That's something I've noticed about pretty much every SNL sketch: the writing tends to be "okay" at best, but it's the quality of the performers that make sketches like these absolute classics.
According to David Spade, when they did this sketch during dress rehearsal, Chris Farley said all of Matt Foley's lines in a normal speaking voice. The yelling took both David and Christina Applegate by surprise during the live taping, hence them trying to hide their laughter.
I’m always convinced that if Phil had lived he would have ended up as Walter White in Breaking Bad. The guys was phenomenal. These were the best days of SNL.
I WAS JUST THINKING THIS but that he probably would have played hal in Malcolm in the middle. The role almost seems written for him. Him and Cranston have the same kinda demeanor, something about this scene made me realize it
@@Batchall_Accepted he would have been awesome as both. I would have loved to seen what he would have become post-SNL. He was a phenomenal actor and he was just starting to truly break into films when he died.
I was lucky enough to have seen this in person. I was 17, my dad got tickets from a girl he was with at the time. We were seated directly in front of this set when it aired, on the 2nd tier, 1st row. Happy I was able to see two of the greatest perform live. Midnight Oil wasn't bad either, they sounded good live.
The set up, the full on physical delivery, the inability of spade or Applegate to hold it together, the table, this may be the greatest sketch in SNL history
Aside from Chris Farley carrying this sketch on his wings to the stars...can we appreciate Phil Hartman's tonation perfectly picturing the awkward dad trying to fit in with the kids.
What do you mean "fit in with the kids"? That's absolutely, and clearly, not what is happening. Since you didn't watch the sketch, I'll spell it out for you. Phil's character is a parent of two teens and found marijuana in their room. Instead of yelling at the kids, he took a less aggressive approach. Instead of being an enemy of his kids, he wanted to work WITH them. So, he hired a motivational speaker. He's not "trying to fit in the the kids". All he is doing is trying to not alienate himself from them. You shouldn't just spew out any idea that comes into your head. You should think about your thought for a second, see if it makes sense, then fix the mistakes...and THEN still don't share your idea. Keep it to yourself. It would be best if you didn't spread your ideas and opinions to anyone, as to not influence them into the same way of thinking. Cease and desist. We don't want your kind rubbing off on our children ANYMORE! Cease and desist!
@@TheEpicProportion, he did indeed. The character of Matt Foley began at Second City in Chicago (with Chris Farley as Foley), and SNL used it a few years later. Oddly enough, Bob had left SNL before the sketch aired.

Although I never met him or have any relation. I genuinely miss him and wish he was here to continue spreading his positive energy and making us laugh. May he rest in peace.
This is one of the best skits in the history of the show. It is easy to miss that Farley isn't someone who is constantly looking at cue cards to get his lines. He does this seamlessly, which makes this work much better, and that is easy to overlook.
Great skit for sure and Farley was simply awesome and totally hilarious, but the best wild skits were still in the first few seasons w/ Belushi and Ackroyd and gilda Radner, Jane Curtin, Garrett Morriss
My older brother is actually gonna be performing this skit at second city in Chicago, it's the first time in 30/31 years that this sketch had been performed live
The energy of people like Chris Farley is what SNL has been missing for so long. How 10000% he gave to his skits and how much that helped elevate his own costars to be just as memorable. It's so irreplaceable, but something that each person willing to do it can make into their own thing.
Sadly coke and booze fueled. Making people laugh with his over the top energy was him coping with chronic loneliness. He surrounded himself with people like drug dealers and partied constantly to cover up a really sensitive and lonely person. Seeing him on late night shows he couldn't separate himself from the characters he played on SNL and it's almost sad to watch.
He was an amazing guy! He was loved by all his co-workers. They said he was just as funny off camera and really cared a lot about everyone. He would always be trying to make strangers laugh when they'd all hang out, which they did often
@@ACOGLMT556 Yes, that's true. I would have said "only his co-workers" if that's what I meant. Chris Farley was a great guy and went to church every Sunday! He knew Jesus is the most high and we was right. Maybe this is why he was so likeable, he understood unconditional love like Jesus taught us
I like how David Spade immediately goes to help Chris Farley up but stops himself. He really was a good friend who cared about the man, and it does me good to see that reaction from time to time.

The whole sketch is made better by the fact they probably rehearsed this scene several times and when they did it live on SNL they still couldn't keep it together! Watching them try so hard to laugh is almost better than the sketch itself.
The funniest part of this skit is watching David Spade and Christina Applegate trying not to lose it. She could at least use her hair for cover. Poor David had nowhere to hide 🤣🤣🤣
Applegate also tried to fight back and break Farley by throwing him some curveball. "I wanna live in a van down by the river" I don't think that was in the script.

That was very much on purpose. One of the SNL writing staff had mentioned to Chris that he was going to hurt his voice talking like that. Chris told him not to worry about it.
According to Christina Applegate, Chris Farley wasn't part of the rehearsals. Matt Foley was a new character he'd recently concocted, and Chris wanted to wait until showtime before unveiling him to blindside his scene partners. Christina & David Spade were basically rendered useless halfway through the skit because they started channeling their focus into not laughing, in order to avoid ruining the scene. It's why there's a couple of brief moments where it sorta begins to drag because Chris would say a line, expect to hear the responses the script stated, yet he didn't get them because Spade & Christina Applegate are about to lose it and collapse into laughter any second now. As a result, Chris was forced to improvise and he mostly began repeating himself in an effort to fill those gaps of silence. In other words, this is a busted skit. It doesn't follow what the script called for, but it has achieved SNL immortality ever since because Chris Farley strapped the entire cast on his back and dragged everyone over the finish line singlehandedly.
I don’t think that’s true from what I hear the character is named after a teammate he had on the rugby team at Marquette and he did this bit that was really popular when he performed at small clubs
Chris told the props dept to put in a breakable table and not tell the rest of the people in the skit. That is there actual reaction to thinking he just fell on a real table.
You can only see it's a stunt table when it collapsed, it's hard to see the difference with a regular table when it wasn't broken yet. Besides, if you see how the rest of the people in the skit are responding to Matt falling through the table, they look just as surprised as the audience. You are the only idiot here jemimallah.

@@Jon_from_LI They're actually supposed to read from the cue cards, it's just that not everybody is good at not making it obvious. What's on them can change at any point up to the last minute. The wildest thing about this is that the sketch as-written isn't even *that* funny (imo), it is entirely elevated by Farley's insane performance.

It's hilarious how the kids are just really trying to stifle their laughter but it's still showing. Chris Farley what a legend
According to David Spade, when they did this sketch during dress rehearsal, Chris Farley said all of Matt Foley's lines in a normal speaking voice. The yelling took both David and Christina Applegate by surprise during the live taping, hence them trying to hide their laughter.

Hartman was a genius... I love all of his Simpsons voices and characters
He was a consummate professional
ZachDanny23 kool lookin cat ! My cat looks the same✌😎🐈
* Much like Michael James Wixted on that horrible The Smith Family sitcom. OMG was that lad ever annoying. ♣
That skit was written by Louis CK, Bob Odenkirk and Conan O’Brien.

@@RawChristianSuperman Chris died december 1997. "late 90's".....
my dad used to show me and my sisters this sketch all the time when i was a kid. it's still as funny today as it was to 8 year old me who had to ask "dad, whats pot?"
One of the greatest SNL sketches of all time. Saw this when it first aired and couldn't breathe from laughing so hard.
Especially when he anialated that coffee table.😂😂😂
@@nyki7fykxtjxyi
Which, apparently, wasn't scripted. Total accident. But they added it to his character in future appearances.
Not being able to breathe while laughing is probably one of the best things I have ever felt. I've been through so much worse and losing breath from laughing is a good feeling!
Right up there with Bass-o-matic, Candygram Shark, Cheeseburger and a Pepsi, and Wookin Pa Nub. When SNL is funny, it defines the era.
Chris Farley isn’t dead. He just went back to his VAN DOWN BY THE RIVER!!!!
his soul tranfered recently 20 million unemployed people covid 19
@@gasdorficmuncher9943 oof
wait he's dead?
Yes
@@mynameberamen1779 Yeah, he passed away from an overdosing on a "speedball". He had a really bad drug and alcohol addiction. Its sad that most of the people who try to make us laugh are the ones who need the most help and to laugh themselves. John Belushi, Chris Farley, and Robin Williams, may they rest in peace.
This is one of those sketches where no matter what, you’re going to laugh like it’s the first time because Chris just nail is perfectly. Every delivery, the movements, the way he’s fixing his waistband? It’s just genius.
Pure comedy gold. And you notice the whole cast aren't reading cue cards like you see most of the latest skits on SNL nowadays. They did a little thing like REHEARSAL and became familiar with it.
That's what makes a good skit really special.
@@Jon_from_LI They're actually supposed to read from the cue cards, it's just that not everybody is good at not making it obvious. What's on them can change at any point up to the last minute. This is how John Mulaney, when he was a writer, famously kept getting Bill Hader to break when he played Stefan-he'd add new, outrageous things to them just before the segment that Hader had never seen before, and he found it impossible not to react to what Mulaney came up with haha.

Rehearsal only starts on Thursdays, so they only have a few days to learn the lines, and they can change at any point before the sketch, basically. They've said that they've even had times where up until Weekend Update started, they were changing things. So the cue cards are essential to the show. :)
There's a cool video on the channel about the cue cards, actually!

Literally didn't chuckle once. I genuinely don't understand the humor.
Exactly! I've watched this after really bad days( at work, etc) and it never fails to cheer me up. I'm very tempted to call this perfection and I'm unsure if people would disagree with that statement. lol
@@tj12711Regardless of whether you laughed, the whole notion is hilarious beginning with the "intervention" concept within an otherwise moral family as well as the stereotypical motivational speaker who has no real world job and repeats cliches. On top of that, Chris's whole character was unprecedented. Anyone in the comedy business knows this was unprecedented gold and will always be a standard.
Applegate using her bangs to hide that she’s breaking 😂😂
What makes this skit even better is that Spade and Applegate had no idea that Farley is going through the table. Their reaction is awesome.
The same with the "wrestling" part Spade had no idea he was going to pick him up. That's why the whole skit is so awesome because they had no idea what Farley was going to do.
Thats so hard to believe!! he recovers so well! (yeah cocaine I guess, no pain)
In a Chris Farley documentary they told that in the rehersals Chris played the role without the crazy mannerisms, that´s why they were cracking up. He took them with low guard, specially with the table breaking, wich they didn´t know.
Spade thought Chris had tripped!! Watch him start to jump up to help him....only to realize he had planned it. Chris had the prop's guys build the table very flimsy, so it would shatter when he "fell" on it.
I still LOVE how David & Christina were trying SO HARD not to laugh....and failed!!!
So many great reactions to when Chris falls. Christina Applegate's reaction is so genuine. Then at the 5:00 mark, in the lower right hand side, you can see David Spade looking off camera covering his face and laughing. Then at 5:05, you see Phil Hartman lean forward and look straight into the camera as if to say, "What the f***". lol Of course you can hear David Spade laughing when Chris picks him up. Great stuff.
I miss Phil Hartman, he was so funny. Such a tragic loss. RIP
I agree! Chris Farley too.
He never broke character -such a tremendous talent-RIP
Took The Simpsons with him, and a brilliant turn on 3rd Rock, OH YEAH! One of a kind talent.
@@NeverBeNormal Phil wasn't on 30 Rock. Are you thinking of NewsRadio?
@@LewistownTech 3rd Rock From The Sun. He was in a season finale and passed before they did the season premiere. His character was amazing. OH YEAH!
There will never be another Christopher Crosby Farley. RIP
i knew a guy in high school who looked like him
well, there was belushi before him so maybe
My favorite SNL sketch of all time. Farley was king
