  • In this video we will be installing a walk through door in a shipping container. I will be using a 6" zip disk on a 4 1/2" grinder. I will also be using a victor cutting torch with a scarfing tip. I will be welding with 1/8 8010 and 3/32 7018. I hope you enjoy the video and find it helpful. I’ve done 8 or 9 of these, most of them I also cutoff the swinging doors, framed it in and installed canister roll up doors like they use on storage buildings. I’ve always been a 7018 & 6010 guy, but I learned that on the side cutouts, a 6010 stitch weld is very prone to cracking! Most of these containers are built of “weathering” steels (Cor-Ten), and that might be the issue. Weathering steels are frequently used for bridge beams and things like railcars that are in crushed rock service. The stuff weathers to a uniform rusty appearance, then stops! Most of those bridge beams and railcars are never painted!

Hi guys - if you don't want to put a "man door" in a container - but it is too much trouble opening the container doors all the time - it does make it easier you simply remove one set of cam lock bars from each door - the ones closest to the hinges - they are bolt on so it is quick and easy!! Just saying.

    GREAT JOB!!
Now I am a Door Guy/Welder Fabricator. You actually did it the hard way. I cut mine out with a MILWAUKEE metal cutting saw. Awesome saw, would have taken 10 - 15 min, including a clean cut at the sill. Why use 1/2" flat stock? I cut the hole a 1/4" bigger then the throat of the frame. That way the frame seals against the container. Run some flat stock on the inside for bracing and done. I always install a latch guard for added safety.
The Hollow Metal Manufacturer here in Phoenix makes frames specifically for containers. I want to install one of those see how it turns out.
Contact me about the threshold. I have a HUGE tip for you.

If you’re in the market for a plasma cutter and don’t have an air compressor handy, HypoTherm makes a unit with a self contained air compressor and air dryer. I think it’s called a Power Max 30. That model may be a little light duty for you but the machine does have a built in air compressor.

Also, I found it easiest (and stronger, too) to make my man door with tubing 2x4 or 2x3 with a 3/4 jamb the full height of the wall. Didn't want to mess with the prefab frames.

Also when on construction jobs staking out where everything goes we get back to work at 12--and get about an hour of "quiet time" on the job while the work crews take lunch at 12. Just so I would not take the chance of warping the metal therefore causing the door not to shut right. Bends in it. But I just did not want to take a chance. I will try it out on my own container and see if it warps at all. I have heard of guys seam welding them. So I reckon it is possible.

As far as a plasmas go you got to have two things you got to have air and you got to have electricity the hypertherm xp45 takes a 50 amp breaker a 225 welding machine will not give you full power then you have to back the power down to 30 a bobcat 250 or a Ranger 250 both have a 50 amp breaker when I am drag cutting using a straight edge you need 100 percent of that 45 amps if you're cutting 1/16 or 1/8 in the 45 is perfect if you're cutting 3/8 not so much that's why I don't even bother to carry a plasma on the truck you have to have 15,000 watts to power a plasma that's going to be productive on a job site similar to the hypertherm 65 or you're looking at 20,000 Watts for the 85 hobbyist you're fine but if you're cutting 20 ft sections of 3/8 plate to be honest with you I'm going to use a Milwaukee circular saw yeah it's pricey the blades are pricey but you can cut 1000 foot or better on a blade then it's cheaper than a cutting torch to run a dual air may be good for a hobbyist but I haven't found them useful in production I carry an air compressor for a gouge I also have an old-school SAE 350 to power that gouge downside is you don't have 240 120 60 HZ anyway that's just my experience
