I enjoy his touching upon the duality (paradox as he calls it) of Chaplin's comedy and simultaneously thoughtful elements. He mentioned that it defined the world that Chaplin created, but I feel, at large, that it's the world we live in. Some say if the Buddha knew every atrocity and generous deed that had ever happened, he would either laugh or cry, but I think he would breathe. Breathe as Chaplin did, and simply speak to others about what he saw. Call me crazy.
the joke charlie chaplin does with the pitchfork- when he tries to go through a d inoor with it- i saw done exactly the same way last night in the tv show "Vikings"
Please post all the Videos! David Thorburn is interesting to watch, and knows his stuff. Personally I would like to donate because of this course, but if the course is incomplete, how do I know any of the other course are complete. As I appreciate that 8 videos on this subject can be found on youtube, its really quite frustration that the full program has not been uploaded. It demonstrates of the ethics of MIT, so sad.
... I like a lot the ending parts of Chaplin's films, a feeling of failure but just because of the injustice of that time. Things have not change today.
Why is there a gap between the chaplin part II and the french ones (15. and so fourth)? Is there a way to get the rest of the videos missing? Professor Thorburn is really great! Thanks!!
+José Soares Sorry for the late reply. The main reasons are because of IP restrictions. This course has a lot of material under copyright. The early works are easy to cover because they are now in the public domain. The later works are still under copyright. The ones we did do have been edited under Fair Use guidelines. There are still more being done this way and the course will be updated hopefully at some point. It's a slow a process. We're glad you enjoy the series!
