- If you're still on the fence about modding your 3DS hopefully this video can at least convince you a little bit to do so. Since Nintendo shutdown the eShop back in 2023, the 3DS and Wii U communites have grown so much stronger. And since Nintendo officially stopped all means of discussing these consoles in 2024, modding your 3DS and Wii U are the only ways to keep them alive!

As someone whos modded their 3DS, it's wayy to easy and definitley worth it. I can emulate multiple games, have custom themes, play homebrew custom games, mod games, have it rejoin unlocked, ONLINE STREETPASSING!! And, heck, if your into it, getting free games for EDUCATIONAL PURPOSES for SCHOOL.

just got my 128GB card (upgrading from 32) and it is SUCH a drastic change. you don’t realize the luxury of digital storage until you go from 3 gbs left to 90😭 spent all day customizing the screen and organizing it LOL

I homebrew my 3ds a few weeks ago and it was the best thing I’ve done with it I’m currently trying to get ds games on it through roms and twilight menu

I wanted to keep my childhood DSi in stock state, but then I remembered it was also a childhood dream to run homebrew on it. Now my DSi is modded and I love it. It wasn't even possible to mod it until like 5 to 6 years after the 3DS, but I use it just as much.

3DS (obviously, lol)
The 3ds _can_ run Playstation 1 and N64 games but they don't run as well as the games mentioned up above, not to mention only the New 3/2ds models can run them. In my personal experience, PS1 games run better than most N64 games on 3ds but it can still be spotty. The only N64 game I've found that works perfectly is Mario 64, although I haven't done much research myself to be honest.

the only thing that I kind of regret with modding my original 3DS is that I lost all my save data doing it and there doesn't seem to be a way to reverse it. Still worth it in the end because of the sheer amount of new games I've gotten to experience that I could not otherwise, but there have been times where I really wanted to go back to an old save but can't

Pirating is bad and there is a reason for it being illegal. Who would want to willingly take Nintendo games and play them without spending hundreds of dollars on their respective consoles? (wink wink)

you can also emulate Virtual boy games on your 3ds now ik the vb was a big flop and no one talks about it but the games nintendo made like all their stuff were still really good plus the issues that came with the vb does carry over as hard with the 3ds honestly i dont understand why nintendo didnt port them over to the 3ds the same way they did with the nes virtual console games the simplistic nintendo games in a 3d aspect looks wonderfull
postscript: also i really want to add if you love 3ds games for their 3d effect u NEED to get a vr headset pref a quest 2 or up because u can emulate 3ds games using citra vr and it looks amazing tho mario kart 7 allowed me to learn what motion sickness is lol

I’d love to but I don’t have a computer laptop or android phone so I can’t really get luma 3ds but hey if I ever get some sort of device that can use an sd card I’ll make sure to mod my 3ds, but for now it’ll just be a dream.

Not buying a switch and emulating it is also a good decision, when nintendo stops rushing devs, stops overpricing things, stops charging for inferior online (to nnid) and makes a ui thats actually pleasing to use, brings back and adds features, sure ill stop pirating them, just listen to the music the wii u and 3ds, the ui, the sounds, the feel, the effort, then the switch looks very pathetic, and lifeless, and greedy

One thing about the DSi - the DSi XL looks WAY WAY better for DS games. So you are COMPLETELY wrong about that. Go ahead and load up the same game side by side any you will see the 3DS blur... I do agree that modding the 3DS is great but honestly because I'm playing more DS games the DSi XL with it's two IPS screens is far better for me.

3:17 it is actually still illegal to download ROMS for games online, even if you own them.
They aren’t saying that though, they are saying to dump your own games, that’s not getting them online, if you dump the rom yourself from your own cartridge or disc and put it on an emulator it’s legal
Hshop would be illegal but the piracy laws aren’t enforced, the only thing that can happen is for Nintendo to forcefully take down servers, it’s hard to enforce piracy laws on people

it's illegal to distribute ROMS. At most it is in a legal grey area to download games you already own via this method. Ethically, these companies have proven they have the right to revoke your game license and can rip it out of your library so if buying is not owning then pirating is not stealing (this goes double for games you cannot "legally" purchase in a way that gives the actual publisher money ie the eshop shutting down so you're not causing them damages by downloading a game that you physically cannot give them money for)

I don't know where you live but I recently found a copy of Smash for 3DS for literally just 10 bucks. I think it was just the cartridge without the case but yeah.

Playing DS, GBA games on a DSI Xl is a much better experience than on a 3Ds because of the screen ratio and pixels. I feel the 3DS is only good for playing 3DS games only.
Hi! I'm new to the gaming and modding community so l apologize in advance for acting confused lol but I have a question. I recently got a new 3ds xl and I modded it on my own everything went well and I downloaded a NDS game (rom) to play. it plays really good, but I tried to save my progress in the game and the progress I saved isn't showing up..everytime I reopen the game after saving the progress, it prompts me to start a new game idk what to do someone please help!!

No I haven't modded in my life and it was easy to follow however if visual is easier I recommend below averages gamings vid for old AND new 3ds.. It worked for m 😊

Your SD card is most likely in read-only mode. Take it out and look for a little switch on the side of it.

There is massive downsides though
Certain features of the 3ds will break with time like activity log etc
The software you download from the H Shop will break and Mario maker just doesn’t work on any modded systems it seems
Makes your sd card super hot and will make it die prematurely
And much much more so just beware and whatever you do don’t do it to your child good system everyone regrets it
I've only ever had issues with generic SD cards. Brand name ones seem to work great
