Gruberova is of the greatest Bel Canto sopranos of all time! Just glorious!
Her singing here is nothing shot of miraculous, but I would be inclined to call her a true coloratura and not really a bel canto soprano. I think she is more at home as Zerbinetta or Queen of the night.

It´s so magic, she was a miracle in her prime. UA-cam is flooded with videos from 2015-17 by her fatuous fans who assure each other that she´s still singing like 25 years ago. They should hear this fabulous performance and than try to tell this bullshit again.
Balance - the orchestra is very helpful! But still, the aria is demanding. Beautiful.
She ends on E flat over high C (es' ' ' ) and that gives the feeling that this is a showpeace. That is OK with me, but sends me to remember the a' ' ' ' ' (yes, the highest a on a piano) which Dvorak demands of the soloist in the Violin Concerto, fun but, sorry, not nice music. Also it sends me back to Maria Callas in the swamp in Aida, pure music.
It is a tradition in this repertoire that you sing those high notes, if you have them. If you listen to Callas as Lucia, you will find that she also sings them.
