  • Nothin' from nothin' leaves nothin'
    You gotta have somethin'
If you wanna be with me
    Nothin' from nothin' leaves nothin'
    You gotta have somethin'
If you wanna be with me
I'm not tryin' to be your hero
'Cause that zero is too cold for me, Brrr
I'm not tryin' to be your highness
'Cause that minus is too low to see, yeah
    Nothin' from nothin' leaves nothin'
    And I'm not stuffin'
    Believe you me
Don't you remember I told ya
I'm a soldier in the war on poverty, yeah
    Yes, I am
    Nothin' from nothin' leaves nothin'
    You gotta have somethin'
If you wanna be with me
    Nothin' from nothin' leaves nothin'
    You gotta have somethin'

    You gotta have somethin'
If you wanna be with me
You gotta bring me somethin' girl
If you wanna be with me

This is not from 1974, this is him on Saturday Night Live in 1975 as the first music guest ever, this was the first song he did that night and boy did he tear it up.

Actually at first it wasn't called Saturday Night Live, the first season and a half it was called NBC's Saturday Night because Howard Cosell owned the rights to the name with his show he had at the time called Saturday Night Live with Howard Cosell that Bill Murray was a writer on believe it or not, then half way through the second season it went off the air and Lorne Michael got the rights to the name Saturday Night Live and hired Bill Murray.
George Carlin was the first host ever that night.
And man did Billy Preston knock it out of the park with his performance if Nothing From Nothing, I myself think this was the greatest performance ever by a musical guest on the show, he set a standard everyone else has been chasing after ever since.

The original title was "NBC's Saturday Night".
A, you can look it up.
B, I own the first 2 seasons and can assure you the first season and a half say NBC's Saturday Night on the title card and is introduced by Don Pardo as that.
      The very first show was hosted by George Carlin, musical guests were Janis Ian and Billy Preston with Preston performing first (this incomplete clip), also on the first episode is "a film by Albert Brooks", comedians Valri Bromfield and Andy Kaufman, the original "not for ready prime time players" cast of;
      Jane Curtin
      Garrett Morris
      Laraine Newman
      Gilda Radner
      Dan Aykroyd
      John Belushi
      Chevy Chase
      George Coe
      Michael O'Donoghue
The first cold opening is John Belushi and George Coe with Coe suffering a fake heart attack and Belushi in character as a foreigner trying to learn English from him, then imitating his heart attack at which point Chevy Chase walks onto the set dressed as a set hand with a headset on and looks at the camera and says "Live from New York it's Saturday Night!!!", at which point the title card comes up that says "NBC's Saturday Night" and Don Pardo for the first time ever introduces the show by saying "NBC's Saturday Night...starring George Carlin...with Janis Ian and Billy Preston...a film by Albert Brooks...Jim Henson's Muppets (which was the world's introduction to the Muppets and they were a regular part of the show for the first season, though not the Muppet characters from their own future show)...the not for ready prime time players (as per the former mentioned original cast listed on the screen but not said aloud by Pardo)...and comedians Valri Broomfield, Andy Kaufman...ladies and gentlemen, George Carlin!!!"
Those are the exact words by Pardo and is how the show was introduced for the first season and a half with the exception of different hosts and musical guests, once again the title card says NBC's Saturday Night and is introduced by Pardo as such.
This lasted till halfway through the 2nd season when the title card and Pardo's introduction was changed to "Saturday Night Live" at which point Bill Murray who was previously a writer on the show Howard Cosell's Saturday Night Live and was added as a cast member.
The intro to the first show I just gave is a verbatim word for word intro from my DVD of the first show, first season I just put in.
Also, from the book Live From New York and Billy Crystal himself, Crystal was an original cast member who walked off the set 15 minutes before the first show aired at the advice of his agent over an unresolved dispute with Lorne Micheal, he would later in the 80's rejoin the cast as a regular.

This is nice, but where's the full performance? In any case, you can see why the Beatles brought him in as a young man for keyboards during the "Let It Be" sessions when Paul wasn't playing the piano.

This wasn't in 1974, this is from the very first episode of Saturday Night Live in 1975 which actually at the time was called NBC's Saturday Night because Howard Cosell owned the rights to the name with his show he had at the time Saturday Night Live with Howard Cosell that Bill Murray was actually a writer on, then half way through the 2nd season Cosell's show went off the air and Lorne Micheal bought the rights to the name Saturday Night Live and hired Bill Murray.
This was the first song ever performed on the show and Preston absolutely knocked it out of the park, George Carlin was the first guest host ever on this night and Billy Crystal who was actually supposed to be an original cast member walked off the set 15 minutes before it aired because of a disagreement he had with Lorne Micheal, he would return in the 1980's as a cast member.

This mix is unbelievably bad, a shame because it was a great performance. Somebody in SNL's sound team probably got chewed out for that one, they brought a soul singer/keyboardist on and then mic'd his guitarist like he was Hendrix or something lol
