With cost of “black gold” at 15-23 dollars per barrel, the USSR economy collapsed, and the sovok itself collapsed, and the "golden" horde ("russia") budget can only be fulfilled only with oil price at $ 42.4 and higher
I've just come across your channel, and it is a shame I didn't find it earlier. You invite some of the most interesting speakers from the globe. Great conversation and very interesting to hear questions answered by one of the US' most influential foreign policy writers.

Putin changed the Russian Army into a Russian Legion with combat troops signing contracts much along the lines of the French Foreign Legion but much shorter terms. Legions are great for small actions, but invading a nation and occupying it requires an Army. A legion is not up to the task.
It is not a question of "how to deal" with Russia, but simply the question how we should listen and try to understand Russia. And then ofcourse; To take what they say seriously. Non in the West did, but Russia doesn't bluff. We got what we deserved, because of our ideologicaly possesed, totaly insane and even childish "leaders" in the West
These De Balie guys quoted somebody as say "Putin was a nasty person". Well you can also refer to Biden and his "crime family" in nasty dealings in Ukraine when he was VP. When a journal goes down this personality bashing route, the conversation loses all analytic value and you can expect to learn nothing objective from it.
@@EduardoGarcia-rs9ht there is no standard. There is no one size fits all. Some people in some countries do not understand western democracy and frankly if you give it to them they dont appreciate it. Specially in countries with older history and more complex cultural factors people tend to consider things that are incomprehnsive for a typical western mindset. Countries should be rulled based on systems that is most acc3ptable and integratrd in the culture of people. Yet americans think they have a right to invade countries to inject their superior system.a fantasy that makes few american very rich at the expense of the majority of american and ofcourse the invaded nation. America has a short colonial history and the modern american mindset is so simplistic and unsophisticated to comprehend the complexity of our world. So they like to stick to their fantasy. And in all its arrogance, that comes from its material advancment (mostly due to illegal wars and imperialism) typical american simply believe that they are having the best possible life on earth among nations and their abundant materialism means freedom, and they have a system that is far superior to any system . This belife is more widespread among american that actually never left america to experience living abroad. I met many wise american travelling around the world whose experience humbled them enough to admit that living in america is wild wild west compared to many other countries which you might consider under developed.
It’s the most powerful country in human history. Nothing near its size and scope is anywhere near as efficient as it is, and no state close to its efficiency is anywhere near its size. Large, diverse countries are more difficult to govern efficiently than small or homogenous countries. When we take this into account, it becomes clear that the US has outperformed every other state in human history.
Horrible conflict indeed. But how about the wars that the US started in Iraq, Libya? Carpet bombardments of Yugoslavia? 20 years of disastrous campaign in Afghanistan and even more disastrous pullout! But hey, that's different, right?!
Putin was in his strongest position pre-invasion when he had Ukraine surrounded. He could have believably threatened just about anything and NATO was in disarray.
Now that's t.v. worth watching. Only two suggestions: 1. Lose the "serious" reading from the unknown actress 2. Resurrect Patrice O'neil and include him on the panel. If resurrection is not an option Bill Burr is also a strong commentator.
Sorry Robert Kaplan, Putin say publically right in front of John Maccain as far back as 2008 (in Romania if I recalled) that Ukraine being in NATO was not acceptable to Russia. Putin had not evolved from that position.
Ukraine was neither in NATO nor scheduled to be incorporated. So try harder, the audience of this channel is too well informed to fall for your tiktok-level comment...

He is a real hypocrite, leaving out a lot of facts and twisting the truth. Putin was a very "nasty" person? How about Cheney, Albright, Hillary, Rumsfeld, Rice, Sleepy Joe, etc. etc. They expect Putin to be nice to them when they have shown how nasty and aggressive they have been and still are??? One of characteristic features of authoritarian leaderships is, it has a very large percentage of unpredictablity.

We also need to keep in mind that the speakers are not qualified in the field of geopolitics or international relations, they are just journalists.

It kind of is

Right, each case is different. This discussion concerns Russia and you are trying to change the topic

yes but humanitarian outcry pulled him into ukraine he doesn't have much control over his own destiny.

The interviewer can't make a full sentence without 36 umms, but more importantly he's extremely biased. A disappointment

Kaplan’s analysis isn’t rooted in reality. This is unconditional US worship and irrational Russia bashing which borders on the comical.
