  • MGK (Machine Gun Kelly) trashed Corey Taylor and Slipknot from the stage at Riotfest, then Corey Taylor responded with receipts about his verse on MGK's album "Tickets To My Downfall." Who was right, and what does it mean? And who won the beef?

    MGK talking about how lame it is for 50 year olds to be wearing masks on stage, while also being 31 years old trying to pretend like he’s in high school is the height of cringe. Not even a Slipknot fan, just think it’s less lame to wear masks than being middle aged writing songs about high school.

    Honestly that coordination between Corey and Travis indicated to me that Corey was being very polite and protecting his brand. • @austingil7
      @austingil7 2 роки тому +40

      Exactly! It might sound like a douche move from someone who doesn't know Corey, but when you get to a certain level of credibility you just have to gatekeep your own brand and say no a lot. It might piss some people off, but it is what it is. Successful people delegate and say no a lot.

      @@MGWPS462 If you don’t like their music or personalities, that’s fine. But it could have been interesting to see what Corey would have brought to an MGK song if he had fought for it a bit more. Obviously in the end, he didn’t think he was a good fit for the song, which I can respect. Sometimes those creative visions don’t align, and you’d rather not embark on trying to make them align. Sometimes it’s not worth the time. MGK had more to gain than Corey, IMO. It just didn’t make sense, and that’s where things should have ended.
      If you stop and empathize with him, you can see MGK obviously idolizes a guy like Corey with all the compliments he was giving, but he was probably really hurt when he found out Corey didn’t want to feature. I don’t think email and having Barker be the middle-man did justice for expressing Corey’s reasoning towards backing out. MGK is likely just taking things personally because he’s constantly on the receiving end of a lot of personal attacks. Some people are not going to like you-and you just have to learn not to take it personally; otherwise, you just build up this animosity and anger. People don’t have to like you, but that’s not inherently *your* problem, it’s *theirs*, and you can find constructive feedback out of that, and just be the best you can be.

      @@DylanChau I agree to a certain extent and also thank you for coming at me with an intelligent response. But I guess all I was saying is that MGK has a track record of pissing off the wrong people. Eminem and now Slipknot, and I'm sure that there are more that just haven't been made as public. I agree that MGK probably does idolize a guy like Corey, but what it sounds like to me is that MGK got upset that Corey didn't want to do the vocals on his album and MGK was sour about it and then just started whining about it on stage. All Corey did was show proof that he wasn't the liar in this particular situation.

    • @DylanChau
      @DylanChau 2 роки тому +3

      @@MGWPS462 Yep, Corey responded politely at least from what we know, and I think he did what he was supposed to. Obviously he gave a legitimate attempt and didn’t just throw shade at MGK-he had legitimate interest in working with him, so for MGK to behave the way he did was certainly not the mature thing. Corey has been through plenty of beef for many more years than MGK, so he’s thick skinned and has his own fair share “why did I say that” moments, so I think some of the wisdom comes with the experience, although he’s still no saint.
      Either way, MGK has some wisdom to gain, and hopefully he gets there. From a business perspective, he’s keeping himself in the game, so there’s that. Drama sells, and maybe he stirs things up on purpose sometimes, but I have a feeling his personality is just like that, too. He’s got something to say, he wants the clout and validation from those he idolizes, but I’m sure we all can relate to that in one way or another. So I can empathize, but disagree with his behavior.

    Corey has had these boomer moments for awhile now and I blame a lot of the media outlets for it. Every time he would get in an interview they would ask the dude his opinions on things and now it's just an automatic response from him. I also agree with your take on Travis probably not being super stoked on this, I'd imagine a good amount of collabs from the rock/metal work for MGK will be coming from industry respect for Travis and the reaction from MGK will rub a lot of those people the wrong way. Also, I think it's a different mindset between the two dudes. Corey (a lot of other metal artists included) busted ass in the metal/rock scene to get to where both of his bands are/were and got to this "legend" status from it all and seeing someone make the jump from one genre to the other while making fairly shallow music is frustrating for these guys. The number one thing I see in comment sections from the MGK stans is his commercial success being greater than that of Slipknot while ignoring that fact albums like Iowa have gone platinum in multiple countries dating back to when streaming platforms weren't even remotely close to being thought of. A lot of bad takes on both sides though, one just has the longer career to back up their thoughts and feelings in the genre I guess.

Now, knowing how much fans Slipknot have outside US( us being from outside as well), this might be a problem for Mgk. I think the best thing for him is to just apologize to Slipknot. I'm not saying Corey's right too, but you can't take on on someone you can't handle. He knows that very well with Em on hip hop. While Slipknot isn't that popular as Em, but in metal, they're one of the giants and if he wants some rock and metal audience, he needs to just apologize.

    You'd think he would sort of learned how a bad interaction with someone whos accepted in the scene as sort of a legend.
    MGK had that whole thing with Eminem, where they had that whole back and fourth with a few diss tracks, that I think fans determined that Eminem clearly won that beef with "Killshot". I think that whole thing is pretty much why people say MGK "failed at rap". MGK switched genres after taking what many in the rap community considered to be a huge L.

Have you ever looked into the reason they wear masks? It’s not a “gimmick” 🤦‍♀️ it’s because they didn’t want any one person to be treated like a god because of their appearance. When people say he "failed at rap" its more about his place in the rap world, and less about his commercial success. The type of people who bought his albums were rarely into rap. Almost nobody respected him in the rap world regardless of his album sales. He could keep selling millions of rap records a year for the next 20 years, and unless he comes up with something actually good, he'd still be mocked by the rap world. Switching genres was the right move for him, but its obvious his understanding and appreciation for every genre he touches is very surface level at best. Its actually pretty accurate to say he failed at rap because he failed to captivate most rap fans despite writing chart topping rap songs for around 10 years

    Full disclosure, I did like MGK's album. I wouldn't exactly call myself a fan just yet, though. The album didn't absolutely blow me away, so I'll need to see another solid album out of him before I take that step. He's being a massive idiot in the way he's shooting back at Corey, same way he was with Eminem. Fortunately for MGK, his new fanbase demographics don't overlap very much with Corey's, so he's relatively safe from being booed out of yet another genre.
