When I first saw this years ago, I remember feeling the weight of responsibility that we all should have as adults towards kids- any kid you come in contact with. The various adults in the documentary- especially the teachers and administrators at the boys' school, were the most incredible adults. They were working in this small town, caring and knowing about the students' lives and encouraging them, pushing them. It all matters
UPDATE ON CODY & CHRIS. WHERE ARE THEY NOW????? I just talked briefly with Cody on social media. He was so kind to have responded to a fan. He's still living in Kentucky,on a second marriage it looks like, has kids now! He was very kind when we spoke,i'm so happy he's doing well!. Chris on the the other hand is said to have been working up in the coal mines,He's chosen to kinda seclude himself. Please do not try and find these boys/men to contact them. Back in the early 2000's when they agreed to do the show, they had no way of knowing that one day people might be able to look them up through social media and such. They prefer their privacy, but are grateful for the impact it had too many!
Thank you for the update! I still think about them 15 years later after it aired on PBS. I always think about the scene when they saw the ocean for the first time!
@Frank Dux I watched this and the follow up interview when it originally aired on PBS years ago. I think cause the film was premiering at a festival, they were invited to come and they were saying how it was the first time they've seen the ocean.
This is a great piece of work. Such a touching story over a period of years. I have become friends with Cody through social media over the last few years and he is a real srand up guy and a great father. I sure hope Chris is doing well also. This is a must watch!!
I've been binge watching older Frontline docs for the past couple of weekends and came upon this one. So captivating and insightful, especially as someone who grew up in similar circumstances in the northeast and was able to overcome certain obstacles to a degree. Perspectives from other parts of the country always fascinated me. I'm hoping they are doing well...I was especially pulling for Chris. He doesn't seem to have an online presence anywhere. I hope he's doing okay.
I'm glad they included that Brilliant mind sound bite, I thought a lot bout that line. Amazing Doc...........And When Chris finds his Dad's Body.......................It didn't knock me out when I first saw it so much compared how it had the effect that I couldn't stop thinking about it the next day, week, etc....................What a GIFT ...................Cheers

What an amazing documentary! I saw this back 2006 -
Why doesn't PBS make great, personal documentaries like this anymore?
Because they have been taken over by communists. Look at the left wing propagana they distribute in 2024

"That painful and exhilarating twilight between who you were and who you could become"
Chris was a sweetheart man- that's what made me so depressed watching this whole 6 hour thing... Cody was a cool kid too...
Would love to see some kind of a follow up. Some googling reveals that Cody more or less made it but theres absolutely nothing about Chris.
You can watch the whole film FREE on www.pbs.org/wgbh/frontline/film/countryboys/
Found this for sale on Ebay but at $50 for a 3 vhs tape set ,kinda pricey
Скорее "smalltown boys". Они же не фермеры.
I'm gonna go watch this on PBS.
But I gotta say that chris is looking like someone straight out of the Sopranos at 2:10
I saw this back in the day. What happened to them I wonder.
