  • In this video I am showing you how to replace the manual transmission front differential oil on a Subaru Impreza Generation 4 (2012, 2013, 2014, 2015). The procedure is mostly the same for many Subaru models.
Changing the transmission oil will help if you are experiencing difficulties shifting in cold weather ( especially by switching to synthetic oil). Note that the transmission and front differential share the same oil (that's why they use GL-5).
    You will need:
    -A Torx T70 bit
    -A New drain plug gasket from Subaru model 803926090 GSKT-26. 3X32. 3X1
-3 Liter GL-5 API 75W90 non limited slip Oil (I used synthetic)
NOTE: Gear oil with limited slip additive may decrease the efficiency of the transmission's synchronizes an make the gear shifting harder. I used Motul Gear 300 75W90.
    Thanks for watching!
For those who are wondering, that brown grease you can see everywhere is the anti rust treatment. Because Canada...
This video was filmed using a Xiaomi Yi camera.

I just purchased a used 2017 Impreza manual which is a totally different platform. It has 65000 miles on it and I don;t know if this was ever done, so I want to do it just in case. Is the procedure more or less the same as previous generation? Also, is the Motul Gear 300 75w90 the best option for this application and the rear differential? Thanks for the video!

Hi, I have an automatic 2013 Subaru Impreza Sport. Should I use the 75-90 LS gear oil for that or still steer clear of the LS?

Hi. What size it the gasket/washer please. Just bought a 2008 2l Impreza, looks very similar to this. The engine sump plug is seeping and also the front diff/ MT sump plug is seeping too. The garage I bought it from has just changed both fluids and may not have replaced the gaskets/washers. They are too far away to go back to to complain though, I will email them and have a moan. The engine sump plug is easy to replace but struggling to get the one for the front diff. It's M26 but how wide is the gasket/washer? Will it matter if I end up with one that's wider than the head? Cheers.

Does the procedure outlined in this video change both the MT and Front Diff fluid at the same time? Do the MT gear box and the front diff share the same fluid "pool"?

Where did you get that long funnel that holds a quart oil bottle? Thanks!

I want to jump into the screen to detail the crap out of that engine and the undercarriage it looks like an oil bomb exploded, there's oil in every single crease and it looks like someone tried to clean it with dust, it must be all caked up what a majestic Saturday I would have.

Not bad for a parkin lott mechanic such as myself somewhat.... but just a quick idea/tip .... before starting and procedure like this..#1 absoloutly first thing u do... spray a good coating of purple super concentrated degrease 50/50 mix with water over the entire engine and what u can reach underside also. Let soak for 10 min spray another coating and quickly/agressively rinse everything mechanical on vehicle. Brush scrub anything u can acess or is filthy..... makes everything 1000x nicer , easier, Shit this filthy contaminates everything u touch... debris falls inside sealed areas while lossening bolts ,, your hands are constanly filthy contaminating everything you touch.....

What is all the black slime all over the firewall and ABS in the engine compartment? Looks like a huge oil leak.

if you keep making videos, please cut out long not-important bits like cleaning the drain plug for 40 seconds and lowering the car.
