- Very few pistols have a history like the Hi-power. This pistol has been used around the world and has been copied many different manufactures. However, the SA-35 might just be the best one to date.
I wanted on of these since I saw Axel Foley in Beverly Hills Cop.

Be aware these STILL have extractor issues (gun purchased 2024, 45xxx sn) I just sent mine back a month ago and got it back last night. Failures to extract and eiect. Unsure if it's fixed yet. Also, cylinder and slide IS STILL IN BUSINESS. I bought a spring and detent for the safety from them this past month.
Cylinder and Slide is still very much in business. As a matter of fact I spoke with Bill Loughbridge the other day when ordering some parts for a Browning of mine.
I had one for a while! LOVED IT!! I had no malfunctions. Ended up getting a 2011 instead so I could have a light and red dot.
I picked one of these up a little over a year ago. Big problems out of the box. Extractor issues, accuracy issues, bad trigger. I sent it back to Springfield and when I got it back it was with a letter saying nothing was wrong with it. I had to get my local gunsmith to sort it out. Now it shoots ok but not great. I have a Belgian Browning from the 70’s that runs circles around the Springfield. Maybe they’re better now but I kinda doubt it. I’ve never had much luck with Springfield and have avoided them for a long time until this gun came out.

I bought my SA35 in April of 2023. 20xxx serial # range. I've been very pleased with it so far. Several hundred rounds with no malfunctions. One odd thing though, the finish on the backstrap has started changing color. It's not rust, and not really sure if that is normal. It maybe from the salts and oils in my hand, not really sure.
I have one of the first 900 made of the Springfield High Power 35. I have not had a problem with it at over 1000 rounds. True, I maintenance it every 150 rounds or so. (Casual Day at the Range.). Grand Thumb was doing a torture test. Hats off to him. The Tolerances are very tight. It is not a "Military Tolerance". The higher the tolerance, the more likely to stoppage due to lack of cleaning and proper lube. (High Tolerance 1911 vs Military Grade 1911. I have them both. Same thing. I love my Springfield as much as the several Browning HP I own.
My first pistol I ever bought was an FEG Hungarian Hi-power. Paid $189. It still hangs in my safe and shoots lights out to this day. Been a hi-power fan boy since.
yesss im a huge fan of FEG. i used to have a double action clone of a high power from them. great gun. that and i still carry my pa 63 walther pp copy.
I remember when those could be had at pawn shops for that price.
As another viewer pointed out, cylinder-slide is still very much in business and currently making parts for the SA-35
No one is talking about the magazine disconnect on the SA-35. A huge improvement from the original HI-Power.
Did Springfield replace the Extractor Spring with the correct one ? It seems that after 7-800 rounds the spring was failing in most of the pistols.
So true! I am on my 2nd shipment return to SA due to extraction issues. This thing could never be my EDC due to its pathetic reliability. I had such high expectations of this clone. My 1972 BHP is reliable and it’s over 40years old! Alas what was done right with this clone? Guess I got a lemon 😢

Argentine-made Hi Powers were produced by Direccion General Fabrications Militaries (commonly called FM) at their arms factory, Fabrica Armas Portatiles Domingo F. Matheu in Rosario, under Belgian FN license from 1969-1989 with FN inspectors watching close by. These were produced for the Argentine military and national police with a heavy manganese phosphate finish as a clone of the MkII 1965 version of the HP. Unlike many foreign-made BHP's, these Argentine guns are not simple clones with questionable interchangeably, but true license built models, and are marked as such.
I got mine #305 the day they were released under retail and zero problems.
I do love the Hi Power my first one was a Canada MK 1 Inglis 9 MM i got in 1991 .My second one was a New Browning Hi Power MK 3 In 40 S&W i got 1993 it was the gun i carry hiking in Arizona and Texas and now Michigan and i still shoot and carry to day. .
I bought the EAA P35 match. Runs flawlessly with all ammunition. Very nice flat trigger. 300 bucks cheaper than the Springfield. Full beavertail. No magazine disconnect. Nice machining work. No regrets.
I went with the Girsan MCP 35. No regrets. Minus the disconnect safety, it’s a great gun. It’s my gun for shooting and collecting, but I’ll rely on my CZ75 for the apocalypse
Rob Garrett who was a cop in GA and a big time gun writer. Has this SA-35 custom done by the late great Karl Sokol from Chestnut Mountain Sports. Rob did the shootout with all three High Powers Cylinder & Slide, Ted Yost and Karl Sokol from Chestnut Mountain Sports. Karl was a master gunsmith sad he passed away of a brain aneurysm in his early 60's 2 years ago. Karl trained with his HP and did many makes and models but the HighPower was what he loved. .

When they first came out I was excited. I went and bought five magazines before I bought the gun. Then, you couldn’t find one and if you could find one they were going for double or more of MSRP. Finally got one a bout a year ago. It shoots well but the sharp edges are a problem. Extractor started failing at about 800 rounds. It’s been back to Springfield twice. They tightened up the safety for a more positive click, I had them put some night sights on it and they replaced the extractor. I put a set of VZ grips on it and it feels great in the hand. I like it but not fully satisfied with it. It’s a range toy, and like you, I don’t know if I want to spend the money to do what I would like to get done to it. For now, I’m keeping it in the collection along with my wish list of customizing it.
I love mine. I had to smooth the tops of the grips, they were a little sharp for me. It’s one of my favorite pistols.
Got one a couple of months ago. Already put about 1000 rds thru it. No problems. Two cons though. Should be shipped with three mags instead of one. Also needs a ambidextrous safety. I'm a south paw.

I like the guns that are produced with their name on it, especially the old 1911s, I own this gun, I bought it used, I like it, even with the extractor issues, I just don’t carry it. I often carry a pocket gun in 9mm or .357 magnum. If you want to buy them new, I don’t care, this is America, but I remember them trying to sell other manufacturers down the river, and then pretending they had no idea it was going on. People who actually shoot may not care, until they can’t buy guns no more, or ammo, then they’ll complain, “it don’t effect me I don’t care”, that’s their right. I’ll not buy new products from them, that’s just me.

I don’t know. Do they work out of the box now? I had a SN below 1000 when they first launched. Choked bad.
They generally seem to be good to go now-a-days.
I was one of the early purchasers, ( my SA-35 was the second one to come into our LGS with a s/n just under 4k, ) and after the first flawless 15 rounds fired, every mag had issues. So.. it made a trip back to SA.
After it came back, it was fine.. for a while. But after several hundred rounds fired, the extractor broke off. I had one from Cylinder & Slide that I'd ordered 'just in case'.
Now, once again, it's back in action, but I'm still a tad weary of its long-term reliability.
I don't really intend to carry this and I've yet to even try any JHP ammo in it, so I'll see how it does.

Me personally, I would Never Ever alter, modify and or amend the Geometry of a Browning HP (i.e. Made in Belgium). Excellent presentation and Thanks.

I have several FN/“Browning” versions i modded, shot and carried for years.
Inarguably a CLASSIC I think.
I've shot the Springfield Armory SA-35 and I own a Girsan MCP-35 Match. The Girsan gives it a pretty decent run for the money. To those saying everything from Turkey is crap, you are wrong. Turkish shotguns, yep, they are garbage. Turkish 1911's and the HP clone, pretty damn good for the money.
Sure, but there is literally no pride in ownership, nor should there be especially when you are supporting the caliphate at the expense of your own country. I mean just so you can get a gun for 30 pieces of silver less than an American gun?

If you have some, a lawsuit or fines are in order because SA say explicitly on their website that th SA 35 is made in USA. Got Any? So anyone that buys one is doing so without this deep secret knowledge that you possess, and if it is from Turkey they are not mindful of it. Which is certainly better than those who openly support the Turkish caliphate
@@rifleshooterchannel208 you don't have any evidence much less proof. Even if you suspect that the raw forgings are from Turks, and that it is machined and assembled and finished in the USA. That is still better than straight up Turk. Made in USA standards generally would not allow it to be called that, unless the rules have been relaxed.
@@sjhoff You don’t think it’s strange that the SA-35 and the Tisas Hi Power are the only two Hi Power variants that share the proprietary Tisas rear sight dovetail dimensions?
At this point it is quite a lot more going on with SA than simply getting “raw forgings.”
_Maybe_ with the frame because that’s the technical “firearm” and they do the bare minimum to it to make it “USA Made” but for all practical purposes it is a rebranded Tisas.
Springfield has a rich history of buying third world junkers and slapping the SA logo on them.
My SA-35 had extractor issues right out of the box. I put in an aftermarket extractor, and that helped some; but extractor operation remains unreliable. Had an original HP several years ago; but the trigger was terrible & so it was traded for an M1 Garand. No regrets.
Purchased in 2023 and over 1200 rounds with zero issues.
I bought a Brow inf High Power Mark III back in 1986. Great pistol, crappy trigger. Hated the thumb safety. Years later I took it to Terry Tussey Gunsmitbing for a trgger job and new sights. A few more years later i got it Cerakoted. Then FN annkuned ti wont make them anymore after 2018 so I retired the BHP.
In 2021 or so SA announced their clone. I asked every gunstore in the southern part of the state and no ine has it. Then a year later a local shop called to say they hace a coupld so come on in. I love the SA 35. Great thumb safety, a bit stuff on the trigger but i took it in to take the creep out. Sights are good. Magazines interchange if you have lits of old BHP mags. Most parts will interchange. Grips will. Sears and dafeties may need some stoning. But real good construction. It pulls night stand duty as well as carry duty.
I have a WW2 bring back. That I take to the range from time to time. My only question is. Did John Moses Browning like getting hammer bite?

Gotta thank garandthumb and chalino sanchez for introducing me to this pistol, took me a while to find a good one but i got my self a pretty clean mk2 hi power.
I had one. And heaps of others, incl HK P7 M13, USP, Glock etc. If I could have only one pistol!!!! 😄👍🇦🇺

JMB had little to no input into the development of the pistol. His two prototypes were both striker fired and were rejected by the French just as Saive's original version was.
As a Californian, I can only dream...

Hi-Powers are awesome. I have a 1945-46 Hi-Power in my collection. Complete set with original box after the Austrian Gendarmerie at that time.
Great review! I've always wanted a high power and just recently found out about the SA35. I definitely want one! I'm a fan of all the old, historic pistol designs so I would leave it as close to the original issued design as possible.
None of the clones are "close to the original issued design". They are clones of the last variant, the Mk III. The original issued design would have the internal extractor. Eventually that changed to the 'T' and 'C' series pistols. The Clone Wars decided not to copy those versions.
I've had one for awile really like the gun mine broke the extractor, replaced it with a after market. My only complaint is the thumb safety is mushy. I'll fix that.

I don't understand the current difficulty in acquiring an SA-35.
Lipsey's, RSR, etc, has had these in stock and in substantial quantities for quite some time.
Love mine, not a better all steel (no MIMS) 9 out there and yes I have a CZ too.

If Springfield makes a version with an extended beavertail, I'm in. Was handling one in a gun shop, racked the slide a few times, positive the pistol would draw blood on the range.
Can verify it does draw blood if you hold it like a Glock your first time out 😂😅

The backside corners of the beaver tail is the same issue I found on the Springfield 1911 Mil Spec, which forced me to upgrade to the Garrison. I’m hoping Springfield will release upgraded versions of the SA-35 with some sort of extended beaver tail. To be honest I’m surprised that Springfield hasn’t at least released a stainless model of the SA-35 like they tend to do for their 1911s, which by the way I don’t personally believe the Hi Power design is an upgrade over the 1911. If you love 9mm, I can see why they may see it as an upgrade but the 1911 just seems to feel better in the hand and the thumb safety on a 1911 is much easier for me to access and operate. I love the Hi Power designs. They always catch my eye and makes me want to own one but for some reason the Hi Power doesn’t like me. So I decided to stop cheating on my Springfield 1911 and stay committed to her 😏

I sent mine to Novak's...they sent it back to me with an apology. They said the dovetail was unable to be fitted with one of their sights and the trigger was so difficult to set to a smooth 3lbs they wouldn't mess with it.
It still has the factory sights and a 4lb trigger.

Before you spend money powder the trigger with a cheap tube of dry graphite powder. Available at any auto parts store.
The good news is that the SAS Tier One operators from four different NATO nations, the military of pretty much every Commonwealth NATO nations the Special Boat Service, Royal Marines, South Africans, Rhodesians, etc felt that the specified trigger pull of 5 - 8 lbs was just fine on a fighting pistol to be used in WWII, the Korean War, Malaysian insurgency, Vietnam, Gulf War, Afghanistan, Iraq, anti-terrorist work, etc.
A trigger pull, BTW, whose specifications pretty much match those for the issue M16/M4 rifles.
Does the SA 35 have no trigger reset? Is that a characteristic of Hi Powers?
My Girsan did the same thing, very hard to find the reset. Never had any issues with it at all as far as function or reliability, but the trigger reset was just odd...

no trigger job should cost $500,any gunsmith worth his salt won't charge that amount. I've worked on dozens of hi-power triggers they are not that complicated and a good trigger job shouldn't exceed $180.. anything over that is straight up ripping people off.
@@goodish3355500 included a single action trigger job plus changing the shoe to a flat face. Now I’m not saying you are wrong. But someone who has worked on dozens on bench in their garage. Or the guy who is a true firearms machinist and gunsmith, with a lead time and dozens of recommendations. It’s like the buy once cry once, theory.
@@rdrgear I worked in a gunsmith shop for over 8 years in a major city servicing 1911's .. The hi power is a much simpler design . I am a machinist who works in another field now making a much better living. Installing a flat face trigger isn't big deal. But what do i know? its your money if you want to waste it! go ahead and spend it however you want. Just look at Wilson Combat's price sheet for trigger jobs.. It ain't $500..
The Springfield had so many issues when they came out and the company is anti 2A rights. Ironic for a company that sells guns. I handled one of these that someone had on consignment and it was incredibly stiff and the trigger felt very gritty. The new FN “High Power” are pretty interesting too. They feel great in hand, but are interesting how they shoot. Maybe I just need more time on one. I refuse to pay near a grand for a totally molested Milsurp though. Right now the best bet is the Inglis produced ones brought in by SDS Imports as of 2024.

The statement at 5:23 pm on May 1 says, “Springfield Armory, like Rock River Arms, was not aware of the actions taken by our trade association, IFMA, until after the fact. We take this situation very seriously and are looking into how this very unfortunate lapse in communication occurred.”
A half hour later, on May 1, Springfield Armory made another statement. You can read that entirely on their website. It says that they no longer have confidence in the IFMA and that they have severed all ties with the IFMA effective immediately. basically, it says that Dennis Reese, CEO of Springfield Armory, was ill-informed of the ramifications of the bill and its effects on the Second Amendment. He says, “We at Springfield Armory are unequivocally 100 percent against this bill and will continue to work with the NRA and others to ensure that it is defeated.”
There's a lot of info out there, Springfield Armory has never been anti 2nd!🇺🇸

MSRP is $699. That’s what I paid Feb 2024.
The trigger was ever so slightly gritty when new. Slide was a little stiff. A little Lucas Gun Oil and a little exercising the slide and trigger and it was smooth as silk. Due to recently acquired auto-immune disease AND hip replacement surgery, I haven’t been to the range yet. Can’t wait to get on new meds and wean myself from a walker! Springfield definitely makes best Hi-Power clone. Closest to original with better sights, better safety, better feed ramp, 2 more rounds and no magazine disconnect. Closest to my friend’s WW2 era Inglis I often shoot.

We have light pollution laws where I live; and a light is a must have for me
I also see lack of high polish and Quality Bluing. Not sold on a lot of other so called armor's finish.

Word from SA employees is that SA is importing 80% receivers from Tisas and finishing them in the USA - cuz as we all know, 80% isn’t a “firearm”per current law, and can thus be imported and finished here, given a SN, and labeled as “Made in USA”. All the other parts have no importation requirements, and thus can come from anywhere - like Turkey. When did the Tisas BR9 Regent leave the US market - and when did the SA-35 appear? Odd how both Tisas and Girsan had BHP clones in the US market - and then one disappeared just before the SA-35 appeared. BTW, Beretta/Benelli/Franchi/Uberti have been using Turkish parts for decades - but they can label them “Made in Italy” because they exploit similar firearm related “loopholes” in the EU.
I have an SA-35 and it seems great thus far - I also have a Tisas BR9 Regent and it is also a keeper - as are my Girsans and Brownings. Time will tell on the durability of the Turkish guns, but IMO, SA should come clean about the origin of their BHP (and possibly their 1911s?).
I agree with your comment although we need evidence cuz I know my local gun store denied that claim when a few fudds came into the shop and held one.

@@thomasward00 well the Inglis brand namesake now owned SDS even though is advertised as an American company they still loosely say the guns are made in Turkey. But it seems that newer guns if not imported are contracted to be made in Turkey to the U.S. Market.

I like the idea of Hot Rodding your Hi-Power, take that $1000 add about 5-600 $ to it and by yourself an Original P-35 to go with your shooter. If it is a 1911 trigger you desire By a Colt Goldcup w/said $1000+! The HP was never about a good trigger,It was about feel in hand and it's hi-capacity.

I have the new version of the FN Hi-Power. It's a modern take on the Hi-Power, but it's a nice shooting firearm. Only negatives, price, and all blacked out sights. Like to see you do a comparison.
To each their own - that's freedom for you. But having carried and used a 69C High Power since the early 1970's, FN's current version makes about as much sense being marketed as a "High Power" as putting a basketball hoop on the pitcher's mound in a baseball park.

@@KeanonGilliamSlang369 I was referring to what FN is now marketing as a High Power, when it is far less a High Power than the current Turkish clones.
Most people don't have hammer bite, including the tens of thousands of troops that have trained and carried it with a ring hammer. The original ring hammer - which Val Browning specified be changed to a spur hammer to appeal to American/1911 owner beliefs of what a hammer should like like on a pistol when he began importing High Powers into the USA for sale.
Ok, first the guns frame and slide are forged I've heard in Turkey. The gun is refined and made in the US. The SA 35 has a great trigger out of the box. I bought mine months ago and I have had 0 malfunctions or issues. No slide bite, no extraction issues because that was on their first I believe 2000 gun run. It's since been fixed. Not a big S-armory guy but this is a great gun. I shot a perfect score when qualifying with it. Shoots not only ball but hollow points as well. So if you're thinking about getting one, yes they're hard to cone by but when you do and you want one get it 👍

Heck, I dealt mine away after 400 Rounds. Couldn’t get the damn thing to run anything at all reliably. Went immediately back to my 1911’s. 😢
Cripes I used to carry one these in 1980s Only time I used it anger the bloody mag fell out. That broke the tension and all of us are still here. Great pistol though

the springfield is much worse than the girsan. reason is because springfield uses soft steels and the extractors are weak.
The girsan is overall better but the irons tend to be off due to a poor barrel lockup with the slide. It can be fixed by swapping a different barrel into the slide.
I agree. I have a Girsan and I love it. Good accuracy and an excellent price.

CZ is basically a 2nd Gen Hi Power.
I bought one after Springfield fixed the extractor issues. Fantastic pistol. Zero malfunctions. Great accuracy. Only weak point I saw was finish on gun. I spent some $ on nice cerakot job and some Spring upgrades. IMO this is a better product than most Hi Powers out there.

Browning had very, very little to do with either the initial prototype or all the years of development that led to the final design that is the High Power... that's the real history of the High Power that some in America don't like.
BTW, the "GP" stands for "Grande Puissance", i.e. High Power. The final development version prior to the GP35 was the almost identical "Grande Rendement" with slightly less magazine capacity and a magazines that dropped free.
The reality is that Browning initially refused to have anything to do with the project, archived FN correspondence indicating he believed that high capacity magazines would make pistols that had them unreliable as opposed to single stack magazines like the 1911.
As a result FN had their in-house resident Belgian firearms genius Dieudonné Saive create the initial prototype and he was pretty much the sole inventor and designer in the years that followed that resulted in what we know as the High Power.
So John Browning had very, very little involvement in either the initial prototype or the long development of the pistol after his one time involvement was rejected by the French. Saive created the initial prototype by modifying FN's then current blowback Model 1903 and fitting the double stack magazine he invented to that prototype.
The French rejected that first prototype by Sauve, now saying the pistol could not be a blowback design. FN then approached Browning again with Sauve's prototype and new double stack magazine. Browning sent them back two new designs, both of which were striker fired and not hammer fired, with one still being a blowback design, the other being a rotating bolt locking breech design.
The French rejected Browning's two designs as they had Sauve's original design. Browning shrugged his shoulders, sold the two patents on his designs to Winchester (who never manufactured either pistol) and went back to working on his Superposed shotgun design until he died a year later. France lost interest shortly after rejecting both JMB's two designs and designed the pistol they were looking for in-house in France.
Sauve continued to work on the design for many more years and multiple further prototypes until the 1928(?) variant, the Grande Rendement, caught the attention of the Belgian military. Sauve made further changes to meet the specifications required for the Belgian contract, and the Browning Grande Puissance with a higher capacity magazine (High Power as we know it) was borne.
For those who have a hard time believing this, an online search will find you Browning's patents of the two pistols he designed for the French contract. Aside from the fact that you quickly see that neither has a hammer, when you look at the internals you will see a lot of differences in the mechanism that don't relate to the mechanism of the High Power.
BTW, those who like you claim that it's "a problem" you can't fire/drop the hammer on a High Power with the original magazine disconnect and no magazine... you don't actually know much about the pistol. There's at least two different ways to do that.
Garand Thumb states that after 800 rounds the gun becomes useless due to jamming.
I’ve got well over 1500 rounds through my SA and it still keeps on going. It’s probably the ammo or the operator that causes most of the issues.

@@duncanidaho2130think his unit fell sn# range that had extractor(?) problems that has been quietly addressed by SA. I think several online testers compared early production and later production examples and they’ve noticed the current extractor sits a bit different than earlier units.
Instead of working that one over find a vintage.

They are Fine Guns, But not Double action. First shot cocked and locked. But unlike the 1911 it doesn't have the grip safety. I always feel a bit uneassy carrying it cocked and locked. A buddy fooled with the sear to make it lighter, and it went of in the back of his pants. Today prefer the CZ75, about the same ergonomics, but double action

As far as double action, speaking only for me, I started out on revolvers, but if I wanted a double action trigger, I'd be looking at some other variant than CZ
@@AirborneMOC031 He, He, I'v taken a stone to a sear, to do wright a pro. honning the sear. My Original SW36 from the 1970's has the scariest let off(Never touched) But my M27 wasn't quite as crisp. Pro didn't get it, fell by itself. A bit of my own got it scarry let off, Do push the hammer once in a while, to see if it will, let go on its own

This guy that keeps posting they are gay must have had his package tampered with before. Probably often. CZ 75 BD is a much better combat pistol. Anyone who served in SADF or Rhodesian Light infantry or parachute brigade known that since it came out. I just liked the BD option.
Well, some guns I’m OK with a clone. When it comes to a browning or FN high power I really want the real thing. My thinking is I want the real thing because it is a old-school gun that’s capable of modern firearms are. With that being said, there’s so many better modern goods that you can have if you just going to buy a clone it’s like breasts with no nipples, pointless.
