at a gun dealers. Last week I bought it. The first one i bought had one magazine and a small case. The new one had two cases and three magazines.

My duty gun was a Pindad P-1 which is an indonesian version of Browning Hi Power 13+1 round
Considering when the original Hi-power was designed this gun is legendary in so many ways and a true icon.
I am extremely glad Springfield has decided to produce this tweaked version, with the well known faults subtly rectified.
Although a slightly longer beavertail would be nice.

Same. Higher model number for sure. Springfield has the best 1911s for the money and their Hellcat/XD have generally run flawlessly, so I’ll cut them some slack for launching this in a year when supplies and inventory were whack.
@@TheRancor53 Xd's are definitely not flawless. The Springfield 1911's are ok but as a brand Springfield is over rated. They don't innovate anything and they definitely fail at a higher rate than most equally priced firearms. Most high volume shooters do not choose Springfield for good reasons.
@@lukedemello2077 High volume shooters and trainers I know do, popular choice for instructors (not my cup of tea) I’ve run my TRP 1911 through thousands of rounds & a Korean War vet at a local range still has the OG frame and slide from his 200,000 rd count Springfield M1911 (just keeps changing out internals and barrel). I’m not a Hellcat fan, but even the harshest critics of Springfield don’t seem to knock reliability on it either.
The US government Springfield guns have nothing to do with modern Springfield. Any bring back 1911's would make it on my bucket list. Springfield doesn't manufacture the Hellcat they just import them and jack up the prices. The original Xd guns were imported as Hs2000s and were value guns in the 225 dollar range ! Springfield slapped the XD moniker on it and doubled the price!

You make the best gun videos on UA-cam! I love the way you thoroughly cover the gun functionality. It’s almost like going to the gun store and handling it myself. You always cover the features I’m curious about and fill me in on details I didn’t know. Then you take it to the range to discuss accuracy, recoil, and muzzle flip. It’s very helpful to watch you shoot it. I watch your hand grip and muzzle flip. I like that you shoot weak hand as well so I can see how the gun responds. I also like to see your daughter shoot (I have one too) because I want to see how well a female can handle certain guns for size and power. I bet she is a good shot! Anyway, please keep making gun videos. You are GREAT at it!!

The original GP-35 DID have a round commander hammer. The tang hammer didn't come around until MUCH later, well after WWII and typically on the US import models. Most military and police contract models had the ring hammer.

One of the best guns I ever had was a custom Hi Power built by Jim Hoag. I gave it to my brother for a birthday present. Great carry gun and a very slim shape.
I had multiple failure to extracts in the first 150 rounds I put through the pistol. I sent it back to Springfield Armory, they sent it back a week later with a new extractor spring, extractor pin and they polished the chamber. In the next 200 rounds, I had one failure to extract. I haven’t shot it since then.
It is interesting how Springfield and Girsan both dropped a new version of a Hi-Power. I no sooner watched Honest Outlaw's review of the Girsan P-35 and your video for the SA-35 followed it.
I have a thing for SAO hammer fired pistols and well the Browning Hi-Power was always a fan favorite in my shooting family circle. If you think about it Browning made the very first 2011 pistol when he made the Hi-Power in 1935. Granted their are several differences between the 1911 and the HP-35 platform especially in the controls, but someone who is accustomed to a 1911 pistol back in the day when Browning first designed the HP-35 would find it to be relatively familiar in feel with a greater capacity and a lighter recoil impulse. Having grown up shooting both, I would say that a person could shoot them back to back and not have to worry about how to hold and point them as they really do aim almost identically. The only thing one would have to learn is the trigger because the HP-35 was not nearly as refined IMO. Glad to see that this model of firearm has not been completely abandoned. It is ironic how one man's designs are the most coveted and copied.
I carried a Browning High Power in the army. Loved it, just fit so well in the hand and so natural to point and shoot, this looks like a faithful reproduction.
I notice that one you can dry fire without a magazine in. The original would only fire with a mag in it, although if your finger was long enough you could put a finger up the magazine well and trip the catch and fire it, or trip the hammer sear directly.
I already have 2 High Powers but that Springfield really looks nice. Love the 1911 single actions.

Had a Canadian army version, it was green Parkerized, beautiful, sweet shooting, and one of my life's biggest regrets selling it.
I just bought one, haven't had a chance to shoot it, but Iove the overall quality and that it is made in the USA! I own a Browning HP that I bought in the early 90's. It's a beautiful gun, but I like the improvements on the new SA35. I am glad Springfield is continuing to produce this classic firearm.

If you want a 1950-60's vintage one, look for a Canadian Arsenals Longbranch Ont. model (pusser crowfoot stamping mark will be one clue) as the machining processes resulted in them, even with the mag lock-out, having an under 6lb. trigger pull and cleaner trigger break than others of the same genre.

the browning HP is accurate no question about it, I have one and its a collectors item on my part and envy of others since its not made in the US, was amazed by Springfield bringing it back to life and even better I heard, but in this era where the shooting sport has emerged, I feel it won't sell, coz there isn't a division that it would fit in, its not double action too, though its tempting to have one, id rather keep what's original than spend on a newer version or id rather spend on a different brand that I can use to compete and at the same time carry. So reviving a legend in a generation that isn't his anymore is the case of the Springfield sa35

I love, LOVE Hi powers. And, while I totally understand that a new launch can have some kinks, I've never understood why gun manufactureres don't immediately admit to the problem, announce that it's been fixed, and offer a free repair to anyone with an early pistol. I was looking forward to getting one of these as a backup to my T-Series Belgian Hi Power. Now I'll have to wait until I THINK the extraction problems are fixed....and the price of available guns gets back to the MSRP. Nice honest review!

I had decided not to buy any more guns, I'm 75 and have more than I need, then Springfield Armory comes out with this! I may have to make an exception, so far, I haven't been able to find one, I guess I'll have to be patient till the dealers get some in stock. 🙂
It’s not the hammer spur that bites it’s the part of the hammer just below the spur that pinches the skin that goes up to the edge of the beaver tail. I’ve had both types of hammers and both bite the same. I did modify a hammer below the spur to provide some slight clearance and that worked. I would bet that SA did the same. To compare the profile drop the hammer on both and see how much of the hammer below the spur is visible from the side and how much is hidden by the slide.

For those of us who appreciate the slim and other features of the HP, this is a high compliment. They have added improvements. I would like to see them offer two additional features in the spirit of modernization: add a lower rail and a optic sight platform to the slide. With the improved safety lever, I don't have a problem with single actions when you have a positive action safety. Thanks for the video.
Totally agree on the positive action safety. On adding rails, I think that if a nation’s military called for it in a production req, Springfield would happily add it (and may eventually anyway). They’re just a simple, beautiful pistol designed by a master and feel a lot better in the hand than the CZ, IMHO.

Springfield fixed everything that was wrong with the FA and the Girsan. It's a sweet, low-profile, reliable weapon. Well made and solid. I put a few hundred rounds through mine with zero malfunctions or jams. Pretty much a perfect pistol, and super reasonable for the price.
Loved the review and pointing out the early production shortcomings. I’m sure SA will get these ironed out.

I was shooting my Browning FN Hi-Power yesterday. It is always fun to shoot, and it is more accurate than I am. I do make sure to wear a glove on my right hand to avoid the hammer bite. The glossy blue on my FN is lovely. --Old Guy
Looks impressive. Happy Springfield is making them. However, those 3 different malfunctions in less than 1000 rounds give me pause. This is a time proven design, that really should be flawless at this point.
I own a large amount of 9 mm semi automatics. Beretta, Sig, S&W, Bersa, Taurus, and Kahr. Honestly none had feeding or extraction issues at all. My benchmark for total reliability is 2000 rounds through each, which all have achieved
I will wait a while before considering adding one of these to the stable.
I have a early 90s hungarian made hipower and I've never had a malfunction even through the 10 years I didn't clean it.

I have a HI Power that I purchased in the mid 70's and was manufactured in Belgium. It looks like Springfield Armory made some necessary improvements to this new offering. I had an annoying problem with my HP with feeding certain types of hollowpoints. It also wouldn't extract the last fired case. I had the barrel
throated and the feed ramp polished and the that took care of both problems. My HP will now feed and extract anything that I want to shoot through it. I also had an extended safety lever installed as well as a yellow plastic insert in the front sight.
I'm still yet to find any of these in stock anywhere, particularly anywhere close to MSRP.

I have to say at the start, my rock island tcm22 with the 9mm barrel shot a tad better, but only for the 1st 50 rounds.
Then my sa-35 performed flawlessly. At 25 yards, I was holding 1-3 inch groups. My ria was similar. Only my canik tp9sfx with red dot did a little better, but then it dies have the best trigger of the 3.
I carry a 35th Anniversary Edition everyday. I'm very interested in getting my hands on one of these Springfield as soon as they become more available.
I’ve heard from several reviewers/actual owners who put over 600-700 rounds through one of these are having extraction issues. Most people, I guess won’t put that many rounds through one of these, but that seems to be a very common issue. Also, there are some finish quality issues being reported as well. No way I’m pay hundreds over MSRP for something with issues like this. I will wait for the hype to fall off.

All the specific issues aside, I have to agree with those of you who have said you'll wait until all the issues have been worked out. I usually do that with any new firearm or vehicle etc... I'll let someone else discover if there are issues and what they are. Springfield will address them and then it will be a dependable pistol. As a southpaw, I'd like to see this offered with an ambi safety but that isn't a hard fix in the aftermarket. Garand Thumb in his review said that the grips aren't very comfortable after a couple of hundred rounds, but again, there is an easy aftermarket fix for that. In a year or 3 I think I'll pick one up. I've always wanted to own one. Beautiful weapon.

I love that during these crazy ammo shortage times, the Ammo makers are just so readily happy and quick to hand out cases and cases and cases of the stuff to these channels while we just would love to go shoot even just 50 rounds here and there but have a damn hard chance of even getting to do so. Kind of irksome.

The Black Friday before Covid hit…. A 1,000 round 9mm case at the farm and fleet stores up north was $140!!!!!
I was going to get another 1911, but don’t see .45 coming back in numbers. Then SA (damn you guys!) came out with this little beauty. I’ve stocked up on 9mm so it is nice to have a gun you can shoot. I’m probably going to pick one up. SA is making some great weapons and I already own several.
The safety, sights and trigger are nice upgrades to the original design. I have a FEG clone that I recently acquired and love that it fills the itch of hi power for me and mainly sticks to the original design but if you want an upgraded version this may be a good option. The original safety and trigger leave much to be desired but the trigger is much better since I got rid of the magazine disconnect safety. I'm not a fan of Springfield but i can see the appeal for those who may want one. I'm sure once they work out the kinks itll be a good shooter 👍
This is the first semiautomatic that I used in competition. It is one of the most comfortable pistols to fire save the hammer bite. I tap this with a scar on my right hand webbing. We always added extended ambi safeties, Millet sights, and Bar-Sto barrels. Ran great with all types of ammunition. They are accurate and all steel construction soaks up a bit of recoil. I regret selling them every time I see these new SA35s in videos.
I forgot that we had these pistols electrofilmed and I would run Pachmayr grips without the back strap panel.
I bought the Turkish model and really love it.

I have my Uncles, FN high power from 1943 with the German markings he took from a German Officer in Italy.
He served from Anzio thru the end of the war… with a purple heart.
I have shot it once, it will go to my son when i am gone.

I just went to a gun show the other day and only one dealer had one. He was also charging 1899 for it and wouldn’t let anyone hold it.

My father owned one in the early 70's and his friends would arm wrestle to be the first to shoot it on range trips.
You've said in many of your videos about how many 1911s and how much you like them. However which would you prefer, the HP or the 1911
Both are iconic pieces of history and are the grandfather and great grandfathers of all the guns we see today. John Browning really brought solid safe and reliable designs to the market. The man was a firearms genius!
Officers carried such a high reputation as did the British SAS in northen Ireland and andy McNabb told of a fellow operator had two people following him down a short cut so before the could grab him he rolled forward pulled the Browning high power then slotted both who on checking were terrorists carrying weapons . So reliable he trusted the weapon to work. This is in his second book about his life as child then his army life .
Nice gun. I would like to get one.
But as much as I like the HP, I like the CZ 75 SAO (Single Action Only) model.
It has all the custom features that a Novak Custom HP has.
The single action trigger is great. It already has a 'beaver tail' type tang/grip.
It has ambidextrous larger thumb Safeties and ambidextrous slide releases.
And it's easy to change the sights.
Unfortunately they are hard to find.
I bought a CZ85 (same as CZ75 with upgrades.
Then I got the parts from CZ Custom to make it SAO with the larger Safeties.
I will buy the new SA when the prices come down. And then upgrade it with Cylinder & Slide Parts.

The CZ 85 is a 75 with bilateral frame-mounted safeties and bilateral slide catch/release levers. Since CZ has discontinued the 85, the SAO, and stainless steel models, CZ should just make a stainless steel 85 or stainless steel SAO.
I remember reading (maybe G&A?) about Browning making a .40 s&w version of the HighPower. To do that, they didn't just change the barrel, spring, and mag; but actually brought Suaive (? spelling) back to redesign the entire pistol.
Duidonne Saive (1888-1970). Maybe it was a zombie version of him.

Yeah, the extractor issues kinda kill this gun for me. Would love one if SA will fix it in the future. also I don't like the inability of keeping a light on it. Sure it's probably mean't to just be a range gun I just strongly believe that all guns should be fighting guns.

Not all fighting guns “NEED” a light. One always needs a one hand held light at minimum. Is a gun mounted light nice, yea but is it necessary ? Absolutely not.

Buy a CZ. That would solve all your issues with the SA35

First thing to do with this firearm is to completely disassemble it , polish the slide rails , the feed ramp, the chamber . then diligently work the action while listening to relaxing music. Smooth those contact surfaces.. Now remove the extractor and polish the slot it rides in.. for some reason, the extractor has always been a thorn in the design of this sidearm.

Kudos to you for making sure Dieudonné Saive is not forgotten. He was responsible for the double row magazine and was also the designer of the FN FAL. I think he's bburied in the cemetery at Herstal in Belgium. My Browning Mk III is my bedroom gun. And I REALLY want an SA-35! Beautiful firearm. The Tisas is not nickel plated. It is stainless steel. To my knowledge, it is the only stainless Hi-Power that exists, at least as far as mass production. I wish that I had picked one up when they were available.
I just brought one of these home. Trigger pull measures well over 6 lbs. consistently. I am going to shoot it and see if it improves but then I will be sending it off for a customization which will bring it to a grail fun level. The gun looks great and I think a custom high power beats a custom 1911 hands down .
I find it odd that if it wasn't produced with, or in conjunction with Tisas that it uses the same design hammer, and more telling, the same slide cuts for sights. Why not use 1911 or better, Hi-Power slide cuts for sights? Just doesn't make sense.
Also, I find it interesting that anyone who is *sent* a SA-35 has one that has no issues...but those who have had to buy them (that is, the "little guys" who buy their won guns for review) have a host of issues ranging from parts issues to finish issues. That is, the people who bought the gun report problems/issues and those who were sent/given the gun by SA had nothing but praise. Seems like a disconnect.
I get that SA "stands behind" the gun, but it's an 85 year old design...there should be *NO* reason that they ship something that isn't 100%. Then again, I wouldn't shed a tear if SA simply disappeared.
Beyond that, a good review as always.
I like this channel, but when the manufacturer sends you guns to review, they never say the gun is junk, I would not buy this. If you did I bet you would not get anymore guns from them to review. So you kind of have to read between the lines.
@@stephenwhite3576 Pretty much. I just saw an ad for EAA's Girsan import MCP35...which oddly now has proper sized HP sight cuts, ambidextrous safety, 15 round mags, and all the other "enhancements" SA is crowing about...for a couple hundred $ less.

I dig it. I think there is a company called BH Solutions or something like that . They are taking this gun and already addressing any short comings and making it smoother and more reliable. I think for $650-700 it’s a good deal. There will be one under my Christmas tree this yr. Looking forward to it

Look up the history of John Browning and you will understand. There is a very good video about him on you tube.

Blooming nice. I carried a Hi-Power for several years and had to leave it behind. I've since owned and carried Glocks and Sigs, and I like them but I miss my Belgian pistol.
I’ll wait another year before I get one, but this looks like a real shooter.
I guess my Walther Q4 SF will have to surfice until then.
